Feels weird to look up reviews of this monitor and come across my comment, haha! I now have two of these monitors. One black like yours and one with white bezels. The white one has 1-2 dead pixels at the top left but you really don't notice it when gaming. You state yours is perfect in terms of backlight bleed. Mine has a bit in the lower right corner but nothing major.
I have a lot of Eizo monitors. Some CRTs and some LCDs. The LCDs tend to gather a lot of dust between the panels inside which is a royal PITA! I would suggest to cover it up when not using it and take great care when transporting it (clean it before storing it for transport and use dust free materials to package it up).
    Lovely presentation, subbed!

Whoa didn't think I'd see a comment from the one who I read the monitor comment from! I was really digging to see what I could learn about this monitor, especially in regards to input lag. Your comment about not feeling it in fighting games basically put me at ease. 👍
I'm really satisfied with this monitor. Been using it to revisit older games and I really have no complaints other than the price. That's a bummer with the 1-2 dead pixels though, I guess even EIZO isn't safe. :\
I didn't know EIZO had CRTs but I'm sure they don't make them anymore. I'll definitely keep in mind about the panel dust and transporting, as I may be moving sometime late in the year. I've been babying this thing as much as I could. I really hope EIZO continues making 4:3's in the future, or heck any other company, I still think there can be a use for these.
Thanks for the encouragement and support Pad, was surprised to see a notification for this. 👍

@@VoidbrandGallery Appreciate the kind words, you put a smile on my face when I saw my comment!😄 Yeah, the EIZO CRTs were proper beasts. Even bigger and chunkier compared to other CRTs but they were really well made. Unfortunately EIZO is probably the only company making 21 inch 4:3 LCDs. They also make another monitor which is a perfect square but it's extremely hard to get, the FlexScan EV2730Q. I will try and get one if I find it for a good price.
Apart from the price and the fact the EIZO S2133 doesn't support 50HZ - no Amiga core for example - it's a brilliant monitor. Do enjoy it and take really good care of it!

@@PadPoet Hi there. I'm also a happy owner of an S2133. There are other 21" 4:3s out there : Samsung 214 or Nec LCD2190UXp and p212. Great review, thanks! Too bad other companies don't have at least one 4:3 monitor for the retro community. This niche needs a little bit more competition. A gloss screen OLED or QD-OLED would be amazing! And with variable refresh rate for odd arcades and pal/ntsc oddities.

You're welcome, I'm glad the video helped out. I wish there were more 4:3 monitors to choose from, but I guess there's just no money in it. A 4:3 OLED would be very nice. Maybe EIZO will start making some in the future, but it'll probably cost 10,000 dollars or something.

bro. you're a lifesaver. I've been wanting a 4:3 monitor for ages. have been looking into getting a CRT. not even just for retro gaming but gaming in general. as a 2000s kid I feel like most games look and feel better when played on 4:3 resolutions, especially when paired up with a CRT shader via reshade. I like to pretend all the games I play are being played on my old console and tv setup. this monitor is perfect for this. I'm ordering one the week after next. thanks so much man!
p.s. I reckon if you uploaded some long form footage of gameplay on your channel when you can, that would do pretty well in terms of views. and you'd possibly start a new trend in regards to people wanting this monitor as its such a good alternative to a decent CRT. and more convenient

I really appreciate your effort to make this video. Retro PC community should be much stronger and post more videos like this. I’ve just bought one of these brand new for 500 USD locally. I am thinking of getting one more just in case from the same local guy. I also have Dell 2007FPb, HP LP2065, NEC LCD2090UXi, EIZO S2100. I’ve been collecting the ones I’ve heard about, just missing NEC P212. Too bad I probably won’t be able to compare them. I don’t know how to do it right as well as not enough of free space and a bit lazy to do so…I’ll most likely to sell the rest and keep the EIZO S2133. I however noticed something, a 19” monitor might be a better choice for very old games, the bigger the screen size the worst these very old games look. I wouldn’t go for 17” as I care about my eyes. With that being said, 21” screens are also great.

Going to facebook marketplace, amazon and youtube is amazing too. Feels very easy in the eyes. I play Fornite, GTA V and Rocket League, and 75hz is great, all the minimaps can be easily located by your eyes, going to Facebook or other pages the side panels can be easily located in your eyes. That's the reason laptops, tablets and smartphone are popular, it's because everything is easily located by your eyes. 24" monitor 1080p 16:9 was a bad idea. Great video! I've got the 2007fpb myself. The lag is fine for me so long as I make sure nothing else is laggy, like I won't use bluetooth controllers with it. The Eizo looks great but I can't spend that kind of money. If one popped up used locally for a nice price I might buy it. What makes this difficult is most of the later 4:3 screens that might have had decent refresh rates were also extremely budget, so they're usually 1024x768 or something similar, not 1600x1200.

    @xard64 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Lower input latency is crucial for a good gaming experience and while the higher refresh rate does allow better input latency on paper it does not guarantee it. For example a 120Hz monitor with 28ms input latency will be at disadvantage compared to 10ms 60Hz monitor in fast paced multiplayer game despite the difference in the refresh rate.
A time between 2000-2010 some LCD monitors had very minimal input latency due to missing scalers but as the processing units were introduced the latency hit over 48ms at worst and 2010-2020 things got slowly considerable better. Still it's not unfortunately that uncommon to get 20ms input latency on average cheap monitor though.

