- Hello and welcome to my channel. This DIY channel is dedicated to the Overlanding Build of my 3rd Gen 2016-2021 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro. I hope you follow me through the entire build experience and I hope that somewhere along the way, I can help you in some level - and that we can learn from each other. Please be a Tacoma-buddy and hit the subscribe and notification bell buttons, cheers!
You've heard about pick-up truck tailgates being stolen. To deter an alleviate this, here's a short video tutorial on how to install an inexpensive tailgate lock on a 2019 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro (3rd Gen Tacoma) to deter thieves from driving away with your tailgate.
TIP (by one of my viewers @Grove Tucky) as some people are having a lot of trouble removing the T40 screws: It's easier to remove the factory bolt if you remove the tailgate. Just unhook the cable, open the tailgate to about 45 degrees and lift. Rest it on a towel on your bumper. Hit the bolt 3 or 4 times with a punch. Removal of some of the corner seam sealant using a blade maybe required (as it maybe too thick for the lock bracket to fit).
To purchase this (and shout out to Christian06 of TacomaWorld.com!):
1. Become a member on Tacomaworld.com (create a user profile)
2. Send money PayPal: bugdoctorchris@hotmail.com
3. In the notes, provide:
your name
shipping address
your Tacoma generation
your TacomaWorld username
Price: 3rd gens are US$25, T45 tamper proof screw US$3.50 (optional)
I hope you find this helpful, please hit the subscribe and like buttons.
Thanks and until the next video!

I just installed mine yesterday and wanted to add a couple of pieces of advice. It's easier to remove the factory bolt if you remove the tailgate. Just unhook the cable, open the tailgate to about 45 deg. and lift. Rest it on a towel on your bumper. Some people are having a lot of trouble removing the Torx bolt. Take a punch and hit the bolt 3 or 4 times helps. I had to remove some of the seam sealant from the corner. It was just too thick for the bracket to fit. I used a razor blade to shave it off. Upon installation, I used a 5/16" wrench to turn the tamper-proof Torx that I bought with the kit. I hope this helps. Great video by the way.
this is great input @Grove Tucky! I'll update the video description with this. I appreciate it and thanks for tuning in!
This helped - I’m having trouble removing it too
did you just punch it in the middle?
Yes. Don’t be afraid to hit it. The idea is to loosen any “bond” it may have.
Never thought that thugs would steal Taco tailgate, I’m getting one for mine.
Thanks for video
Better safe than sorry my friend... thanks for tuning in Keith!
I bought one and it’s fantastic! Thanks Chris06 (Tacoma World)
Great to hear! Thanks for tuning in 61espo!
Do you have a link were you could order it from
@@randy656 please read the video description. Instructions on how to buy it is there.
Thanks for your help .
You're very welcome Jorge, I'm glad this was helpful. Thanks for tuning in!
Great video
Does this rub on any of the painted surfaces and cause premature rust?
Hi SirEddie, no rubbing. No signs of rust so far.
I can’t get the factory torx screw out! Any suggestions?
Hi H M, sorry, I thought I responded to you already and my comment maybe a moot point now but at any rate, yes it is a challenge to remove that screw out. I had to assemble a tool using a small ratcheting wrench, a bit extender and a T40 bit (see 1:15 mark in video) to loosen it up you can grab and turn it by using a pair of pliers to further loosen and remove it fully.
Will it work on a 2015 tundra?
I would assume that the Tundra would require a bigger bracket and position would be different.
Does anyone know if they make these same parts but for a ford f150? 2018
I don’t think so but a few other options like a cylinder type comes up when you search up “ford f150 tailgate anti theft lock” on google
I stripped the screw 😩 anyone have a suggestion on how to take it out?
Sorry to hear this unfortunate situation m4300zx that but thanks for sharing your experience!
Why didn't you use the security screw which was provided with the bracket? It makes removing the screw much more difficult for a bad guy.
I actually didn't get a security screw.
Oh, I think it was optional. I almost stripped the OEM screw when removing it. It was on there super tight.. Thanks
Watching him remove the original screw it doesn't appear that a "security" screw would be necessary. 😅
Anyone can buy the bit for that security screw, it is a common bit you can buy online or off any tool truck. You might even be able to buy one at Harbor Freight.
How do I order one, I’m working off an I pad and I don’t see a link for it
Hi James, there's no link, it's a set of instructions and it's in the video description but here it is again:

Having said this, I do not know the current availability of the product but contact Chris first and he should respond. Good luck and thanks for tuning in!
Thanks I tried to get one but no luck but I just made one with some flat steel , thanks
This is some guy making these on his own, they are not secure at all, just like he put it on it can be removed even faster because the screw has now been removed once. This is not a good product and it is quickly and easily defeated with the bit that is readily available to anyone.
Do you have to remove the silicon seals to fit this underneath?
No seals were removed. The only thing that was "removed" during the install was the T45 screw but was reused eventually.
@@modXELA ahhh thanks! The one Chris sent me doesn’t fit at all, I was thinking to remove the seal then push it in
@@iamalemontree you sure he sent you the correct one? He has both the 2nd and 3rd gen versions. Mine was a direct fit.
@@modXELA yeah it’s weird I told him on PayPal that it’s 3rd Gen as well. It doesn’t even go in lol
@@iamalemontree I would double check with him in case he sent you the 2nd Gen version inadvertently. He's very helpful.
where can people get that bracket lock.
Hi Zoov, you need to contact Christian06 of TacomaWorld.com. Read the video description, I posted how to get a hold of him. I'm not sure if he has any in stock but you can try.
Do you install left side or is one good enough.
@@philipjones5364 one is good enough and besides, I have not seen a bracket for the left side similar to this.

Hi. Is Christian still selling those?
Hi gemini610, sorry I do not know but please message him directly.
I found him. Yes he is still selling. Thanks.
@@geminij610 Nice. So not sure if you've read one of the comments and it's a good suggestion... to make it easier to remove the bolt/screw, remove the entire tailgate first. It is a little tight in there and some have managed to shred the bolt head and that's an ugly situation to be in. Good luck!
Where can I get it?

Is there one available for tundras?
Both screws stripped now I got to use an extractor
Sorry to hear that but thanks for sharing your experience Ghost Shura!
I don't see how this would deter theft... just unscrew it and remove the tailgate
Don't know if he is still selling them . I sent 25 dollars with all my info and It was 2 days ago . No email or message at Tacoma world website.
Hey mrgallardo I hope that he contacts you soon. He is pretty responsive, so I hope he connects with you soon. Good luck!

I can’t get the factory torx screw out! Any suggestions?
Yes it's a little tricky especially if you don't have the proper tool as it is pretty tight in there. Just follow the setup that I did using a small ratchet with a bit adapter for the T40 bit. Loosen the bolt just enough until you can use a pair of pliers to slowly rotate the bolt head until it's out.
Yes buy the far better and yes more expensive SaBellCo tailgate lock, this product being shown in the video is not secure at all, it can be removed by just removing the screw and for those who jump in with he supplies a security torx screw, anyone can purchase a security torx bit. You can defeat this product in a matter of seconds. It is a waste of money and provides no security for your tailgate!
I stripped the screw 😩 anyone have a suggestion on how to take it out?
Hey sorry to hear your unfortunate situation m4300zx but you're in a tough position due ti the location if the bolt. You'll have to try a screw extractor or maybe give it some patience using a vice grip. Good luck and I hope everything works out for you.
