    Always good to revisit the basics from time-to-time. The Button Function Cheat Sheets are awesome -- great idea. Thanks!

    Very informative and very accurate, as always; thanks a lot!
    (funny fact: I owned the R5 since more than 5 months, until I discovered it actually had a locking button :) Reasons are several: a) I did not particularly need it, to start searching for it; b) I added a metal cage to the camera body on day one, so it was kind of hidden by that, and c) It was no longer placed in plain sight where I was used to see it, as a slider near the backwheel, like on my old 5D Mark 3.)

    Thanks for the great review. I know there is a way to bring up a screen that shows a list of the buttons and current function. It also shows wireless/bluetooth status. I remember holding a button for a few seconds to bring it up but I can't remember how. Any thoughts on that?

      I can't think of a button function or combination that does what you're describing. So if you do manage to stumble across it again, I'd love to know what you did as that sounds really handy.

    Hi, and thanks! I came across your video while searching for reasons why my R5 setting for Shutter btn Function for Movies won't SAVE the consistent change I need to have the camera use the shutter button to start video. That setting is attached to being able to use the external cable to my cage rigs as well. I have to go back in and change that setting every single time I use the camera, camera turns off, switch saved modes, etc. The setting won't persist continually. Ideas? Thanks in advance!

      It sounds like your problem has to do with the way your custom shooting modes are set up.
      Custom shooting modes (C1-C3) save their settings completely separately from the standard AE modes (Tv, Av, M, etc.) and each other (C1 doesn't share anything with C3). You'll need to set the movie shutter button function to start/stop recording for each of those settings as well as once for the standard Tv/Av/M modes (you can pick one they all share the same settings). You can update the current custom shooting mode by enabling setting the shutter function then going in to the custom shooting mode menu and saving over the current custom shooting mode.
      Moreover, by default the camera will reset any changes to whatever was saved in the C# mode when the power cycles or the camera sleeps. You can override the latter behavior by enabling "Auto update set" in the custom shooting mode menu. But that will always update the settings with your changes.
      Hope that helps.

    Perhaps I am doing something wrong. I thought I saw you pressing M-fn multiple times and then automatically switching through C1, C2, C3 and whatever you like. I only can add the function Mode to this button. Not a specific mode or press once-C1 second press=C2 and so on. Can you explain what you did please. Firmware 1.70

      In this video or a different one?
      In this video, the only thing I showed with the M-Fn button is stepping through the default dial function menu.
      Off the top of my head, I can't think of any time I've stepped through the custom shooting modes in sequence by pressing the M-Fn button. And unfortunately, I'm kind of drawing a blank on if that's even possible at the moment.

    Can someone explain to me the reason someone would use the magnify button while shooting?(not while reviewing a shot) I’ve seen people use this function while shooting while watching street photography TH-cam videos but don’t quite understand the reason they use it

    • @PointsInFocus
      @PointsInFocus  ปีที่แล้ว

      Most likely they're using it to focus or confirm focus.

    Canon unfortunately lacks the dedicated buttons that most semi-pro cameras have had for years: ISO, exposure compensation, bracketing, shooting mode. The buttons also have the same texture and similar height, which doesn't help when using them. The final problem is that none of the buttons are backlit, which makes them difficult to use in poorly lit environments.

    • @PointsInFocus
      @PointsInFocus  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For ISO, there's a dedicated dial now instead of having to push a button then turn a dial. I've used both systems (Canon's DSLRs had ISO buttons), and the dedicated ISO dial is better.
      Exposure compensation (in AE modes) has always been directly controlled though rear dial on Canon's mid and higher end cameras. The same is true for the R5. If you're a Manual+Auto ISO user, you can either program one of the buttons on the camera to do EC, or you can program the RF lens's control ring to do EC (this is what I do).
      I'm not sure what you mean by shooting mode, as there's very clearly a mode button on the top fo the R5 and mode dials on all of the lower tier EOS Rs. The R5 and R3, like the EOS-1 DSLRs before them control the mode electronically.
      As for bracketing, I don't think that's ever been a good use of a button on a space limited camera. On something like an EOS-1 where there's room on the left shoulder, sure. But the reality is bracketing is something that's not frequently done by the vast majority of users, and is never anywhere near as time sensitive as something like changing the ISO or EC. That said, it is a notable omission that you can't program one of the buttons to adjust bracketing.
      As for needing texture, I've never had a problem with that due to the layout. The important ones for shooting are all positionally referenced from your neutral finger positions. AF-On is to the left of your thumb, AE Lock is to the right, etc. The buttons on the rear (review, etc.) yea, they might warrant some textural indicator, but I'm not sure how much sense that makes either. I think they're a better candidate for back lighting honestly. Of course, the problem with texture as a primary reference is that it's useless if you have gloves on.
      That said, back lighting is something I'd really like to see Canon add.
