I was never happy with focus speeds until I bought the V in 2018. Gave my Sony ILC5000 away because it was TOO SLOW TO FOCUS IN LOW LIGHT grrrrr
Ive had it for a few weeks - it's truly amazing to have a 200mm optical lens that literally fits in my jeans pocket. I wish it was slightly faster at 200mm (best aperture at this length is 4.5) but like the saying goes - the best camera is the one you are carrying and many times while traveling, my DSLR gets to be a bit much. Rather than solely relying on my phone when I don't want to bother with the DSLR, this has been a great option.
Thank you for the comprehensive review of the RX100 VII. Your content was spot on for this camera. For its size I haven't found anything that compares. Even at this October 21 posting. I did buy this camera for all the reasons you mentioned. Excellent image quality and features in such a compact size. Just great when you don't want to lug the gear & have the capability of creating outstanding results with such a small camera. Yes, the price has remained high & for good reason. I have no regrets for the purchase. This camera will remain viable for awhile. Thank you for your excellent assessment & content. Best Always.....
A truly interesting option and one of the best reviews I have seen of it. I am seriously considering one of these. A few years ago I got tired of carrying all my junk around with me. I went to MFT and I liked it. I got a 1” superzoom and found that I was using it more than my MFT stuff. Because it’s easier to carry one and several lenses. But if only I had something with similar capabilities but much smaller? Ow I just need to convince myself to spend that kind of money on a tiny camera. I may have to work up to it.
Yeah, like she said, I totally want one as my smaller walk-around camera sometimes, but I can't justify the price. I think there are a lot of options out there for a small good camera.

This review was one of the best done I've seen - a great combo of use case and demo / review. Not too technical OR too high level. My current predicament - I have an A6000 with a 24-70F4 and 35mm 2.8, but I don't bring it anywhere as it is too bulky to always carry with me. I loved my Canon S100 but it's getting long in the tooth and lacks zoom range. I'm tempted to trade in my A6000 gear for the RX100 VII. I'm worried primarily about the low light performance of this camera for indoor shots in average indoor light without flash. I much prefer using available light and limiting the use of flash, especially for 'people shots' wide open and wide angle. How did this perform for that use case? Also - for handheld/braced outdoor stills in night time 'street photography' with available light - similar to what the phone manufacturers are touting with 'computational photography' - would this stack up even at F2.8? Thank you for your insight!!!

I aimed the camera without looking at the lcd and snapped away. When I got home I found those fotos in perfect focus! Great camera except it can be noisy in low light.
The size and creativity in this camera exceeds the 6400 in size and performance...a 24-200 zoom. Wow. The price is cheap compared to moving into Mirrorless with multiple lenses.

I haven’t used a Canon point and shoot for a long time but I’m confident in saying that the colors will absolutely be more natural coming out of them. Sony colors are challenging if you want that natural look without having to make extensive adjustments to your settings. That being said, the Sony is amazing. Irrespective of photography technology - when it comes to packing all the features including the wide range zoom lens - at that weight - this camera wins hands down.
This seems like it would be a great camera for traveling? Been wanting something to travel with internationally and was originally looking at the a6600, but that setup seems so bulky with body+lenses for traveling. Thoughts?
I know the camera has explanations using the C/Garbage can button but not always thorough enough and at 12:49 you mentioned the PDF and downloading it to the camera. Is it possible to describe that briefly how that would be done? Thanks & just bought one open box because of your review 💯👌🏽📸
Compaired to earlier versions this has a much longer zoom range. Did you use the range between 70-200 a lot, or would a 24-70 be enough? I am guessing that the rabbit is caught with 200....
It was also a difficult decision for me. I miss the light sensitivity at the longer focal length. But the predecessor with the faster lens lacks the better processor with the faster autofocus and the stronger slow motion. Unfortunately, in the course of development there are things that get worse while others have become much better. Especially in nature a good telephoto lens is irreplaceable. Even in sports you don't want to do without the longer focal length. So which RX100 is the right one has to be adjusted to your own needs. If the RX100 V is enough, you save a lot of money. So here is a question with recording audio to videos (even though the onboard mic and sound quality is great) could you not plug a small mic like the Rode Video Go mic for cellphones in to pick up a little better audio? For those complaining about the high price, the "V" version of this camera is for sale at MPB.com for $525 in Excellent used condition. (I bought it from them a year ago.) The Mark V version is really, really good, too (and, in some instances, even better than the "VII.") It also has a 20.1 mp sensor, though the V's is different. The V has a 24-70mm lens, but it's faster at F1.8-2.8. It also has a zoom ring. It doesn't, however, have the mic jack of the VII.
not sure why one wouldn't just buy a 6500, EXCEPT for the fact you want to 'put it in your pocket'... even then with cargo pants you can fit a 6xxxx in your pocket.
No it is not f2.8 - f4 but it also packs a 24-200 lenses vs the faster f1.8 - f2.8 24-70. I would prefer the 24-200 and get a shallow depth of field using a bigger telephoto and keep the iso500 or less.
I have the Mark V version, wondering if I should upgrade to the VII for the 200mm equivalent reach. I like sharp photos and only print up to 11” x 14” prints. If I have been very careful and check my settings, I have been reasonably satisfied with the results from my V. I have an older Sony A7 that I use with my old Minolta lenses, and actually prefer the results from my Mk V. Any thoughts on Mk VII sharpness using the longer zoom?
I wouldn't buy this camera. I would buy an a6400 instead. I have an hx99 that has nearly the same feature with a smaller sensor. It does the small camera work I need ...no prob. I don't think you can justify the cost of this camera easily.
LOL I thought this camera was going to cost WAYYY less. Nice, but holy crap that's a lot for it. Aren't there FF mirrorless cams now for much less than that out? I would love one of these as a walkaround/street camera, but it's too pricy for me!

