Absolutely the best instructional video I have seen. I was totally intimidated by the prospect of taking out interior panels, but Brandon explained how all the fasteners worked and what to slide where when putting it back together. He made the job quite doable for a guy who has never removed a piece of trim in his life.
Installed this in my RF today. Overall this video was super helpful and accurate. A couple of additions: 1. The RF is more difficult than the soft top to push the plug from the front through the trunk. Don’t even bother trying to feed it without taping it to a coat hanger. 2. Don’t stick the tape on the hole until after you push the plug through the impact foam (of course, make sure it’s looped through the tape first!) I put the tape on first, and the peel came off while I was trying to push the plug through, which ended up messing up the stickiness. I’ll be buying some Scotch Extreme and cutting a replacement.
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, My wife just obtained a 2017 Miata Hard Top RF Grand Tourning, RED. in color, and I watched your video twice then watched it step by step and completed the installation. I got lucky by fishing a Coat Hanger from the Trunk to the right side of the Passenger compartment, taped the wire to it then pulled it through. I got caught up a little fishing the wire from the camera up through the bumper and I think the toughest part was removing the tape from the harness in the trunk so I could fish the camera lead through the rubber seal. It worked first try, cleaned up the wires with Zip Ties and it looks perfect. Thanks again this was a HUGE help and it turned out a great success.
MX-5 2016 ND, After watching this video, unless I had someone like you doing the install I would be hesitant to mess with my car. Great video, would be nice to have a rear camera as I have them in all my other cars.
Brilliant video. Step by step which even I could follow!! Not only am I an OAP I've also had a stroke and find things difficult. It took me most of the day but completed the task, eventually. Clear, precise instructions, would highly recommend this video.
At 20:30 Brandon grabs a longer drill. I used a 3/4 inch paddle bit. It is the perfect size. It just fits through the hole you have drilled in the bumper cover. And since a paddle bit scrapes the foam rather than trying to twist through it makes a clean hole with the bits falling out on the floor.
Thank you thank you for the great camera angles and detailed descriptions of where to pull and where the clips are! Seriously could not have done this without your video- also SO GRATEFUL you showed us how to put it all back instead of just saying - “put it back in reverse order of how you took it off”.
Many thanks to Brandon, this video made the installation straightforward, great camera work and clear explanation. Job completed in just over 2 hours, I don't think I could have done it without watching Brandon a couple of times
Excellent video. Step-by-step. Thank you for posting this. The FM Camera worked perfectly. I was holding my breath the first time I shifted into reverse- but to my relief the camera had video!
Thank you VERY much for this clear and very accurate step by step video. With this video at my side I installed my backup camera today. Would not have been willing to try it without your help.
Thank you so much for this very detailed video, i just installed this rearview camera on my 2017 RF and you made it very easy ! For RF owners, if you struggle to pass the cable to the trunk, i used an electrical copper wire (22 awg or something like that). Electrical wire only, i started from the trunk to the front (easier to find a path this way for me). When the wire passed all the way through, i taped the cable to the wire, front side. Then, back to trunk side, i pulled the wire gently with the cable attached to it. There is not much space, but it passes without trouble.
I just installed my backup camera and everything worked out fine! The video was extremely helpful. First, I watched the whole video, then when I got brave enough, I went step-by-step, pausing the video as it was time to do the next thing. The ONLY thing I would mention is if you have an RF like me, things will be a little easier with the top down, and you need the battery for that, so lower the top before starting.
Brilliant "how to" video, thank you so much for taking the time to shoot and post. Followed this step by step and installed my rear camera into my 2015 MX5 GT ND (in OZ the ND model starts in 2015). Like others have said.. SOOO GRATEFUL!
By far the best “How to” video I’ve seen. Initially I had a little trouble getting the camera cable started. I took the short end of a hex wrench (Allen wrench) and pushed up on the foam inside the light slot. The cable then slid through easily. Thanks for a great video.
Just installed and went well! Great video explanation. Also a great opportunity to do some panel detailing while everything was apart. For the RF, wire running kits highly recommended (the same kind of tools you can get to run television and ethernet cables behind your house walls). That part went surprisingly quickly. Thanks for a great video!
Can’t thank you guys enough for this video. I decided to give this a go and took my time and hey presto the camera is installed and worked perfectly. The only thing I noticed was that I needed the engine to be running for it to fire up rather than double engine start button push. Thank you!
Hi Brandon, many thanks for the showing me how to do the backup camera install, your installation is excellent and very descriptive. I was able to follow with ease. I just bought a 2017 MX5 RF, I was sad to see it missing this feature. I was cheering you buddy when I check/tested the camera ( It’s working well) as you showed to do on your fabulous video... Wish you all the best! - Tony from Canada.. Cheers😂🍻
Nice to see someone just taking apart _one_ side - the other videos show the driver (left) side being pulled apart (the sill and the weather strip, etc.) I'm sure I'll go full on OCD with the wire ties and felt tape but looks pretty close to factory (actually better since the 2019's is right in the center of the bumper cover and doesn't look as good as this).
Great DIY vid. I'm considering buying a Mazada MX-5 Miata Grand Touring RF. And a back up cam is not just cool, it's a safety issue for the vehicle, yourself, and others. Thanks for sharing. :)
Just added the rearview camera and these step by step video instructions were great help. I had to use a coat hanger to get the cable fed to the trunk. Super glad to have this upgrade on my '17 RF
Thanks for the video and a great product. Installation was simple. The only problem was me. Managed to drop the 10mm from the Screen bracket, figured it would roll out but couldn't find it. Stole a 10mm bolt from the door bushing. Then found the lost bolt had teletransported to the floor. Trip to Mazda saved Then I realized I forgot the rebolt the front kick plate. FINALLY, I thought I had screwed up the drilling when the camera cable came out by the muffler. This actually made it easier to feed back up into the trunk.
Great video, installed mine following this instruction in under 2 hrs. You can use your stock long antenna to guide the wires! I find it super helpful because it is very long and very flexible to work within those tight spaces. Also, the video had the roll bar installed behind the seats. It seems like the stock setup prevents the plastic piece at 9:27 to be detached? I just loosened it enough to allow the piece after that to be taken off.
An additional comment. I found the SEATBELT TRIM piece easier to get in position if I removed the trim piece on the front of the stock roll bar. It just pops off (the rear black plastic piece is bolted on) and now the Seatbelt piece can be seated and the roll bar trim now just pops back on
I just added the camera. Your video was awesome. However, I don't seem to have android auto anymore and my navigation isn't working. I don't think my usb ports are working correctly anymore and that's where the map sd card goes.

