@Joshua Fluke , America is a socialist nation for the wealthy and established, in all honesty we have more socialistic operations than most socialistic nations, and we also train people to bash socialism so they can ask for less.
      just some food for thought!

I work for the Texas government. My supervisor likes to scold me for leaving at 5pm every day. Which is the time the day ends. I pick my ass up from my chair and walk out at 5 every day. This bothers her so much. She likes to imply that I am not working as hard as I could. She is also available after hours around the clock and will send emails and work from home in her spare time and act like that is normal. She went on vacation and the whole time she had a work laptop with her to check in with us. It's a sick mentality. I'm 27, the youngest in my office. I'm not going to be a corporate or government shill like the generations before me. Call gen Y and Z lazy, but y'all boomers just mad we ain't nobody's fool.

Sounds like a toxic workaholic boss. I discovered over time in my career if I end up working for one of those to just find another job. It’s only a matter of time before it gets worse. It’s like work is their identity or they have no actual life outside of it so they literally live to work like a religion. It’s sad. If you’re not getting paid by the hour there’s no reason to put in “extra time” or stay later if all your work is done.

After about 20 years working, I'll tell young people you should not have any loyalty to any organization, they will turn on you in a second when its convenient and fire/replace you. Also to ensure no slavery, young people dont get married and dont get a girl pregnant, make sure she takes the birth control pill daily in front of you and both wear protection. You will just condemn your new child to increasing poverty and freedomless slavery and these control/money/job trends worsen. Promote this idea in videos and social media to help prevent more young people into this new slavery.

I once got fired for going to a close relative's funeral. She happened to die at around the same time that I had mentioned that I needed off as early as the interview process, more than six months beforehand, for a wedding. I returned from my unavoidable bereavement + a weekend that was promised to me in the interview only to find that I was fired. Apparently, attending a wedding and a funeral (that was a Thurs - Sunday) was just too long to be away. It was a freaking long weekend. When I left the office Wed evening, I had been unable to contact a client because the client had not answered the phone or email. My boss was upset that she had to contact that client, instead, because I would be gone on Thursday. She wanted me to keep trying to reach the client, unpaid, Wednesday night. I said no. I drew a necessary boundary. I told her I was going to be in an airplane all night and then writing and giving a eulogy and that my phone would be off during the airplane travel, funeral, and wake. I would, therefore, not be able to contact the client during my unpaid bereavement time. Let's also go ahead and add that, as the only close family member who was traveling a long distance, the funeral date had been set for Thursday because that worked best for my boss. That's right. We planned the funeral around my boss' schedule and she fired me anyway.
This lady was a real piece of work. She straight up told me that even though she was only allowed, by law, to verify past employees' employment, she bad-mouthed them to potential employers, anyway. She did it right in front of me, once. She also didn't 'hire' people, but called them 'self-employed.' No benefits. No nothing. And she was a lawyer! She even asked me to serve finger foods at her private parties.
If you're out there, lady, and you're reading this, then you can go straight to hell. Straight. To. Hell. I hope you choke.

I got approached by a recruiter for a large US tech company recently. I work in Europe and get 30 days vacation per year plus public holidays, paid bereavement and sick leave. In the job spec - that they "desperately" needed people for - they had 12 days vacation from day one and put a lot of emphasis on this like it was an amazing forward thinking offer from an up to date player in tech. When I read it (having no idea about vacation policy in the US) I was like "that can't be right, did someone mistype the job spec" I then googled "how much paid vacation time in the US?" and just got the number 0. I couldn't believe it. I can't believe I didn't already know. It's a shame, because America looks like a really cool place to work for a while and meet people. But there's no way I could work that much and not get horribly burnt out and sick. Republicans have slowly but systemically disarmed the country through leveraging capital, rural white fear, and as you would assume in a country with next to no safeguards in place current day, where a company is seen as person, but a special one with even more rights than you, that also controls youre ability to eat and pay rent(and oh yeah you pay rent to one of the corporate scumbags on your companies board that already skims your wages for his cashout, he just then buys up all the property locally and acquires many local rent slaves), of course everyone is depressed and ready for the planet to stop! The American Dream is, and always has been a lie, a tool used by those in power to wring the lower rungs dry and build railroads, skyscrapers, and rock cut outs thousands of feet across of their faces, 5 minutes from said monuments to capitalism and its great powerful white men you will find what appears to be tin house Kenya towns where the only trade is meth, the streets of Detroit, or the state of fucking Oklahoma, its all a lie and we want to die!

