You can still change your own memory unless it's soldered to the motherboard...that was very cool to watch & suspenseful...I used to work on computers way back in the day...considered myself quite savy & then they came out with windows...in the beginning I could still work it through the dos prompt but I haven't worked on a computer since the mid 80's -Bonnie

I think the soldered memory is more likely on cheaper computers. What you can do is look at the videos of people doing the upgrade to that same model computer if you are in doubt. There are also often computers that have the same board but different other things. They are of course different models in the same numerical series. Still it is best to see if you can find your exact model. This way you won't set yourself up for disappointment. Even if it is fully loaded it is nice to be able to swap RAM. You never know when you will have a bad module and having it not soldered makes it infinitely more easy to switch it. After all, who has the skills and equipment to do it properly and not fry something? Not everyone and not me!!

Yes I watched it the whole way through to see if you messed it up. Congratulations. Nothing I have will take over 8 gigs. I still like having a DVD drive on mine. All of mine are freebies.

Thanks for doing this - was wondering how easily upgradable this laptop is.
Tip: You forgot to disconnect the battery first, and clear any static by touching the metal frame and grounding yourself. That’s why you got sparks. Not good :)

I have a windows 8 with 4GB memory and removable battery. It's time to upgrade the memory. I do not like Other later windows versions because they run updates on their own. This one I can stop that permanently and update drivers I might want separately. I like simple. Nice video:)

Should have disconnected the battery first.

ALWAYS disconnect the battery, then press the power button to discharge any capacitors!

In addition to grounding yourself, always disconnect the battery after opening the case and before poking around, and remember to reconnect before closing the case.

The sparks he saw were from not doing that, there is no telling what if any damage was done.

Hello. What type of RAM did you choose? What brand exactly? I found "Lexar" 16Gb x 2 at 3200MHz and "Fury" 16Gb x 2 at 3733 MHz which is a bit more expensive but will it be compatible. What do you think ? And so you can add another 2nd SSD... This is very useful.

Can you do a video of how to change the battery in that same laptop?

Joe, my friend has an older laptop, not sure of the brand. Can she refurbish it and update it cheaply and make it useable instead of buying a new laptop?

Do you already have an SSD in?

What rubber strips did you use to replace the original ones? Do you have a link to these?

+DW3737 I pulled them of carefully, then reused them.

I like to use a mouse with mine too. I prefer Bluetooth so I don't need a dongle hanging out waiting to aid me in destroying a USB socket.

Joe, is their anything that you don’t know about ?

did you fry the memory with the spark because you didn't remove the battery first?

      +Mark Cash Amazingly no.

    Hey Joe!
If that was DDR3, I'd have taken the 8Gig off your hands.
My laptop runs fine on 12GB, even 4k video processing, but I run Linux... The processor gets hot, the fan ramps up, but it never pages to disk.
First rule of laptop work is _remove / disconnect the battery._ Second rule is _test it before putting the case back on._ You were lucky.
Good luck upgrading an Apple anything.
I remember when blank CDR disks were £10 each, and SCSI still ruled the roost. Guess we're all getting old.
    All the best.
P.S. My Thinkpads are also of the "one screw access" variety, with a removable battery. Remember those? 😢
