      Well, commercial fire extinguishers were terrible, and borderline dangerous. Might as well test some less standard options. Like just tossing in a can of Barbasol shaving cream. Or perhaps a can of expanding foam insulation. Frankly, I think you could make a better fire extinguisher with junk yard materials

    Those "fireballs" were pretty common in the wood fired stove days. In fact I used to see them in antique stores and estate sales from time to time. They were a blown glass ball held up with a wax mount, so if the room got too hot, it would drop, shatter and hopefully snuff the fire. If I understand it correctly though, the liquid in the old ones was horrifically toxic.

    • @SmaugTheTerrible
      @SmaugTheTerrible 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yeah I remember going to an old whaling museum or something, and they had an area on naval firefighting. They used to have containers (i believe glasses wrapped in something else) with a chemical that was probably the same thing youre describing. They were supposed to get alongside the burning ship and hurl these things onto the deck. The guide mentioned they were very effective at stopping fires on ships in the pre-fire extinguisher times but unfortunately were also very effective at killing people so they were discontinued

    Cool related fact: Modern Marvels did a really neat episode about oil well firefighting, and if I remember it right explosives have been the go-to method of extinguishing flaming oil wells since the 1920s. All ignition sources are removed beforehand, then the shockwave from the explosives puts out the fire, and then they have to cap the well before something reignites it.

    I personally feel the second one is equally as effective as just enclosing the fireplace to begin with. The whole idea is to smoother the flame. So if you have a mostly air tight fire place to begin with as would be needed to make use of that extinguisher you could just use the fire itself to create the smoke needed to smother it.

    • @straphyr
      @straphyr 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Mostly airtight still will draw in fresh air as it creates a vacuum or low pressure and keep it burning. By adding a controlled burn at the bottom near the fresh air, it steals the oxygen before it can make its way up to the fuel you want to stop burning. If you've got a whole log still burning in there, might be a bit different, might not, idk.

    • @Hubris2
      @Hubris2 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can absolutely imagine it working where you have an insert or firebox that can close and nearly seal (that's how it slows down a roaring fire anyway), but I'm not confident it would do much if you had a traditional open fireplace. The majority of the action comes from shutting off the source of air...and this burn would help use up the last of it. If you can't shut off the air, this wouldn't do much.

    • @tiggerbiggo
      @tiggerbiggo 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@straphyr looks to me like it probably has an oxidiser inside of some kind, the idea is to create a lot of "empty volume" of gas that cannot be ignited and is not oxygen. I am probably very wrong but it seems to me it is supposed to keep burning even if there is no oxygen, otherwise you'd have the same problem and just be adding fuel to the fire.

    So, how you typically fight a fire. You "take ground" one step at a time, so push the fire back, and don't allow it to come back. So with the first "flare" start at one spot, and push the fire back until you reach the other side. Don't wave it around, that's why it can spread back to the previous points. They should've had a fireman/ instructor present to explain it.

  • @Gkitchens1

    This was great. Yeah all three of those were meant for pretty tightly confined spaces like in a closet or a trash can, dumpster etc. The ball shaped one would be particularly effective in a dumpster or trashcan. In a real explosive, the explosion sucks the oxygen pit of the immediate area which helps put put a fire out. In that case. The powder just smothers it. They used to use explosives to put out oil well fires.

    Fun fact: In 2018 firefighters in Sweden had problems with a forest-fire reaching an old firing range where there was likely still ammunition laying around. Due to the danger of the fire detonating the old ammunition they could not send people close to the range to extinguish it. How did they solve this? They asked the military for help who sent bomb-planes to bomb it! It worked really well, and after that "test" they approved it as a method of stopping forest-fires.

    Once again we can't really make any comparisons because the gas was poured very differently for each test, BRIAN. Fun anyway though.

    I was wondering if you were going to test a fire globe. I saw a video out of South Korea where a company makes artistic versions of the fire globe intended to be placed around like a piece of table art until its needed and thrown at a fire.

    The Swedish airforce actually tried using fighter jets with 500lbs bombs to extiguish forest fires in hard to reach areas ion 2018. It worked fairly well. The shockwave of the bomb extionguished the fire quite effectively. In that case the fire was in a bomb testing range with lots of unexploded ordnance so the fire fighters were reluctant to go there by foot. xD Theres video footage of it on youtube.

    If you do this again in the future, you should use flammable materials instead of accelerates. It might make things a little more realistic in regards to the unconventional fire extinguishers.

    12:00 Ah yes, the exact thing you want, bombs going off when a shopping mall is on fire. It's not like that could add to the panic.

    There's a 1968 John Wayne film called 'Hellfighters' where they use explosives to extinguish oil well fires. The explosions push all the oxygen away from the fire, suffocating it. Check it ou!

    Has a fire pit. Leads petrol onto dry grass so they don't have to be in the fire pit that they've lit with sparklers a dozen times.
    Seems legit

    Using high explosives like tnt is actually a viable method to put out a fire apparently. I saw on a IMAX film they did it to stop an oil fire.

    With the ball, a fuse was needed. As said before with the liquid, any residual flame will relight it... the trail of gas relit it. I bet it’d be great in a dumpster

    you could also use c4 or any high explosive to do this, it pushes all the fuel and oxygen off the fire
