    Love hearing other views on watches. I got my fathers Submariner after he passed and had no idea the value other than it was a Rolex, come to find it is a very unique vintage red sub writing and meters first 1680 he bought in 1970. After I found out value on it I decided I would keep it safe and only wear it on special occasions but I look forward to the day I can purchase my first new Rolex

    Great Review. It’s The Submariner for me. As a professional pilot AND a recreational diver, I certainly had to give the GMT some consideration, but I’ve always known that when I finally bought my first real watch it would be The Submariner. After 6 months of wearing mine daily I am very happy with it. The simplicity and symmetry of the Sub is perfect. While the GMT and date functions can be valuable to pilots and those crossing time zones, I’ve found it unnecessary with today’s cockpit avionics as I am usually staring at that information on the cockpit displays anyway. That being said, I wouldn’t mind adding a GMT to my small collection one day, but then you can only wear one at a time unfortunately, so maybe I’ll just stick with the Sub.
    You can’t go wrong with either though. Enjoy!!

    • @LumeShot
      @LumeShot  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Never thought about it that way! I guess its just a personal preference. I mean, we all have phones right? In a cockpit with a GMT would just feel nice haha not necessarily but something about it is so cool to me. Thanks for watching!

      Also a commercial pilot and a diver, and I own both, the GMT is great, definitely add one to the collection, that GMT complication is underrated and very useful when on layover. My sub is a vintage 5513 though!

    I love my NoDate, still one before the model change in 2012, and I don"t care if I bang it here or there, as a sports watch it has to be able to deal with that, it is built like a Tank after all , and is one of the few watches that can keep up with my lifestyle, I am a professional diver and I love the outdoors, hiking , hunting, trekking, and my watch does this all.

  • @anthonyb2990
    @anthonyb2990 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Definitely the Submariner, it's my grail watch that I hope to have soon someday. Probably a bit more reliable too because it has less complications. I don't travel that much and I might go diving someday so the Sub wins for me, but if you can afford both that's also awesome!

    I have an early 1970's Submariner. I'm glad it does not have the date function. If the time comes when I don't know what date it is, ... it will be time to pass the watch on to my daughters, and go into "the home" : )

    Good to hear a user centric review rather than the typical technical ones. Would like to hear your thoughts on the Submariner no date vs the updated Explorer I. Trying to decide which one I should get.

    • @LumeShot
      @LumeShot  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! I personally find reviews with first hand experience to be much more in depth and provide more information, real user information, which is important for those who are considering about buying the watch. And even for those who don't plan on buying but want to know what it would be like to own it. The explorer and submariner to my eyes would be similar at initial impression. Both every day watches in my categorization however I would really need to try out the explorer to get a better idea of what feels similar / different than the submariner. Personally, the submariner is my pick of the two based on 1. the aesthetic ( just like the look better ) and 2. the glide lock bracelet. Plus I find the numbers on the explorer slightly unappealing however if you like the look, I don't think you can go wrong with either. The sub will grab more attention however since it is more widely known. Many factors to consider. I'd recommend visiting an AD or any store with both and trying them out. Not just once but every now and then so you can have multiple encounters with the two instead of making conclusions based on one visit and sitting. Cheers!

    Thanks for a very informative video. I find these kind of videos, with personal reflections, more interesting than the usual spec walkthroughs. I actually have owned the 16610LN, 114060, 116610LN, 116710LN and 116710BLNR - now I´m again looking for one of those watches but can´t decide which one to get. The Submariner is a real classic but a bit simple (almost a little boring) and quite heavy. The GMT is a more fun watch and feels lighter on the wrist, but it is a little too dressy with the polished centerlinks. Very hard to decide and the prices are crazy now, so for the time beeing I´m sticking to my Rolex Explorer I which I think is the perfect balance between sporty and dressy.

    great video, well done. perhaps the more even comparison might have been sub date vs gmt, but this is splitting hairs. regarding what wins out of these two, well thats down to the individual. the sub is more suited as a tool watch, whereas the gmt lends itself more towards the dressier piece. they are both highly regarded pieces, you cant go wrong with either. regarding having to reset the gmt after its left for a few days, i find this therapeutic but to each his own, i understand it could be annoying for some. a simple solution is a watch winder.

    • @LumeShot
      @LumeShot  6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I transitioned to a Batman after a new all black GMT with green hour hand... Due to exclusivity on the Batman... The all black GMT was more subtle to wear than the Batman. Then I added an Air King so have a more conservative watch than the Batman... and the watch which appeals to me more than the Batman now is the no date Submariner - since I basically regret dumping the all black GMT for the Batman. Hence all black GMT + Sub is a nice combo... Or sub + air king or all black gmt + air king.

    • @LumeShot
      @LumeShot  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very nicely said! I couldn't have agreed more. The batman is pretty, but I still find beauty in the all black dial and bezels. My GMT Master 2, No date sub and now my new black dial date just with white gold fluted bezel makes a really nice trio to me!

    • @MegaChiefster
      @MegaChiefster 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chief 514 The Batman is kind of like a novelty. It gets old. I myself went from all black to Batman and back to all black. It's just more congruent. Total waste of money transitioning I know but the heart wants what it wants. Now I have this all black gmt and the hulk. And I'm content.

  • @drewsmith6066

  • @cdsmith1990
    @cdsmith1990 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The GMT is my grail watch, preferably in black/blue. I travel a lot, mostly around Europe but also further afield, so the dual time zone function is a big selling point. For the same reason I also like having the date function, although I will admit I have a love/hate feeling about the cyclops, mainly due to how it looks kinda weird when a hand passes through it, which I guess you’d notice more often with the additional hand of the GMT. But I’d definitely take the Sub’s all-brushed strap, with that higher level of adjustability, that’s a great feature.

  • @drhombus242

    I've had both the GMT II and the ND Sub. I sold the GMT and kept the ND. No regrets. I rarely if ever used the GMT functions, which for those who do are great. I always know what the date is, so it's not necessary to have one on my watch. The symmetrical look was the big draw for me. Nice video, btw. Thanks.

    Very good review LS. The Submariner's GlideLock is awesome in practicality. One used it's hard to live without. The GMT IIs 24 location bezel just turned out to be less useful than the Sub's 120 for my daily wear. Sub's lume pip on the bezel is also a useful plus. Both nice watches and if you are a pilot who travels through multiple timezones regularly, the GMT II is superior.

    • @LumeShot

      Chili Prepper To the contrary, I feel that the ball bearing click on the gmt is much more refined than the sub's spring click. It's actually a technological upgrade. You could find spring clicks on any lower end watches. Tag, Victorinox, etc. But I've never come across any other watch that uses ball bearing like the gmt.

    Nice video! Looking at the condition of them , you definitely look after them, you say that you don’t baby them, but you do compared to most. I’m not such a fan of the polished centre links. With regard to the Submariner having the best clasp, have you seen the Tudor Pelagos one? Like the Subbie it has huge adjustment so it can go over a wetsuit covered arm, it also has a setting that expands automatically with the flexing and expansion of your wrist. Keep up the good work....jealous of your watch choice!

    Having a bezel that has minute marks in the first quadrant but not on the second quadrant obviously makes it not symmetrical so stop using the term incorrectly

    • @LumeShot
      @LumeShot  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Referencing the dial's symmetry throughout the video. Clearly the bezel insert itself isn't symmetrical.

    I wouldn't call it an aviation piece...it's a watch for travelers (or the traveling executive). Not sure why you'd call it an aviation other than it might be a watch worn by pilots so they can remember the time in their home country?
