    In the 1970's I began buying couture clothing drastically marked down. That's when I witnessed the ladies working in these specialty shops getting ball point ink out of the most delicate silks, wools and boucle fabric clothing they were selling. They'd lightly spray cheap aerosol no scent hairspray on the area then gently rubbed it with white cotton terrycloth for awhile so as not to leave any watermark staining behind. It still works just as well today as it did back then.

    I use car upholstery cleaner on canvas bags and good old arm and hammer tooth paste to get stains out of leather bags. I think finding a bag for $3, cleaning it up and reselling it for 90% off retail is a win win for buyers and sellers! To those who feel different I wonder what makes them feel they are entitled to a service that someone else is doing for free?

      How do you use the arm & hammer toothpaste? Is it on soft leather?
      Do you wet the bag first? Thank you kindly

    First of all, I think that if you take the time to go out, find ,& clean what ever you resale, you, have the right to set the price to what EVER, you want! Don't let other people who don't those things, ever make you feel bad, about any price you set! You are doing a great job, keep it up!

      A friend one said to me
      “Know your worth” and I always remember that. As a reseller, especially if you have a family while running a business, it requires so much. Buyers have to keep in mind the time it takes to go out there and shop, the gas’s money that is spent and the amount of money you spent to purchase those items. Now that Goodwill has caught up to the reselling game…. They too are hiking up their prices. There are many resellers hiking up their prices and making a killing. My thought is, if you are worth it, your customers will keep supporting you!

    I COMPLETELY agree with you regarding the reselling and markup that is justified to replace what the person expended in their time, gas to travel to thrift shops and elbow grease to clean items and then time taken to post it online and sell it.

  • @scandia67
    @scandia67 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    The Dooney looks great! Thanks for the tips and tricks for cleaning. Here's my take: as far as pricing goes on eBay, I think checking on "Completed Items" under "Show Only" on the left side of the screen of listings is helpful to see what the market will bear for the bag you are selling. Then checking the various conditions (wear, stains, etc.) of the same style of bags that are currently listed will give you an idea on pricing. Determining price on whether you bought it at a thrift store and cleaned it up to sellable condition, or new then deciding to resell later, shouldn't influence your pricing strategy. Those who think you should pass on the savings just because you happened to find it at a steal are being ridiculous, and when you list it on eBay nobody reveals the bag they're selling is a thrift and rehab purse anyway.

    Hello again, Audrey. Amazing results on the Dooney & Bourke. I experienced using Hand Sanitizer or 75% Rubbing Alcohol on ink stains/spots and it worked for me; it was a thrifted leather Coach bag, so, I didn't mind risking it. I resell at a decent "Mark Up" with no regrets, Sorry, those that don't mind paying will pay. Thanks for sharing.

      Don't people mention using hairspray on ink stains?

  • @upward_falling
    @upward_falling 7 ปีที่แล้ว +32

    Have you ever tried Isopropyl alcohol for ink stains? It works beautifully, I've used it on fine fabrics, even a bright yellow silk shirt and there was no damage whatsoever. I do use at least 90% isopropyl for best results, and it only takes a saturated q-tip or cotton ball on the ink stain. I did love your tips for using the Woolite, I will be trying that next time I clean a thrifted bag! That DB purse is so pretty, what a fantastic find!!

      I have a silk Coach bag that has huge sentimental value to me. Regardless I use it but the white has become a little off white. Would alcohol bring it back? It is multicolored just the white has discolored.

    when i get bags, particularly super cheap, i'll just toss them inside out in the washing machine on gentle/handwash cycle with a little dreft detergent -- Once done, i put it outside in the sun (still insideout) to dry the liner area, then after 30 min or so, flip it to the correct side and put a paper towel/toilet paper coardboard core to keep the bag open as it dries on the outside. When almost dry i take it out of direct sun but leave it outside in the heat as it continues to dry. Ijust dont have the time or patience to do it by hand and i've found that washing doesnt damage the bag and if needed i can reshape it during the drying process by stuffing it thanks for the video.. i really enjoy your channel

      How do you clean the inside of a leather bag

    • @funsahw
      @funsahw 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      if it has a lining, pull lining out and wash by hand or just toss in washer.. you can always shape the bag in the drying process ..i've never had it mess up any leather ... of course i do this with a bag i dont mind fucking up since it may be a thrift find... if i paid real money for something i'd be more cautious in how i handled it.. but so far it's worked out well for me i believe letting it dry outside in the heat vs. a dryer is what makes the difference. i never put in the dryer -- i should add, on leather bags after it's 100% dry i wait 3 days or so then condition it with Cadillac leather conditioner and cleaner for good measure