My colleagues told my manager what happened and she talked to me as I was leaving. My brother and our dad were both hospitalized the month prior so my employer knew I was experiencing a lot. The company had 2 Bereavement days. At the suggestion of my manager I took short term disability for mental health then long term disability for the same reason. When I returned I was demoted, then the team I was on was all people who had been out due to personal situations like illness, bereavement etc. about 2 months later we were all laid off. I share this to state one thing: we should be able to take the time needed without repercussions. At a different company prior to this one they had 1 Bereavement day that was offered. It was a company that had International employees. One guy said it takes almost 2 days just to fly to his home country, so if someone died in his family he was basically out of luck. It should be standard policy for anyone to get a month of paid vacation.
I know that might lead to scheduling conflicts, but that is why you have managers and HR departments to schedule around vacation.
Employer’s should want to give their employees time off so that employees can enjoy their wealth from working.
If people have more time off they spend more money and find hobbies that give them reasons to work hard so they can get the gear to do the hobby.

When my ex-wife and I were together, she was working as a home health nurse in Georgia (a so-called 'right-to-work' state), and she had to have double carpal tunnel surgery. She got her FMLA approved through her employer, and then on the last day before her leave was to take effect...she was fired. So I gotta say something here. I have had probably about 40 jobs in my life between retail and corporate. Was never able to hold a job down because I was never good at tolerating the grind and being treated like shit. After I had my daughter I had to do something because I knew I can’t just go job to job. So I went and did an apprenticeship in the electrical program to become an electrician. It’s been the best decision I’ve ever made in my life. I get paid well and get treated super well by my boss and team. In my field, no one gives a crap about HR and office politics because we are a bunch of dudes working in the field. We don’t have to have a bubbly personality and pretend we are all family. We know what we are there for. In my field, we fire out bosses and companies if stuff isn’t working for us. I strongly suggest people go and do a trade. I make my own schedule, get all the holidays off, I am well respected and the money is pretty damn good.

I remember about 12 years ago I had to change jobs in Sept and I negotiated 2 weeks vacation with my new employer for Aug of the following year. I got this in writing. Signed by my new manager. July rolls around and I tell them that I'm going on vacation next month. They start going nuts threatening me trying to get me to quit. I go on two weeks vacation and come back. When I came back the director, sales manager and three of the main sales people had quit. I left there two months later. I swear this is a true story! It was for a large national bank and we started from day one with 20 days (4 weeks) pto +10 paid holidays and if a holiday landed on a non-working day, we got a floating holiday. They also encouraged you to use the PTO. After 5 years that went up to 25 days (5 weeks) and after 10 years went up to 30 days. There was some merger and aquisition compromise that took 2 PTO days to replace with holidays so when I left I was at 28 days every year. By "almost european" I mean, both UK and Germany had these benefits enshrined into law as minimums. However, due to competition, nobody gets the minimum vacation time there.
After getting laid off and seeing companies "brag" about a "generous PTO offering" of 3 weeks it was almost sickening.

I remember 1 fortnight where there was public holiday on thursday then next week tuesday and thursday were also public holidays. So take a few days off get 9 days off... Crazy!

Company: "We give you unlimited vacation days"
Me when I quit: "Nice, now give me those unused unlimited days in payout"
    ...*STONKS!* 📈

Why? We weren't going to pay you for unused vacation when it was limited

@@SuprousOxide in the EU the vacation days are a right. If they are not used, you don't lose your rights, thus they are paid out.

@@annekekramer3835 Unfortunately, in most states in the US, that's not the case.

I'm kinda shocked, I didn't know the US has no payed holidays...
I live in Austria, where we have 12 mandatory paid holidays statewide, and in addition at least 25 full days (192,5 hours in my case) that you can take whenever you like...
I really thought I would like to stay like a year or thwo in the US, but now i'm really not sure anymore :/

Joshua Fluke I got it!!! They extended my internship until the end of December :) Only this time instead of QA I will be on the UI team coding in React. They told me there are no entry level jobs but hopefully that will change when they see me hustling. I will apply to other jobs too so by December I believe I’ll have a more secured position
