I worked at Marshall’s for years. We never allowed returns when it came to makeup/skin care. The only way a return was allowed is if the product was sealed. Maybe that was a my store only policy

I worked at Marshall’s for almost a year and we definitely put makeup back on the floor sometimes. When someone would return something we would set it on the back counter, and throughout the day/at closing we would put all the returns back on the floor. But sometimes the things on the back counter were for price checks, so as the person who puts the front counter things back on the floor, you wouldn’t know if it was for a price check or if it was a return cause they never separated them or anything. Personally I would never buy makeup that was already opened or looked tampered with cause, like Shane said in the video, people come in and mess with the stuff. All the products come new but over time they get nasty and we were never told to price them out unless they were absolutely unusable.

If it’s opened or used even once we don’t give a full $ return & won’t put it back on the floor (we have testers & artists for everything! @@america4438 I’ll clarify my statement for you since I said this is false: I worked at Sephora and other retailers (but never TJ max specifically) so I know it CAN happen. I’m sure it does happen at TJ Max sometimes, but we had policies against this because it’s a lawsuit waiting to happen. Do you really believe customers don’t come in on a weekly basis and threaten to sue if anything is remotely wrong with a product they purchased? Because they do. I don’t believe TJ MAX doesn’t have said policies, I do believe it can happen by accident, and I also believe Shane and Jeffrey have a reason to exaggerate the story.

    A few things
    1. A lot of “Marshall’s employees” in the comments saying they don’t allow returns on those things. I have definitely tried things, not liked them, and had never had any issues returning to Marshall’s, TJMaxx, etc. They definitely accept all returns like that.
    2. I was grossed out by Shane’s video but not surprised. Companies, especially the huge ones, do not care about safety, sanitation, or morals. They care about money. Customers are a dime a dozen for them. Places like target may not put certain items back on the shelves but what they will do is sell damaged, defective, or used items to liquidation stores. They make a quick buck selling them their returns knowing they are selling poor quality items. They do the same thing TJMaxx is doing, but they just aren’t selling it themselves. They sell it TO a company to do it for them.

Still, some of the make up sold in these places are noticeable tampered with by the customers already and look beat up. Even higher end places like Sephora use testers for peoples make up. I found out that the previous counter managers, and the other current managers were keeping the products themselves or making the returns testers and then keeping the unopened TESTER products corporate sent us for themselves. I work for TJX in Canada . To be honest throughout my time working with them, I’d say mostly everything returned ends back on the sales floor or written off if we can’t sell it. Could be different at other stores. I definitely think used makeup more often than not does come back on the sales floor, but we do inspect it. It would be a loss for the company if everything got thrown out simply because it’s opened or was assumed to be used by the customer. Without a doubt it’s gross to think about, but I mean what do you expect?Besides, customers often tamper with packaging in store since we only put higher price ticketed items in lockboxes or secure with spider tags to prevent theft. Sometimes because of that people blind buy and return products if they don’t like it. We also have a lenient return policy and customer satisfaction is very important to the company. We are also very flexible with policies. Because of that we accept it back even if its the most nasty and obviously used. If an associate comes to recover returns and doesn’t check the product even those can make it out to the floor.
