You missed to inform: 1- Enable your root admin for the System Administrator acces 2- Restart your computer after you have done all the changes Overall: great video
Thank you for sharing! Unfortunately, I don't see a systems administrator option when i log out or restart. I always thought I was already the system administrator, in your case "Mike" was the system administrator.
At first, when I logged back in to my usual admin account AFTER changing the home/account name, the dock was placed at bottom (I set it on the right side), and several icons were question marks. Although applications I newly downloaded were there. So I restarted the machine and everything is fine now.
Very important to restart I freaked out a bit when I saw my wallpaper everything looked different. Lol. Just restart after the change and everything golden! Thank for the comment!
when i changed the name, on that new account under “users” it shows a user that has the same file name as the one i just changed but with nothing in it now it looks like. i’m guessing it’s okay to delete that one?
The same is happening to me now. May I know if I should delete the extra folder? But it seems like all of my old files are not in this newly created but in the old one.
Two years ago I almost succeeded in doing that but gave up but today I understood the concept: You create a new user and from there you will have the ability to rename the folder. My fault that made me fail two years ago is that I forgot to adjust the home directory/path after having renaming it... Hence the so many ????????? question marks when I logged back in the original account and it was terribly disastrous. It worked now. I switched from the monotonous rubbish "user" to the sweet "franco"
Hi i have an issue where i followed all the steps but in the system administrator account when i click on users and groups it says i cant load this preference pane. Please help me😖
Nevermind, I figured it out. I was confused because the icon doesn't switch to the "locked" position even though the changes were made. Thanks for the tutorial!
OMG it would of been nice to say we need another user account from the beginning -_- Im nervous to restart my computer because I can't get logged back in to make any more changes when it ask for our name and password, not sure how it saved my error smh
I managed to change the home folder name using the root method thanks!, but when I logged back in all of my personal settings had been set to default and it removed some of my applications. Could you help, please?
dominic Styles dominic Styles after changing the name did you also change the "home directory" of the home folder under the advanced settings in users and groups system preference ? Look at 4:20 mine reads /users/Mike. Yours should read whatever you changed it to
I renamed it back to what I had it and all my settings and preferences came back but I don’t know why when I follow your video it doesn’t transfer them over
I created another account to be the "system administrator" but it turned out to be "administrator" only, and it doesn't work as it should be because I can't access anything from the original "admin" account, please help! At 3:59 you said don't be mistaken and use a standard admin account and try to change it but I don't know how to switch to the "system administrator".. can you help me?
Hi! I thanks a lot!!! I managed to change it!! although I have a question now.... when I restarted the computer I went to users and groups so I could delete the root acc...however I only found my regular acc and the other one was gone... idk is this normal? It kind of freaked me out!
@@TechCoreDuo my son tried to change the administrator user name and password but ended up messing my Mac up. Now I can't see my files and account. What should I do please? He didn't change the home folder name too
@@TechCoreDuo I want to thank you for replying to my comment. I honestly did not expect an answer given the fact that I failed to provide any detail as to what was getting the better of me. I did watch your video two more times and I seem to be somewhat better off now. The thought of trying to complete the process smoothly and then finding all files missing as a result of some error on my part is enough to cause a monster headache. Let me give an example of something that is very simple to you, but I just need some confidence building on. Suppose my real name is Leonard Smith and my account name is applepie. After setting up another administrator account to make these changes, when I return to the Advanced Options tab in Users & Groups, can I change the account name to Leonard Smith and the home directory from /Users/applepie to /Users/Leonard Smith? As you can see, I am looking to have uniformity and have my real name, user name and home directory be the same. Does a MacBook Air using El Capitan allow for that or must there be some unique distinction between the names? I appreciate any assistance Thanks, Len.
LOL that was a close call, just as a best practice, always backup data using time machine before adjusting permissions related settings. Also backing up in general on a regular basis is important. This was to close for comfort, I'm updating this videos description to mention backup data.
what a stupid product to have, imagine spending 1000+ euros on a laptop and need to take 5 minutes just to change a fucking name of a folder. I wish I never switched to this shitty product
Thanks! It's been bugging me for months having to see the previous account name on mine instead of my own lol.
Hey man, just want to say, this coupled with your enabling root user video is a life-saver. Cheers man! 👍🏻👍🏻

I did everything as the video and when I logged in to my account there’s a lot of changes and some applications icons appear as question marks 👎

Was very methodic as per your instructions. Worked 100% Thanks! :)
Great video, Thank you !
I don't have a System Administrator account on my Mac. Is there someway to do this? I have MacOS Mojave.
What does it mean if it won't let you click the lock button once you've changed the name? I followed the steps exactly
Nevermind, I figured it out. I was confused because the icon doesn't switch to the "locked" position even though the changes were made. Thanks for the tutorial!

Went back to root but can't find Macintosh HD anymore, to rename the folder to it's original name. How do I find it ?
When I go into root - system preferences - users I can right click on the users but it doesn't open anything.
OK got it. Had to enable right click in mouse settings - phew

Thanks a lot buddy, it was really helpful, really appreciate that. Big Up ! :)
Thanks! It works!!!
Worked for me thanks a lot
After i logout, system administrator is not showing in my Macbook air
Vikas Viki you have to enable the root user account first.
TechCoreDuo . I have enabled root uset, but it messed up, after I logout it's showing like other account.
Vikas Viki yes click other and type "root" and then the password
TechCoreDuo yeah i have done that, but still that home folder name I can't change. after I type root and password, it's asking signin with my Apple ID
Vikas Viki hmmm watch the video again I think you are missing a step.
Thank you!
Does anybody know if this works on MacOS Mojave??
Kevin D yes it does
Great I Jumped the gun edited the name and now password and user don’t work.
Change it back to what it was
TechCoreDuo do I have to log out to do it?
Yea just make sure root user is enabled and login as root to make the change
TechCoreDuo yeah I can’t create a root user due to the user name and password not working
Can you create another regular Admin User ?
Can not hear him
Life saver
I may be in the minority, but I honestly found the process to be confusing.
Nothing wrong with that. What do you have questions about?

The account name must be all lowercase without any spaces. This is a limitation within macOS
@@TechCoreDuo Thanks ... the home directory becomes /Users/leonardsmith
Additionally, the account name becomes leonardsmith (plus the home directory change shown in my other post).
Thanks!
Great that worked
