Sorry to be that guy... but remove your engine cover and it will allow more heat to transfer to the pork chop, and idling will allow more heat to build under the hood as less air to pass threw the hood since your not driving. Also I've reheated food with the defrost and max heat on.

I've tried cooking things on a dashboard when I was a kid, and also on a sidewalk... both times I made a mess and got in trouble. However, the most successful unorthodox cooking I accomplished was with my brother. We were home, and hungry, and no one else was there, but we knew how to cook. There was ground beef, tomato sauce, and spaghetti, so we put a pot of water on to boil, and went to brown the meat (yes, Jason Murphy, I've been browning meat since I was about 8 years old, it doesn't make me better than you, just less hungry and less often). This is where we ran into trouble. The frozen block of ground beef was probably about 9 pounds (my mother bought in bulk since there were so many kids, I'm one of eight), and it was too big to fit into the pot to be browned.
We figured it wouldn't be a problem, we could just saw it in half with a knife (a serrated one). After about ten minutes of fruitless sawing, we hit on another idea: why not just use a hammer and chisel and break the meat apart? Unfortunately, we could find neither hammer nor chisel, despite the wealth of tools in my parents' basement. What we did find was a very large flat-head screwdriver and a very rusty wrench (also very large).
We improvised a chiseling station on a wooden stool in the kitchen and began taking turns alternately holding the screwdriver (our "chisel") and bashing it with the wrench (our "hammer"). If you had been in the house somewhere you would have heard a strange rhythmic metallic banging for about ten minutes, followed by a loud dull thud (half of the meat block hitting the floor) accompanied by halfhearted cheering (we were very happy at our success and so broke out into spontaneous vocal joy, but we were too tired to give it much effort).
I can't remember if anyone else came home by that point, or if we actually got to eat the spaghetti, but that part of the story seems a bit anticlimactic compared to the tools being used for not their intended purpose part. Anyway, great video.

Back in my college days I was basically living out of my car for 11 hours a day. Community college, didn't live in town, took so many classes that they refused to let me take anymore that semester. What i'd do is make 1 egg omelets, put them on a plate and wrap the plate with ceran wrap. Then i'd just set em in my backglass or on the dash and park in the sun. By the time lunch rolled around the cheese was melted and they were almost freshly cooked. Cooking ramen though, that's impressive.

  • @the_real_Kurt_Yarish
    @the_real_Kurt_Yarish 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

Honestly, I think driving the car was hampering the cooking process. Think about it: cool air from the radiator is being blown over the engine. Brian said he was traveling at highway speeds, so that's air that's already traveling at at least 60mph blowing over the porkchops (and so therefore is working to cool them), and the radiator is cooling the air even further. Granted, the engine was revving harder and was therefore hotter, but if the radiator and air speeds is enough to keep the engine at a reasonable temperature, it's not to much of a jump to think it would cool off the porkchops as well. Even if it's only a few degrees. Revving the engine while parked probably would have been more effective at reaching that 145°F mark. And, as others have mentioned, the plastic cover on the engine was likely insulating the engine compartment for the porkchops sitting in the middle. Overall, this could probably be done more effectively.
But watching you two fumble around and figure things out for yourselves is more fun to watch, so all's good.

Here in Brazil we have a thing called "Costela na Turbina" which is essentially beef/pork ribs enveloped with aluminum foil (just like you did) and cooked insine a truck's turbodiesel engine compartment. The main difference is that we drive the thing for 8 hours and the engine gets way hotter. The good thing is that you prepare it before leaving and upon arriving it is done, just in time for lunch!!

Aluminum foil tip. If you fold or roll the flat bits after you place two layers, one under and one over the top, it creates a mostly moisture tight seal. Very useful to keep moisture in meats or out of something else.

The modern rogue really shouldn't be afraid of an engine compartment. I would think in the future you should do an episode on cars, specifically the engine compartment, so you can learn exactly what everything is. You could put those chops literally anywhere around the block except the front where the serpentine belt is and they would be fine.

I've always wanted to try it for roadtrips, but it's more of an art than a science, so you kinda have to do some experimenting with your car to find out what works.

Apart from taking off the plastic covers, you could use foil the right. Foil has a shiny side and a dull side. If you put the shiny side on the outside, like in the video, heat takes longer to get through (it's reflected), where as using the dull surface on the outside allows heat in and because the shiny side is inside, it'll retain the heat better.

This week on "The Modern Rogue": the boys show you how to cook pork chops on the grill REALLY REALLY slowly!
Serious contribution: my uncle's father used to cook meals on the engine during long road trips. I'm guessing that the difference between modern engine tech and engines from 40-50 years ago make a huge difference in this method.

From what I remember, hood grilling uses a method call composite heating. In other words, meat holds onto heat relitively good, meaning that the lower the temperature, the longer you have to cook it, but the heat will eventually compound to 155, without the engine overheating.
In heinseight, I hear it does take 5-6 hours to fully cook a turkey using a hood....

The hottest exposed part of car are the exhaust components. On the engine, the exhaust manifolds (Where exhaust is piped from your engine into your exhaust pipes) are the hottest. That was where you were reading the highest temp from. Elsewhere is the catalytic converter (Muffler-looking thing in the middle of your exhaust system) since it's purpose is to take the already very hot exhaust gases and burn any remaining unburned fuel.
If you take the engine cover off, you can access the manifolds more easily. It's also not even necessary to have the cover on, it's just for aesthetics. Lastly, you can feel safe putting the chops anywhere on the engine except near moving parts like pullies, struts, or the throttle body, but especially the fan. If it were to fall into the fan, it could damage the blades and potentially puncture your radiator.

  • @Twisted_Sync

I used to make exhaust manifold burritos on road trips with my family. Mom would make and wrap all the burritos at home before we left, and we'd keep them in a cooler in the car. When we were ready to eat, we'd find a park somewhere, pull over and stick them on the manifold to heat them up. Didn't even have to drive, just let it idle. This is absolutely a valid option to cook food, but that jeep isn't the best car for it with that cover over everything.

Me and my Dad are both Jeep guys, going Offroading and Rock Crawling a lot, and when we're on a trail, before we leave, we wrap up our meals, steaks, even grilled cheeze, and stick it near the engine block with wire and such, and by the time we stop for lunch, we've got a hooooot meal. Might not be fully cooked sometimes, but its better than wasting all that propane and gas to cook it from the start. Driving on the highway wont cook your food as well as you may think. All the air rushing into your engine bay can be preventing it from heating up as fast. If you stuck your Jeep in 1st-2nd gear, and went on a trail, or even in circles like you did for about an hour or 2, you'd have been perfect. Buuuuut i know you guys dont wanna wait around 2 hours and such for filming and whatnot. Anyway, Great video guys!
