    It's still hard to believe there was a time when people hated Wind Waker and Pokemon Gen 5. I loved those games before it was cool, and I'm glad they finally get the appreciation they deserve.
    As for a potential future topic, I suggest Games Hated By Their Creators.

    I feel like people forget how bad Wind Waker's reveal trailer really is. It doesn't show the ocean. It doesn't show much of the unique aspects of the gameplay. It's literally all about the cartoony tone. I probably would have been upset at that time if I saw that trailer too.

      I see what you mean but even if that wasn’t the case I wouldn’t put it past some people looking past that still hate on just from how it looks. I guess some people wanted it to look more like the 64 games at the time?

    • @garfreeek
      @garfreeek 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Don't forget that it was hated for more than the artstyle:
      *it's fully linear.
      *it had 5 to 6 dungeons and a lot of filler content (they didn't have time for the third pearl dungeon, and you can feel it! )
      *those dungeons were suddenly a lot easier (watch boss keys to understand why. But basically it's because they were more linear and we had already played two Zelda games so for better at the puzzles! )
      It's only years later, after we got the game we wanted in twilight princess. And you see how beautifull the artstyle has stood the test of time. That everyone started to live it again!

      @@Santoryu90 After the 64 games, people saw the tech demo and were excited to see the N64 visuals given a boost with the GameCube.
      Windwaker's visuals are so drastically different, people had a knee jerk reaction to it, which lead to people hating it/being upset.

      But then he ends up frozen in space, alone and with his sins staining his reputation forever.
      Translated: The game was *STILL* shit for so long, and was filled with endless lies. Even though it made a "miraculous recovery", countless people will still refuse to buy or support the company who made it, due to all the shit in the original version.
      We need to *stop rewarding people for cleaning up their act, AGES after they were meant to have a decent game out in the first place.*
      All rewarding them does, is show the industry we will tolerate any abuse, as long as they make up for it...

    • @skrtreynolds
      @skrtreynolds 4 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Super Game Master What you’re missing is that devs take the abuse anyways. Hello Games wasn’t a AAA level studio, so they actually did something or else they would’ve gone bankrupt. Yeah they just did what they were supposed to but it was the way they went about it that actually made it respectable. They didn’t go on Twitter every day and say “hey yeah it sucks now but we’re gonna make it better we swear” and make more empty lies, they stopped any updates about it and just did their shit and made the game pretty solid. Not entiiiirely their fault if you still don’t find the game adequate.

    Gen 5 was attacked because a lot of people where at their "I'm too old for a kids game like Pokemon and if I don't hate on it everyone around me will think I'm lame" phase. Either that or they where burned out by the initial release of Gen 4 and didn't play Platinum or HG/SS to get themselves back on the Pokemon train.

    An interesting list would be “best games that only received fan translations” basically games that never got ported so fans did the work to make the playable

    • @toumabyakuya3498
      @toumabyakuya3498 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Here are some suggestions:
      - Gyakuten Kenji 2: It was beautifully translated and seems even official. Thanks to this a lot of fans of the Ace Attorney franchise could actually play through one of (if not the best) stories Ace Attorney has ever had.
      - Dai Gyakuten Saiban 1: (Yeah, am a big Ace Attorney fan) This one is actually a crossover with the fricking Sherlock Holmes! It has an amazing story, very well crafted characters and a great mystery to discover. Its sequel is being translated at the moment by the same group and chapters 1 & 2 are already available on the 3DS.
      - Danganronpa 1: Yeah, believe it or not, this one had a fan-translation. The fact the fan-translation existed is what prompted an official translation to begin with.
      - Mother 3: I mean, do I really need to explain why?.
      - Any Super Robot Wars game: Seeing how licensing the game is such a nightmare for the development team (because this is a Massive Crossover franchise between a lot of Mecha anime and the rights overseas, unlike in Japan, are all basically spread all over the world) and they have very little money to make the games to begin with, they basically cannot localize the franchise. So a lot of fans have stepped up to translate the games themselves to varying success. The ones that come to mind with expertly made fan-translations are: Judgement, A Portable and Original Generation Saga: Endless Frontier Exceed.
      This fan-translations also told Konami that a want for this franchise over-seas does exist, ergo, since Moon Dwellers they have used a loophole of translating the game to English and then selling it in South Korea so westerners can import it from pages like PlayAsia.

      ...ehh, I don't think so. I remember that people had been begging for the more "realistic" art style, but I never thought about it as a replacement for WW. Most of that comes down to toon link just continuing to be used across the franchise as well as the twilight princess design. I was like "yeah these can co-exist, this is cool."

      @@UltimatePhantasm As someone who has played both Unleashed (Wii version) and Colors and loves Unleashed more and has always done so, it has almost everything to do with the controls. Colors controls feel more slippery, like you tap the control stick and Sonic flies in that direction in a way I find frustrating to control, whereas Unleashed, while maybe overly stiff, feels a bit better since it's more about trying to maintain your momentum and when you get going, it's easier to keep going. It's also part of why I liked Generations more than Colors, it had a more Unleashed style control scheme. Also being able to use quick-step and drift at any point, not just when the game says you can.
      As for the werehog, I'm not going to defend that. I have a soft spot for it and personally do still like it, partially because I like 3D platforming generally with exploring and the combat, while not great, I find rewarding enough (at least when it's a giant brawl instead of tons of small encounters every 5 feet) but it's still the less fun half and those stages are ridiculously long and frequent.
      Oh, and Unleashed has in my opinion, the best music of the franchise.

