The Pixel 8 Pro is the smartest smartphone on the market but it will have some serious competition from the S24 Ultra when it launches in a few days. After 3 months, the Pixel 8 Pro has been the best Pixel phone experience I've had so far and it just keeps getting better, I just hope it can keep up with the competition in 2024!

I am on my 2nd Google Pixel, 6a ---> 8 Pro, and it is the best Android I have used since I switched from iOS in 2014. I have had a lot of terrible Android phones since 2014 from the likes of LG, Huawei, Honor and Oppo, but Pixel has been the most consistent of the lot. For the past 3 years, I have been thinking about switching back to iOS due to frustrations I have had with Android. One thing that I would love to see Google do in the future is to release a smaller Pixel Pro just like Apple does.

honestly having the pixel A line there is no excuse not to have a smaller pro model, just like what apple does. personally i had the 7 last year and I love the size of that phone but because I wanted all the pro features I had to get the pro this year
Honestly the 8 is just as powerful as the 8pro they both share the same chip there is no excuse to make it smaller pro model

      Question:
How do you think it compares to the Samsung S23+ or it's upcoming S24+ variant ?
      Note:
I ask because of its specific dimensions. It will fit the Razer JungleCat controller, if you use the Samsung Note 9 case. Might make a couple cuts to it for the buttons or camera.
      Rant:
I'm very hesitant with that Tensor G3 chipset. It doesn't have the custom drivers and iGPU from Adreno. And it's built on the much-inferior Samsung 4nm lithography. So I think high-end functions like Emulation are likely to suffer.
      More rant:
I have bad luck with their previous Google phones, some in hardware but mostly in software. As a software oriented device, Google shows a lot of incompetence. Not a fan of curved screens. And I'm definitely a fan of "more is more" for features like Headphone Jack, microSD, IrDa blaster, User Removable Battery, etc etc. If only I could get the Razer JungleCat to work with the Samsung xCover 6 Pro, but then I might complain about the Cameras, Display, and Chipset... but they're right there/so close.
      edit: spelling

On your gaming phone comment, totally agree withe everything you're saying, but also think it's worth considering that cloud tech Google is utilising for other things, until last year they were utilising similar tech for a cloud gaming option - stadia - which, although was controversial in the gaming industry, it was highly praised in the cloud communities, and aloud you to play top shelf games (i.e Destiny 2, Assassin's creed etc) from almost any mid tier smart device and up, and from any old potato pc that could manage stable internet.
Stadia was "killed by Google" but their data from its use likely isn't being put to waste. There's been no specific announcement, but I wouldn't be surprised if we saw technology similar to stadias integrated into the Pixel series in the future to allow for a smother, higher fidelity experience.
There are other companies still utilising the cloud specifically for gaming like Nvidia, Xbox, Playstation and Boosteroid, and I don't think it will be too many years until we see this more of a standard, if not as the main way to play, then assisting and doing most of the heavy lifting in the background in places where things like phones/consoles don't have the horsepower/in built technology

I agree with everything you've said, especially when it comes to paywalling certain features. I believe those features should come to the Pixel 8 & Pixel 7 & 7 Pro. We already pay close to or at $1,000 for these devices and it could be financially draining for some of us who want good phones but can't get certain features due to subscriptions or paywalling certain features.
I also heard that the S24 series will allow users to access certain A.I. features until 2025 where some will be paywalled or will require a subscription. I really don't like that, but before making a purchase, I need to see and watch reviews on the phones, particularly the A.I. features.

@@kristinabliss Lol! Because I was intrigued with the new phones and just wanted the best ones in terms of 1. cameras, 2. ecosystem/workflow, and 3. hand feel.
I still love the Pixel actually and it has WAY better cameras than any phone I've owned (currently and previously), but I went back and bought an iPhone 15 Pro Max because I bought a Macbook Air M2 15inch. The iPhone does have the best ecosystem/workflowability with other apple products, the earphones are superb, and the laptops are unmatched. I just wanted things to work, and to work efficiently, hence, the iPhone is the best. It also happens to have the best and most satisfying and elegant UI.
The ecosystem as follows (that I currently own) really works so amazingly well together: apple tv and homepods speakers, airbuds pro 2, iPhone, Macbook air and iPad Mini 6.

