My aunt had two golden retrievers (at different times) and both were amazing. I had a blood clot on my brain in 2009. I was hospitalized for 3 weeks. When I got home, my aunt's golden retriever stayed by my side the whole time. She knew something was wrong with me, and stayed by my side.

My first dog was a golden retriever. We got her from someone who realized they couldn't take care of her when I was about 4. She was still just a tiny puppy. She passed away last year from cancer. She was so loyal and protective. I think she thought of my brother and me as her puppies. One time when I was little I dressed her up in one of my princess dresses and a pair of fairy wings and she just stood there so calmly. Once we were walking in the woods behind our house and two big white dogs without their owner started following us home and my sweet girl circled my brother and me the entire way back and never let those dogs near us. Golden Retrievers are such wonderful dogs. Ashley (my dog) helped me through so much. 💞💞💞

We have a golden retriever, he was donated to my son after his first cancer diagnosis. He was so loyal and loving to my son. When my son relapsed and passed away, our golden instantly became my emotional support. He always know when I need a kiss or I am having anxiety. He kept me from laying in bed and falling into a depression. Love the breed and absolutely love our Max.

I injured my back so bad it was so hard to get out of bed. Some days I wanted to give up. Holly showed me why I had to live life the new way. I will be eternally grateful to her forever. My George is a Golden rescue. I adore him. He is not my dog. George is my child. When I went to see him the first time I knew we were meant to be together when he sat on my foot. That night he realized he had been given away again and he was so sad that I slept on the floor next to him. Then I would go to the living room several times each night and lie next to him, hold him and tell him that his troubles were over and that he would be with me forever. After the first week he crept into my bedroom and slept on the floor next to me. Then in another week I told him to get on the bed and he has been my bed buddy ever since. I take him with me wherever I go. I had to go to Connecticut last August and I looked around until I found a hotel where George would be welcome. He's my constant companion. I honestly believe he and I are soul mates!
You are so right about their personalities. George is like having a very trusting 4 year old child. I cannot recommend Goldens highly enough. There is no better dog on earth.

I had a Golden Retriever Border Collie cross, Sammy. He was amazing!! So smart, lots of energy! He was the class clown. He tried to make people laugh! He was a total Goofy Goldie! Sammy passed away when he was 15 years old and had the most amazing full life with his adopted Border Collie mix brother. My golden retriever was adopted from an Amish puppy mill where she had many puppies. I call her my Archangel and the progenitor of love💕. I tell her how loving and beautiful she is. I tell her how she was the mother of all those loving puppies that went out all over the country and maybe the world to spread their unconditional love everywhere they went and to everyone they met. She goes bouncing and hopping like a bunny running through woods and along a river so thrilled to be outside. She’ll circle around me three times so excited to be at a dog park and around other dogs. She’s her happy go lucky goof ball self.

I've had Goldens for at least 25 years. All but the 2 I have now have been from rescues. One of the 2 I have now is a 6 year cancer survivor, and when he was going through chemo, as tired as he was, he was always trying to help others, for instance, I was watching into the hallway to see if I could see the techs bringing Hudson to me, I saw him, and they were bringing him from room to room, I asked why, they did that, and they said Hudson has this amazing gift of calming down other animals going through chemo, and another time, I was at the desk paying for his treatment, and there was a dog shivering, head down, and Hudson kept pulling me towards this dog, the human said, please my dog is nervous keep your dog away, I said, I get it, this is a scary journey that we're all on, but I'd like you to just trust me for 1 minute, if something happens, I'll quickly remove my dog from your dogs personal space, Hudson approached that dog, laid his head on hers, and you could see every bit of anxiety and fear leave her body, and when Hudson knew the dog was okay, he backed away and the owner was left speechless, thanking us. Another time Hudson was done chemo & I was anxious to get on the road as I had my 3 other dogs with me and the drive home was 3 & 1/2 hours long, I was waiting to pay and there was an old man with his head in his hands, and of course Hudson was drawn to him, he pulled me over to the man, put his head on the mans lap and the man sobbed into Hudson's head until he felt better. Come to find out, this man had his 12 year old Golden in for her 3rd round of chemo. Many of our other Golden's who have since passed have some cool stories too, but Hudson is a true healer

