    I started making beats with the MPC 2000, then to the 4000. Now I'm on the MPC X. Great machine (!), but I would never sell or give away my older hardware. The time and grind I put into those machines just made them sentimentally invaluable.

      I still have my original MPC2000, fully blown, that I bought back in 1997 with an S3000XL sampler. Still have it after all these years. I even bought a second one a few years ago. About to get the MPC-X soon to be up to date. I will hold on to both my MPC2000 for sentimental reasons also.

      @@georgegeez8708 the new series is amazing!. i have an mpc one. Even though its a hybrid it still functions the same but with sooo many more capabilities than the last series. having software integrated is a blessing which some older heads debate the sound quality but i think it still sounds amazing and infinitely more powerful. I think some heads just dont like change and cant handle that tech moves forward. theres an algorithm that makes the new machines mimic the old vibrant sound of strict akai hardware but honestly it isnt shit! maybe a slight difference but MPCX just like the others have the same software and imo make it tons of more fun. You know! its all about how you use it. If your a hiphop head maybe youll have reservations but someone like me that went from Jungle and underground hipop its an improvement catered to ones needs and its an improvement all around. Enjoy your journey brother!

      It's funny. Ten or 15 years ago, people says: the sound of the 2000XL is shit, cold... for a good sound, take the 60 or the 3000. Now, its the same song... nostalgia and Hype inside.
      Just make beats. And is much more easy on the new MPC Live

    bro.. i've been thinking A LOT about what the time between us "not making music" (slicing, setting up programs, waiting for a floppy to load) does for us when making music. That connection nails it too, putting in the work to really think about what you're doing so its not all a waste in the end. I'll get halfway through chopping something on the 4k and realize it ain't going to work then stop dead in my tracks. But the Live ii makes me blast past that point and allows me to get all the way to making a whack track 😂

    Sound is king, it trumps everything. The old AKAI professional motto was “it’s not the toys, it’s the noise(sound).” But of course that motto changed after Nurmark bought them out.

  • @djspair

    In the year 2000, my first big studio investment was the 2000XL. I bought it brand new from AMS and paid around $1500. It literally came with one floppy disk of drum sounds. I upgraded the memory,$100, bought the 8 out expansion,$200.and purchased an external Zip drive for $150. Overall investment was almost 2k! I recently purchased the One for $699. By far it is one of the best pieces of AKAI hardware I've ever used, especially with the new firmware update! The 2000XL is a great machine, it' s just very bare bones when it comes to instruments and sounds. One thing for sure, the pads on the XL are much better than the ONE!

New equipment and software is made with so much convenience in mind that it's easy to bang out something real fast without sitting with it as much as you should. I miss my MPC 2000xl. On the choke groups or mute groups I used to Daisy chain the mutes in series. SO pad one gets stopped by pad 2, pad 2 by pad three and so one that got around the issues of one mute group.

    • @malobeats
      @malobeats  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey brother, I’m so glad you brought this up and mentioned this technique. I am definitely going to try it out next time I’m on my XL. Thank you so much

  • @bikesandbeats4693
    @bikesandbeats4693 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    The workaround for choking extra pads on the XL is to assign a sample to an unused pad, turn the volume of that pad to 0, set that pad to choke the extra pads you wanna choke, then set your original pad to play that unused pad simultaneously. So your original pad will choke two pads when pressed and will also trigger the second pad which will choke an additional two pads simultaneously. This was how I got around the limitation.

    I have used the 2000xl since 2015 and enjoy the worklow of having to actually build a beat (layering other effects to create effects) which gives the beat something special that current technology cannot replicate. New MPCs are dope and definitely have their place, but nothing beats manually chopping and layering via an MPC with no effects or quick chops and slices. I think what I like most about older MPCs, is that you have to take some time with your work. You have to do all this work, and I hear a lot of people saying that "you need a fast workflow"; okay - for some people - but I think taking time thinking, editing, creating leaves you a much more interesting result. You train your patience kinda:) hehe ..
    I also dig the fact that you have limitations. You need to come up with clever solutions and tricks if you really want to work around stuff ; which is nice , it lets the brain gets creative for doing simpler tasks - you accomplish something and do it yourself..
    I love my 2KXL. I really need to get it fixed as the shift button is almost 100% broken; and what is a 2kxl without a shift button..

