Are you gonna do a spoilered review? Honestly, I am just waiting for your *clang clang* imitation :D
daniel have u thought about reviewing subscriber short stories? i personally am writing a short story and I know that a lot of other goblins are writing there own stories and it would be so cool to get ur feedback in a video
He is the protagonist in his mind though...
After Red God, I’d love to see a long spoiler-filled discussion of the series as a whole
I couldn’t agree more my good man
I love that Lightbringer, world jumping operatic war drama, had a Tom and Jerry scene where a “mouse in the walls” is lured with a cartoon ham. Brilliant
Just when you think Lysander was gonna redeem himself he done f’d it up big time. I HATE him with a passion 😭
Yesss, I never liked the fact that we got him as POV and always distrusted him.
**WARNING MILD SPOILERS**
When the meeting happens I thought "oh this is why Pierce was giving us his POV, he planned for Lysander to redeem himself by truly being a reformist somehow, allying himself with Darrow etc". But when his true colors showed I knew there was a reason I never liked him. That little greedy and entitled piece of scum
Pierce did a great job of deceiving us into thinking that he had a chance of redemption. I think we all knew deep down where the wind was blowing though.
He is a loon after all smh
The goblin has RETURNED!
Spoilers
Just feel like I have to say this but, Apollonius is such a good 'villain'. Among a bunch of snake villains with their scheming it's neat to see this straight forward and charismatic leader who'd even help Darrow recover for a duel.
Also just really loved Diomedes. I was mildly disappointed that we didn't get to see him much in dark age and thought he'd end up just another honorable soldier that brings mild conflict to Lysander. His character really got to shine through though
Apollonius is so great because he's not interested in cheap tricks, he's not inundated by fascist Gold ideology, he's just pure self-belief. He believes he can be the best and beat anyone on equal terms and he doesn't care what that person represents. He only wants a fair fight and if he loses, so be it.
Actually no it's not that he doesn't share Gold's ideology of superiority, it's just that he thinks he can actually prove he's better on an even playing field. All other supremacists, whether in real life or in this book, don't care if it's a fair fight or not. Anything that reinforces their belief is good no matter how it happens.
I really loved the character work of Darrow in this book. I wasn't sure how PB would handle the evolution but he definitely stuck the landing in my eyes. The last 50 pages hit like a heavyweight punch to the gut and now I can't wait to see how he ties a bow on this series. Red God can't come fast enough!!!
I love seeing reviews on this channel, I get that the algorithm doesn't favor them as much so you don't post quite as many as you used to, but I still really enjoy watching them
Yeah I totally understand turning away from it cuz of the Algorithm but boy do I like the reviews... Daniel's reviews are what got me into fantasy!
Loving the Lysander hate😂 That self-righteous, smug, self-important pixie has fooled me twice now. It will not happen again🤬
He never fooled me that little shit 😂
Amazing job by Pierce the way he wrote Lysander to show his true colors
The way others talked about his honor and the way he saw himself as fighting for something bigger never seemed to match his essentially selfish actions. Overall great writing of the character that his “turn” seemed to me completely believable.
@@aflameinthevoid8047 I also love how Darrow saw it the moment it happened he understood. He was willing to break bread which shows Darrow'z growth. But when Darrow realizes what's about to go down I love he is the one telling Diomedes and the reader.
Definitely the best book in the second arc. Yeah, I hope the super weapon has a twist that it doesn't work because the colors have evolved so much since its invention.
Or it works because of their Sigils. Meaning anyone without them is safe.
I think Lysander is gonna fumble and let it fall into the Jackal clone’s hands
@@coryascott same, the fact that the jackal has been wayyy to quiet
I am sooooo happy to finally have a new Red Rising book. Thank you for reviewing this!
Light Bringer is everything I could want in a penultimate installment. Our main characters reaching their limits, setting up for a hyped finish!
Great to see another review from you - especially so because this book is amazing!
This was an incredible book and I’ve really enjoyed watching Pierce Brown’s writing evolve and improve with each new entry
Impeccable timing as I just finished light bringer this morning and I am sobbing
SPOILERS
Personally, the reason I usually dislike big super weapons in stories is because I know they're not actually going to use it, like James Bond isn't gonna let the bad guy nuke the world. But in red rising, they've already killed so many people on Mercury alone that I believe the threat
I think it’s gonna end up falling into the Jackal’s hands and I think he’s absolutely willing to use it
@@coryascott Is there even a need for that? We know that Lysander is willing to do *anything* on his path to the throne so purging a planet color by color no longer seems impossible for him.
