  • We head to Livernois Motorsports to install and dyno-test COMP Cams' latest and greatest Hemi valvetrain technology into a modern 6.4L Hemi engine. After installing all of the matched components from the kit, we hit the rollers to see exactly how much the new camshaft and valvetrain components are worth.

    I have a 6.4 as of Saturday. I had a 15 rt 5.7 I did this stage 2 hrt cam install. It would get close to a good tune, powerful, but driving stop sign to stop sign was shit.
    I had it tuned by 2 different people and a dyno tune. Diablo and then HP tuners. It was close at the end. But then it would die at stoplights or in reverse with the break on.
    The sound was amazing, great power, after 25mph drove great.
    Idk if I will do it again.

    Is that possible?

    • @widebody_moparmike
      @widebody_moparmike 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      With these vvt cams your either gonna lock it out completely or limit it , not one I’ve seen is using the vvt fully on a aftermarket cam (the vvt has been out since 09 on the 5.7 and 11 for the 392)

    • @rickgehring7507

      Depends on the total Lift, and 5.7 vs 6.4 , 6.4 uses 132 degree sweep while the 5.7 is 128 , once you get over .610 lift with stock 2.14 valve size , you can't make the valve reliefs deep enough to do it to do it on the 6.4 , the relief cut weakens the top piston. the 5.7(eagle) I think you could go as high as .620 lift but I never tried it on the 5.7(eagle) depending on DIA of the Valves, if you use 2.18 valve in the 6.4 Application , I think .600 lift would be the limit....can't say for sure...I haven't tried it.
      I played around with .605/.605 228/235@.050 .112 LSA in a 6.4 two years ago (spring 2019) , stock 6.4 Bore stroke combo , Manley 598800C pistons and Molnar 6.20 C to C rods. 505 RWHP was the average on the chassis dyno, car was a 2014 Challenger went a best of 11.65@115 weighing in at 4230lbs race weight. at MIR in Maryland.

      Thanks man,
      Thats very interesting.
      Heres a question for ya.
      If you have a good flowing head…. Lets say like an indy sr with max wedge ports like i run….
      If you use a milder cam like a smaller solid flat for decent sharp street manners.
      Does the flow of the good make the engine perform better than the expected “parameters” smaller of the cam?
      Kind of a muddy question I realize.

    • @rickgehring7507
      @rickgehring7507 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sandozman6085 I think it would depend on the CI, when you look at the 09 , 5.7 Vs 08 5.7 it's basically 375HP vs 345 HP , cams were not that different 494vs 484 (if I remember correctly) the power gain came from the extra 20 some odd CFM difference, if we look at the 1970 340 vs the 09 5.7(345ci) , 5.7 cam has higher lift by .060 in and duration @ .050 is almost 30 degrees smaller , intake Port flow is 290/300(depending on source for the 5.7 ) vs 210/220 again source dependent) for the 340. we are talking about 100hp difference on paper , real world might be 70hp the 340 was a bit underrated. this past Nov, I put a set of stock Apache heads on a 266k mile 5.7 and dumped it in to my 04 SLT ram, it went from 270whp(stock 04 heads and intake manifold and OEM cam )to 310whp with the Apache heads, eagle auto intake manifold(with spacers ) added a 6.1 cam(.540"/.528" lift, 208/211@.050) and a Sniper intake it jumped up to 355whp , the following weekend I ran a 13.50 @99(weighing 4750lbs) over at Island raceway....parasitic loss with a 545 trans is typically 82% Driveline loss.

      The only BBM comparison I have would be a 413 ci 361 I built in the early 90s. (4.185 sbc 400 pistons, 6.53 rods and 3.75 440 crank) with a .509 cam (old one) Holley street dominator intake and 800CFM carb. 915 heads 2.14/181 valves ,done by Hughes I think there were 250cfm @ 600. it went a best of 12.20 in a 3200 lbs in a 72 D100, roughly .85HP/Ci WHP slightly better then the stock 5.7 above( .78whp) in 90 I bought a set of Original Indy alum heads( if I remember correctly) 320cfi @ .600 . . Lazzeri told me it was going to fall on it's face.....well a best of 11.45 with that combo, used a 440 Holley intake same carb. (1.03hp/Ci whp same as the above 5.7 with apache heads) .the best that truck ever ran was a 9.81@139mph with a old .654 Mushroom cam those Indy heads with more port work and the Mopar 400 stage 6 intake. 1050 dominator. trans was a A833 18 spline.

      I did. My baseline was 332whp. After longtubes, cai, and stage 2 hrt cam and dyno tune, it made 405whp when it was 100 outside and my air intake temperature was 136.
      Daily driving in town was terrible. After 20 to 25mph it was great and powerful. I got rid of it Saturday because tuning was a pain. Either surged lie crazy at a stop, or tuned it down and it just died all the time. Spent 3 months of getting it tune. I git the 6.4 Saturday.

      @@jibreelpruitt8312 Mine was a 2015 Sublime Green RT 5.7. I had just put the 3.09 diff in 12 days ago brand new from mopar.
      I put a lot into. The 6.4 stock has great power and drives great for daily driving. I will say I feel like my RT was faster at this point. Definitely the torque and throttle response on my RT was amazing.
      I used Hemifever for the first 6 tunes on it. Then I took it to get dyno tuned at Deep Stage Tuning in Norman,Ok. He did a lot better with it on the dyno, but, it was like it would not stay dialed in.
      Last Saturday was by 5th trip to dyno tuner. When I left, ran smooth as silk for 25 miles. I pulled up in the driveway and it just died.
      Drove back up there. He adjusted it again because the timing had dropped to the single digits.
      We drove around for 30 minutes. No issues. Drove home 25 miles away. Great until I pulled into my city and just died at the stoplight. I forgot to mention, once it starts dying at idle speed in Drive or Reverse, you have to gas and break it at the same time. With that torque it was difficult.
      I was fed up and left to a dealership and traded it in.
      I wish I had just stuck with the tune for stock except longtubes like I had for awhile. I have a video on here about the issues and a cold start and warm idle.