I’ve had 5 Golden Retrievers. We got our first from a puppy mill … we had no idea way back in 1992 and learned all about them. We then got a second as a puppy from a friend who changed her mind about having a puppy. Sam was left in his house after his owners moved and he was amazing (he was around 3).Next came Gus at 18 months old and Gus was an angel dog. He had elbow dysplasia and his owners wanted a dog who could run. He became a therapy dog who visited mentally ill teens and adults for 6 years. Then a neighbor recommended Auggie Doggie (formerly Bentley) …. a divorced a uprise his ex wife and daughter with him and they just couldn’t deal with a puppy … he is from a small puppy mill in Utah and that dad paid $3,000 for him and were told he was a “trained service dog.” He spent the next 3 months basically in a crate. We had lost Gus in April and it was just August … taking him was the best decision we ever made. He became or COVID dog and is more spoiled than the other 4 … if that is possible. Since 2010, we have also supported the Morris Animal Foundation/Colorado State University 3,000 Golden Retriever lifetime cancer study that is studying cancer in dogs, following 3,000 Goldens for their lifetime …Goldens because their rates of cancer are so high … all 4 of mine had some form or even forms of cancer. You are right though, best breed imaginable and just angel dogs!

They are the best dogs. We got our first golden retriever in 1997 as a puppy. We had her until 2011. Then, we rescued one in 2012 that was 7 yrs old. We had her until early 2020. In April 2020, we rescued TWO - both females - aged 4 & 5. We are blessed to have had all of them in our lives. Our current ones, Minnie and Molly are simply the best dogs. Love what you do and how you save dogs.

I still cry when I think about my Chakra. Lee, I had my special golden named Chakra for 13.5 years. She was/is SO SO special. I loved all my dogs but Chakra was just SPECIAL. They are as close to human as a dog can get. Angels? Absolutely! And BEAUTIFUL too. Another word is MAGICAL. I visit my girl's grave about once a month. She got me through the toughest of times. I will never forget my special girl. I cry as I write this. I miss her so much. I took care of her every day with walks, brushing, flea combing... everything. Baths every week. When she was younger she could FLY through the air and catch balls. Goldens are the BEST DOGS on earth! I am so blessed to have had one with me during my most difficult times.

She wasn't home much and I wanted a dog, but wasn't sure. It was one of the best weeks of my life. The family has a new baby coming and not the dog doesn't have the best manners (good but not gentle with treats). So I put ham in my fingers but wouldn't give much. He didn't do a thing. And during that week I taught him not to be so grabby. When my friend came to get him she told me the owners said "we don't know what you did to Louis but he's been so nice" 😆 I'm hoping he remembers not to steal food out of babies hands.

The closest in personality traits to the Golden Retriever is the Labrador. The one I had, Codie, a yellow lab was indeed human like. You could talk to her like she was your child and she actually responded without hesitation. She had a flawless memory and could pick out any toy you gave a name to-- in her case it was about 50. I had a party at my house and while talking to a friend sort of nonchalantly asked Codie to get her giraffe, then changed my mind and said big bear. My friend and I went out onto the porch, sat down to enjoy our drinks- Codie showed up. We looked on the ground and there was big bear and the giraffe. Very impressive.

Having taken in a 4 year old Golden Retriever rescue, I know exactly what you mean. I had my only little pack of 5+ rescue dogs of all shapes and sizes and I would often adopt very old senior dogs so that they could spend their last however long in comfort. Jock, my Retriever would help the senior dogs get up the steps into the house and check everyone else was okay before he went in. He would play hide and seek with my horse and taught the others how to do it. When my mum was in her 80s and was devastated by the passing of my dad, Jock just pottered about with her - always gentle and soft. You are so right Lee; if there is such a thing as a guardian angel, they don't have wings, they have four feathered paws and the kind of soft brown eyes that just wrap you in love.