@@floriandolder8111 he’s shown just enough remorse so far that I think he wouldn’t have the stones to take that final step. The Jackal has shown that he has no boundaries whatsoever
Loved this one - certainly some interesting pacing choices but I feel confident that events are really lining up for a fantastic conclusion in Red God.
I'm in love with this book. I must be in the minority, but I LOVE Lysander's character and his ideas and struggles. It's so interesting and is a great counter half to Darrow in my opinion.
Im all in there with you. The perfect villain.
Lysander is one of the most interesting villians I have ever read. His character is just such an interesting counter to Darrow. The fact that people HATE him so much is just a triumph of writing. Also the fact that he openly stated that Sevro scares the shit out of him makes me so happy haha
I was Genuinely shattered when he did what he did. I really liked his character arc a reading what he does in the end broke me a bit.
out of every character he has the biggest claim to the throne but he went about it we gut wrenching.
Completely agree. You need a good villain, that has understandable goals. It's why killmonger was the best marvel villain. It's why Jaime and cersei Lannister were amazing . You fucking hate them, but you understand them. And it's going to be all that much sweeter when they get Justice
After this book I can formerly say that: Fuck Lysander
my heart died with cassius. he was the true lightbringer.. after all the heartbreak and adversity hes gone through, he learned to let go of his hate and vengeance and always did the right thing and instilled honor and humanity in those he taught... I hope Lysander SUFFERS a slow and emotionally painful end by those he trusts most when victory is within his grasp.
Cassius Bellona's honor remains.
spoilers bestie, this is a spoiler free review
Love your reviews man. It's not an exaggeration when I say they got me into fantasy and reading as a whole.
I love listening to you, more than anyone else, talk about books that I lov.
the best book ever! I think it's better than the Golden Son. I haven't finished it yet. But dudee... Never been so anxious and excited with a novel this far!
Love seeing book reviews on here. I have Red Rising on my TBR once I complete Malazan.
Another quality REVIEW. Thank you Daniel :)
This book broke me …. 💔 an absolute masterpiece imo
Happy to support Daniel's book reviews!
Light Bringer as opposed to lightbringer by Brent Weeks which is also opposed to lightbringer by linkara
@DanielGreeneReviews Thanks again for recommending the Red Rising series. I started on your recommendation and I am loving it.
I thought Light Binger was good. With Lysander PB does that marvellous thing where he lets the antagonist be the hero in the story of their life, and leaves it up to us to see how f-ed up he is. I truly appreciate PB's ability to write characters, how he lets them speak and grow and change, all the while being very clear with how the reaction of the character leads to the actions taken. I thought the plot with the daughters was a little too convenient but still rewarding. C's death was expected, it was sad and infuriating but at least I still have Lyria and Diomedes (I'm that person who loves the side characters who usually have terrible things happen to them, RIP Ephraim).
Dark age shocked me with its brutality and kill count. It feels like no one is safe and you nearly become numb to characters you love dying.
Light bringer's tone is more hopeful and less brutal. It's filled with great character development and some genuinely funny moments. Only for him to remind you, yes, it does still hurt when your favorite characters die.
9.8/10 Never again. Seeking financial compensation from Pierce Brown for my therapy bill. Already pre-ordered Red God.
Nice
I will start listen to the whole red rising audiobooks soon
Congratulations for 500k Daniel, my Goblin Overlord!!! 👺
Awesome to see you doing a review. Thanks.
Great book! I liked it a lot and it has some of the best fight scenes in the series. The only downside is it shrunk the world and villains down into familiar territory, but hopefully there are a few surprises left
My ranking: Golden Son > Lightbringer > Red Rising > Dark Age > Morning Star > Iron Gold (though it’s grown over time)
Man this content shift has been awesome
best book of the series so far for me. masterfully done. it has all the things in it that make Red Rising a good series. each of those pieces that make up Red Rising that are present in Light Bringer are also some of the best moments for those aspects of the series as well. combined it makes an incredibly emotional and cathartic book. it gives you what you want if you're this far in.
I listen to the audiobooks, so it might be a bit different for me, but it was really good and an
awesome addition, i couldn't stop listen until then end and still left wanting more, thank you pierce can't wait for the next one, oh fyi i thought that was the last book so it could have contributed to the awesome experience
Recently read. Simply put love love love this series. Already can't wait for the next book haha.