So, you go about your business without a phone case? I can't even imagine that in my life of caring for goats, playing with my puppy, hiking and driving a semi for income. Great analysis! I've had Samsung Galaxy phones over the past several years but Google is my main productivity suite, so I've had my eye on the Pixel. The past couple of iterations I've stuck with Samsung because the standard Galaxy has excellent storage and battery life without feeling like a brick. If the Pro isn't too heavy it may be worth leaving my Samsung behind, especially with the future paywall on AI options. I usually keep my phones about 3 years so I'd hate to get used to a feature only to have it taken away. Otherwise I may wait for the Pixel 8a- the specs on the 8 aren't that much better than my S21 to come out of pocket $800.

If you live in a dense populated area your Pixel 8 should work ok. If you are more of a rural area and/or travel a lot I would skip the pixels as they still have a weak/terrible modem. I purchased the Pixel 8. Sitting in the exact spot my S23 got 5G UC 4-5 bars, the pixel 8 the best it could do was LTE with 1-2 bars at best. The pixel went back to Google.

Going from the pixel 6 to the 8 pro. After a month of mostly WFH and it's screen is scratched to hell including the glass on the lenses. Yet no reviews mention this. My 6 after 2 years doesn't have scratches. My 2 after 5 years of use (between me and my husband) no scratches. What is going on? Also I was excited about all the talk of the amazing camera. I've been hugely disappointed to learn I can't share the footage with boost because the social media platforms don't support the file and it defaults to a 💩standard file that is flat and lifeless. Same with the hires photos.

pixel 8 pro is really good device but my experiecne was not good with 8 pro. I think its best for people leaving in cold climate regions. I stay in Australia (currently Summer over here) and 8 pro warms up as soon as i start using the device and i feel uncomfortable. just for whatsapp or youtube or even web surfing it tends to warmup and continues. I have a rog 5 SD888 processor device and that processor was called to be overheating but SD888 keeps the device in normal temperature when using day to day use apps. Only it warms when I play games. But tensor g3 as soon as device umlocked it starts warming up. I even had 2 replacements as that device might the reason, but eventually all 3 pixel 8 pro i got had the same thing. So, they are only suitable in regions where the temperature doesn't cross 30 degree C. But it is really a good phone with lots of smart stuff. Snapdragon processors are way much better in handling a device. I wish google should need to address their hardware improvement if they want to stand 1st in the mobile market. *Finally, I got 3 pixel 8 pro and returned them back and all of them having bumps or impressions of screws and battery on their display, exactly same places on all 3 around the Display*

I love my Pixel 7 and I have no doubt that the Pixel 8 pro is great. I still see a couple major areas Google Must work on to truly compete with Samsung & Apple from a daily driver standpoint. Google must improve the efficiency of the battery usage/drain. Motorola has phones lasting 2 days no problem, and yes even their 2023 flagship edge+ (and Thinkphone) has awesome battery life. Samsung finally achieved awesome battery life with their 2023 Galaxy models. Google has to be able to tweak the Pixels (& their tensor chips) to get better battery life and we all know that is not just putting a bigger battery in. There's no reason for a Pixel to drain so much overnight when not in use, or use so much More battery when not on wifi, when running on mobile data. That leads into another important issue Google must improve more - reception, better antenna & placement, modem, etc. and be able to compete with Samsung, Motorola and others that are beating Google on getting good reception in areas where the signal is not the best. I've switched my sim to/from my Samsung S21 ultra from my Pixel 7 and there is just no doubt that Samsung's 3 year old flagship is beating Google's last year flagship on cell phone reception. Many of us, probably most of us, do not live in a big city where the reception is 4 or 5 bars all the time. This is a big issue. If a smartphone can't do the most basic tasks well, it doesn't matter how many AI bells & whistles are on the phone. My elderly Mom's cheap 2021 Motorola g power gets better reception than my Pixel 7, that's not good. Just recently I realized how bad my Pixel 7's battery life is on only mobile data when my Mom (who has Alzheimer's dementia) broke her hip and I ended up staying with her at the hospital and Rehabilitation for 3 weeks without wifi. I was only getting a half days battery life on my Pixel 7 and was still getting a day and a half on my Moms Motorola. Google, this is not acceptable. Please address these issues more. I'm sure they have improved on the Pixel 8 series but I doubt that it has improved enough to compete with the competition. I'm still seeing complaints on Pixel 8 and 8 pro forums. I want the Pixel phones to be the Best android phones available for us average consumers, I love the Pixel phones! We need reviewers like you commenting on these issues, and the other issues you have brought up so that Google hears the feedback and improves the Pixels more. Google has to nail the basics first to be the best. Thanks for all you do Adam!

