That's the beauty of animation. You can learn all this stuff and memorize it, but its a different story implementing it. As a 3D animator he's on point. If you're truly interested in animation whether it be 2D or 3D then start with "The Animators Survival Kit" by Richard Williams. It's basically the bible for 2D/3D animation.
@matthew petta No you said they have videos prepared to go up. I’m quite certain there are 4 animators react on youtube that can be watched. 2 of them reacting to 2D animation, and 2 of them reacting to cgi. Hence why this is the 4th animators react despite being the 2nd cgi episode
@@khrashingphantom9632 Oh I understand completely. It's not like I want them to review the sex scene in Beyond the Aquila Rift. Three robots is a good choice, since it has no suggestive themes, or they could do my personal favorite, lucky 13, since not only is there no nudity or extreme gore, but it also has a beautiful mix of animation, mocap, simulation, and modeling work!
A spotlight on Genndy Tartakovsky would be cool - how he stages action, his Clone Wars run, Samurai Jack, Primal and even Hotel Transylvania - he kinda maintains his principles through various styles of animation and would be a great director to review.
Can we get a series for costume designers react. I would love to see their reaction to anything man in suit wise or animatronics and why some suits look like a man in suit and others bring the creature to life.
I'd love that too. But they've just launched this series, still doing the other 2, and basically a VFX studio. Too much content may put them behind many schedules
I went to tradeschool for a year to learn 3D modeling basics, and it turned out that my instructor for the class was one of the modelers (read: model makers) and mocap operators for FoodFight. According to him, their boss had a dog that he let run around the studio, but instead of it being a cutesy thing where the dog acted as emotional support and got along great with the team like a little mascot, he just assumed that the animators in the studio were going to babysit it while he "worked" in his office. The dog would chew everything and crap all over the place because he wasn't being taken care of, and the animators were constantly being distracted by the dog's needs. They lost probably thousands of dollars in property damage because of the dog, on top of the fact that the boss was apparently just napping or chatting with friends all day instead of actually participating with work. After two months of the BS, he finally decided to quit and had heard nothing of the project after when he moved on to other studios. There were a lot more problems with the studio than that, but that was the big one for him, since it directly affected his department. He actually had no idea that FoodFight even finished, let alone the kind of meme it became in the animator world, until I told him about it. I kind of felt bad for him, since he actually recognized some of the work he put in and obviously died a little on the inside once he saw everything in action. He started using the movie as what NOT to do, and it became one of his teaching tools throughout classes.
Awww... That's really sad. I feel bad for him, but at least he's taking it like a champ by setting it as an example for future animators. Hoping he's with a better company now, or with a better job.
That F'ing poor dog, Monkey if I remember correctly. I was the assistant Sound editor and had to stop into the production office from time to time. it was a huge dog that was cooped up in the office all day. It was so frustrated and wanted to play so bad. I started to play with it once and it didn't want to stop, got all wound up and started biting me, not in a mad crazy way just gnawing on me to play. Poor dog. I didn't know they released it either until I found it on Netflix one day. Terrible, terrible movie, but good memories.
Also Demon Slayer , call me a basic bitch all you want but it had some really good cgi , Fate/Stay Night Heavens Feel movies basically have an Unlimited budget so they would be great , Your Name or Weathering with you as well , A silent voice, Neon Genesis Evangelion I'm surprised they haven't done it yet but if i had to guess it'll probably be next , Haikyu has some amazing normal 2d animation ,and Monogatari just for its artstyle
From what I've heard with foodfight, the entiremovie literally had to be made an animated twice because the computers that had 90% of a finished movie on it were stolen. Which is one of the reasons why you have such a distinctly early to mid-2000s voice cast in a movie that came out in the early 2010s. you can even see some very distinct animation differences between the original announcement trailer and the finished movie.
I just want to say, even though the plot was a bit wonky, you and your team did a fantastic job delivering such a cinematic video game master piece. Seriously the animation and visuals were awesome
I believe Adam Savage did the math for how fast Gypsy Danger's fist most when it bangs its fist and hand together. I wanna say he said it was like 300+mph.
Really dig the breakdown for last of us 2, he gave some great insight, not just to animation, but to how body language is key to selling animation. Yes... it’s so cool! Back when I was studying acting sometimes the teacher would give us an example from animation because a) the movement and emotion was alway thought in forehand and b) it was clearer to see it and thus to analyse it. Animation is amazing and sadly so underrated...
Yeah I feel like pointing out the thing with Joel’s eyes not matching his face movement creating a disconnect was worth pointing out, but it also makes me wonder if that was a character decision to show Joel’s own emotional disconnect even when he’s trying.
Too bad the plot suck it drag the film down. I have high hope for Kubo after seeing trailer and wish it as good as Coraline but for god sake the plot so terrible .
I think you mean puppets? 😆 Muppets are quite different lol. And yeah stop motion is cool. It’s a crazy way to animate but it’s amazing. They’ve looked at some stop motion before in a few videos among other animations but I’d like if they could do a whole episode on just stop motion.

