A Quiet Place: Day One Movie Review - A Worthy Prequel?

- A Quiet Place: Day One Movie Review - This prequel takes place at ground zero. The Abbott family gets a break this time around to focus on a brand new set of characters. Although it wasn't quiet as dramatically effective as the first film, A Quiet Place: Day One still manages to bring the thrills. Plus, there is an awesome cat which always increases a film's quality.

Saw it Sunday night. 4 people 2 adult 2 teens decided to talk throughout a movie call Quiet Place. I guess even Nicole Kidman and the protagonist telling you to be quiet wasn't enough.
That also happened at the theater I was at. I still enjoyed the movie, but the teenagers were talking throughout the movie, and that was frustrating to me.
The most unrealistic thing is how the cat acts.
It’s probably an emotional support cat
What does the cat do? Does the cat make friends with alien 👾
Is the damn cat gonna be in the whole movie?
Spoiler alert. The cat is really an alien who was sent ahead of the invasion to scout the planet
“🤨”
• • •
“It’s a service cat.”🙄
Be honest...Who'd die from ripping a loud ass fart at the worst time
If this actually happened the government would side with the aliens.
They aren’t aliens. They are undocumented invaders haha
Very underrated comment
Well, it's questionable what strategic gain there was by the things the government disables in this movie.
I’m gonna see this regardless. Lupita was so great in Us, she was really the lead.
Honestly us was not a good movie. She's a good actress and deserves better material.
@@jonfreeman9682The final act kills the movie.
@@spacepope87 Yeah the big twist doesn't work. I'm a fan of Jordan Peele and get out was brilliant. I also liked his Twilight zone TV show and he's a good actor too in Fargo. No idea why critics and fans raved about us. It was a pretty mundane home invasion story. Nope was much better with lots of allegory.
She's very engaging in A Quiet Place: Day One.
@@jonfreeman9682 I agree, too many plotholes. She was great in it, though, she saved that movie (for me!)!
I enjoyed the movie but it’s of course a mess for theatres cause you know movie goers can’t shut up 😂 legit someone was face timing someone during my screening… and another person took a phone call…
Then left then yelled at the husband to come here from the side as the movie was going. I hate movie goers so much 😅
In my theater, a kid was laughing for non-stop during an intense moment.
I hate watching movies with people
Ahhh but that's part of the movie going experience to see it with people even if they're annoying. Seeing it in an empty theater feels like something's missing.
I had two guys whispering in Spanish for most of the showing, sitting a couple seats down from me (one of which was originally in my seat). But, it was soft enough and not consistent enough to bother, and in this situation the IMAX sound really drowned them out.
I do find that the worst chatter is when it's someone right behind or in front of you. Your ears tend to pick that up like sonar.
man i remember watching a quiet place one in theaters. everyone was locked in, making sure not to ruin the tension. this time though, it was not the same. people kept walking around, eating snacks and whatnot. broke the immersion a few times.
I heard through the grapevine that the aliens came to this planet because they saw the acolyte & wanted to put an end to it.
😂😂
Well aliens are an intelligent lifeform trying to save humanity. ☝🏼
😂😂😂
I’m definitely one of those people that is not happy they didn’t answer any questions or expand on anything. All it did was change location and characters. It was a fine movie that I would never watch again
Yeah the whole sneaking tip toe around aliens have been done twice already so would like to see more backstory on the aliens. Origins, weakness, military fightback, etc but alot of these alien movies do the same trope focusing on a family or small group hiding running screaming 😱 then repeat and rinse. And that's okay but we'd like something new. Alot of long running franchise suffer the same like aliens, Terminator, Star Wars, etc. Same story again and again just swap in new actors.
@@jonfreeman9682that’s my exact thought about the movie
I found it pretty boring. Didn't care for any of the characters
@@nerychristian Ik fr they couldn’t have picked any better main characters like a sick marine dude or some crazy survivalist would have been way cooler
@@jonfreeman9682How do you expect humans to find those aliens' origins ? Just curious
About the weakness, one of the first of them(high pitch sounds and drowning) was shown in Part 2, which was a year after the invasion, how could you expect people to discover their weaknesses on Day 1 ?
