Thank you for creating this video my dad HMC Herb “Doc” Starmer served aboard the USS COBIA 245 during WWII, he’s the sailor the sailor climbing back on board with the big grin and shorts no shirt after saving a downed Naval Aviator. My dad was very proud of his service to our country during WWII as was all 7 of us kids. Thank you again my dad passed in 2016 and this brought back many memories I have of my dad, he was a Hospital corpsman so he was the doctor on the boat, dad worked on the sailor that died for several hours before he succumbed to his injuries, I remember my dad telling us kids all about his time on the Cobia it was the best time of his life!
Thank you for sharing your story. I drove 8 hours in one day just so my husband could tour this ship. We made it back to our motel just two minutes before it closed up for the night!😃 I was shocked at how small of room there was for people to move around. Reality looks much different then the Big Spacious looking submarines that Hollywood presents us! By the time we reached the last room of the tour I had an asthma attack and wanted out! Gee Whiz. I couldn’t last for even the duration of a non war time, relaxed, fun tour!!! What a Sacrifice Your dad and the other men made for our freedom! God Bless all of the memories of your wonderful dad and thanks for my freedom. I honor your family with heartfelt thanks and prayers that you will live out your days blessed! Much Love and Gratitude 😃❤️
We were lucky to visit the USS Cobia 20+ years ago on a weekend of one of the last WW2 reunions. In the stern torpedo room, two veterans were smoking and chatting. Our Marine vet guide reminded them that the
Smoking was not allowed. They smiled and kept on puffing! One pointed out a bunk on the port side was his… and the torpedo tube he was leaning against was his! WW2 in the Pacific was fought in underwear and flip flops, according to him. Cobia was depth charged one time and hammered into the mud on the bottom. The mud saved the hull and when the Japanese surface ship ran out and left, the skipper gently worked the Cobia loose! Australia was a great place to be home ported. Those skin tight bell bottoms with no pockets? He said they would get a jeep and some rifles and go into the bush for kangaroo. Then take them to the local butcher shop, where they wanted the meat, and have the hides tanned, then made into high boots that were dyed black like navy issue. Inside the tall boots: pockets for a whole carton of USA cigarettes! With a smile and a puff on his cigarette, he winked and said, “and you could get anything you needed for that carton!” Even the Marine vet guide laughed at that! What a memorable encounter with an American veteran!
Met one of the original crew members - C.M Stewart is 95 now and had written book about it The Blind Fight- he is still so proud of his service on the Cobia.
The USS Batfish SS310 is our resident WWII warship memorial. At one point in time I believe you could stay the night in her but her condition has deteriorated over time and due to some flooding in 2019 we almost lost her. I wish the foundation that takes care of the Batfish had the funding to restore her. I love seeing this stuff keep up the great work of protecting our history. And telling the stories of our greatest generation.
Thank you. I just finished a tour on the USS Cod. It doesn't have easy access like your boat. My inlaws are 90 and I don't think they can board the Cod. Next time they are with us for a few weeks, well plan a trip and come see your museum boat.
So how many of these do we have in the Great Lakes area? There is the USS Silversides in Muskegon Michigan, and I think there might be one over by Bay City Michigan.

We are planning to come visit after attending a Green Bay game. We’re trying to work out the time. By the way my name is Mike Cobia. The fish was named after our family According to family lore. As reliable as that is.
Very good. Great tour and history. I don't like the captions. It's the same language as the narration is totally unnecessary. It is, also, annoying. I have both volumes of "Silent Victory." I also have "I-Boat Captain." I would be willing to donate these if they are desired. That will have to wait awhile as I want to read them again before donating them.

Glad I could help Start up the Engines, It was a Joy helping Restore some parts.
When I was just 19, I served aboard the USS Sailfish, SS572 in 1963, a diesel boat out of New London, just like this one. God I loved these boats.
I enjoyed seeing the Cobia back in the 90's...Manitowoc is a beautiful town.

I got to tour this sub. It was so cramped. It amazes me how those guys did it…I wouldn’t have been able to.
We spent the night on the Cobia multiple times in boy scouts. This video brings back some GREAT memories!

You can. The museum runs a "Nooks and Crannies Tour" every so often during the off season. Just got back from one. It was a blast.