I would love to see some work from commercials! It's an often-overlooked part of the industry. It takes just as much work as cinematic pieces, but it's short form. There are also different challenges like staying on-brand and never obstructing products or trademarked characters. I work at Calabash Animation in Chicago as a compositor and ALL of our work is for commercials. Pretty much every VFX studio in Chicago works exclusively on commercials. It would be awesome to see you guys react to memorable commercials from your lives!
Charlie the Tuna (from the Starkist brand) is in the background of Foodfight. Calabash does the Starkist commercials! I didn't even notice until after I commented.
You should do an episode of 'Animators react to cartoons' where you react to "Destino" - the collaboration between SALVADOR DALI and WALT DISNEY. It actually had been left unfinished for a very long time (since they figured it was simply too complicated to animate) until they completed it quite recently with help of some CGI (So I guess you could call that episode "VFX Artists & Animators React to an Incredible Cartoon"). It's a fantastic piece of surreal animation that mixes 2d with 3d.
I'd love to see this too! Perhaps they could go into the difference between casting VAs (people who only do voice work for animation and games) and casting stage actors (the way Xenoblade Chronicles 1 and the Legacy of Kain series did).
I think an interesting movie to do an animators react to would be “Bedknobs and Broomsticks” it Mary poppins style but with the actors trying to interact with the animation. It has some cool parts like where the professor takes a real ball and puts it on a animated surface and the ball changes style. Just some neat interactions.
And the first try perfect barrel roll in TMWTGG, and the two wheel alley scene in DAF where they enter the the alley on two wheels on one side but exited the alley on the opposite side.
Having an animator react to Ghibli films would be really cool, since they have such specific types of movement and emotional expression (Ghibli tears and hair bristling etc.)
They probably got confused because they shot the 3rd and 4th vids on the same day. If you look at the 3rd video, they're all wearing the same clothes as they are here.
I love how Alex Snow explained all these scenes. Really shows how much work goes into the emotion and character design while animating. Loved this episode.
@@muffinman3052 I'm not sure they used the same technique. That was a custom rendering pipeline. I'm pretty sure that scene was a Deepfake, or something very similar. It had the same kind of slightly off feel of the face looking like a mask.

THIS. So much to react to. When I saw the trailers on TV I thought it was a mixture of live action + CGI monsters/scenery. It was only years later when I finally watched it I realized that even the 'actors' were CGI. While there's a bit of that uncanny valley quality to it, it's still pretty damn good.
I had a song placed in the movie, “Foodfight!” I don’t know the animators, but I know a little about the fiasco. They had a new proprietary software and some support from IBM. They were supposedly going to use this film to get it down and then start cranking out films. My co-writer and I are both artists and we love the old Disney movies and Pixar, and we thought this was the start of something big. But even when we saw the stills, we were horrified/anxious. I started hearing about problems - not rendering stuff until months later, and clipping happening because of it. Then Charlie Sheen had his very public breakdown and we knew it was doomed. 10 years later, the thing comes out and the quality of animation had really improved by then (but not for “Foodfight!”). The jokes were horrible 10 years earlier, now they were stale too. This thing was an abortion from the start and one of the most disappointing things that has happened to me. I heard all of this from another songwriter who heard about it from Kasanov. The thing is, I was told that Threshold had done the “destruction of Los Angeles” scene for “Terminator 3.” I was so stoked! I thought “if they could do that years earlier, some cartoon stuff would be simple. Sometimes I think that it was a real life “Producers,” - meant to fail, but that is just speculation on my part. My condolences to the animators...
Ok. I have to start by saying that I absolutely love every bit of content you guys have produced. I am an actor with a BFA in acting and you guys have opened my eyes to things I would have never even thought of thinking about when watching film. My world was turned upside down when I went to college to study acting and then you guys flipped my world on another axis by producing such amazing content (FYI I am also a professional wrestler so I am also a huge fan of your stuntmen react videos as well.) With all the formalities out of the way, you guys ask for suggestions and I have a few that have popped into my head. I would love to see you guys react to the visual effects of the M&M’s Christmas Santa Commercial because that piece is timeless however I feel like they have messed with the effects over the years but I also feel like they haven’t so I’d love to hear you guys react to it on a visual effects level. On every level, I’d love for you guys to react to TWO specific pieces. One is Deadpool 2 (honestly any part that would fit the video would be amazing whether you want to focus on the visual effects of the opening credits sequence or the opening fight scenes, I’d love to hear what you think,) and I’d also love for you guys to react to Stargate SG-1 as that has a great mix of visual effects and late 90’s-early 2000’s TV action sequences. You guys rock!
I didn’t work on food fight but I know that it was supposed to look better, however, the original footage was actually stolen somehow and they just had to redo it quickly causing it to look like that
its not like they had one single copy saved on a desktop. They would've had backups. Sounds like a convenient excuse for a very bad movie. Still doesnt excuse the bad voice acting/story