@@FlyinMiataVideo I have the car some months now and it's without the screen but with the radio. Do you have a recommendation which camera I can use with an Android Screen System?
@@Supreme40x - Are you asking about a Sport trim level ND Miata (they didn't come with displays on the dash)? Unfortunately, we haven't played around with adding a reverse camera and Android head unit for those trims, so we don't have a specific recommendation. There are oodles and gobs of Android radio head units with reverse cameras out there on sites like Amazon and AliExpress, but the trick is probably finding one that will mount securely to the ND dash.
Same goes for me. I‘ve pushed the camera with a little bit more force into the bumper and I‘ve heard a little clicking noise and now i‘m hoping that those metal clips on the camera have snapped into place. But I already went ahead and ordered some 3M pads in case the camera is getting loose again.
Fishing the camera wire to the trunk/boot is a LOT more of a challenge I was able to get mine back there by using one of those "grabbers" with the little claw at the end (I didn't use the claw part for the wire just taped mine to the end - I started with a wire fish-tape - don't use that! I had caught the end in a wire bundle and spend about 2 hours getting it freed up. Other than that it's pretty much the same as the convertible.
Wow, what a pain. Didn’t that car come with a camera and harness installed? And if so, why not figure out how to interface the new camera with the old wiring?
They started coming with cameras in 2019. This is for the 2016-18 models that didn't have that option available. And it is amazingly well integrated for an add-on, but in installation and in use. It uses as much "old wiring" as possible but some of those wires just aren't there.
Good video. I'm on the fence about doing this because if I ever wanted to pull the bumper (I may want to install a hitch in the future), it looks like it would require undoing the wiring. Is it possible to have the connection go on the other side of the rubber grommet so that you have more of a quick disconnect?
that's an argument for not sealing it up with the rest of the wires in the rubber plug in the trunk wall and the inside of the bumper. I just ended up cutting a slit in the plug and feeding the wire through there. Actually unraveling the old tape without damaging anything is pretty tough, risky, and time consuming

