- Happy Independence Day!
John Philip Sousa's "Stars & Stripes Forever" has a killer piccolo solo, & to celebrate this patriotic holiday, I attempted to play it on a bass saxophone...
In case you were wondering, the background is performed by sax quartet: soprano, alto, tenor, & baritone saxophones.
#basssax #saxophone #freedom #liberty #1776 #america #independenceday #patrioticsong #saxcover #LiberationDay
Sousa would be proud
thanks :)
So would Adolphe Sax :D
@1978sjt if I recall correctly, wasn't the bass sax the first one that Sax designed?
@@sparklymop nu-uh
@@sparklymopIt was! It was a Bass Saxophone in C
I played the baritone sax and bass sax in the 5th Army Band at Fort Sheridan Illinois,1965-1967. Could never play the bass saxaphone standing, had to be seated to play it,and the traveling case was like a coffin. What a memory.
That’s awesome, thanks for sharing your story! Yeah, these big saxophones are heavy!
I saw someone play bass sax while standing in a video. They had a piano bench under the horn.
Just think of the Brazilians in the CCB [church] with their contrabass saxophones. I understand these instruments weigh something on the order of 60 lbs.
I'd like to see some big female athlete like Charlotte Flair play a bass sax!😊❤
Reminds me of high school band. Went to watch my friends play, bari sax stands up... pulls the poccolo out of his suit pocket, nails the solo, and finishes out the piece. Jack, if you see this, you're an absolute legend.
That’s hardcore!
This is great. It makes me want to play the bari again.
Thank you!
@@saxophonistscorner, you need the contrabass saxophone for more volume of sound)))
😉😉😉
@@ACMulti100 that'd be awesome!
Play the bari again. It's the best .I'm biased btw
This isn't a bari tho.
Lovely sound. That final honk is the bomb!
thanks so much!
It just sounds SO appropriate . . . .
when none of the seniors are flautists and the only all stater plays sax and is also a memelord
🤣
OMG. I tried to learn bari sax in high school and didn't get very far - but still adore the instrument. This was amazing!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!
I just remember the guy who played piccolo in my band was like 7ft tall, 300lbs, and had a full beard
🤣
Bass sax? That's a new one for me. In the bands I was in in our schools, we have alto, tenor, and baritone saxes.
Same for me, but when I was growing up they had a sax quintet at Disneyland with a phenomenal bass saxophonists that we’d try to see anytime we went to the park.
From a piccolo player who loves the hell out of playing this part, I also love the sound quality this gives it ❤️
Thanks so much!
Yes, the sound is fascinating!!
This is awesome! Great wig too hehe
Thanks! 😄
fantastic, thanks for the funny but so well interpreted adaptation! 😀
bass sax was prominent and very important in 1920s jazz! Adrian Rollini forever!
I tried to learn bari sax in high school and just never got any good. I still absolutely adore the sound and this was amazing.
Thanks so much!
I marched with a bari for two years, 8th and 9th grades. That's why I'm only 5'3" (when the rest of my family is tall) and my arms are sooooo long! 😂 Excellent playing, bro!
ThT is fantastic! Takes a lot of skill and air to play that score on the bass sax!
Thanks!
That's not a march, that's jazz! 🥰
That was AWESOME ! Thanks for bringing a smile to my face.
Thanks! I'm so glad you liked it!!
sounds amazing! what a creative, fun and interesting concept!
Thanks, I appreciate it!
I used to play this on the Tuba and it’s just as much of a jam on bass sax! Thanks for bringing back a good memory
This video is amazing! Keep up the great videos!
Thank you so much!
I always loved this solo, this video is hilariously done as well
Thanks so much!
Sven you’re my hero!!!
Thanks Aaron! Your musicianship is an inspiration!
Absolutely beautiful.
Thank you!
Bro! Those trills are incredible for how low of a saxophone your playing! Props to you!
Thanks :)
Sounds great! Love your costume haha 😁
Thanks so much!
As someone who has played this on the piccolo I love this so much
Have this as my ring tone 🎉
@@Randumguy283 that’s awesome!
Video version is just as hip as the short! Cool video!
That’s sick
I love how you chose the piccolo solo 😂
the idea was making me laugh, I had to try it!🤣
@@saxophonistscorner I play along to it sometimes and have to improvise what part I'm playing and so when it gets to the piccolo part after I'M playing the trombone part, I just switch to that melody instead. I play over trumpet, trombone, and piccolo mostly in that---I'm an alto saxophone.
@@WitchKing-Of-Angmar that's cool! In marching band, some years ago, sax player friends of mine & I used to sometimes sneak in lines from the trombone finale part, to make each other laugh during a parade, couldn't pull off the piccolo attempt though... 🤣
@@saxophonistscorner Oh god! In marching band I would play whatever I wanted as long as it matched. My friend gave me a hard stare when he heard not the wood wind feature.
Ngl that piccolo part is 🔥 and makes the track
the editing 😹😹😹❤️
Nice!!
Thanks!
Just imagine soldiers from the 18th century marching into war with a sax instead of a picolo
For some reason, I immediately remembered the association with this performance of the "Dance of the Fairy Dragee" from the ballet The Nutcracker on two very different clarinets.)))

😉😉😉
Bravo!