    Some of my honorable mentions:
    I don’t think Twilight Princess was as hated as Wind Waker, but I do distinctly remember people not liking it, while nowadays it’s generally seen as better than (even if not as important to gaming history as) OoT. Skyward Sword is also getting a little more credit, which is nice.
    People maligned Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies when it came out, and the sentiment I see now is that it does deserve a spot in the series even if it’s one of the weaker games.
    Super Paper Mario was a similar situation to New Vegas. It wasn’t what anyone expected or wanted, but then Sticker Star came out and forced everyone to acknowledge it as a solid game.

      I'm pretty sure Skyward sword is more hated now than in 2012. If I have to guess it would be because of underwhelming graphics, motion controls everywhere, the lack of auto-target in the bow and slingshot, being excessively linear, the tedious crafting system, giving you more questions than answers in the plot, among others.

    • @nanowasabi4421

      I haven’t been in many discussions about Skyward Sword since BotW came out, so it’s possible that that made people more aware of Skyward Sword’s flaws, but part of your reply just sounds like personal animus. I’ve never heard anyone complain about the crafting system, and most people I’ve talked to consider the story to be one of Zelda’s best. Linearity is a matter of preference. Of course the motion controls could have been better, and while I find Fi’s character likable, she’s terrible from a gameplay perspective, but I see Skyward Sword compared favorably with both Wind Waker and Twilight Princess much more now than I did right after it came out, even if few people will claim it’s the best Zelda game.

      I never hated WW for its look. I hated it because of the tingle maps+ the grasping arm not working, the sailing being either boring lines or constantly shifting the wind, and the lack of temples, which they replaced with idiotic Tingle maps that you needed a giant's wallet to actually buy, and grind rupess to buy the maps with.
      Every time someone finds out I dislike WW I get the "It's because its cartoony isn't it?" line. No mike. it's because I needed to tediously grind for a giant wallet, then tediously grind rupees to save the world because a creeper midget is holding the maps hostage.

      So in short, Wind Waker wants to be a big open sandbox, but shoehorns a linear story in. The Tingle Chart costs are designed to bridge these two sides of the game by encouraging the player to explore until they have enough rupees. Basically, sidequesting progresses the plot. But because you gradually get abilities over the course of the story and there's obstacles necessitating them everywhere you're discouraged from exploring until you have just about all of them. So you're stuck either constantly running into more roadblocks than you can keep track of or cramming in all your exploring at the end of the game. That's why Breath of the Wild gives you all of your abilities from the start. Wind Waker HD fixes almost all of your grievances and most of the changes are good, but the changes it makes to the Triforce shard quest just replace one issue with another, because it's a symptom of a bigger problem and not the root cause.

This is why I get annoyed when people say Smash ignores the work of small Indie studios, because if you actually look up the history of certain character's games you'd realize they did come from small indie studios. The problem is once a Series reaches the sales,popularity and legacy that makes Nintendo consider them as DLC for Smash, people stop seeing that series as an Indie game. Either the original Studio uses the success to expand or the Series gets bought up by a larger company.

I think the last time I pre-ordered was Pokemon Alpha Sapphire, and when Splatoon and Pokemon Sun & Moon came out on their launch days, I just walked into Best Buy / Gamestop to buy a copy THAT DAY because there were still so many copies left. Now, if devs are going to offer incomplete games from the start, what's the rush?

    While the marketing dug a hole for No Man's Sky, I gotta commend Hello Games for sticking with it and shooting up out of that hole instead of taking the money and running

    I love Gen 5. The new Pokémon were balanced across all types and it introduced probably one the best pseudo-rivals ever created in N.

    How about doing the reverse of this? games that were popular but are now...less so, such as Bioshock Infinite and Overwatch

      People don’t like Bioshock Infinite? I’ve personally never played it but I thought it was a really popular game

      @@Cinko420 Since WHEN was Colours hated?! From what I can tell, people still praise it as one of the best Modern Sonic games, if not *the* best one.

    Mine crafts return in popularity is probably helped by the Vannoss crew and their antics.

    What's the name of the song at the end? I've heard it many times in other videos, but I can't remember the name. Any help?

    Would have put Star Wars Battlefront II on here but that's personal bias to a huge extend. Otherwise a great list. Gen 5 always competes with the Gen 2 remakes as my favourite games in the series

    Had to watch the first two minutes a second time because I was so distracted by the NieR:Automata soundtrack playing in the background. Goddam I love that OST.
    In that vein, do best game soundtracks from games you probably didn't play. To which I'd recommend number 1 be Gitaroo Man. >:3

    I loved the Wind Waker and I remember all the hate it got. It has aged way better than most games at that time.