There are a few different ways to change the wallpaper on the screen. On the earliest cars like Andy, you can SSH right into the infotainment system and upload files from the command line. It's more common do it with a thumb drive, the car will execute commands on the drive and can load in new images as well as other system tweaks such as "pause on mute". Check the Mazda3Revolution. com forum for some good information.

We haven't installed the Apple kit, so we don't have any direct experience to share. We know they're compatible and it's very likely that it would be easiest to install both at the same time.
Flyin' Miata thanks- just got the Apple / Android kit and will (attempt) to install along with the rear view camera I purchased from yourselves. Will post update to confirm. Thanks for your great videos, keep up the good work!

@@andrewniblock4464 I just did them at the same time too - only requires taking off a couple extra pieces of trim by the little usb box you have to replace. Another perk is that the OEM stereo upgrade kit comes with more foam tape than you need, so you can use it when bundling up the camera wires in the trunk.

Did anyone have trouble with the head unit recognizing the camera? Installation went well and battery was disconnected, but screen is not showing rear view.
David is talking to our customer service team, we'll get things sorted out.
For those wondering, make sure your infotainment version is up to date.
will this work on gt miata, if I don’t have apple carplay?
This camera should work on all the trim packages that also offer the infotainment screen.
My stand installed it and say there is no reference lines 😮😮😮 does anyone know if there needs to be something activated on software?
If you are having issues, please reach out to our customer support team directly via phone or email. They'll be more than happy to help!
@@FlyinMiataVideo I am going to pick up the car in the dealership Wednesday and confirm if they managed to fix the issue or not. If they didn't I will send a email seeking help. Just posted a message here in case anyone else had the same issue and managed to solved it.
thanks, what kind of connection does the camera have,
It's a proprietary plug on the end of a jumper harness that bridges into the factory unit. Brandon goes over all the details in the video.
i think the best thing i got out this video is finding out i have a storage compartment in my passenger seat
where can I get the CarPlay kit and software?
Your friendly Mazda dealer should be able to help you out there.
eBay is likely to be the cheapest option. Should be around $150. For the software, check out the master thread on Miata.net for a good guide.
Is this kit still available?
It certainly is! Head over to the Flyin' Miata website.
Where can I have someone do that for me in Houston?
We don't have any recommended installers in Houston. You might try reaching out to your local Miata club to see who they recommend.
@@FlyinMiataVideo Thanks
Any thoughts or experiences in combining this with the available Apple / Android Auto kit (0000-8F-Z34) install? Thanks
Update: Apple/Android kit installed in combination with the rear camera - all working fine. As already mentioned if your thinking about these mods, get them done at the same time. Thanks!
@@andrewniblock4464 Thanks for the update! Hope your install went well!
Replace your cabin air filter while doing this. Trust me.
Great suggestion!
I honestly would've rather done this than have the butthole on the bumper. So far it's the only thing I really don't like about my ND2.
You've got an engineering degree, right? Based on your terminology, I guessing you do. :)
Good guess! Brandon is our resident engineer and head of our Research and Product Development department :)
@@FlyinMiataVideo I'm a formally trained CADD operator (Computer Aided Drafting and Design), I've work with several engineers.
Took 3 hours to get everything set up just to realize that all the work was worthless because nothing happens when putting the car into reverse…
Sounds like something went wrong. Please reach out to our customer support team directly and they will be happy to help you trouble shoot the issue.
@@FlyinMiataVideo Yes actually the wiring harness was faulty. After getting a replacement one, everything just works fine! Thanks for the reply and also for the video 👍🏻
