- With the RetroTINK 4K coming out of an almost year-long private beta and now being publicly tested by some of the best people in retro, I felt it was time to do a proper introduction video. I tried to concentrate on things I felt I could add to the conversation, while also promoting upcoming videos from Digital Foundry, My Life In Gaming, GameSack and Wobbling Pixels. Rama's (3:58) profile image caught me off-guard. It's from a lesser known masterpiece anime called Fantastic Children. Class.
im so happy people are still designing stuff like this. keeping retro alive!
I want to buy one
I remember the days when everyone and their mom wanted the Frameister RGB but everyone also thought $700 was crazy expensive. We got cheaper options and now it feels like we've come full circle. Back to near $1,000 prices.
Emulators are free. Anyone buying this junk deserves to be robbed 😂
@@christophervanzettasome people love using original hardware?
Shouldnt mean we should be robbed
@@Alvarez1437ROBBING implies you were forcefully handing over your money. You don’t have to buy it.
@@MrLops914and if you quit paying these outrageous prices they might release a product priced more reasonably.

Yes, happy to see these get developed and tested with arcade boards! I would like to see it in action with one! If we can save arcades and get an authentic look from flats it will be worth it.
I have to watch this in small chunks. If I watch the whole thing I'll buy one. I don't need one! But man is it cool!
@@HeroicRecaps tinks
Nice, i want to make arcades so ill get this if it helps
Well?! Don’t keep us in suspense! Jacked to the WHAT?
Appreciate all that you do Bob.
man the 4k CRT filters really got me thinking! Thanks Bob and Mike
Thanks Bob. Very helpful (as always). Looking forward to this other than the UK price hit!
This is what I've been waiting for. With old hardware reaching increasingly absurd costs, this device with its CRT masks is the final piece of the puzzle I needed for my retro gaming renaissance to be complete. What a time to be alive.
Now we only need 4:3 aspect ratio oled display
@@TheSamp00it’s quite easy to take a 32” OLED and hide the borders inside if it bothers you
Out with the new, in with the old !
I've missed videos like this Bob; thank you so much!
Thank you for this! I've always *wanted* to like CRT filters, and this may get me there.
Great comprehensive video, as someone that isn’t into retro gaming I love watching your videos and keeping up to date with new hardware.
Great introduction and looking forward to supporting Mike again! I thought I’d be ok sticking with the RT5X but all these info dumps and actual examples have me sold on the RT4K.
Thanks Bob. I love the enthusiasm for what appears to be another great project from the great man. Whilst I could never afford to have such an amazing piece of kit, it's great to hear about the product and to see what it can do. Many thanks :)
Over the moon with the work put into the RT4K. Incredible work Mike, Bob, and those who contributed. What a monster of a machine
I'm excited for this on so many levels. Not just video game stuff, but I work with a tonne of digital preservation and AV preservation groups who will go nuts for this.
Holy moly. First time I see one of your videos and your content is so well put together, very professional, well explained. 10/10.
Subscribed!
Thank you! The weekly podcasts are all very laid back, podcast-style videos...but I try really hard to make the reviews as polished as this one.
Great video - thanks for chatting me up at rwx.
I got a 2x and a 5x that I use for my retro gaming tournaments and home use. I can’t wait to add this to my collection.
Was awesome meeting you. And thanks!
RT4K is my Christmas gift to myself. 1 for my bedroom MiSTer and 1 for my retro gaming room setup. And maybe 1 more for the theater room if the film projector BFI simulation is as good as it sounds.
The Game Sack clip you used killed me. Love Joe's sense of humor! Thanks for this great overview... you're right -- I don't need it, but I want it. 😅
This is amazing work by Mike Chi! Can't wait to get it!
I can't wait to see more coverage about PS3/Xbox360 and previous 3D consoles.
They're getting to be that age. Best to pickup any games you want now, IMO.
I wonder if the PS TV will wind up a cult classic or not.
Congrats to Mike for another spectacular offering that sets the bar yet again !
BFI is incredibly interesting. BlurBusters are doing God’s work ! Thanks to Mike & Mark.
Question:
When in FrameLock mode, on 480p HDMI input …. What is the lowest input lag possible, to the hundredth of a millisecond, when minimal anti-aliasing/jaggie-smoothing algorithms are enabled, during the trip upward from 480p/60 up to 4k/60 ?
Wow, we've come a long way since playing ROMs using SNES9x on a 1st gen LCD monitor... back then the 'best' I recall being the interpolation filter.
Take my money !!!. Can't wait. Fantastic video. Thanks.
wow, vid looks so vibrant !
