The calm before the storm. It's weird because we're not used to calm, even though this book wasn't exactly calm. Maybe the better word is focusing or honing.
It feels like a mix of demon in white and howling dark and I loved it! It's definitely my favorite so far! I just wish we had more stuff with the new character that came in. Maybe see a bit of their life or something.
Disquiet Gods was so dope. The reason the Quiet doesn't directly interfere was brilliant. "Would you have him be a tyrant? Deny you the right to choose?"
Howling Dark has been my favorite because I'm really drawn to the really out there cosmic scifi stuff bordering on fantasy, especially when it starts to get into cosmic horror territory. I've loved the series from that point on but Howling Dark always sort stood out for that reason. So I was really, really happy with the direction this book took, and recency bias aside is probably my new favorite of the series. Either way, Sun Eater has further cemented its place as one of my favorite (if not my favorite) modern scifi series.
Just finished DQ, there were some lines in there that will stay with me forever… Another block to solidly Sun Eater as being my favorite series of all time…
Definitely my favorite of the series. I have some massive misgivings about chapter 40 and the theming around suffering but so much happened that blew me away. It’ll be a long agonizing wait for the end.
Im laughing throughout this entire review at your attempt to remain spoiler free 😂 I have already finished the book, and I can't imagine the task of trying to express the left turn that this book takes without spoilers.
Great review! I think I was with you on the very spoilery aspects that you only alluded to, with the new side character attached at the hip a weaker development and the villain here just dynamite. I do miss the Star Warsy stuff somewhat now that we’re in more high concept territory, but it’s still amazing and I can’t wait to see it all wrap up!
I read Empire of Silence early this year because I was taken by the blurb about "This guy destroyed a sun" stuff. As the book neared the end I realised there is not a lot of time for this guy to destroy that sun. And he didn't. OK, it's in a later book, I got book 2 and am in that at the moment. But something tells me that sun doesn't get what's coming for it until book 7, not even released yet, perhaps not even finished. The trouble with this is that I'm now reading with the thought "This had better be worth it" as I consider how much longer until the payoff. Anticipation can be a tough master.
It will be in Book 7. The author has confirmed that the battle of Goddodin (where the sun is destroyed) is in book 7. Consider the sun eating thing as a hook but you'll find other things to carry you in the series.
Yeah, the problem is he leans so much on future action and events, the books are already a bit long without spending a bunch of time talking about stuff that hasn't happened yet. And focusing so much on future events kind of lessens their impact when we get there. Too much foreshadowing.
Hi Daniel! I love the Ruocchio books. Have you read the Tide Child Trilogy by RJ Barker yet? If you love Hadrian and Darrow from Red Rising, I think you would enjoy Joron Twiner just as much. The series is pure fantasy instead of Sci Fi, but Barker has done amazing world building and created characters who will steal your heart and then, well let's say it's not pretty. Tide Child has my favorite non-human character as well.
I agree with the pacing thing. There were times when big meetings were essentially skipped over or rushed through. I would’ve liked to see more dialogue in place of some of the action. And yes I’m also tired of Hadrian spoiling his story 😂
Disquiet Gods fell short for me compared to the previous books. It didn’t have the same feel as the previous ones did. It felt very clustered and all over the place. The writing seemed off too, the dialog, the pacing, as well as the atmosphere that the previous books had created. I don’t know if it was the change of editors or publisher or what? It felt to me like a completely different author had written it. Overall this series has hit it outta the ballpark! Can’t wait for the 7th!
The closer we get to the actual "sun eating," the more the story is going to focus in on Hadrian. He's writing as a student of history, so he knows that, in universe, people are going to go into the archives trying to figure out where relics are and where other people ended up or what other people might be responsible for. And if he's hidden them-- especially the people he actually owes or cares about-- he isn't going to draw attention to what they did or where they may or may not have ended up.
@@offworlder4694 especially since we're talking about a lot of people who could realistically still be alive, even if people are reading this centuries into the future.
I loved the first four books, but 5 and 6 have let me down. Just finished DG after slogging through it for two months and if book 7 wasn't the last one I most likely would give up on the series to be honest. It really felt like the WoT slog so here's hoping it really delivers like that series managed to deliver on the last few books
I really loved 1-5 it was amazing. I just got to chapter 40 in 6...and I immediately feel like I can't finish it. It immediately feels like all things after now have less weight and agency. I was so mad when that reveal came out. It seems like most people love this book...maybe I'm alone in feeling this way but it really put a nasty taste in my mouth after we got that reveal. How did you feel about it?
@Darrowenthusiast I finished it. I felt committed at that point to finish it out. But that feeling nags at the back of my head the rest of the way through and probably will for book 7. I'll finish the series, but honestly it's just gonna feel...less worked for by the way it's given/handled. It was on its way to being the best series I've ever read and that one thing plummeted it into the ground for me.
I thought Disquiet Gods was going to be the last book lol 😂 so when it ended.... "NOOoo".... then I realized that you would have made a review video. Thanks
I’m curious, are most of you also reading the between book novellas or just the main books? I’ve just done the main books and this was the first time where I felt like I’d seriously missed some events and info having not read the novellas.
I finished the first one but didn't want to continue with the sequels. I don't know why, couldn't quite put a finger on why I didn't like it. I think it was because it tried to be too much like the Red Rising books, down to the latin names of characters.
Spoilers: I love the series, but the largest missed opportunity imo is that we never got a Hadrian / Alistar / Crispin reunion. I’ve wanted that scene since EoS. We could’ve at least had Hadrian meet Crispin and Selene at Forum in this book. Just such a missed opportunity.
Not watching your video, sorry don't want spoilers. I wanted to give you a view, like, and comment because you reminded me I preordered this book and it was auto delivered to my kindle so I could mentally engorge myself on this sci-fi book series I love. I'll come back later to watch after I finish this book. Thanks!
I feel like the curtain got pulled back a bit too far, I feel like the audience can pick up on the metanarrative in which Hadrian has been an agent all along without the unambiguous explication we get here
The three novelas are excellent. Regarding the short stories, haven't read many of them but the Daughter of the Swords in Tales 3 is excellent and introduces Cassandra (just read this after book 5 and before book 6).
Yep, no matter what space movie or how high tech their normal weaponry, in the end they all devolve into hand to hand sword fights. Imagine High Noon is getting to the climax in the street and both men run out of ammunition, pull out their cutlass, and start doing Count of Monte Christo in cowboy clothes.
Yeah definitely, I partly agree, but you also gotta remember there is tech advancement, it just comes from the extrasolarians. The Chantry clamps down on a lot of tech it sees as heretical, not to mention, space is fucking big, and for a new piece of tech to be invented and then propagate throughout the empire and become commonplace would take a long ass time.
LOVE Sun Eater, quickly becoming favorite SF series. DG was a weaker entry on my opinion (still good don't get me wrong). Mostly due to the pacing, like you mentioned. That being said I couldn't agree more that it sets up excellently for the opportunity to have an absolutely exceptional ending in book 7.
Awesome! I haven't started reading the saga yet, but they're in my TBR. I just hope the saga doesn't go on forever and Chris knows when to end it. If there's indeed seven books, I'm all for it!