Still aching after 'the sack of Demeter' hearing the word 'crop' 😭😭😭😭
As long as Sevro survives I'll survive.
Ah a classical review , love it thats how i found your chanel back then :D
Thanks for the review!
Agree here on super weapons, but think it will be be used per the decsription given which actually limits impact. Predicting this is why Atlantia has no POV, she will die or subdued, and Lysander is the main villian
Wheel of Time used to be my favorite. Red rising has eclipsed it. That's the only series I've reread multiple times in anticipation for the new. I was not disappointed. Brilliant. Can't wait for the next one.
For everyone waiting ever so patiently for Red God, what other books can I read in the mean time that are similar to this? Looking for something to scratch my Red Rising itch!
Perfect timing just finished the book yesterday.
I know I'm super duper late; 13:56
(I am currently rereading the Red Rising series) In Iron Gold, there was a section talking about the conquering and how the Gold's sterilized the human population on Earth. On my first read through, I came to the same conclusion with your initial thought of 'oh a big bad super weapon getting introduced so late is lame', but now I like to think this may be some modified version of the initial weapon that the Gold's used on humanity. Love your content, keep up the amazing work!
Thank you for another great book review!
Yeeeeees! Another book review!! 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
I needed a book as gripping as this again. Feels like it's been a minute. I haven't been so wedded to multiple characters. Usually I subconsciously pick a favourite and the rest I just want to get through the pleasantaries. I felt a little beaten up after Dark Age, but this was the perfect balance between the two arcs I feel. He weaved in DNA from both and bought in that revenge and rage of the reaper. Clank clank clank.
I'm gonna say it, I'm a Minotaur simp. I fucking LOVE reading about Apollonius. Even saying his name, Apollonius au Valii-Rath, he's such a great character. I love his diction, and I love that he's a villain who is ironically stable as a character considering everyone calls him insane. If you compare him with characters like Lysander, or Atlantia, I feel like during his time in isolation, his (rebirth), he actually did reflect on a lot of the internal weaknesses he has. In the battles he's partaken in within Dark Age and Lightbringer he's actually kept his cool and made the tactically correct decisions. I'm starting to doubt whether he's actually insane at all if you judge insanity as a detachment from reality and an inability to view ones self and self reflect. He seems very stable in that regard even if his goals are not what most people would aspire to.
Also he can monologue like a greek poet and it's fantastic.
Hi Daniel, not sure if you still have any interest in tier list videos but would love to see you make more tier list videos. One suggestion i have would be to individually rank books in fantasy and Sci fi series. I know u have tier ranked series as a whole but not the individual books. Just a suggestion.
When i saw this notification, I thought you were gonna review Linkara's Lightbringer 😅
I'm a little disappointed to find out otherwise, but great review nontheless
Are you still doing the monthly book reviews now that your back?
I agreed with just about everything that was said. Really loved seeing the reunification of some these characters.. Atm, I’d rank the books like this (descending order), Dark Age, Golden Son, Light Bringer, Iron Gold, Morning Star, Red Rising. Pierce is so consistent however and all these books are close
Good ranking but I’m shocked you put iron gold over morning star
@@justinjosie5417 they are so neck and neck for me.. it came down to me enjoying diff povs/intro to new characters, and seeing more of that universe for the first time.
Off topic question: What is that glyph symbol on your right arm? I like it. Thanks.
Got you goblin have to say what u call plot armor i choose to believe is just good luck. And feel that the balance comes with the no plan survives fully intact through conflict idk how much conflicts you have planned out but as a person who has there are no truer words
Mate I feel like I missed the Red Rising train with the first book and now it's come back around and hit me. It's all I'm seeing on my for you page.
If you mean that you have never read them I recommend you do. They are an absolute blast, with almost a progressive improvement book by book. regardless the bar is very high and wouldn't give any of the 6 books n the saga so far less than a7 out 10. Thoroughly enjoyable, must read, go buy the whole thing is my recommendation 😅
Excellent chat!!!
I don't think I've ever cried this much reading a book. I'm broken. (also never shouted insults at a character before). What a book
I am currently reading the previous entry in this saga, dark age. It is impressive to see how the series has evolved and PB as an author! Lysander however is so far a weaker character compared to Darrow, in Iron Gold I round myself rooting for him even though I round his ideals to be despicable. So far in dark age… he’s just another self serving gold. It’s weird. I am enjoying dark age much better though
Great job Pierce.
Loved Light Bringer, took me a while to get into it, but what a good book!