Congrats , Bob !
So pumped for the amount of inputs that the 4K accepts! Even things like hdmi in that I didn’t even know I wanted until it was shown!
Thanks for such a detailed breakdown!
If nothing else, HDMI input could be nice for the PS3, later 360 models, and the PS TV.
@@SnakebitSTI i think the best console for the hdmi input just might be the wii u since a softmodded wii u can play wii u, wii, and gamecube games
@@SnakebitSTI oh yeah I’ve been playing a lot of ps3 360 recently and hadn’t even considered how good those could look properly scaled to 4K!!
I’d love to get ahold of this. My 5x has been great but having everything go directly to 4k just makes this the final solution.
Thanks for showing the Mister's direct video! I didn't even know that was a thing I until I rewatched the video!
Shame that not all cores work with it. I didn't expect Amiga games to work due to PAL signals, but the Mega Drive family of consoles not working with Direct Video was an unpleasant surprise.
The Mega Drive's all work with the RT4K and Direct Video - It's how I play them :) If you're using a RT4K, just make sure you're on the latest firmware.
YEAH, I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS!
God I can't wait for this to come out. Definitely getting myself this as a Christmas gift.
I really wish I could afford it. It’ll take my retro content to the next level
they said save 1000 dollars but know that it will be less. my guess is like 600
Idk what your budget is, but I’m sure eBay will be full of RT5Xs when this comes out. My guess is they’ll go for between $200-225 since it’s $325 for a new one
@@hhectorlector i actually have a Retrotink 5X already but I really want the 4K version
The hard part for me is I'd have to buy a new TV or monitor to utilize it fully, and that would cost more than the unit itself :p
Why would you get this when you already have a 5x? The difference is negligible @@HindsightWithHustle
I just got the 5x pro a few weeks ago to upgrade my 2x I had and was really impressed with the improvement in quality and functionality. Mike Chi makes some awesome devices! I was a little bummed out that my OLED doesn't support the 1440p output mode though, but the 1080p is still awesome. I love the scanlines and CRT filters in the 5x and can't wait to see what the 4k can do.
Which OLED do you have?

Excellent video. John's tweets had already got my interest, but I think this video just guaranteed Mike an extra sale
13:11 this right here. Insane. It makes the CG mario kary renders look like theyre a generation ahead. Might have to get this after all
this is really interesting and it looks like a fantastic product
Thanks Bob! Have fun at RWX!
I cannot wait to get my hands on one!
Incredible! Thanks for the video, Bob! And bless Mike for this incredible machine! We are truly living in the future 😎
No, you're not living in the future you're living in the past and paying a premium to do so.
I've had my eyes on the 5X for a while, but hearing about the 4K option changes the game for me. I still play on my WiiU and PS3 often enough to keep them plugged in, so having a scaler with HDMI input as well is awesome! Really looking forward to a full release.
This is real exciting stuff.
Mike Chi you are the man!
We are at an incredible time with so much choice and quality!
Thanks for the great overview. I don't really use a 4k tv aside from streaming. My projector is 1080p and most of my retro gaming happens on my 720p plasma 😅
Wow very informative video. I learn a lot
This is definitely the best way to play X360/PS3, or really anything with 720/1080p on a modern 4k TV. I hope Mike keeps these in production for awhile because I'll probably get one but not for another year
This looks like it will be a great product for sure if you have deep enough pockets to afford it. I currently have an XRGB Framemeister Mini which my PS2 is hooked up through but the 4k upscaling on this looks like it will be a game changer.
I will be getting this to play my Dreamcast and GameCube games on my 77C1
I’m ready for it Bob! Can’t wait to give Mike my money. Please Mike take my money!
I'm glad people can now experience retro games closer to what they are designed to look like. For a long time people said it wasn't possible, its been almost 20 years since lcd's got popular so its surprising it took this long. I remember when people said 3 frames of lag wasn't a big deal.
LCDs still won't be able to recreate the CRT experience well even with the RT4K. You'll need an OLED for that.
Thats why i play 16bit and older predominantly on my phone vs my rig etc, snes and genesis are my favorite retro era that i grew up with. Cant stand the lag on games like mario, Fzero and star fox.
I dislike the "designed to look like" thing. Because it's up for debate whether those games were meant to look crystal clear, as all the testing would have been done on a CRT.
@@awii.neocitiesDevelopers 100% designed the games around what they look like on a consumer crt. I don’t really understand the argument that they weren’t
@@Mishkobt I assume the argument is that the developers may have had access to LCD screens when creating their game, but I still don't understand either.
