Ted seems like he would be an excellent college professor. He's very knowledgeable about what makes good animation, character, and flow. He also didn't mind explaining concepts and ideas. He did it in a very clear and concise way. Great episode!
He is, he is so supportive, I worked with him in an animated show. He doesn't make you feel less when he checks your shots, he instead tells you stuff like "what if you try this instead, wouldn't be fun?" He was a great lead and teacher in my short time working with him.

The fight between Tai Lung and Master Shifu was absolutely amazing. The voice work, the animation, the lighting, the fight choreography. Everything about that scene is just perfect.
I never appreciated Tai Lung's voice work at the time I first saw Kung fu Panda. But dang, in retrospect, it what made him seemed so strong. Ian McShane's performance was great!
Ted might be my favourite professional guest so far. He's charismatic and feels super comfortable on the couch. He's knowledgeable and friendly and has great conversations. A lot of other guests just kind of stare off into space and nod every once in a while when either Wren or Niko are talking; but Ted actually listens and engages back. Good people skills make for great guests.
I think that's what makes it such a classic over others. It's not a traditional love story. It's about family and more than just blood, it's about found family as well. Just something anyone can relate to. “This is my family. I found it all on my own. It’s little and broken… but still good. Yeah, still good.” Makes me cry everytime
I'm so glad I watched this video today. Nimona totally flew below my radar and I'm absolutely in love with the artstyle and especially Nimona's expressions! Definitely gonna watch that very soon! :D
I love how 3D animated movies are becoming more stylized, and not just that traditional Disney realistic animation. Things like spiderverse, new puss n boots, nimona, arcane, etc are just raising the bar for what it could look like.
@thewisewolf768 yah I feel like at first they were just keeping with what was the norm, and still maybe figuring things out, till someone figured out that they could play with it and make it look however they wanted. And it's just so cool, almost gives these animations a comic book feel.
agreed, you have much more options than with higher grades of realism. you can go both ways: a little more detailed for serious scenes but also in a cartooish direction for comedy and action
This man literally animated my entire childhood plus some. I can't thank him enough for giving me happiness, good memories, and more. Not only has he inspired me in many ways to continue going, but my favorite movie of all time. Lilo & Stitch. I have the original movie still on VHS, and Cd.
This was an awesome interview. Ted's experience in both traditional and CG animation made for a really fascinating journey through his career, and I loved that you guys took the time to explain terms to us laymen. The "CHARGE " Blender short would be awesome for the VFX series. As well as *Aslan from the Chronicles of Narnia!* where you could do a comparison to the "live action" Lion King. Also at the end of second Chronicles of Narnia movie there's a big water creature, so it might be cool to see what you think about that. Maybe also, Max Schneider's Gibberish music video, the editing kinda breaks my brain there. The *last agni kai fight from ATLA* would be perfect for for the Animators React. It's so stunning! And for stuntmen react It would be cool to see you react to the duel from "Potop", it's really good sword fight
There's a lot more to Nimona that I wish you guys could see/react to. There were a few scenes that blew my mind in the detail they added. One scene was when one of the characters flipped a chess piece with his finger and how perfect the physics looked. The other is a bit blurry at the moment, but I think it's the scene where the post-it notes get ripped away from the wall or something similar. Both scenes are only a handful of frames, but the detail that went into them was exquisite and really blew me away.
He's basically an animation manifested. One of the few people who I think is genuinely happy. Reminds me of my childhood. I changed but hope he lives his life this way forever.
i think his enegery works much better when hes on his own, building some crazy stuff or figuring out how to show some mindblowing proportions. it can be a bit distracting in a group setting sometimes. (still love you wren)
I'm different, I tolerate it because I respect anyone who is able to bring energy and positiveness, but my gut reaction is to cringe from his "over reactions"
Interesting, from what i can recall Ted is the first guest who's talked about some of the areas he struggled or had to play catch up in the industry, but he clearly knows what he's doing and has a lot of ingenuity and passion which help overcome those challenges

@Gundumb_guy Look, I'll be honest... I was a little surprised to see the affection at the beginning of the film (mind you, I've grown up in, and still live in a rather conservative town). But I think I was more surprised because it's not something we see often in mainstream media. For the film, it was perfect, and it made sense (without spoiling it) because it made the stakes so much more poignant and carried so much more weight. By the end of the film it all feels so much more deserved and so much deeper. I also just absolutely loved the whole film and it had the same sort of vibe as all of my childhood films (like Lilo and Stitch). It was such a joy to watch and a bit of a tear-jerker in parts too. We need more films like this and I only wish this one got more attention and hype, because... wow! What a masterpiece! And such a stunning art style!

