Celebrating Independence Day from Korea this year, which is kind of a drag. Until I came across this episode! Today I'm proud to be an expat rocker! Cue the fucking Lee Greenwood baby!

That's a kickass Buc-ee shirt. Speaking of patches (Pull the Plug is a great pick for a first sponsor), I have a Buc-ee patch on my TX themed vest that also features Texas Chainsaw Massacre, 13th Floor Elevators, ZZ Top, Power Trip, Solitude Aeturnus, Butthole Surfers, Black Angels, Mars Volta, The Sword, Wo Fat, and Spirit Adrift!
Worth noting is Texas' own T-Bone Walker, who's pioneering work on the electric guitar was cited by Chuck Berry and B.B. King as a major influence. He took the timing and runs normally reserved for horn players and applied them to the guitar. Hendrix learned the playing behind his back and with teeth tricks from Walker.
Happy 4th yall, don't blow up yr riffin' fingers.

Can't argue with these choices. I'd throw in Chuck Berry, Link Wray and Dick Dale as some of the bridges between Muddy Waters and Hendrix.
I'm glad Creedence got a mention. As popular as they are, I think they're slightly underapprecated when it comes to The Riff.

Speaking of Hank Williams, shoutout to Hank 3. Dude encapsulates BRE. Used to play 4 hour sets including country, punk, and doom.

Absolutely… I saw a couple of those sets. Epic stuff. Check out Hank IV - Southern Circus. Amazing album.

That's right, Nate! Best episode yet!
(I don't know how to write this... people have fucked up OUR PRIDE IN AMERICAN CULTURE so much. My PRIDE in American Culture has been twisted to RACISM. A pride that not only acknowledges the Black Community's contributions to America, but CHERISHES it)
Sorry for the disclaimer, didn't want to be misunderstood. Anyways...
Merica! I feel a lot of social media bullshit has co-opted what "Merica" means to me. They tried to take it from Pantera. A pride in what you came from. Horrific injustices took place in the South during Slavery, but the RIFFS that emerged from that cauldron, and the milieu of that time is one of, if not THE most heart-wrenching and uplifting forms of music that has ever been made. I was born in Los Angeles, but for some unexplainable reason, my heart has always lived in New Orleans. From the first time I was lucky enough to visit it. It's in my soul. Visiting that city has never failed to bring me to tears.
And Metal, for me, stems from New Orleans.
The Black versus White thing has always stuck in my craw. There is no "America" without black people. They are the SOUL of our culture...
    yeah.

Despite being the 'Triggered Euro' you mentioned (🤣), I did think of another person who adds to 'merica's claim as inventers of the riff, Mr Leo Fender. No Fender = significantly less BRE

Can’t talk riffs and not mention the Motor City we have so many great musicians spanning all genres I gotta say tho Stranglehold is crème de la crème riffage talks me back to burning down cranking it in the car in high school 20 plus years ago …Dazed and Confused personified the American riff energy in film form…Blue Oyster Cult brought the riffs, Bad Brains as well. Sgt Slaughter for prez god bless the fucking riff

@@BornTooNate was fortunate enough to see the Stooges reunion show at pine knob with Sonic Youth opening …I wanna say 03, Iggy was electric , opened with I wanna be your dog and closed the set with it …..pure American rock n roll. They let us all who were up close get up on the stage at the end and rock out together with the band. Gnarly night

I think you mentioned Blue Cheer in passing; I think they and Iron Butterfly helped laying down the big riff blueprint for what would later become heavy metal.. 🤔