Great video, one thing that i always though when i saw mike and others creating those upscalers, is that if would be possible to implement or create a box to implement FSR on the image to be used in 7th gen consoles, I think if it is possible would be incredible, but i understand that this is kind of not the scoped of these projects (that is why I made the sugestion of other device...).
Oh boy its been a long wait for the Tink 4k but well worth it
Hell yeah, love my 5x pro but I need this.
I can't wait to get my hands on that HDMI input.
Great vid Bob!
Great video!
I had to shamelessly get subscribed to your channel - this presentation took out that geeky old me from wherever he was hiding in there😂
Whoever your name is, congratulations for your enthusiasm and commitment to those things that you love.
I don't like CRT emulation, though. Nothing like the real thing...
The BFI and pull-down is great, I imagine high end home cinema to adopt the 4k
Started with the OSSC, now I have much more disposable income, I am definitely buying this!
Damn this is the be all end all device, can’t wait!
Incredible, I can’t wait!
I've set up all my old consoles years ago for RGB SCART and a CRT and right now it's my preferred way of playing older consoles. I use an OSSC as well and while it gets the job done It's not perfect. Being able to scale just about anything up to 4K lwith minimal lag and without artifacts or bad filters is really amazing, this will even be great for 720p PS3/360 era games. Never been a fan of "fake" scanlines but this looks really impressive. It only needs to be more affordable but I'm sure that will happen some day.
Maybe one day, but the FPGA that powers this thing is several hundred dollars by itself so I wouldn't count on it getting much cheaper for a long time
I am so happy to see this device and really can't wait for the full release to see final price and what it can be pushed to do. Have to ask though, what is the chance a v2 will be released with HDMI 2.1 at some point in future? yes it will be more money, but if we are already putting our hand in our pocket to pay close to $1000, not many of us will complain about an extra $50/$100/$150 to have the latest HDMI standard and potentially have more 4k modes opened up as well.
I asked Mike the same question. It would raise the price so high, that it's not even worth it. So my guess is it'll be *years* before we see one that can go as high as 8K60 / 4K120.
Very cool, and I do in fact love the CRT filters.
Though, retrotink always makes me wish a box like this existed for the opposite (digital-to-analogue) so I could use hdmi/dp on my CRT TV's easily.
You can downscale for use with a CRT with this too :) Same with the RT5x and the GBS-Control
Mike Chi is a credit the retro community, what an amazing asset. I hope this thing kills it. I know I'm buying one. That CRT emulation blows me away.
love it! gonna have to start saving up now tho. should i still keep my 5x ?
verry cool video, would love to see an AA thing added to the tink4k.
That intro for your brand was great!
Thank you!
MY BODY IS READY!
My wallet isn’t!
I need more boolet sir
Loving this
Great video, love the shared efforts here with the other channels too. Real community.
The per core settings for Mister would be awesome. If the Tink 4k doesn't have network access, it could be possible if it has some kind of command line interface via USB. Someone could theoretically create a tiny web service that can control the tink (maybe pico w?), so the Mister could announce what it's launching (either a web request to the tink or a broker in the middle) and launch the correct profile.
From an implementation standpoint, I imagine it would be easier to code MISTer cores to display a test pattern at startup for the scaler to lock on to.
It seems to me that when you get an LCD with 8k resolution, the emulated phosophor stripes will be the same size as the stripes on the macro of the D32 mask.
Now this is gunna be fun!
Great video thank you :)
Fuck Bob, awesome vídeo as always.
Like you said, this thing is so awesome thats you want to have one of these.
Thank you for your time on this video 👍
This product looks so cool. Is it possible that automatic optimizations could be implemented like what we have with the Retro Scaler A1?
One feature I would have liked to have seen was the addition of a network port or WiFi to be able to control this from something like an Extron IPCP or a Raspberry Pi running BridgeCMDR or Home Assistant/Whatever solution you like. Can probably get a lot of functionality working via an IR blaster but some kind of networked based command and control setup would have been amazing. As someone who has multiple switches (one component/composite and two HDMI switches) I currently have to keep a cheat sheet for what the magic combination is to get each system running and then have to load the correct profile on my RT5X. Be nice if I could just fire off an automation on my phone or a tablet and have all the right inputs selected and the correct profile loaded on the RT.
Cannot WAIT for this. I love my Tink 5X. Anyone want to buy my old Framemeister?
man your intro is so awesome!
Thanks so much! That's a song I wrote for a previous band - I had it turned into chiptunes, then my friend Kenji made that video for me.
