  • Although OVERKILL are not considered one of the Big Four of American Thrash, Bobby Ellsworth and DD Verni have kept Chaly going wide fukkin’ open across 20 studio albums to date. This puts them in elite company, as only a handful of metal acts worldwide have ever amassed such a voluminous discography. Darcy asked to join the Metallurgy Wrecking Crew to help us sort through the highs and lows of this American thrash metal institution.

Always wondered why they keep dismissing the track “The Answer, never putting it on an album or compilation or playing it live. It’s got a different vibe and pretty long, but it still deserves to be heard by the fans. Unless you can get that cd version of “Fuck You” or you’re one of those special individuals who own the original EP, you cannot hear that song.
Great episode guys, very enjoyable with Darcy, thank you! Possibly the greatest thrash band ever; Feel the Fire and The Years of Decay are absolute all-time favourites of mine. Cheers!

Great shows guys. Always a pleasure to watch.
For rage it might be better to do just a top 10, instead of all catalogue

P.S I also listened to I Hear Black today and while I again don’t think it’s bad and I do like it ok, it’s also my least favorite of everything I’ve heard as you see on the list here. You guys rule!

Ah nice one. Ever since totally underrated and overseen band in my opinion. Will watch later but for me "The years of decay" is No.1 by far.

Years of decay might have been the first metal I heard, around 15 yrs old. Liked it but didn't really keep up with them after. Something didn't click with horrorscope. Cool episode. I know which albums to avoid if I get back into them...

I know everyone rides the jock of Years of Decay, but Horrorscope is one of the best thrash albums ever. It’s all killer, no filler.

This was fun. As I knew it was going to happen, I do think you all were a bit harsh on their material from WFO through Immortalis. When comparing to what their peers were putting out during that period, except for Sodom nobody was putting out as good material. (I’m not talking about the underground extreme stuff of the time) At least consistently. Some of their peers went away and came back. That doesn’t count in my book. Overkill never left. Overkill went “screw you alternative rock!” “We’re here and not going away! Nor are we putting a grunge album out either”. Did they adopt more groove? Yes, but it was always there. What true metal doesn’t have groove? Except for caustic black metal, or war metal groove is there, now how much groove? Yes, they amped it up during that time. I won’t argue that. But they never came close to Roots era Sep or Soulfly territory. THAT’S groove!
I knew it! If anyone was going to be critical on Ironbound it was going to be Alan. 🤣 you are one picky son of a….! 😂😆. They literally did what you would want from Overkill in spades and the songs seem too long?!? Haha. I also learned from his grading system his students must really have to impress him to get an A in his class😅. If Ironbound had come out in 89? It definitely be an A in his book. It was a good episode. It pretty much went down as I expected. Your criticisms and praises on point with your particular tastes.
At the end of the end of the day for me? Overkill’s worst is still decent if not good when comparing to a lot of other metal out there. But that’s just me. Thanks again for the content.

Great choice here, both Overkill and, of course, Darcy. Anyways, prompted by this video, I decided to blow the dust off I Hear Black and listen to it again after god knows how many years since. And, you know, I just don't think it's THAT bad, Granted, it's a major drop from the previous records, and hoo boy, is there a major Pantera influence on this thing, but maybe it'd be better to say that it's a better record on its own than an Overall album. Granted, it's fucking flawed, too. Admittedly! And it really does seem like the Sabbath accusation is largely coming from "Spiritual Void," which was a single from this album (and have from my old college radio days on CD single somewhere). But, I'm not feeling it's a total loss -- which is to say that I might drag it out in another... say... 20 years? LOL. Anyways, great episode.

Great show! Man, how to write a short comment about the Overkill discography? Let me do it in parts because I have other things to do today. By the way, I saw Megadeth on monday in Oberhausen and they are insanely good on this european tour and they change setlists every day. And Bruce Dickinson on tuesday in munich was fantastic. I cannot believe how good he sings compared to his boring vocal performances in Maiden. Now Overkill. Feel the fire is a very good debut album. Hammerhead, Rotten to the core and Feel the fire are fantastic. Other songs are good. Taking over is my number one. A perfect 10. One of the best concerts took place here in Würzburg on that tour. Opening act was Paradox supporting their great album Product of imagination. Second band Overkill with Skates and Gustavson and headliner Helloween, the first time with Kiske. What an evening.... .

Now, Under the influence to my ears is more uncommercial sounding. More in the style of When the storm comes down if you know what I mean. I like it. The years of decay is a masterpiece. Everything is perfect. I'm with you when it comes to the best song. Surely Playing with spiders/ Skullcrusher. What a great tour that was again. I love Horrorscope, maybe my number two. Another fantastic concert. Can you believe it? Opening act was Pantera at their very best at the Cowboys from hell tour. And then came I hear black and I still like the album very much. Why? Because I like The Answer, Skullcrusher or Horrorscope. That's why. Nothing wrong with doomy Overkill. That said, Undying and Shades of grey are really bad songs. Rest is very good.....

So far so good. From W.F.O on I think for a long time the albums are not longer great anymore. Where it hurts, They eat their young, Bastard nation and Gasoline dreams are the highlights here. So 4 out of the 11 songs have the Overkill quality. That's not more than an Ep right? Not enough. On the Killing kind I love Battle, Godlike, Burn you down to ashes and the ballad The morning after. Still only 4 great songs. A lot of boring material. But I will never forget that we had the chance to open for Overkill with our small band here in town on that tour. By the way, singer in our band was Oli Weinsheimer the organizer of the world famous Keep it true festival. From the underground and below mmhhh. No doubt It lives, Long time dyin' and The rip n' tear are great songs. But the rest? Still not good enough...

Let us combine the very good songs of the next five albums. Stone cold jesus, What I'm missin', Devil by the tail, Damned, No lights, Devils in the mist and Overkill V. Ouch. I don't know how it happened but Ironbound is a very, very good album. The titletrack is one of their best songs ever. Same with The green and the black and Bring me the night.Sadly the next 4 albums are all not so good copies of Ironbound. I think they did realize that problem. Scorched is by far my favourite Overkill album after Horrorscope. All Overkill styles in one album. From start to finish a great album. Love Scorched, Goin' home, The surgeon, Wicked place, Twist of the wick and Fever. Other songs are all good. Spotify says I played it 17 times last year That brings us to the question " Should they do another record"? I say a big Nooooooo. Scorched is a perfect ending. Never in a million years will they record such a good album again. Thank you Alan, Marty and Darcy!

I must also note that their set lists have not been that inspiring, they seem to play the same old set list for the last few years, I will never know why they cont to play Long Time Dying every single fucking tour lol.
