ive had my classic for probably 4 or 5 months now. as someone who makes ambient music, drum and bass, house, sampled hiphop and more, the classic is pretty great. 32 MIDI tracks for sequencing hardware, easy track mutes. i have everything run into my classic, records, my other samplers, drum machines, and synths, it's a very utilitarian and useful piece of equipment
Thanks for the vid on the 2KXL Marow. I use it solely as the centerpiece for my desk as a midi controller controlling other hardware samplers like the SP-404MK2, MS-1, and vsts. I may resample into it from time to time but, to me the power is in using it to sequence gear, vsts, and the MPC software.
There is only one feature of the xl I would like to have on my classic 2000: Adjusting the sample start and endpoint with shift & Fader. Other than that I'm pretty happy with the 2000. I use an external MO Drive with 230MB disks. The 2000 can format this disks with up to 20 partitions. So I use partitions as folders 😎
I love the 2kxl. I love it's sound, I love the workflow, I use the MIDI to control two synths and it does everything that I want it to do. I actually wanted to get a 2k originally but my friend, RIP, had a 2kxl and he told me that the upgrade was worth it so I swapped a S2k sampler for the MPC2kxl. Never regretted it and love the 2kxl.
From my prior experience, the 2000 seems to have a cleaner sound engine when it comes to sampling from CDs in particular. 2000xl sounds slightly lower in the high end. Cant tell from low end but I definitely hear the difference playing older beats made on the 2K vs 2kxl. Both are fantastic machines but I use the XL now with that tilting screen. Great comparison.
Dope vid Marlow. i just got me a mpc 2000 recently. I got to do a little work to it but totally excited to own a classic. I've owned the 4000&1000 ,sp1200.
@@mpchead of course! And both? I know that can be a ton of work but I throughly enjoy how you talked about the machines in this one, and I love how you make beats!
To me the 2KXL doesn't really have a particular sound, I use mine in a very different way than yours. They're really simple machines, they forces you to go straight to the point and I love that ! Cheers' Marlow !
i've used both a ton. i think the 2k wins handily over the xl. Here's why. 1) the jog wheel. The jog wheel on the 2k is million times better. you can move so fast with it. 2) 2k has faster workflow. when you're moving back real quick between say trim and program, you need to go fast. the xl has extra button pushes. 3) finding loop bpms in trim. this is so much faster in the 2k. I want to know exactly how many bpms my loop is quick. there's a couple extra button pushes in the xl. 4) xl is laggy. when you push play, it hangs for a split second. so basically if I have some music going in another box/tape/phono, i can never match it up. just makes me feel like the electronics are slow. it just feels slower over all. the 2k feels more solid. more metallic or something 5) this one is hard to articulate. but where the 2k feels open, the xl has more features BUT they really want you to use them. where the 2k makes you figure out a work around for what you want to do because its so limited, the xl feel like the training wheels are on. yeah, the track muting on the xl is dope. but thats really not all that crucial. im using an xl now, and every time I use it I miss the 2k classic. the only reason I don't use the classic is because all the original screens get those lines, mine had so many lines you can't even see anything, and the aftermarket screen although it works if you go to fast with the jog wheel and flying through modes the shit freezes up. do they sound different? Not really. about the same. I feel like the xl is a little duller/muter but that's probably just psychoacoustics.
Major differences to me were xl sounded cleaner than the flat 2k, tilt screen, track mute, and the biggest most important difference is the file management. The xl is so much nicer for storage and access. The xl can be upgraded easily with an SD card which is so much better than floppies. Floppies are awful. Parts are easier to find for the xl too. Of course you might as well get a Live than either of those. An xl or 2k is pretty much the same price as a Live and it is light years better than and previous mpcs. My opinion of course. Nice video Marlow.
Agreed on getting a modern MPC over the old ones. Only thing I would change is I'd say you can rock with a MPC One even better. The MPC One has more shortcut keys and it's easy to get down on. I pair mine with a Tascam Model 12 and it's a lot of fun to make music on....plus the MPC One is pretty low price for what you're getting in return.