When I was around 15 yrs old, lots of my family was gathered in her small living room while my grandma was in the kitchen. She was talking about how well behaved Xylo was, and never ever went tinkle in the house. Less than a minute after she said that, he went under a table for all of us to see... and there was a river flowing... we died laughing 🤣🤣🤣 . We were all so sure he understood her perfectly, and maybe he was annoyed with her.... but what a sense of humor he had. We ALL loved him. We never told her what he did! She used to take him to the "Lighthouse" and "Jewish guild for the blind in NYC and other places. He was a "Star"!! 🙂🙂🙂

My dad committed suicide when I was 6 and it came back to almost destroy me with depression and anxiety and so on in my early to mid twenties.
Lived far away. I pretended I was okay. When I visited I usually came in late. He would great me and just lay his head on my shoulder and just stay there for as long as I needed to cry. (Usually he was super high energy) He was the only one I wasn’t afraid and ashamed to be vulnerable around.
I think without him I wouldn’t have made it through those years.
To this day I get teary eyed thinking about my brother, cause that’s what he was and will always be to me… RIP Rufus 🙏🏻

Lea, you have made me cry on many of your posts, cause dogs have always been part of my life. But where Goldens are concerned having had 2 out of the 10 in my 67 yrs, were the nannies to my children ,then again to my grandkids. They are between human and angels. The way Trina was at my side every min while pregnant and after with my kids. Then with grans the same way. Megan Never left them alone, even in beds and snow and water. So loving to all in the family and I still miss then so much. I still cry telling you this!! And the chocolate labs are my second loves. Had 3 and as u know, so close to the Goldens and my heart. By the way, 6 out of ten,all rescues and the norwegian elkhound I have now. But she rescued me, from a deep dark hole when husband died and all we had, antiques and large home we built on 10 acres, all auctioned off. He and I had been together since 16 yrs and he passed at 57. Never been with anyone else. So to move, without him or any of our belongings, leaving the pet cemetery, just about broke me. But this elkie Trixie was a blessing I didn't expect!! Anyway, sorry I got Wayland, I am like u 🤪 that way. I could tell u dog stories for days!! But I so love to read about u and the sanctuary. It's a beautiful thing that u get to follow ur heart and ur passion!! Lucky man, lucky animals, beautiful life for all!! Keep up the great work and enjoy every minute!! BLESS YOU LEA ASHER!!
    With love and peace, Patty

I used to raise Goldens. I can attest to that quality about them. My male, Gold Baron III saved my life multiple times, he never left my side, was the most loving, gentle soul. My female, Misty Cedar Dawn, nurtured every living creature on the farm, from humans to bunnies to newborn foals. When I lost them, at 14 and 15 respectively I didn’t have the heart to go on without them.

We rescued a golden retriever/pit bull mix. He was about 3 years old and he actually picked us out at an adoption event. He was so well behaved, smart but most of all loving. We had him for 7 years until he passed away quickly with Hemangiosarcoma. He's been gone for 2 years and I still miss that boy of mine like it was yesterday.

I had my sweet Golden Belle for only 8 short years..hip got her. When she was about 1 year she would take Christmas ornaments off the tree slowly so I didn't notice right away finally my daughter and I said where are all of these special and delicate ornaments. I caught her in the act and followed her. They were all under my bed unbroken. She probably had 25 ornaments under there. Miss her so much..

I had a golden retriever-leonberger mix, and yes she was so lovely, beautiful, very clever and funny . Unfortunately she died young (3 yrs), after a week of severe sickness where we had to cool her down every hour (day and night) or she would go into shock because of the fever. Every day at the vets, and were eventually sent to a pet hospital. We brought her there on Friday evening, saturday morning they called us that she died during the night. All by herself, alone in a kennel. I was so heart broken, took me years and years to recover, and still , after appr 30 yrs it is still hard when I think of that time.