Crazy that he worked on over 4 movies with my Dad. Sadly he passed away back in 2016. I like to think they exchanged some critique with eachother although my father was in the surfacing department haha. Ps my dad did the whole jade palace :D
It feels like I just discovered an underrated classic by just how little I've heard of it before just recently and how eveything I hear about it is good.
never knew that about the plane section in Lilo n Stich. i also remember there was a part in GTA 3 that got cut where you fly a plane into a building, and then there was the thing where they removed the towers from the spiderman movie back then. its crazy how much stuff that affected not just irl but in media at the time. its also crazy how many things were coming out with bits about planes hitting buildings because of how fantastical and unrealistic something like that seemed at the time.
I was a huge fan of the Nimona comic and worried about the rumors of a troubled development but I absolutely ADORE the film. Some of the finest animation I've ever seen, so expressive, so ambitious, so creative. A masterpiece.
Nimona gave me that same joy I felt watching How to Train your Dragon. I didn't see trailers for either and knew nothing about them and both blew me away

I randomly watched Nimona when it first came out. Easy to enjoy when you know everyone else involved also thoroughly enjoyed making it. Highly recommend
I've just watched it now after adding it to my list based on this video. You are absolutely right in that it feels like a labour of love. The people that created it just wanted to show the world how beautiful they can make it. It even shows in the credit roll with the little animations that match each department. These people love what they do and are proud to show it!
I love when animators create iconic styles that you can immediately identify. There’s definitely some fantastic Disney animators that you just know their style so well because it’s so unique and effective.
I'm actually going to watch Nimona because of this video.. I've gotten ads about it and seen it plastered on Netflix but it never really grabbed my attention that much.. But.. I'm actually going to watch it because the art style and animation were amazing in the shots you guys showed.
It's so worth it, easily one of my top 5 movies of the year. It's got a lot of humor without being dumb, a lot of important emotional moments without being heavy, it's really something I'd recommend to just about anyone. And the voice actors are all fantastic
For another AMAZING example of eye tracing, the music video for Vision by Dreamcatcher has EVERY SINGLE SHOT lined up perfectly. Also the MV is almost entirely CG outside of the performers, it's gorgeous
For another fun example that I think they already covered in a stuntmen react video I think, is the Kingsman movies. Plenty of action/fight scenes in those movies follow that same style, but I don’t remember if it was referred to as Eye Tracing.

Taking another crack at recommending 1983s Fire and Ice!! Tons of really great shots, with some really smooth animations for the time! Totally underrated animated movie
I hope this Ted and you guys realize that these videos absolutely are inspiring people to get into animation. I've doubted myself for years but seeing these guys talk about their passion for it has really reinvigorated my excitement for it.
I'm watching that movie tonight with my kids, this was so freaking cool to watch and see how passionate he was. Heck I'm half tempted to watch it now by myself and again with them later. Keep up the great work, all of you guys.

Just watched Nimona and I'm honestly blown away. The animation, the art direction, the story, Chloe Grace Moretz's fantastic performance, it all comes together to create one of my favorite animated movies of the past decade. Brilliant.
Wowzaz! What an incredible episode. Can't believe that Lilo & Stitch was an under budget production. Never thought that would have been the case considering how great that movie was

i'll be honest i went into nimona worried it was to much of a kids movie for me to enjoy, but that ended up totally not being the case; i found the story hilarious but relatable and i was literally in tears by the finale
When I went to school for animation computers were just starting to get there so my classes were all traditional. Enter hand drawn or physical stuff like clay and sand and meat. I sometimes would like to go back to that but it's so much more work.
Just watched Nimona based on this video's recommendation. WOW! What a beautiful movie! It had such a feeling of nostalgia just like all my childhood films and an absolutely stunning art style. Even the credit roll had little animations in it that showed just how much passion went into this project. You can really tell that every single person who helped create this film truly loves what they do and were proud to show it all off in Nimona! Thank you for introducing this beautiful work of art to me!
I wouldn't mind be in an animation course with Ted as a teacher. Just imagine having a class with the guy that animated "The lion king" and "Lilo & Stitch", that would be something.
I'd love to see you guys do a breakdown of the new One Piece's effects, I think they really nailed them on that show. Contrarians will point to tiny details that might not hold up, but I don't think reality was the goal, personally. My favourite "bad take" I've seen was that the cgi on the fishmen was bad.... the fishmen wore practical prosthetics.
Please do some stuff from video games, I know it’s different but the power and direction and art of video game design is crazy. Particularly, Final Fantasy 16; The Last of Us 2; RDR2; some absolutely unbelievable work