Tho I agree on the military part, which was indeed dissappointing
This is more like Day 1 part 2. As you said yourself we seen Day 1 in Suburbia so to see it again and yet another very personal story I felt let down and its just not Day 1. We seen that already. I kind of expected a more broad governmental or military overview of the situation, hoped for some more details the last thing I need is another Cloverfield.
I loved but agree placed in Washington DC they could have very colorfully put in gore.
I went to see this 8:30 pm Friday and it was just me in the theatre so I couldn’t have asked for a better experience with this one
You've got to be kidding. Friday night prime time and nobody's there? How does this cinema survive.
@@jonfreeman9682 I mean people were at the theatre just not in that movie, inside out 2 is what people were seeing
There were approximately 10 in mine, but one guy decided to bring an extremely inquisitive kid who liked to ask questions in many of the quiet moments post attacks. 😬💆🏽♀️ lol At some point his adult companion must've bribed him because it eventually ceased. ;)
I always see movies before noon hoping for the environment you described. Lol Theaters must've been filling up somewhere, however, because it broke the franchises box office records.
Ironically, one of the best moviegoing experiences I've had was watching the first film. Theatre was about 1/3 full, mostly adults and teens. Very little distractions, I could tell people were trying to eat their food as quietly as possible.
Oh, and totally random thought I had while watching it: how the hell can they do home repairs? What if there's a leaky roof or something requiring a hammer or other tool?
The first was fresh and original. The second was even more aliens. So it's hard to top that. Home repairs can be done with duct tape and glue and use a tarp for makeshift roof.
@@jonfreeman9682The ripping sound of duct tape is very quiet. 😅
I love that the aliens are hanging out at the pier singing “O-Ee-Yah! Eoh-Ah!” and making sure humans don’t get on boats. Haha
They were attracted to that area by the sound of the boats.
@88detour I was wondering if the boats were trying to get some of the aliens to get in the water and drown. Otherwise, I didn't get why the horns were blowing.
@@EclecticDD That's a good question. Just like why all those people were headed in the same direction with all that rubble on the ground, some in creaking wheelchairs.
My main complaint is the actual monsters are starting to get boring and uninteresting since we've seen them so much. If they make a part 3, which they are cause I'm pretty sure this ones doing really sell, they'll need to expand on them some more or maybe add in a new monster. Movie was good, just not as good as the other 2.
Yeah they can't just do the same thing again and again swapping in new characters sneaking tip toe around aliens as that's been done last two movies. They gotta add something new. Some backstory on the aliens to expand the world building would be nice. Terminator for ie suffers the same problem. The whole traveling back in time to save Connors to save humanity has been done every movie and there's nothing new.
A "Part Four", you mean? 🤔
I loved it. The cat is the most over the top calm guy ever. Aliens? Nope. Being underwater? Nope. Acted like nothing bothered him.
Its not just you the screen was pretty dark were I watched it too. There were some scenes I was struggling to figure out what was going on.
So you're saying you barely see the aliens? Just pitch dark to cover up poor CGI. In 1&2 you could actually see aliens.
It was just fine. See it in IMAX, where they don't let the projector bulbs go dead.
I wish you had more theater options. What city are you in in South Carolina? I loved the cat. He was cool. I wish the people hadn't figured it out about the noise while Lupita was asleep. She wakes up and all of a sudden everyone knows to be quiet.
I liked the movie, but I do agree with you in certain areas where it’s just like. Nothing is really going on nothings really happening. Why are we continuing with this scene? The movie was an hour and 40 minutes and if it was an hour and 15, it probably would’ve been smoother.
I don't see how this is a prequel.. I saw it more as another story that was being told during the invasion. I feel like for a prequel we have to discover something new or why they are here. I loved the movie but I just saw it as a another story being told rather than a prequel.
That's fair
Well it's called day one as it's the first day of alien invitation so that counts as a prequel no?
@@jonfreeman9682 In my eyes no. Because the little clip we had in a quiet place part 2 already showed that. We didn't see how they figured out not to make noise. There was nothing resembling a day one other than the invasion happened. But we already seen that in the opening of the second movie. So there was nothing in here to distinguish why it would be a prequel.
