Nice reaction, actually someone understood what this song was about the first time. It is about our beloved Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan who passed away in 2009. He had such a big impact on the songs, he wrote a lot of songs, and had this mastermind, and on top of that was an amazing drummer, and could not only do backing vocals but also lead sing some parts of their songs. I was heartbroken when he was found dead in his apartment.. He had an enlarged heart had much pain, and was told he wouldn’t be alive at the age of 30, he took a brompton cocktail and died by it. The song is dedicated to their friend and original drummer, James Owen "The Reverend Tholomew Plague/The Rev" Sullivan. He passed away at the age of 28 in his home in Huntington Beach, CA on December 28, 2009. The Rev suffered from cardiomegaly (an enlarged heart) and it is believed this was the cause of his death. Also of note, people with that condition typically don't live past 30, and usually live lives avoiding strenuous activity (something The Rev obviously did the opposite of as a metal drummer). In this music video, note that the members all have some kind of tribute to him: - M. Shadows (vocals) has The Rev's Deathbat tattooed on the back of his right hand - Synyster Gates (lead guitar) has "foREVer" tattooed across his chest, and is playing a special, one-off model of his custom guitar that has REV inlays instead of the usual SYN inlays. - Zacky Vengeance (rhythm guitar) has a "foREVer" guitar strap (he also later got "foREVer" tattooed on the left side of his neck in cursive). - Johnny Christ (bass) got The Rev's Deathbat (same as on M. Shadows' hand) tattooed on his chest. And the music video for the title track "Nightmare" was inspired by the movie, Jacob's Ladder, The Rev's favorite movie. Additionally, their next album after Nightmare (Hail to the King) had a tribute song to The Rev titled "St. James."