Also, the G3 is unimpressive. I can't see it being useful in 3 years time let alone 7, unless all computing is done in the cloud and very little on the phone.
Which is no good for the majority of the world who don't have an affordable data plan that's always on.
Plus Snapdragon CPU's also include audio features like aptX and others which enhance your Bluetooth experience if you use Qualcomm equipped headphones. G3 doesn't have that.

@@TechOdyssey Manufacturers will say that a.i. will be on device but I still would not trust what they say since the manufacturers are known for doing scummy things and they don't say anything unless they get caught doing something nefarious and with bugs with the software. There are software bugs and there is possibility of a.i. leaking information from any of the manufacturers to the cloud because the manufacturers will do it intentionally without saying anything in order to make a quick buck and it can be part of the terms and conditions. For instance, the consumers that paid for there digital movies don't have access because sony revoked access to the movies that the customers already paid for due to a licensing agreement with discovery. There is nothing from stopping any of the manufacturers doing sony is doing by making an agreement with discovery with the digital movies. The manufacturers will mention certain things about a.i. like the a.i. is on device and the government will say that a.i. will be regulated but that can be half truths and that might not be the whole story, but there is a possibility of them leaving out other important information that we don't know about that they are keeping to themselves. Like the manufacturers doing other things without mentioning it because they made an agreement with the greedy corporations. All the manufacturers will do whatever it takes to make a profit and there is a possibility of it going into the wrong hands due to some software bugs like google deleting stuff automatically from google drive customers and the customers have no way of retrieving the data that they already lost. It's why I don't trust using cloud storage and there are so many things that can go wrong with a.i. It's just never brought up because it will scare people about using and trusting a.i. There is already a.i. using artist music to try to make music and there is deep fake stuff on the internet. I like tech but stuff like software can be manipulated just like bluetooth headphones and earbuds. For example bluetooth headphones and earbuds can intentionally be bricked by manufacturers in order to sell a new pair of bluetooth headphones and earbuds. There are people on youtube that says that there battery life and noise canceling headphones have gotten worse from doing software updates for them. I have the sony wf-1000xm4 bluetooth earbuds and the battery drains faster and the charging case battery drains faster. I even went back to using my wired headphones full time since there is no software that can manipulate my wired headphone and make the experience worse with the reasons that I have already mentioned. It's better to be safe than sorry. Ever since my friend tmobile account got hacked that my friend told me, I became cynical about anything about what the manufacturers will say and do, that's an issue with tmobile but things like this could happen with a.i. since we already are giving up our information to google and all the corporations when we are connected to the internet. There was article that someone got stuck in there tesla and they could not open anything not even the doors and let's say hypothetical that they have a.i. built into the car and there is some kind of software bug happening with the software inside car and it has something to do with a.i. because the software was not tested properly and thoroughly. There are software issues on smartphones and things that rely solely on software. Software is not perfect since the possibility of software bugs like with the camera and the bug automatically sending data to the cloud or to someone else device when using nfc to exchange contact information like apples namedrop feature from air drop instead of being on the device with a.i. since it can happen since there was some kind of software issues with the new software updates.

      @@Super-c00n stock android experience
      Recorder transcriptions
      The camera is a beast
      Big display
Phone hasn't frozen once unlike other phones I've had in the past
I also like how I get access to premium editing tools in Google photos that I didn't have on my other phones that weren't Google phones
Getting software updates before every other phone
Overall it feels really premium, the whole thing