      Hey brother, man I’m so glad you mentioned this and the funny thing is that on the newer MPC‘s I find myself trashing more beats than usual since I’m able to make them so fast and once I feel I do not like it I just delete it versus all my older MPC‘s I’ll make sure I work for it since I’ve already invested so much time. I’m glad to know I wasn’t the only one with the same feeling. I don’t use my XL as much anymore but I’ve promised myself not to ever sell it since it does hold a very high value for me personally

    So when the mpc one first came out I Pre ordered it and I also got a sp404. I got the sp first and the one kept on getting pushed back to the point that I canceled it. So I was learning the sp I have my technics 1200s hooked up I’ve been had lots of vinyls and I learned a lot. I’ve been working on Logic Pro for 15 years plus and it wasn’t challenging at all and when your chopping samples on logic it becomes like a tic tac toe there’s nothing hard about it. I joined the akai group on FB and once I saw the problems ppl was having with they’re mpc one I was like thaaaank god I ain’t buy that shit. Ppl upgrading the software to then having crazy glitches it was wild. So I said ok my pockets at that time could only afford a 2500 or a 2000xl. I found a 2000xl with the 8 out puts for crazy cheap. And I must say the combo of having a sp404 and a XL is beyond crazy. Sound wise the 404 beats the XL hands down but the work flow is amazing. I’ve done beats and turned the shit off and started from scratch because I wasn’t satisfied we have to stop living in a word where you want to cook a beat in 4min and say it’s fire. Sampling is truly a art and we should all take it serious. The founding fathers took it serious so should we

    Although I definitly can understand that whole thought process on workflow on a legacy machine vs a one I can't understand - nothing personal - how people nowadays say that a 2000xl has character and colors sound when 20 years ago I heard everybody complaining about how neutral it sounded vs. older samplers. Not gonna say a 2000xl doesnt color sound or anything, but its weird to me. Coming from a 2500 I must say that I prefer the One's sampling engine soundwise. My 2500 always sounded bland (always resampled my s950 into it for that reason), while the One does seem to capture the dynamics of vinyl very well.
    Anyway, dope video again! Keep it up.

    I think the MPC one and the newer mpcs in general give you more tools to finish your songs. On my mpc2000xl, I make a "beat", but its really just a 4-8 bar loop and then I play around with track mutes etc but that's about it.

I don't have the experience to make any sort of judgement, either way; however, their seems to be valid points on both sides. I wanted to include a link from another TH-cam content creator named Sight. He actually did a video, where he changed the bit depth and sample rate in order to emulate the sounds of older MPC's. I am not speaking about merely changing the "vintage mode to MPC 60, SP1200, etc." He's actually matching the bit depth and sample rate to match those older machines specifications. I thought your subscribers might appreciate this perspective. Either way, I APPRECIATE all of your hard work in creating this content. You are a blessing, hermano. Cuidate mucho!

      That's a crazy question. I myself have artifact drum machines. My cousin had an XL and an 8800. I'm looking into this mystical vibe about the 2000. Y? Because it made sampling what is. A vibrant rich sound that makes you wanna slap your girl.

    Sample into the 2000 then resample into the mpc one. If you want that sound.

    The 2000 and XL always sounded bland compared to the 60 or 3000. I always felt like I had to compress the hell out of my drums. I remember the XL used to get clowned by OG MPC heads, since it wasn't designed by Roger Linn. I bought it when it first dropped and felt ripped off at first, cuz I chose it over an SP1200 (back when they were under 2k). Maybe I'm just older than everyone on the comments, so I don't have the same nostalgia for that machine compared to the other MPC's.

    i like a full upgraded MPC 1000 more. there's no reason for me to buy a 2000XL again and a MPC One is a no go anyway. the One is more software based. for my taste to overloaded with features, almost like a DAW in itself.