I always liked the way to chop on the 2k the most. even tho on the xl it‘s easier, but the 2k gave me that feeling that I really listen to every single part of sample. on the xl it‘s so fast to chop, that you might miss something out…
No difference in sound like people say xl just have more options. I need timestretch shift + slider for samples tilted screen no boot disc and wav files thats why i love my 2000xl. Color scheme is betrer on 2000 imo
I've had 2 instances of 'wrong file format' on my 2kxl w/ the SD Card reader. It didn't result in the entire disk needing to be wiped (along w/ everything on it), but deleting the folder w/ the bad files straightened it out. Lost about 10-20 beats but have them recorded so they live on in this format now.
So i had an xl and it died on me a few years ago and i just replaced it yesterday with an og 2000 I was initially concerned about going from an xl to an og but now im excited.
I just save the OS and setup template to the scsi2sd drive. Also see a lot of people saying they have to use floppies on the 2000 classic. The 2k is a bit like the Roland s760 I have. If you sace a sample called kick 1 for example, the next project you start, if you name the kick the same it will say to overwrite when saving. So I just put a number for the project at the start of each sample. 1kick1, 1snare1 etc and for a new project 2kick1, 2snare1 etc and so on. Just name the sample quickly with the pads after sampling in. No need for floppies.
Here’s the major difference between the two machines, and it’s huge: say you make a drum kit and save it- later on you make some chops and think, “I’ll load in that drum kit and play it along with these chops”. On the XL you can do it, on the Classic you can’t. Similarly, there’s no point in making a multisample instrument like a bass on the Classic and thinking you can load it up to play along with other kits or multisampled instruments. You can do that on the XL, not the Classic. You touched on this when you said the Classic can only have one active program and the XL can have four, but the consequences of that make these machines very very different in their capabilities, as illustrated in my examples.
I just got the 4000, 1000, and the s3000xl (the cd version).... The MPC X spoiled me although I been making beats since 1994 with the Korg X3 and the ASR 10 .. fast forward to 2024 and I will still say vintage is the difference between fast food and a home cooked meal made with love.. 🤔🎹🎹
Yo @Marlow Digs thanks for doing this video. I’ve been rocking with the 2000XL since the beginning of the year, shout out to STLNDRMS. With that said what SD card reader are you using? Anyways, thank you for the video. Blessings.
Yeah. It's something you don't miss if you never had it. If your a new Beat maker Producer you want the newer MPCs. But if you can add one of these to the arsenal afterwards that would be great.
2000xl is better because of the organization factor!! Plus I still my zip100 attached to mine and still works. The 2000xl was a great upgrade to the 2000!!!
Cool man 💣👌 I own both and love them. The XL has a good sound but the 2000 classic pumps and pushes like a bull. The XL has the better file system, you can create folders, easily upgrade to CF, SD card reader, as well as some useful features. I find the workflow quicker and easier on the classic, especially when I chop manually. But that's just my opinion. Peace Yoar
@@vubeatz the cables are also reversed on both machines so they don't fit on the other machine. The screen burn is fixable but it is a pita. Otherwise there are screen replacements available. I only have one left for the 2K classic for now.

you should do a video comparison on 16 levels with tuning. a friend has the classic and i have the XL. the Xl time stretches the sound with each pad. on the classic it doesnt time stretching so some pads play faster then others. when doing bass it can be a hassle

Lmao. The tilt screen. The hero worship on these machines is out of control. Find one, learn it, and in turn, learn how YOU make music. Emulating all these other people’s style will only result in stagnation.
The power of these machines is the sequencing, not the processing, not the efx. The easiest way to get the sounds you WANT in the sequence is to sample IN to the machine with the sound processed. It’s not “hard to figure out”. Only in the last 5-10 years have I heard/seen people complain about what it can’t do. But I guess there are people complaining that their hammer doesn’t drive screws too.
the difference in sound with these two machines is when you sample records at 45 + however high your tuner goes on your turntable and pitch it back down. the classic holds on to the low end a lot better than the xl in my opinion