I'm not an expert but I have two of these rx100m7 and I use the mag filter adapter to attach a variable ND and it works great. Hope that helps.
Im struggling to decide if I want this in my right pocket when I have a iPhone 11 Pro in my left pocket already!
Hahaha.. tough one. I think if you don't do much zooming photography, the iPhone is good enough. 11pro is good for photography & video shoot.
Nice review of a great camera but I'd have a hard time paying $1300 for a P&S camera.
I would have said the same thing until I used it. I'm still considering purchasing it!
@@LeighAndRaymond 5 months on... so, have you got it? If you haven't, you should coz I'm still rocking the RX100 'OG'. 😘
not sure why one wouldn't just buy a 6500, EXCEPT for the fact you want to 'put it in your pocket'... even then with cargo pants you can fit a 6xxxx in your pocket.
It's the lenses that may be more difficult to fit in pocket with the a6xxx cameras.
Good review SC.. But it's just too small for me... My pocket is the last thing I think about when I buy a camera.. Just sayin 😉👍👍
Is the rx100va have the same quick af, I like the 1.8-2.8. Tnx
Why not show non raw ?/ JPEG is a good one to show!!
Is it worth the 1600$ cad? With tax 2k!$. I only shoot stills and don't edit. Thanks and thanks for this great review.
The audio seems usually harsh.
why go with this limited camera when you can buy A6400 at the same price
The a6400 is awesome but the point of this camera, or me, is lots of range in a tiny package. :)
It's strength is 'compact'. You could literally put it in your front pocket yet delivering DSLR quality.
Razak Idris kJ
Powerful (expensive) compact camera but pocketable ???
Only if one has very large pockets or one stretches those pockets.
Very high quality but far too complex for a "point and shoot" camera.
Hi, Can you tell me if you still use the Canon M50? What are it's pros and cons?
I've never used the Canon M50. I did have an SL2/200D but recently sold it. I liked it though!
@@LeighAndRaymond What is the equivalent of a Nikon compared to a SL2/200D? I liked the mechanics of the SL2 but kind of switched to looking at mirrorless which is why I looked at the M50
If you want mirrorless, Nikon just released the Z50. Raymond shared our first video about it today ( th-cam.com/video/EjSaU-8RVkY/w-d-xo.html ) and a full review will be coming soon. Also, Sony has some great APS-C options. I used the a6400 earlier this year when it was launched and enjoyed it ( th-cam.com/video/kXX3Gs8nti0/w-d-xo.html ) but they have other options too!
Since it has no ND filter it is useless in bright environments whilst maintaining 24fps for video.
I bought an nd filter that attaches to the camera.
Similar to the Leica version I have. Ok for family shots but not a serious camera. But they do fit into your jacket pocket.
You did a great review, But This Camera is Not a point and shoot
I got this just before the lockdown here in NZ and it did hurt the pocket at $1930 NZdollars and they trough in a spare battery in
After using this little Pocketable A9 I'm finding it as one of the best cameras i have
Its great for Mtbing, Tramping and trail Running Been Shooting in Jpeg B&W and raw just colour
Look young lady just go and get the camera you won't regret this little Pocket A9
Mark Galer has free tutorials on this camera and The Alpha series They are worth paying for
Thank you
It's easy for her to praise this camera since it's a free loaner.
Coincidence?
Many of these images are horrendously bad.
I have this camera. It's fun to use but it really has its limitations.
200mm in your pocket is the USP. Full frame A7 200mm? Nope. Fit in your pocket? Absolutely.
Tiny Camera, Many Uses AND HIGH PRICE. Well, it's a Sony, what else could we expect?
To me, the price isn't out of line with the capability of the camera.
A lady who likes a small package
another gear review channel talking about a camera you dont need.
She’s lovely and hot ❤️❤️
Which is probably not something you are.
Great review 👍