The whole Ender's Game/Shadow series were my favorite sci-fi books for most of my life. I read _everything_. The short stories, everything. Then Orson Scott Card published The Last Shadow, the final book in the series. The book I'd been waiting for for a decade, and broke my fucking heart. What an absolute slap in the face to all of his faithful readers. I consumed it an audiobook form, and when I heard the narrator say "The End," I just sat there in disbelief. Ruined the entire series for me. I almost can't even look back at it fondly anymore because of that fucking turd. Then, ~3 years ago when the new Dune film came out, I expanded to more sci-fi than ever before. I read the entire Dune series, Frank's books, and then the Brian and Kevin sequels (should have stopped at Chapterhouse). I've read all of the Red Rising series and am currently waiting for Red God to come out. I've read Hyperion, and am currently reading Fall of Hyperion. I'm about halfway through Demon in White (Sun Eater series). Finally, and perhaps my favorite modern sci-fi series of all, the Three Body Problem series (aka Remembrance of Earth's Past trilogy). The three body problem series is the best hard sci-fi series ever created in my opinion.
Definitely a polarizing one. Thanks for the review! I might be in the minority here, but this is by far my least favorite book. Sun Eater has become my favorite sci/fantasy series of all time, but disquiet gods was not my cup of tea. Definitely Hadrian focused, new characters brought in felt one dimensional or didn't bring anything new to me. And found Hadrian repeating the same thoughts over and over, thoughts that already had decent page time in old books or in this book. All previous books are 4-5 star books - and this book was a 2-3 star for me :(. SPOILERish: the is a promise made to us early on with his "visions" of the future, then this book just ignores that and wipes it to the side. Felt abandoned and the decision to not move forward with this future didnt have weight to me, I felt cheated. This has to do with a relationship he sees in his visions.
Favorite scene in the book: S P O I L E R “Pain,” “Shall I Tell You What It’s For?” “Pain Teaches Mercy,” I Said. “You Suffer So That You Understand Suffering, So That You Do Not Inflict It Without Need. Pain Makes Us Human, Teaches Us To Be . . . Human.” Can't wait for shadows upon time
Here is the thing on the Christianity slant, its weird enough and clear enough that entities have been at play in the universe for so long that their mere presence in causality alters the way people behave. Religions seem to subconsciously anthropomorphize entities aspects of the behind the scenes meta plot. SO we don't know if this is the author trying to bring his faith into things or an Evangelion style "Let's take Christianity and Catholicism and do something crazy with it." So we are in a "what came first, God or the egg" kinda deal with this book series and its amazing. Reminds me of the first ones from Babylon 5.
@@calebmauer1751 Maybe, before the addition of the lore that Jesus was able to time travel and all that. The thing that I like is that the "angels" follow almost the exact same rules as the AI, which could make you wonder if they are actually just an AI in a higher level of existence. The things that happen in the books can potentially have real world religious references but at the same time I don't remember there being an egg with cables attached to it. There are a LOT of things that make it just different enough that its not clear is this is a C.S. Lewis or Tolkien like reimagining of the bible or if its that the bible in the book was influenced by another entity similar to how the Greek pantheon and other pantheons were influenced by the others.
I think I still prefer Darrow as a protagonist in the genre but this series has certainly been an excellent addition to my library. Looking forward to the finale.
The first book, I stopped reading after a hundred pages. I read everything right away. Not this one. Will pick it up again. Also pretty salty about not getting my Kickstarter book too. Over a year and Christopher has not delivered.
I'm surprised that this series is so underrated, it's probably the sci-fi series I've most enjoyed in the past two years or so. I feel that a primary reason it hasn't really taken off is because it's very much against the grain of modern science-fantasy: Possibly because it's small-'c' conservative.
I wouldn't say so. It's just too slow. Asking people to read a lot of slow books with the promise that something good is ahead is a tough sell. Compare it with the Hyperion books, from very Catholic Dan Simmons, where more happens to more characters in far less time. Or the extremely dense Book of the New Sun.
I'll be honest, I felt that way about Howling Dark, just a little bit. It picks up. And Demon in White is probably still my favorite, though Disquiet Gods is certainly a contender.