Great review!!
Now that you have finished this book, you should make a recap video of all of the important things that happened in books 1-5 that we need to know going into book 6. I don't even remember main character names at this point, let alone who they are or what they do.
I bawled my eyes out at the end of this book
are you going to review the new sanderson book yumi and the nightmare painter?
Bring us the Light, Goblin! Have to buy this book in English… 1 year to translate and publish? Not an option.
Lysander reminds me so much of Griffith
Also welcome back man, hope everything is going well
He's kind of a discount Griffith, and I don't mean that as an insult to the characterization. Griffith is, for the most part, incredibly competent if morally bankrupt. Lysander THINKS he's as competent as Griffith, but if you look at what he actually DOES it's just him making one f***-up after another, getting bailed out by someone else (or by pure luck), and then taking all the credit to boost his own myth.
@Hydralysk445 oh yes, for sure. But he is also charismatic as he'll, incredibly opportunistic, and believes his own hype.
Take his "I want to do what's best for all of the colors as a benevolent ruler" shtick, until he gets into combat in Dark Age. Then as he massacres the low colors,it's "How dare they rise up against their natural overlord, ne me?". He actually believes both things at the same time, which is what makes him both so slimy, and incredibly well written
What book or series should I read next?
Also, yay a book review!
Any spoilers or am I safe to watch? 😅
Dang I thought this was a secret Lightbringer book I didn't hear about. I miss Kip. :(
Missed ya buddy!
Did you just finish the book before making this?
I think this is the first time I've finished the newly released book before your review was released.
Same! I saw his interview with Pierce Brown and he mentioned he would have a review of the book and I received the book about a couple of days after that. I read it constantly thinking if I would finish before Daniel published his review
ngl, for a second when I read the title I seriously thought Daniel dug up Linkara’s old web comic and reviewed that instead
SPOILERS
I feel the same as you about this book who is steel good and there are good ideas but sometimes too many "short cuts" are taken.
For the goods:
- Darrow hiding on asteroids and his crew depression after their defeat and
Screwface caracter developpment who is the hidden hero who never betrayed Darrow and not never rewarded
- Lysander as the bad guy completly now, while in the first book we could understant his hate against the revolution and his point of view, now he is the same as the others golds even if he can't admit it, he is hiding behind "yes but i will make peace later after that genocide"
- Darrow who must take the responsability of what he did to the sons of Athena in morning star
- Sevro and Cassius having a talk
- Darrow finaly ally with Diomedes and Ilium society, the creation of a Trium.
- The attack on Mars (phobos) was very good
- Volsung Fa taking Ilium
- Atlas character building
- Lysander speach to save the alliance of the core and Ilium against Darrow
- Quicksilver who could put an end of all those wars and give victory to Darrow long ago but desided to quit and "Taboula rasa" lol
- Darrow new fighting style
- Ilium destroyed by the obsidians
- The plan to get Volsung Fa and hiding in the Leviathan was awersome
- Cassius and Darrow finaly becoming bro again like in the institute, cassius and Lyria friendship was very good too.
The Bads:
- Darrow stupid unough to go with cassius rescue Sevro, and his team letting him... Darrow is an Archy Emperator he can not just put himself in danger like that... He new that it was Appolonius trape but he just decided to swing in the mouth of the wolf when so many people have hopes that he will come back and so many people are counting on his return.
- Sevro plot armor too conspicuous, it would have been preferable in my opinion that he had his adventure with the abomination on his side and escaped to then send a signal of distress to Darrow.
- Darrow who always cote the way of the vale as a philosopher who only read one book in his life realy annoyed me. He has already studied all the philosophy and read a huge contity of books during his formation befor the exam in red rising but he cote only his "way of the vale"?
- Lyria and Volga plot armor, they are learning too quick . Volga became ALMOST a monster too quick...
- Darrow giving the Obsidian democracy (lol) and they just accept and vote for volga... That is not credible at All, volga can not become the leader of all obsydians like that...
we saw how manipulative the Obsidian society was with the atlas plan to create an obsydian hero and place him at the top of their pyramid. It is not democracy (which is just as manipulable) that will prevent these people from starting over. Darrow should have momentarily (the time of the war and the reform) accept the title of new king of the Obsydians, he is the only one really capable of uniting them because he is a God for them. Then as "God" gradually establish civilizing rules.
