    SCSI! Yes I bought the Compaq Proliant DL580 server for 25 euro! It is a beast of a 4 cpu xeon server with 4 scsi bays!

      Sadly only electrical power. I'm pretty sure my slow fanless home server Dell Wyse 3290 from 2014 with dual core Celeron N2807, 256G SSD and 8GB of RAM would tear it apart in terms of computational performance, ram and disk speed no matter what.

    I have some serwerworks based retro servers. I confirm they are rock solid with no memory size limits like intel did :) I maxed out IBM xSeries x232 with 4x1GB SDRAM, with two 1.4 GHz PIII and 6x 300GB drives and xSeries x235 with 6x2GB DDR SDRAM (that is perfectly usable with 32-bit windows server!) and also 6x 300GB drives. My ML330g2 has only four 512MB sticks tho. Never had huge rack to have rackmount versions of servers... Only rackmount DL360 g2 is lying in a room corner, sad, without top cover and without CPUs. That DL580 is true monster :)

    • @madyogi6164
      @madyogi6164 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The problem with all that old equipment is that it eats way too much power, compared to all the modern, miniaturized stuff. Many small offices were left with 32 bit machines, motherboards, ram modules, SCSI controllers, hard drives, 100 Mbps LAN cards, modems and other crap from 20xx era. Very often it does work, but is just too weak to execute any sort of modern software. Nobody will buy it and considering electro-waste - it's bad to dump it.

    • @swrzesinski
      @swrzesinski 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@madyogi6164 Yeah, thats true, but they are rare machines that were mostly scrapped. Trying to find working DL580? Good luck. They are perfect for playing around and having it in collection - but they take a lot of space too. Powering both x232 and x235 on same 1000VA (670W) UPS, took 5 IEC power cables and overloaded it almost instantly :D For daily server/NAS I'm using custom server with old beige supermicro towe case ~2005 with 7 SATA hotplug bays and ~2011 X9SCA-F mainboard with Ivy Bridge xeon. It consumes power... next to nothing. It's my primary storage server, that I can accept running 24/7.

    Crazy amount of computation for the time with 4x PIII xeons. I like the easily removable pci card system with the trapdoor.
    I recently won a dual socket A motherboard, a Tyan S2466, for cheap with a saved ebay search i had for years on dual socket A. Came with 2x Athlon MP 2000+, coolers, io shield and 1.5gb of ecc ram at 2.5 timings (i could upgrade it but no point just now). I actually had another Tyan dual socket A board for a few years but no CPUs as Athlon MP is for me rare to find or very expensive. However, i recently found out that MPs are just XPs that are validated (no core differences), most boards can actually run with Athlon XPs! Wish i knew that before!
    Problem is i got fed up waiting for Athlon MPs to show up that i bought an MSI K7N2 Delta that has nforce 2 400 chipset; it can do 400mhz fsb, dual channel memory, sata, onboard lan chipset... I know the single socket MSI will be faster in games but for SMP enabled programs the Tyan will be faster and it's also just a bit more unique. So idk what to build 😅
    Tbh I recommend pentium iii slot 1 for fast voodoo video cards or Athon 64; beyond that your better with current hardware imo. Although i have a k6iii+ as my main retro rig, I don't recommend them now as they're expensive and piii slot 1 is just faster but you can disable cache and that on k6iii+ for dos which makes it a good AIO system.

    I would have the DL580 in my collection. But it was too loud, too heavy and too big for me. So I had to give the device away. Nobody in my family tolerated this noise, especially since you can't work with it either. And I simply don't have room for such a mega tank. Otherwise, great device, the best you could get back then. Unfortunately no AGP slot 😁 but it's good for that it's a server and not a gaming PC.