@@sayahhx8300It's more of a 'sidequel', like The Borne Legacy is to The Borne Supremacy.
Spot on review. For me, second best movie to Civil War, for the year so far. That short runtime is so appreciated with the Quiet Place trilogy.
And you ARE correct that it's your theater failing you, not the cinematography. Everything was clear to see in IMAX. You actually hit upon one of the reasons I'm willing to pay more for a premium screen like IMAX, Screen X and Dolby Cinema: Those vendors have STANDARDS which the theaters have to follow on when to replace bulbs, etc.
Many years ago, Cinemark XD was my 'go-to' for the theatrical experience, but then 3D came about (which I still love) and that's when it became readily apparent that many 'normal' cinemas (EVEN Cinemark XD) try to squeak out a few hundred extra shows from those expensive dying bulbs. .... But that problem doesn't exist with (especially) IMAX. I've never been to an IMAX (even LieMAX) showing where I thought "That's kinda' hard to see."
I was disappointed by the movie. Lots of dark sequences, slow, boring, and no real tension or horror about the aliens (unlike in the first movie). For those who haven’t seen the first two movies, it’s never properly established or explained that the aliens can’t see but have really sensitive hearing - it’s just taken for granted. And the cat surviving and hardly making any noise at all is unrealistic.
I just got out of it. when stuff happens, the audio mix was INSANELY loud at regal
Just saw it, and I honestly love it. I thought the characters are compelling while also giving me tons of jump scares.
Is it better than 2nd as that's the best. Are there enough aliens.
@@jonfreeman9682 Nope, it’s the weakest one yet. The set pieces are not as strong as first two, but the movie still rules.
@jonfreeman9682 This one doesn't have the annoying daughter who gets everyone killed because she's obnoxious. 😅
So, this one is immediately on the bonus side for that.
Seriously, the first two films were great (saw them only on Blu-ray), but both had moments where I was literally screaming at the screen for how stupid a character was in a given moment. If you did the same, you won't have that in this one.
I don't think you know what the word 'compelling' means.
@@WelcometoVideoCity Seriously, we’re still discussing this movie instead of D&W? 😂 Anyway, of course I do which means ‘interesting’. I thought characters are interesting.
I hated the movie, everytime something that I wanted to see happened the camera either blurred or they put that incredibly annoying grey smoke effect
I agree with you Adam. It was a decent movie but NOT as good as the 1st two installments. The 2nd movie is my favorite but I do wish they could expound on the Aliens' a bit more. I also missed having the Abbotts. I've grown to love them sssooo...
This is a spin-off from the main story though. It's supposed to show how it all started when aliens first landed. Hopefully there's some big battles with the military.
Gonna catch this with my girlfriend this week. Really loved the last one!
Sam & Frodo, must have been a coincidence...
I like in the opening how they explain that New York decibel level is so high it's like a constant scream. I enjoyed Day One I think it delivered all the suspense and thrills of the previous films. I do remember in the second movie the family discovered a way to use sound frequency to defeat the aliens. I wonder why the film makers didn't capitalize on that. This was a fun prequel though can't wait to see it again.
But is it better than first two?
@@jonfreeman9682 Well, it doesn't have to be better than the first two, but it's on par with those movies. The previous films took place in rural America. This one is in the City of Manhattan so there's a difference.
No it's not better
The movie sucked
@@nerychristian Oh, Be Nice! 😘
It was a good entry but not the great one people seem to expect. For one thing .. we already saw Day One. It would have been better to go into what the heck these things want and how they ended up here.
Would you say it's the worst of the franchise.
@@jonfreeman9682yeah it sucks
@@jonfreeman9682 It didn't suck, but it was the weakest entry.
@@calloway1972 1&2 are pretty good and the second is worth 🎫 as there's more aliens. I saw this Nicholas Cage low budget knock off called Arcadian which I can say is not worth a 🎫 but is watchable.
You are making a good case for investing in a nice OLED and 4k player. Honestly though I almost never go to the theater. Watching at home has become far superior 90% of the time.