It noce that you can still get these and are made to this day, even acer has a couple models in 5 4 or 4 3 and offer the latest video connections, i think they are better for internet, file, and chat boxes for streaming. Some games that have limiting resolutions work wonders with these screens. 16 x 9 is the default now and uktrawide becoming more and more popular. 4x3 i dont think will go anywhere or die out just yet if there is still a demand for them

I have a Dell U2412M monitor. It is a 16:10 ratio with a resolution of 1920x1200. Like the 2007Fpb the panel is IPS which has good viewing angles. It is also LED backlit so it doesn't wear out anywhere as bad as old CCFL backlighting like my old 2007Fpb did. There is a feature to set the ratio to 4:3 so you can input any resulation upto 1600x1200 although it does not get on with the game with Psycho Pinball due to it's odd resolution.. If you have the psysical space and don't mind having the black borders on the left and right hand side this would also be an ideal cheaper alternative.

Thanks for making this video. Can you comment on how you find the monitor for general computing (browsing the web, reading text, etc)? I've heard it said that the 4:3 ratio is better for productivity than widescreen ratios, but I'm not sure how true that is.

    • @VoidbrandGallery
      @VoidbrandGallery  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

You're welcome. I heard the same, but I personally don't really find myself using it for web browsing that much unless my 1440p monitor is occupied with video editing or something. I wouldn't want to watch TH-cam videos on it because of the black bars on the top and bottom, but there's some cases where a video is in 4:3 and it'll fit the entire screen which is nice (a lot of the games I play and upload here and the other channel would fit a 4:3 monitor).
I find it perfectly fine if this was my only monitor though, I originally had this connected to a separate PC for old gaming and web browsing and didn't have any complaints with any websites I visited. Personally prefer to do spreadsheets on a 4:3 than 16:9 too.

but the thing is sometimes some games only has a counterclock orientation in the game option.

Amazing monitor, i cant afford it though sadly. Do you think the Eizo flexscan s1934 would make a good retro gaming windows xp monitor? Ive also been looking at some NEC 5:4 monitors theyre still selling on B&H

I checked it out. Response time looks a bit high (14ms), and I have no idea how high the input lag would be.

Looks like it would work with the Retrotink 5x Pro upscaler from reading this reddit thread: www.reddit.com/r/crtgaming/comments/pmiemo/retrotink_5x_scanlines_on_dell_vga_monitor/
He's using it through VGA on a 1600x1200 Dell monitor.
This user here is having trouble with the OSSC upscaler with a lot of brand monitors including EIZO: videogameperfection.com/forums/topic/cannot-get-5x-1600x1200-working-on-different-monitors-cables/
The EIZO S2133 doesn't support 50hz though, so I guess it would depend on the console's region.

@@VoidbrandGallery I have an Extron upscaler (DVS 304) and I plan to use it with a Sync Strike on the input and the Scanline generator on the output, both by Arcadeforge (haven't bought yet just have the upscaler).
I already have two very good CRT's but it is difficult to justify them if I can find a modern 4:3 LCD panel like the one you reviewed.
There is a cheaper alternative for someone wanting a 4:3 modern LCD (also rotates), the Iiyama B1780SD (17") and B1980D (19"), which you can get brand new easily. They both have a response time of 5ms, although obviously the picture quality wont quite be up to the Eizo's standard.
I've looked around and I can get the Iiyamas brand new for ~£150 or the Eizo brand new for ~£650... that's quite a stark difference so I would love to hear from someone who has compared them.

Those monitors are in 5:4 1280x1024 resolution according to the website specs. If the Extron can upscale to that resolution they look like they'd be fine. I never heard of them so something new to look for.
If a used EIZO pops up might be worth looking into unless you were looking for something new. The Dell 2007fpb seems popular in retro circles, but those early LCD monitors have input delay, and I'm hearing mixed results about it.

@@ΔαυίδΠριδεαυξ You could buy the popular Dell P1917S (also 1280x1024) instead of the liyamas because they are IPS with fast response times and very low input lag. They also have high quality coating and colors pop a lot.

  • @arncht6507

I guess a vrr oled with ossc could give a better result with pixelperfect screen. I am thinking about two ways… use the crt (i need a new desk) with retro speakers, or use a highend modern display with some studio monitors. I also have the dell 2007wp, the biggest issue is not the lag (who cares at a typical 20-30fps in dos), the background light is yellowish and it is a 60hz screen, the scroll is not nice. Recently i have bought a modern cheap dell pva - it was amiga compatible, native 70hz with smooth scroll, but yeah, compared to the ips the colors are washed out. The eizo would be better, but it is also not perfect with the 60hz (and i think it cannot accept the 15khz signal) - the perfect retro display does not exist.

Please stop this disinformation. There is no guarantee that EIZO still uses Panasonic panels. This is probably why EIZO doesn’t even publish such information as source for panels often changes. The model you saw, was tested in 2013. After reading Reddit, people say EIZO quality control went down. Just purchased two new. One has noticeable back light bleeding. Enter the panel number and you will see that it has been discontinued. Last shipment in 2020. However, EIZO could have stopped using them in their monitors years ago.