Disquiet Gods was so dope. The reason the Quiet doesn't directly interfere was brilliant. "Would you have him be a tyrant? Deny you the right to choose?"

The three body problem series is the best hard sci-fi series ever created in my opinion.
I haven't read the book yet Kendrick Lemar has all my attention right now
Definitely a polarizing one.
Favorite scene in the book:

“Pain,”
“Shall I Tell You What It’s For?”
“Pain Teaches Mercy,” I Said. “You Suffer So That You Understand Suffering, So That You Do Not Inflict It Without Need. Pain Makes Us Human, Teaches Us To Be . . . Human.”
Can't wait for shadows upon time
Chapter 40 was perfection
Hadrian is my favorite character in fiction ever period end of story. Like he is just mesmerizing to follow.
That was the best ad spot for swim trunks the history of the multiverse.
It's more like Fall of Hyperion before it got retconned in the Endymion books, Dan Simmons is also a Catholic author.

Spoiler review!!!
Waiting for Hadrian to eat Sunuusy 🥵🥵🥵🥵🥵
Daniel entering his booktok/Tumblr girly (gender neutral) era with his protagonist crush.
Currently reading howling dark
Sooo dissapointing, first half is such a uninteresting slog
I'll be honest, I felt that way about Howling Dark, just a little bit. It picks up. And Demon in White is probably still my favorite, though Disquiet Gods is certainly a contender.
