    Wow, just binge watched all your episodes. Good to see the excitement of taking delivery of your new boat and sharing the good and the lesser experiences.

      Thanks very much. It's been an experience I can tell you, and a lot more work that we thought, things just keep cropping up on the "to-do" list all the time with a boat

    Love the videos, keep it up! Sailing the Hanse 588 this summer, also with the in mast furler. Nice to see what not to do;)

      Thanks pal, appreciated. To be honest, I thought that the in-mast furler wouldn't require too much thinking about, but boy was I wrong. I guess once you know it then it's ok, glad it's helping you out at least. Hope it goes well with the 588, that's one big sailing boat! cheers!

    Sub 221! Your vid just popped up on TH-cam. I admire your willingness to show the mistakes. From the other comments it sounds like you broke the golden rule of sailing, "Don't sail on a schedule". Glad it all worked out with minimum destruction. So much better to learn this lesson dock side than at sea.
    Now back to see the rest of your vidoes! :)

      Thanks very much and welcome. Absolutely right we had to stick to a schedule as our parents had a flight out a few days later. We met another guy in a sailing boat from Germany and he stayed in the marina when it was blowing like hell because he had the whole summer to travel. Can't really blame him and I was jealous. Overall I think it went pretty well, abit of stress here and there but we learned a hell of a lot. Cheers, Chris and Tanja

    Upsetting to have your new boat damaged by a charter comprising the Keel. An unwanted expense. Pleased your yard did a thorough job of reinforcing and putting the Keel back in place. Don't think I could cope with the stress.
    Slab reefing with lazy jacks would be my preferred method of reefing. In mast furling in the back of my mind has the potential to jamb. A simple system which works is the best. Hoping you can enjoy trouble free sailing. Warmer climes in t shirt and shorts would be my cruising ambition. Take care.

      Thanks very much for the comment, once you know it, we haven't had a single jam in years. Although saying that it remains to be seen when we are dealing with high seas and trying to reef downwind or a similar situation

    Nice boat - just started watching your episodes. Do you mind adding some detail regarding the bobstay at 6:05 please? I'm looking at a 418 and this isn't anywhere on the options list but I want to use a code zero and I know it's recommended.
    Did you add it after delivery? Do you mind showing how it is installed internally? I assume there is some kind of chain plate/bolts on the inside to handle the load?

      Thanks very much. The bowsprit or pek as it's called in Swedish was purchased and fitted by our dealer from this company www.batsystem.se/products/pb140/ . This is not available from the factory, but I am sure someone or you can fit it quite easily. The hull on the bow, I would guess is 50mm and is very very strong so it does not need that much to support it behind. As memory goes I think there are two bolts going through the bow and there are just big washers behind, possibly there is a small plate, but this would be very easy to install, there is ok access to work there in front of the bow thruster when you take away the bottom of the front cupboard. I will try to do a video on this unit at some point. Cheers, Chris and Tanja

      You know what Shane, you are absolutely right! When I was editing this, I thought what a misserable ba*?t:_rd I am, seriously I do need to work on that! At the same time I had been working hard over the last week to make this happen and pulling an all nighter in 2 degrees doesn't help. To be honest I also found it pretty stressful sailing a new boat with teething problems and limited experience. Your honesty is appreciated though and I am usually more lively. Cheers, Chris

    Great video. We bought a 418 last year in UK. Very happy with her. Similar experience in terms of learning you had. It was all very new and scary! We went for conventional slab reefed main, small engine otherwise very similar boat. Two questions. What’s the white wheel you have in stern port side? Is it for jib furler? Also I like your bow sprit teak thing. What’s that ? Is that bespoke or an option? Keep up the videos. Great to see.

      Hi Truman, Thanks for the comment and nice that you bought a 418 also, I really love it so far. The white wheel is for the stern anchor, up here in Scandinavia mooring bow in against rocks is very common as there are no tides, so the usual way is to drop the anchor off the stern and then the white reel is for the anchor line. As for the jib furler, I do want to install a jammer as I think just wrapping it around the stern port cleat gets a little annoying, it's on the 458, not sure why they didn't do that for the 418.
      The bow sprit was a customisation from the Swedish Hanse dealer, it's for the bow in mooring in the natural harbours, it makes it so you can step off much easier and it has a ladder integrated also. Not sure if it would be that useful in the UK depending on where you are, but it's pretty essential up here.
      Thanks for the praise, I'll try to keep it interesting. cheers, Chris

    We've all learned things the hard way! Your boat looks beautiful though, and although the ride was eventful, it sounds like you had some fun times too! :) /Sophie

      Yea it was more fun than I made it out to be :) I was sleep deprived and pretty stressed sometimes. I'm sure it will only get easier.

    Seems strange that the vang goes to that upward angle when the tension is released.. was that adjusted ?

    • @SailingAurora
      @SailingAurora  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess there could be some adjustment but haven't looked into it as now we know, it hasn't been a problem

    So are you saying that you did not get a proper walk-through or orientation on all aspects of your boat, a boat that you are going to put into charter, because of the bridge timing??

    • @SailingAurora
      @SailingAurora  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Evie, I did get a walkthrough on almost every aspect of the boat, but we had a deadline to meet and there is a tonne of stuff to go through to be honest (I have only shown you a fraction of it) we were working solid for 2 days to get the boat ready. One of the last things on the list was to label the sheets and go through the do's and don'ts on the sails but then other things got in the way and all of a sudden leaving time arrived as we needed to plan for the bridge and get to Christiansø. I remember thinking, it's in-mast furling (how hard can it be?).....it was a mistake on my part but then again, they were questions that I never thought to ask at the time. I guess they thought I knew about these things also.
      It seems to me in the sailing world, everybody assumes everybody else knows everything about sailing...... and we all know assumption is the mother of all f***ups, cheers Chris

    Handover seemed a bit shabby given the cost of the yacht. OK I haven't seen the contract details so forgive me if it's all a bit prejudicial.

      Hi Chris. Completely agree with your comment. And we wish that we would have had someone that had experience with this. There are many things that we would have done differently if we had to do it over, i.e. have an extra day at the wharf and there are also things that we have discovered later that we should have captured at the wharf before signing the hand over. Cheers, Chris & Tanja

    Sorry to say but I expected all these maintenance issues.

    • @SailingAurora
      @SailingAurora  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The sail getting stuck was pure lack of experience with the system. We haven't had any issues since learning it properly. This is also a Selden rig, even the high end manufacturers are using the same in mast furler