I’m excited for this
so stoked
I wonder if RetroTink will ever make a standalone external BFI/strobing box, as this is the only feature I am interested in, I use my CRTs for retro games, I also use my 21" CRT monitors for modern gaming, but I'd love to have the option to use an 32" 240hz RGB-OLED monitor when one finally comes out for modern gaming, especially the upcoming dual-stack RGB-OLED displays, can you imagine really good quality 240hz BFI combines with a 4K dual-stack RGB-OLED, that just might give the FW900 a run for its money. Though ultimately I'd like to see something like a 1000hz subfield drive used with dual-stack RGB-OLED, the same tech that gave Plasma perfect 60hz CRT grade motion clarity, I wonder if Plasma's subfield drive can be simulated like CRTs rolling-scan drive can, or Panasonic's focussed field drive that ran @ 2500hz, they even had a 1600hz version of it for LCD's, so imagine how good OLED could be with it, OLED should NEVER have been sample and hold driven in the first place, that's an interesting thought though, I see BFI as just a bandaid to a really big problem, OLED needs a permanent motion clarity solution to do that instant pixel response justice.
You got a new sub, thanks bro ❤️ Stay digital
It's everything I ever wanted! All In One with SCART, VGA, HMDi, 4K, actually good CRT filters, profiles, etc! Unfortunately the final price will most probably still be WAAAYYYY out of my league, unless I get lucky and buy one in 2nd hand down the road. Cheap used SONY CRTs will continue to do the heavy work for now.
Looking to replace my Framemeister with an all in one solution and this seems to be the product!
I hope the RetroTink 5x Pro will be on sale when the RetroTink 4K appears 🙏
And here I am still using my Framemeister. I might finally have a meaningful upgrade to look forward to.
Finally VGA support.
The stock 720 x 480P on Dreamcast looks sharper and better than composite/SVideo with the RetroTink 5X even on my 4K Samsung TV since SVideo and composite don't make use of the VGA resolution and it's a noticeable difference.
(This is for PAL Dreamcast, NTSC uses 640 x 480P, not 720 x 480P)
13:09 Wow, that does justice to the original graphics.
Who needs atmos when you have roland mt-32 😂 - just like always the awesomest review, as always!
I already have 4k! OSSC + mClassic + 4k Gamer pro. With an hdmi switch, it supports hdmi as well. No lag and I love it. I bet this will be awesome too.
I have never subscribed to a channel just for its intro video, until now. That intro was fucking amazing.
Thanks so much!!! I did the song and my friend Kenji did the graphics.
i'm so excited for this. i have the 2x and 5x and they're great products
also, shout out to you Bob! comprehensive yet beginner-friendly videos - not easy to do, but you're a pro
2X Pro, 2XPM, and 5X for me. Love them all. I've kept the 2X Pros on display and will do the same with the 5X if I get a 4K.
love everything about this. just my 2 cents here. I used to play OG xbox games and alot of them were 30p back in the day. (eg halo1) but with my new xbox all these "remastered" games are 60p and just don't "feel" the same. Do ya think the RetroTINK 4k could add a frame rate decimator to convert my new xbox back to 30p?
I want one of these for my PS2, PS1, Dreamcast, Wii and N64. My older 2D consoles I prefer to play on my Sony Trinitron TV. I can't wait to test this out with my Gem upgraded PS2 with some Xenosaga.
Similar interest because i bought all the Analogue systems so i connect those to my modern TV and have basically retired the original 2D consoles for rare uses.
Doing that allowed me to put some of my PS2, PS1, Wii, Saturn and N64 under my CRT TV but i will like to be able to use them on my modern TV so i need devices like this for that.
Very much looking forward to this scaler’s release. Based on the value of Mike’s other products-I believe him when he says he thinks we’ll be “pleasantly surprised” by the price
I am waiting with my upscaler purchase until this thing comes out. This is bonkers.
I’ve been waiting for this video, and I remember Mike saying on his website to set aside around $1000 for this. I thought “I’ll just stick to my Tink 5X”, but dude, this is absolutely insane. Screw the rent, lol
"Screw the rent" great philosophy to live by.
Might gift myself one at the end of the year :)
Cant wait to record some direct capture Arcade games in 4k
Finally a good bluray player for retro games!!
It's been a while since I've been thinking about updating my collection to be 100% digital. The only problem is that the mods on the market don't do native upscale, hdmi upscalers to 4k are bad and the TVs even worse. But with that, everything changes! Because before the consoles I saw with digital mods were with the quality worse than mine with component cables upscaled by my ossc, but it seems that this will no longer be the case. Looking forward to Digital Foundry's video.
Good stuff
