  • Nearly 20 years ago, Robert Zemeckis brought us a story starring Tom Hanks about a man trapped on an island, and the change it would have on him and his life. Here's my review for CAST AWAY!

One of my favorite parts of Cast Away is that moment when that ship comes into view right behind him and the very next scene where Helen Hunt's character is getting the phone call. Those parts are so damn effective because it's such a shock when they happen. And the shock isn't just the fact that he's rescued or the fact that we now know that Helen Hunt's character was remarried and had children. No, the shock comes from being so immersed into that life of being stranded on that island with Tom Hanks living such a primitive lifestyle.....to suddenly see something as modern as that huge ship and then seeing a kitchen w/electricity and a telephone and normal clothing.....etc I would imagine that we're getting the same feeling that Tom Hanks character must of felt suddenly having all that right back in his life, even if its only a fraction of that . It's a massive culture shock.

My favourite quote from the film: "Keep breathing, because tomorrow the sun will rise. Who knows what the tide could bring?"
That line echoed in my mind at the end of the film, Chuck practically had to restart his life which most people couldn't cope with, but if you picture what the future could bring then you've got something to live for. I think this film is especially important during this hell of a year (for me at least) because as bleak as things can get, if you hold out, the sun will rise again and you never know what opportunities it'll bring.

One of the most rewatchable movies of all time.
    Things I love:
    1. very little musical score. It feels so natural.
    2. simple story but the details about survival is so compelling.
    3. tom hanks making things interesting even without dialogue.
    4. emotional gravity on nonliving things: Wilson and the Fed ex box.
    5. it inspired me to maroon myself in an island in 2008 and walk on the beach wearing only my undies.

Thing I love about Cast Away is specifically how Tom Hanks' character deals with isolation - that is to say, the creation of Wilson. That idea that we, as people, are hardwired to need other people to the point that we'll essentially create them if none are around for long enough is a very primal, fascinating, and deeply emotional thought to me.

I was stationed in Okinawa for two years and had just transferred back to the US when this movie came out. I never felt so homesick and alone and all I wanted was to leave the island and come home. This was years before social media, before smart phones, where you had to make an appointment at the base internet lounge just to write an email. A phone call home was .89 cents a minute, something done only once or twice a month. At the time Okinawa had only one internet data line, and when a passing ship accidentally damaged it, the entire island was offline for a few months. Those two years were the loneliest period of my life, but when I left I was a different person. A "veteran" so to speak. Then I saw this movie and I connected with it in ways I never thought a film could do. To this day it's easily in my Top 10, and has more meaning to me than almost any other film I've seen. And I still can't believe Tom Hanks didn't get the Oscar that year! I mean, I love Gladiator, but come on, there was no contest. Great review, Cast Away is indeed awesometacular.

I truly, deeply love this movie and my favorite part is the monologue he gives near the end. Specifically: "I had power over nothing. And that’s when this feeling came over me like a warm blanket. I knew, somehow, that I had to stay alive. Somehow. I had to keep breathing. Even though there was no reason to hope. And all my logic said that I would never see this place again. So that’s what I did. I stayed alive. I kept breathing. And one day my logic was proven all wrong because the tide came in, and gave me a sail. And now, here I am. I’m back. In Memphis, talking to you. I have ice in my glass… And I’ve lost her all over again. I’m so sad that I don’t have Kelly. But I’m so grateful that she was with me on that island. And I know what I have to do now. I gotta keep breathing. Because tomorrow the sun will rise. Who knows what the tide could bring?
    "
It's an incredible metaphor for depression and trying to survive it.

I just watched this movie Cast Away last night on Netflix. It was recommended to me by my uncle. I must say that cast away is a very wild and perfectly executed movie. This movie shows that anything can happen in life. It also shows how the main character adapts to the situation. It also shows how he has almost become mad by taking to a ball who he names wilson. I have given this movie 8 stars out of 10 on IMDB. It’s a must watch movie especially during lockdown times. I was thinking that in the last he would get reunited with Kelly but it does not happen which is something I personally did not like 👍. Watch this movie to watch something different. The island which this movie was filmed belong to the country Fiji 🇫🇯. I find this movie very similar to a novel I read while I was studying in fifth grade. The name of that novel was Robinson Crusoe written by Daniel Defoe.

It came out in my final year of university and my girlfriend at the time turned to me as we walked out of the theater and she could see the smile on my face, she said "you loved that didn't you" Yes absolutely......"I hated it" she said......she's long gone........the fact there's no musical score the entire time on the island and it only kicks back in as he looks back on the island after making it across the reef when he finally escapes is brilliant. And Tom hanks turns to him and says. I'm sorry i wasnt there for you. Just so perfect. The selflessness at that point to give condolences even tho he physically cud never have been there. Also loved the scene where hanks drives helen hunts character back home becus he knows shes moved on and he can't hold her back anymore, again selflessness.

Stranded on an island piece of media. Been rewatching Lost lately. Knowing where it leads, I still enjoy the journey so very much and some of the "unsolved mysteries" i am finding myself putting the pieces together whether the show-runners intended it that way or not. I love that show.

This movie is very spiritual. I wouldn't say religious undertone, because it doesn't come across that way. Rather, it is a great journey from beginning to end. A character who is completely cleansed of all his demons.
For instance, Wilson is his only connection to reality as Jeremy stated. A 'person' he can have a conversation with. He relies so heavily on that dialogue as a character that he cannot escape the island. He is never able to let go. In the final scenes, when Wilson is lost to sea, it is not a decision that the main character makes. It happens on it's own. He briefly swims after Wilson, but ultimately decides to let go. It is in the moment, that he has finally gotten rid of his past, that consumed him. They very thing that got him lost to being with. He is finally able to be saved in the next scene.

    • @lytnin88

If it's spiritual, it's because we are spiritual creatures. Which we are. But this movie, I thought, was very secular. Not very spiritual.

      @horaciocapanelli-soto4710 ปีที่แล้ว
