We flew to Skopje in North Macedonia and here are my first impressions. Fun fact: this video was filmed in June 2018, so at the time of recording the country was still called Macedonia. They have now changed the name to North Macedonia!
This is the first episode from a trip I did with my Mum through Eastern Europe in the summer of 2018. I didn't publish them at the time because I wanted to catch up on my posting schedule and so I ended up skipping a whole bunch of videos. Now I have the chance to catch up and share them with you!

A tip if u travel to skopje know taxis over price torists and the buses want 2 pounds for a card u might only use once in ur life it was way better with the paper cards before
I went to Skopje this past year and the fortress was all cleared out. You could walk around everywhere.
It was much busier and was in August. Not extremely busy like an Amsterdam. Well worth it. We climbed the cross and it was a great lookout.
This reminded me of my time there. I am looking forward to Ohrid.

Terrible city! The Disneyland of Europe. I don't even know what to say. Millions spent to make Greek heroes and Bulgarian heroes their own. The history of this cou try lies within the last 100 yrs. Ex Slavic nation trying very hard. Boring city!

About it being an empty city, the people in Skopje are really dispersed throughout the city and very few actually live in the city center. The parts where you walked are the tourist parts and there aren't many tourists so. You could see more people in a local mall.

Thanks for the video, Macedonia is an amazing place to visit and live as well, I lived there for 5 years and it was best days of my life, nice people and a lot of beautiful places to visit in Skopje and outside Skopje as well.

Thanks for the honest review of the city I was born in. Some hotels need improvement in terms of the rooms the tourists stay in, but overall it's great. I also did ask a couple of football fans whether Skopje is good and they said that the city is decent to visit

It is actually pretty good, especially if you don't have money and can't go somewhere better like Greece, tbh even Greeks go there, very cheap vacations like Turkey

Greetings! I am from Skopje and I just saw your vlog. I do hope you and your mother had a wonderful time here and that you would recommend Skopje to your friends and followers. Just like you said, Skopje is very cheap and the food is amazing. Unfortunately you have only visited a few attractions, generally in the city center. There is much, much more to see, like the Millennium Cross on top of the mount Vodno after a joyful 7 minute ride on the zip line that takes you there and the astonishing natural beauty of The Canyon Matka. Good thing you liked Skopje. Hope you enjoyed Ohrid also. I've been to both of them this year. I loved spending time there, I wish a lot of people will discover North Macedonia, it's a very interesting place, with a nice mix of cultures and religions.

Did a quick trip visiting Skopje, Ohrid, Pristina & Tirana back in November of last year.. Great stuff. I also found that Skopje was really quiet for a capital city. But great city nonetheless, with Ohrid probably my favourite out of all of them.

First of all thanks for the good words and marketing of my country on youtube,second its not you that feels like that here almost all of the tourist that come and make videos about Macedonia speak the same things and comments,third thing is about the unfinished building at the castle.It was suppose to be a chirch but becouse of the multy ethnical conflict we had the construction was stoped and it was left like you saw it.Anyways thanks again for the good revew of Skopje and you are welcome anytime to come and visit :)

Next time you go to Macedonia, go to Bitola! Very small town, but beautiful! You have Baba Mountain, Heraclea, Bazaar, Sirok Sokak, Sv. Jovan (beautiful view of the city) Ciflik Winery, Sumski Feneri (restaraunt) Belvedere (another restaraunt) " the planes" which are up on a hill that you can see Bitola.
And cheaper than skopje

12:45 While Skopje is the capital and does get lot of tourists in the past 10 years or so, the center of tourism is actually in Ohrid with it's lake.
My best trips were with my son. The familiarity made for such a relaxing holiday. If we didn’t want talk it was fine we didn’t have to small talk or Entertain each other. You will both cherish this memory together. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦🍷🍷🍷

I was able to go to Skopje a couple times while on US Army deployment to Kosovo in 2016-2017. It's a cool little place and I remember it was a bit cleaner than Kosovo.
Only a bit as u said, but at least skopjan are more educated, while in Kosovo u can't go out if u don't carry a bazooka..

Bro the hotel you were staying at on god is like 50 steps from where i live i might've even maybe walked past you since I cross that path at the church and the giant horse statue very often.
Sidenote I don't like that hotel very much, I once went to their vending machine to grab a snack and it ate my 20 denars without giving me anything back and the owner was like whatever

Another thing. If you are rating the prices by meals, it is cheap. But the drinks are what really hit your pocket. Living in bitola, I some times spend about 30$ per night just for drinks. I drink whiskey and a glass of a decent whiskey is about 5 dollars, so if you want to have a good time, you better be ready to spend 1/5 of your monthly salary each month on alcohol.
Thanks for visiting, You would not get into trouble as a foreigner for riding the bus without a fare, we don't care. You are tourists. Enjoy it :D

Skopje is pretty busy but since is Corona virus people are scared to hang out
Interestingly, in this video minute 7:22 you havent noticed the old man with guitar which we called is (çiftelie) he is Albanian and playing an Albanian song because as matter of historical background in North Macedonia it has 45% of Albania minority residents and you should pay attention also to the history of these countries of Western Balkans which they are suffering from division and territorial disputes.
Exactly Skopje is Albanian and those mosques were made for the Albanians in the bazaar you can the Albanian flags and the Turks and gypsies speaking Albanian over 1 million Albanian in maceodnia ajd maceodnia have been influenced by Albania
@@infuriousgamer1505 Honestly you're so stupid. The mosques were built when the Ottomans took over (like 400 years ago). Also, the albanians imigrated to Macedonia during WW2 when Albania became a dictatorship
Actually they were around 20-25% but today are less than 20%. This is because many Albanians left the country, they live now mostly in Switzerland, Germany, Sweden looking for a better life that neither macedonian nor albanian politicians were able to offer them...

Was it Anja apartments? I don't recommend them. I am a Macedonian myself and when I traveled back to Macedonia in January, we were staying in Anja apartments but in the center. We did see these apartments as well, and those in the center seemed better to us. I will never go there again. They can buy new furniture and especially new sheets. I will not even speak about housekeeping, the housekeeper was fine, except they didn't have a hoover. TV that didn't work, and often there wasn't water.

Lina The Great Lina The Great Skopje was always ours from the existence of the city since was named Scupi when it was capital city of Dardanians (Illyrian tribe) till the earthquake of 1963 Skopje was inhabited by albanians after the quake the city started rebuilding and the only purpose of Yugoslavian regim was to fill the city with north macedonians giving them free apartments, plots etc.

Lake ohrid is the Best
This reminds me of Romania and Bucharest when I went there last Christmas. Eastern Europe is such an underrated place to visit when looking for places to go and is quite cheap compared to most other European countries even when travelling all the way from Australia.