I fell outa my chair, thanks!
thanks for watching :)
Look out Charlie's Got an axe!
patriotism at its finest
I’ve played the bari for I believe 5 years now and I’m in high school, that looks awesome to play, would love to have the opportunity
Used to play this on a Tuba in my band as we didn't have a piccolo player
That’s awesome! I bet it was fun?
@@saxophonistscorner Very much so. People who were our audience who knew the march were a bit surprised!
なんてかっこいいんだろう!重厚感があって素敵だ
thank you!
Playing the most famous solo on one of the highest pitched instruments on the one of the lowest pitched instrument. Wonderful.
Thanks!
Sounds great. Good luck when the Parade starts.. & We thought Bass drum had it tough.
ikr? I'm using a neckstrap on this video, & even this short 30 second video is tough to get through, lol.
Well done!
thank you!
I saw this for the contrabassoon 😂
more bass sax content!!!!!
VERY GOOD 😊😊😊
Thanks!
@@saxophonistscorner I am teacher the clarinet and saxofon, thank you very much 🙏🙏🙏.
Bro makes the bass sax look like a tenor
Thanks!
I never knew you could Polka to The Stars and Stripes For Ever.
🤣
Creating a 4th of July playlist just to add this song
I’m honored 😊
I had no idea that the young James Earl Jones was a beast on the bass sax.
lol, thanks!
Cool!
Wow so Good
Thank you :)
Now the balance has been restored.
Take that, piccolo!
🤣
100% more listenable
thanks😄
now I want to hear someone play it in the piccolo's native octave on the bari, a la leo p
Brilliant! While the sax is cool, your vid shows why the composer needs to know his instruments - how they work best for a specific tune and in concert with the rest of the orchestra or ensemble! Again - brilliant!
thanks :)
Piccolo solo aside, I'm no fan of the Adolph Sax's creation, but you actually made the barry very enjoyable for more than just punctuation. Best wishes from another bass clef denizen!
Thanks! 😃
Welp. Got a new ringtone!
😄
I think this is how it was originally written!!
Bass Sax players in Sousa's band didn't want to have to carry these heavy horns, so he had them do it on piccolo :)
Someone, please play it on the slide trombone!
Look for the University of South Alabama’s Music department TH-cam channel. If you go to the livestream archives from the spring of 2023 and find the Trombone Choir Spring Concert, it’s in there. Lots of steps to get there, but it’s there 😅
It has been done a lot of times already. Faster en better than this too. You can find it easily on TH-cam: 'stars and stripes trombone'.
LMAO I JUST PLAYED THIS
How do you play without a necks trap? That's crazy!
I had a white neckstrap on, just hidden by the costume :).
@@saxophonistscorner Or you're just really strong 🤷♂
From the highest pitched woodwind instrument to the lowest one.
I thought this was a big baritone in the video. They do sound similar. But the bass has a richer, bulkier sound rite?
Yeah
Bass is also significantly lower and in Bb
i do this with my contra clari!
this is the most american thing ever
😊
So much better! 😂😂
What Bass sax is that if you have the chance?
I’m interested in purchasing one, but don’t know any know good brands except ones of Henri Selmer Paris with the price around $30,000
I got it a few years ago from @musicmedic, they call it ‘the Wilmington’. It’s made in China, and I’m not sure how it compares to the others brands, but they set it up properly before they shipped it. I hope to one day play the Selmer, Keilwerth & Eppelsheim. What saxophone do you play currently?
can you do moanin' on the bass sax?
@@M_Miles that’s a good idea! Did you mean the Mingus one or the Art Blakey’s version?
@@saxophonistscorner mingus please!!
Where did you buy your bass sax?
I got it from @musicmedic
Do you have the sheet music? Or did you just transpose. I would love to learn on tenor.
If an elephant wrote Stars and Stripes
🤣
:D
#liberty#independence
how on earth do you hold that thing?
lol, it’s pretty heavy! I needed a chiropractor after making this video…🤣
Where can I buy this suite?
I wanna see Popeye beating up Bluto to this.
Dude!! That’s a hilarious visual!!!
He was known as the trillmeister
🤣
And those picolos thought they were all that for their solo. A bari sax would have been way more visually impressive and amusing for the audience.
Wait
low A bass sax?
No, this one is a low Bb bass sax, I have seen some low A bass saxes online, and they look cool.
That looks like a low A to me but im not the one with the sax so ok 🤷♂️
@@RAGINGTURRET536a Low A sad requires 4 holes on the side of the bell, if you look closely the bell isn’t very long and only has 3. Conclusion, it’s a Low Bb, though you can find Low G Basses if you’re interested in that
Sheet music?
Yeah… it’s definitely cooler on bass sax.
😄
That's jazz, not Sousa! 👍🍻
Fun, but half the time the trills sound like a sound effect from an old video game of a cartoon character bonking into a wall.
🤣 lol, that’s hilarious!
Man has skills...but the green screening is a waste of the technology here.
Four octaves lower
Easy getting speed out of a piccolo. Getting speed out of that Bari+ Sax is not so easy.
La versión "original" no es asi.
Lol
This sounds cursed 🤣
Genuinely terrible! Thanks!
lol, you’re welcome! Great news… I’ve got more where that came from 🤣, thanks for watching!
It's sound the Bass Saxophone
What an astute observation
sounds like german drinking music lol
lol, it does!🤣