I see your goldens are also the branch managers. My golden sometimes brings his branches home with him and manages the crap out of them inside of my house. I do joke with my neighbors that I rent him out for clean renewable wood shipping purposes. He will take your sticks or anything else and chip them up into nice mulch. You will not have any bushes left on your property so forget having nice landscaping. At least for the first few years anyway. He’s no longer eating my socks thankfully. I can buy a little better quality rather than an eight dollar pack of 20. Now he just brings them to me very wet and slobbery. He does have slug like slime in his mouth. This is the first for all of my goldens. And he breathes this very hot vapor mist that will leave your clothing a bit damp just by breathing on you. But the love and excitement he has is irreplaceable. God I love my Doggy

I had a wonderful golden boxer mix for 16 incredible years. I rescued her when she was 5 months old by a young mother who couldn't handle her. She had the energy, intensity, loyalty, and intelligence of a boxer and the love of a golden. She was amazing - especially in her later years when she mellowed and actually began looking more like a golden. Like you said, she was incredibly intuitive about how I felt. She was incredibly healthy until just near the end as we celebrated her sweet 16 - an advantage of a mixed breed.
Goldens are definitely the most empathic dogs. She passed 3 years ago and I miss her greatly. She made a huge difference in my life. I also had a golden as a teenager. She was just full of love like yours. They're incredible dogs. The hair is a lot to deal with in the house, but the love is worth frequent vacuuming.

I tried to adopt dogs when my boys were young, but rescue agencies wouldn't let us because my children are both special needs. While that was painful (and I hope things have changed in the last 8 years and rescues are a little more open now to adopting out to humans who might be a little different), it meant that I brought a wonderful golden lab puppy into our lives. Everything you say about Golden Energy is true. It's healing. I love my pups. Lee, please spread the world to rescues, you don't have to be a "perfect" human to be the perfect human for a rescue dog.

When I was little I was absolutely terrified of dogs, I was super sensitive to loud sounds, and really intimated by their high energy. I think I might’ve been tackled by a couple big dogs when I was little too. But, when at my grandmas house, she had a neighbor who had a golden retriever, I’m not sure why, but I just wasn’t as afraid of her, we’d play some in my grandma’s front yard, and I genuinely enjoyed it and liked it. It was the first time I had ever liked and connected with a dog. And was the only for a long time, I’ve always remembered and appreciated her.

I have had 2 retrievers....St Nicholas....born Dec 5....my baby lived to be 13....unfortunately had the hip dysplasia and ended up with cancer....my love started having seizures, scared me to death and broke my heart....not wanting him to suffer, I chose to have him put to sleep which killed me.....holding him through it, I cried and begged his forgiveness asking him to forgive me for it...I still cry and its been13 years....then there was my Hope....she came to me from family who did not have time for her and quite honestly, did not properly care for her. She came to me grossly underweight, I felt so bad....she unfortunately only made it to 8, I believe she had cancer as well....as well as the hip dysplasia.....I miss them both so very much, I think of them all the time, remembering all of the runs, throwing the sticks for joyful and happy returns....SOOOOOOOOOOOOO full of live and loyalty....God bless them both.....until my time comes and I meet ALL of my furr babies who have gone before me....I will pick them up at Rainbow Bridge where they are running free chasing butterflies waiting for me to come get them ALL....LOVE AND PRAYERS FROM MONTICELLO, WI.....LOVE WHAT YOU DO.....PEACE....

Used to walk a golden retriever whose owner and children neglected her. She would come through gaps in the fence and spent as much time as she could with us. Chloe made me laugh so much on our bushwalks because after two hours, she needed a mere half hour of rest before we were off again. She would sit down with her head turned in the opposite direction if on the way home too early, in her opinion, and was immovable! In the end fortunately the owner's father took Chloe to live at his farm and on any visit back to the city, I could see she was evidently thriving on the farm. She was happy.