Omg! Now that he points them out, all of those scenes (Woody out of nox, Sully reacting to the incinerator...) DO have certain same energy. Sweet(land)! 👏👏👏
The guy who did motion capture for Dex Dogtective in Foodfight taught me how to do a jump kick! True story. He said the most important piece of advice he could give people was to find a good agent.
Really glad and surprised to see The Last of Us Part 2 here! Now that gate is broken down, Im trying to think of other games where the facial animation is really something else... but I keep coming back to Uncharted 4. Naughty Dog really have a knack for this right?
There are plenty of games with great facial animation and just animation in general. Some that come to mind are Ghost of Tsushima, Devil May Cry 5, Spider-Man 2018 and Spider-Man Miles Morales, God of War 2018, Resident Evil 2 remake, pretty much most of the Call of Duty games from 2014-2020 when it comes to their single player, Halo 4, Halo 5, Gears of War 4 and 5 etc. All recent Rockstar games as well.
i loved all these episodes...the best part is you guys are..putting the information very crisp and to the point..and more enjoyable to watch rather than like a lecture!
@@splat668 yeah, but even then it was kinda beautiful, which goes to show how much effort Pixar puts into their animation, even obvious cash grabs like the Cars trilogy and Toy Story 4.
VFX Question for y'all! 32 Minutes into the movie "The Vast Of Night" there is a LONG take that involves the camera leaving one person's house, going through town, going into a HS, leaving it, and then going to another character's location. It has to have some hidden cuts and whatnot, but we'd be really grateful to see a trained eye walk through it! The movie is on Amazon FYI Thanks for the work you do, either way! Happy Holidays to you and yours!
Oooooooh that'd be good! For so frickin' long Hollywood thought that *good actor = good voice actor* which we know isn't always true. I'm looking at you, Shark Tale. A break-down of what makes a voice performance good or bad definitely has enough nuance to delve into.
That's a great idea!! Here's hoping David Hayter gets to be a guest there. And here's hoping for them reviewing the range of a voice actor can do. ie: some talents often voiced similar character while some other have many different type of characters on their resume.
I’d really like to hear them talk about the phenomenal animation in Pixar’s Onward, I honestly didn’t think it was that great at first, but the more I watch it the more I like it, and I’m seeing more details in the animation that are so subtle it kind of blows me away. There’s a scene where the main character is talking to a friend of his fathers and you can actually see his cheeks flush with excitement as he learns more about his father, it was really impressive when I first noticed, and I’d love to see what the guys can spot within that movie.

@@simonhulet1192 seconded, cover the spoiler! Specifically how to avoid the uncanny valley. I'm still so disappointed in Tron for their poor attempt at Mr Bridges.

I thought he was just going to breez through the footage, but he actually gave some serious insight into the thought process of an animator and into their approach. The best guest so far. I tip my hat to you sir🤠🤠

Title- Animators react to bad and great cgi 2
r/woooooosh
You guys need to check out CGI in little nicky
I think there's 2 episodes of animators reacting to bad and great animation, making this the 4th animator's react
It's been a long year.

So the reacting to people bringing a creature to life part would basically be reacting to Doug Jones. I dig it.
I'd like to know wtf was going on in the mind of the person making that nilfgaardian trashbag armor from Witcher season 1

I had a song placed in the movie, “Foodfight!”
I don’t know the animators, but I know a little about the fiasco.
The thing is, I was told that Threshold had done the “destruction of Los Angeles” scene for “Terminator 3.”
I was so stoked! I thought “if they could do that years earlier, some cartoon stuff would be simple.