      I did the same thing with a coach bag from a yardsale I paid 2.00 for. My best friend doesn't have a lot of money so I buy us both cheap designer bags when I find them. It was a dark (winter colors) and it was a super cute and moderately stained and smelled like cheap perfume😝. It came out great and she was like "that one is for me??!!"( I do give her other nice bags) I gotta say though this was a favorite of both of us and she loves it!!!it was a great way to clean, up cycle, and share the love😘.

    Your time, Your gas, Your investment into whatever cleaner you use, that YOU also had to go and buy. So, in my opinion, YOUR PRICE POINT. First, no one needs to know that you didnt get it from the original store and full price anyway. Its honestly no ones business what you pay for anything, anywhere! People either pay what you want or they pass it up and move on.

    Thank you for saying that a reseller takes his time and hard work , knowledge to give someone else a real value on bags that are costly , plus there’s risk involved for the person who resells there’s a possibility you get stuck with your bag and don’t sell it or lose money on a resell ,👍

    Rubbing alcohol will get rid of the ink pen stains. Just make sure it does not touch the leather. Thank you for saying what we go through to clean a handbag and reselling it. It takes a lot of work to clean it.Don't put the bag in the dryer! It will damage the resin on the leather. It will dry the leather out too.

    If you can get a hundred bucks get. a hundred bucks! I'm all about the wheel and deal myself. I recently found a gorgeous "name brand" purse at the thrift store and after thinking about it said: all i need to do is clean the inside and I'm hoping to get $60-$70......but I'm gonna start at $100 because it's in great condition, it just needs to be deep cleaned inside. Cheers! ps: thanks for the video! Very helpful.

    I just bought a coach purse from posmark, and the outside was in perfect condition. The inside however was disgusting, it had lose dirt, makeup stains and just plain dirty. It was really gross. I thought if you were going to resell something that you would do what you can to clean it up. No effort was made and it was not disclosed in the description. So I don't mind paying 25 dollars for a bag that someone bought for 3 bucks if they went to the effort you just did to clean it. Kuddos to you!!

    Thanks for the tips. Yes, completely reasonable that the person sourcing the item would have to charge that. You have to factor in that the person sourcing the item was using their time, gas, not to mention purchasing cleaning solutions, and brushes and carefully cleaning. If you factored in an hourly rate, you are getting a bargain.

    I watch several ladies on YT that thrift & resell . My feelings are pretty similar to yours. I do not resell , I thrift and it takes time, patience & perseverance to find the great deals out there. And then there's the whole little bit of grunge possible that comes with the territory. So, that's not what some folks would call "- good time" and the cleaning ?? Also not for everyone . All that taken in to consideration I think the buyer shouldn't feel it's wrong to pay more than the seller paid for the item at all.
    This was a really good example & guide for me! I learned some tricks. And I'm so regretting a Dooney I passed on at Goodwill because it was dirty 😕 now I know what to do I won't pass one up next time💖 thanks , Audrey !!!

    i would rather just buy it from a seller.. I went out looking for a good bag and spent about 8 hours of labor and 10 dollars in gas to find a bag.. If you look at 10$ an hour to look for the bag is 80$ labor costs: plus 10$ gas and then you have the one hour which is another 10$ to clean it..the bag cost me 10$ because it was purchased at Goodwill...I spent another 20$ to buy leather cleaner, brass cleaner, Woolite,leather conditioner... your total cost to purchase this bag is 130$.. I found the bag sold on eBay with free shipping for 40$... just go and buy it.. people lie..but numbers don't.. Better off just buying it.. I have better things to do with my time then digging through trash and stinky thrift store to find something to use. i keep my bags a long time and try to buy classical styles and quality..Thanks for the video

      Don't buy it and throw it away... it isn't worth the problems....

    STOP!!!!! Never use a harsh plastic brush to clean natural fiber materials if you intend to keep the piece or garment. This well meaning lady knows ZERO about garment care.

      Thank you for saying...well meaning. That lightens the blow of your comment. Next time, I’ll gentle rub using a soft cotton towel.