I thought it was better, just straight action
They didn't show how military or the government failed to stop these aliens or how they come to know that they can't swim etc. I wanted to see an apocalyptic movie where everything is going down since it was first day and people didn't know anything about these aliens
A 3rd Quiet Place movie. Can you believe it!?
To the viewers who continue to declare that Sam really desired pizza in her last days... 😬 lol
It was CLEARLY NOT about "just wanting pizza" but actually - the Memories of her father who she'd mentioned used to take her there.
In fact, It was their spot.
This was further emphasized at the very end when she went BACK after she'd gotten Eric safely to the boat. She's seated in the burned pizzeria holding a photo of she and her dad, when she was a little girl, in that very restaurant.
Her relationship with her father was obviously very special to her and she must've wanted to honor &/or feel Connected the beauty of that relationship before her passing.
This isn't a difficult concept to grasp, people. ;)
I’m watching this for the cats
❤
My suggestion for a part three make it an actual follow up to part two and evolve the alien design. Still keep the design, but evolve it. Since the aliens have been here for years, it would be cool to see them go through a metamorphosis like the xenomorph.
the premise sounds stupid not simple
Sounds stupid without the context.
The movie was dumb. If it was a Disney movie, the cat would be a toy
@@AdamDoesMovies but you gave the context. Woman dying of cancer wants pizza during an alien invasion. Of all the motivation they could have chosen they chose the silliest
@@ajax201000 The place she wants to get pizza from is special to her. She has a history there. I didn’t want to say that in the review because it’s not known until later in the film.
@@AdamDoesMovies That still doesn't change anything. Risking what time she has left and the lives of others to get pizza from a place that might not even exist now is beyond stupid. Theres a literal alien invasion happening with killer monsters on the loose, it's stupid. They could have had her seeking anything and it wouldn't come across as that silly.

7:15 time stamp - 😂 My friend you have a natural gift for observational comedy. You brought a lucid, vivid picture of things at a movie theater that you SHOULD be upset with....but you said it with a SMILE on your face. Almost to say, "I enjoy how clueless these people are as I attempt to enjoy a film." I'm going to see the movie tomorrow. You should try stand up or comedy writing for TV.
I didn’t love it as much as Part 1 or 2 but as a survival thriller with aliens, I really enjoyed my time. The characters were enjoyable and Lupita Nyong’o and Joseph Quinn were excellent together.
❤I loved it !! It's rare to cry during an intense movie because of love and humanity and once again another perfect movie in this trilogy and hopefully a Quiet Place Day One #4 will come ...any news on that ?? The cat was cool. The lead male was awesome- it was great to see a male in a thriller have anxiety when usually they portray the woman freaking out .
I am very excited for my home town theater to show this our humongous theater screen and they focus, color and crank up the sound to enhance the already well written movie (including John Krasinski as a writer).
I'ev been waiting for this to come out and my only issue was that it should have came out sooner.
The movie theatre I went and saw it looked pretty good, not too dark. But it was a very fancy theatre, lol. Also, I had a hard time opening my candy boxes during the quiet parts 😅
I guess the movie was fine, but if it isn't giving us any more information, why does it need to exist?
Not sure if this was a movie review or an attempt at standup, but it was distracting. I did appreciate your perspective and contrast between the movies. I dont think it sounds intriguing enough to watch unless I need a popcorn flick because movies that swap to another locaton but keep the same movie premise is only going to go so far when the main movie niche is basic and silence. The idea where most the energy happens in the movie is dialogue of emotions between individuals is even worse. Like a slice of life version of the original.
I try to make people laugh while talking movies. It's not for everyone but it's one of the ways I differentiate myself from the thousands of other critics on here. Thanks for giving the channel a shot!
I enjoy this franchise quite a bit but the logical inconsistencies are quite ridiculous. Remember how in the first film the main characters had to walk barefoot over sand? Now we have throngs of people walking on cement and all is good. I'll give them this. The sound design really helps sell us on the premise and deserves a lot of credit. Very rarely did I notice this inconsistency throughout the franchise even when the characters were running.
Everytime I watch a review and hear New York City I automatically hear the reponse from the Pace commercial smh 😆
if these aliens cant see, then how did they build the spaceships?