- The Defeat of Volsung is too theatrical where he goes from island to island to be humiliated on europa to finally ask Darrow to spare him if "confes". This contradicts the portrait given to us by the author of the followers of Atlas who are apostles who are not afraid to give their lives to create a "lasting peace". It's "out of character" for me.
- That was so obvious that Cassius will die at the end of the book i saw that coming since the begining. I feal like Pierce brown resurected him at the end of Dark age just to not have to kill an over big caracter at the end of Lightbringer.
Finally it's here.
@8:54 Lannister caught me off guard but appropriate XD
Read it, loved it and then had book fatigue for almost 2 weeks......
I've not yet read any Pierce Brown. Feels like I really should.
Book review! Nice!
I want to know…. why do we never ever see any more carved humans (aside from repairing themselves from war wounds)
I feel like there would be some reds who want to be like Darrow so much they would want to be carved to help the Republic… was it something that they may have mentioned in the first book like Darrow was a miracle one in a million chance to succeed? But Titus was still a thing? Idk I just feel like the main result/jump off from the inciting incident feels like its never brought up again.
@@lowkeylobo I think it just comes down to money and resources, 10 years of war along with a general society overhaul both in monetary and social means across the entire galaxy does not leave much room for biological weapons, you saw that quicksilver was more focused with automation so any new tech is merely conventional operations military tech. We did get screwface, lyria may still have a chance for enhanced red and the clown/pebble may give us more carved people. Hell just look at Pax he’s a “rose gold” with blue enhancements.
That gorydamn Lune is not Prime.
Now I want a book afterwards with some Cassius POV chapters ...
nice REVEW..
Book reviews are back?!
This is probably the best book in the series hence one of the best books ever 😅
Darrow does have plot armor at least until the last book in red god. Than as they say “the bill always comes at the end” can’t be red Jesus without dying for everyone’s sins.
Mild Spoiler: The way I viewed Darrow's impulsive, dumb decision in the opening wasn't that plot armor was saving him, but him and Cassius are just so smart on their own but when you put them together they share a collective brain cell. That is really true to these two characters in the first book, and it was fun to see them grow to better each other in Light Bringer. As always, great review!
I thought Lightbringer was supposed to be the final book, surprised to learn there's another one coming after.
This happened to me and didn't realized this wasn't the last one until I was well within the last 3rd of the book 🤣
There was supposed to only be 1 more but then PB decided he needed 2 more to finish off the series
SPOILER
The last page wrecked me. I cried for like an hour. Light Bringer is an masterpiece.
Been looking forward to this shiiii
Just finished the book today and it was a great read. My only complaint is Brown is starting to rely too much on misdirections. In the middle 3rd of the book it felt like multiple chapters in a row had twists. I found myself rolling my eyes when they kept happening.
Lysanders character arc was beautifully handled. I was rooting for him so hard in Rome and couldn’t believe how much I hated him by the end. I kept thinking we were going to see a clash of two hero’s with different views of the world but wow he got evil.
Unsung hero of the story was Diomedes. It’s tough to shine with so many other established characters that we’ve gotten to know for much longer but I would have run through some walls for him cuz of his speeches. Something’s tells me he’s going to win the morning chair.
As for the super weapon. I have a feeling it’s not going to work at all. Or it’s not going to be a weapon at all.
TLDR: Character stuff was really good. All the main characters has compelling arcs and grew a lot but some of the plots twists were a little ridiculous and felt like the middle part of the book was a little weak. 8/10
I like it,keeps me on my toes
Best series ever, there is no competition for me.
have i read any of the red rising books? no. will i watch this video anyway to support daniel as he changes the channel up? obviously.
Surprised there's no fantasy books that already used that name, Lightbringer is a badass name, but really common.
_"Lightbringer, by Pierce Br-"_
my dumb brain trying to predict things: _"Brosnan? Is it Brosnan?"_
I would actually give lightbringer more of a 7.5. Its okay and there are moment when Pierce Brown shines but its very much the necessary transition arc. Also, no time to die did the super weapon much better than lightbringer.
I think you're spot on with the plot armor on Darrow, but the real gripe I have is the plot armor on Lysander. This guy has little to no experience in warfare and just about succeeds in anything he does.
Also, the really most important question: How much do we get of the Minotaur?
Great duel and chase scene with him. He’s in the first half of the book a good bit. After that, none at all.
@@hunterwiersma4702 Too bad he's just in the first half. In the acknowledgements for the prior book he mentions pestering a friend with quotes from the Minotaur and when he showed up I felt he's the kind of villain that the series really lacks.