By touch. Just like you can walk around your room with your eyes closed because you know where everything is.😊
Maybe on their home planet senses like sight aren't needed at all. The way one Alien screamed to his cohorts that he found food and invited them to join him would support that.
@@crxracer805 ok but then what abt making computer chips for spaceships? my guess they were like soldiers sent by higher level aliens… first two movies did not reveal anything like this
Screen was really dark where we saw it too
i was so sad when the boat sank there was definitely enough room for john
I didn't like 2 but loved this. Watching it in 4dx helped though. I'm bias haha. Might be my favorite one
Adam, did you see it in IMAX at Regal?
I hate to go, since I enjoy the content that I have watched, but goodbye, Adam, and good luck.
Thanks! Take care
I LIKE all your videos, because I want to support your channel, but I didn't watch the whole thing, because I just have no interest in this film🤪
I found this movie very boring.. Saw it in theaters recently
An off topic question but are u going to watch and review Kinds of Kindness? I just watched it recently and I thought it was amazing
It's unfortunately not playing at my theater but I absolutely will when it's out of limited release!
@@AdamDoesMovies that’s understandable. But I don’t blame u because Searchlight has been pretty awful with their wide distribution releases

I just didn’t care about a terminal cancer patient obsessed with getting pizza. We have bigger things to worry about here. Wish they followed the guy from Gladiator and his young son instead.

great review Adamski
Is this a reference to the song killer? 😂
Lol.... Weed out the riff raff, __Adam u funny
One of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. Cat would normally have gotten everyone killed. Lame characters. Boring boring boring
So there is No explanation for why the Aliens came? Just running and screaming. It's called Day One like an origin, what a pointless reason to make an origin movie if you don't have a story. I'll pass.
2:40 most of the blood on the floor in that scene was blurred out. I'm guessing because of 9/11
I think you're right. If they had put the attack in Washington DC they could have gored it up big time. Being New York, the soke and dust and rubble did give parts of support scenery a 9/11 effect. But I did love this movie and I will see it again.
The cast being cringy and the cat killed me 😑🐸
You had me at "placer"!!! :D
Absolutely no reason for this movie to be made... a prequel without an origin story you mentioned Cloverfield but that was just one movie... this is the third movie without explaining anything about the aliens and yes the picture quality sucked it was drab and the story was more of the same.. we've already seen it... what a waste of time.
😻
It was sooooo Boring , and this Cat ? Next time maybe have a Roaring Lion ? WTF ....
This was f-ing terrible. And i loved the first 2.
I found the movie so boring. It doesn’t seem intense for me. The only part I like is the last part that made me touched. They should’ve focus on different characters. The guy who got on the ship and appeared in the sequel should have its own scenes. I think it will be really cool how that guy survived and got the ship. I feel like the amount of money they have doesn’t allow the crew to make more good scenes.
What a bore fest
A girl in search of a slice of pizza wow same thing same thing & lesser of the same thing boring unexciting but it is the BEST MOVIE to put on to help u sleep 👋 😴💤 sleepy time!
The whole slice of pizza had to do with one more time with her Father and their ritual of pizza after he played in a jazz club...reliving a precious memory 😢
This movie was an absolute major letdown. Boring, dull, horrible writing, stupid story, of all the things this movie could have done they picked this?
Horrible. The guy was super annoying. I literally fell asleep 5 times in the middle
Same...I litterally didnt see some of the scenes the reviewers are talking about cause i think I was asleep during them...I woke up around the end...super forgettable and useless movie. :DDDD
The main characters in the movie were annoying and stupid. Risking their lives multiple times just to save a stupid cat
You could tell they were trying to save money by not showing any real battles between aliens and police and military
Okay but are there any aliens or is it all just atmosphere and waiting around in silence?
@@jonfreeman9682There are plenty of aliens in this one.
Mediocre at best

If it's that short then you're not getting your money's worth. If I'm spending 25 bucks for ticket drinks and snacks I'd like to get at least 1:40 minutes worth of entertainment. Even 1:30 minutes I feel jipped as the last 10 minutes is closing credits.
@@jonfreeman9682 I understand I just think that if it’s gonna be that long it needed more things in the story to do and not just sitting around