The best part was Ted talking about stagging, using old knowledge. Like that episode where Corridor Crew talked about Citizen Kane and wondered how the creators came up with the solution of faking an audience, when it's really an old puppet theater technique.
I'd love to see you guys react to Princess and the Frog and Winnie The Pooh, the final two movies released by Disney's traditional 2D animation department before they shut it down. Along with the Tangled animated series, they are some of my favorites of all time and are often overlooked. Princess and the Frog even got blamed for the shutdown.
I've seen Nimona, and it's AMAZING. Seriously, if you haven't seen it yet, do so. The people that made it brought back some old story telling elements that places like Disney have forgotten (namely Show, Don't Tell), and the animation is incredible. Lilo and Stitch I remember the watercolours were a big part of the advertising here in Australia (not sure about the rest of the world), and I think it still looks great. For me, out of the 2 (2D and GCI), I think I prefer 2D. CGI is great, but you lose that personal touch of the lines that were clearly drawn flowing together effortlessly. My favourite CGI animated film, if I had to choose, is Coco, but my all-time favourite 2D is The Hunchback of Notre Dame, with Notes Damn being my all time favourite Animated film. The lighting, shading, colours, music, story, everything, it's just *chef's kiss* absolute perfection. Then there's Secret of Kells, Song of The Sea, and The Breadwinner, 3 underappreciated films that I feel deserve more praise
Nimona is awesome! Cool story, cool characters, cool world, so much heart and the perfect blend between classic 2D style and modern 3D animation. I want this movie on Blu-ray instead of it just living in the void of streaming were it can just disappear on moment's notice for some greedy tax writeoff.
Its so nice to finally be in an era of passionate western animation again. Spiderverse, Arcane, Nimona etc. It hadn't been quite a Dark Age, there were different good movies and shows, Kung Fu Panda, She-ra, etc, etc, but this new era of animation is so much more evocative, and a *style*. Finally getting that feeling of quality that was lost with the 2D-3D transition.
If by "emphasis" you mean, "the main character happens to be in a relationship and they kiss once" then I guess we have different meanings of the word. I've seen endless numbers of children's movies that are much more explicit and aggressive about pushing heterosexuality; it's often a major plot point even in Disney movies. @@artulyanoff

I can't recommend Nimona enough. My kids love it, so I've seen it more than a dozen times! The art and animation are absolutely gorgeous.

I just watched this video, then went to their website, signed up, and watched the extended cut. Fyi, totally worth it.
I love when animators create iconic styles that you can immediately identify. There’s definitely some fantastic Disney animators that you just know their style so well because it’s so unique and effective.
I'm actually going to watch Nimona because of this video.. I've gotten ads about it and seen it plastered on Netflix but it never really grabbed my attention that much.. But.. I'm actually going to watch it because the art style and animation were amazing in the shots you guys showed.
It's so worth it, easily one of my top 5 movies of the year. It's got a lot of humor without being dumb, a lot of important emotional moments without being heavy, it's really something I'd recommend to just about anyone. And the voice actors are all fantastic
For another AMAZING example of eye tracing, the music video for Vision by Dreamcatcher has EVERY SINGLE SHOT lined up perfectly. Also the MV is almost entirely CG outside of the performers, it's gorgeous
For another fun example that I think they already covered in a stuntmen react video I think, is the Kingsman movies. Plenty of action/fight scenes in those movies follow that same style, but I don’t remember if it was referred to as Eye Tracing.

In this world of super-fast intercut editing, I think well-planned eye tracking is more important than ever!! It's pretty clear how much a problem its absence can be when you watch super-cut-heavy action films where fight sequences just devolve into confused garble because one's eye can't follow what's going on...?

Its great! I haven't seen Spiderverse yet but of all the not Live Action movies it's the best I've seen in the last 2 maybe 3 years.
It's 100% worth the watch!

This guys passion for animation shines through so much, I love how excited he gets when explaining the behind the scenes of how things were made, always giving credit to others and being humble, I hope they bring him for more episodes

I just noticed for the first time ever that Simba’s sclera turns from yellow to white for the briefest moment there (at around 0:50).

I hope this Ted and you guys realize that these videos absolutely are inspiring people to get into animation. I've doubted myself for years but seeing these guys talk about their passion for it has really reinvigorated my excitement for it.
I'm watching that movie tonight with my kids, this was so freaking cool to watch and see how passionate he was. Heck I'm half tempted to watch it now by myself and again with them later. Keep up the great work, all of you guys.

Just watched Nimona and I'm honestly blown away. The animation, the art direction, the story, Chloe Grace Moretz's fantastic performance, it all comes together to create one of my favorite animated movies of the past decade. Brilliant.

i'll be honest i went into nimona worried it was to much of a kids movie for me to enjoy, but that ended up totally not being the case; i found the story hilarious but relatable and i was literally in tears by the finale

When I went to school for animation computers were just starting to get there so my classes were all traditional. Enter hand drawn or physical stuff like clay and sand and meat. I sometimes would like to go back to that but it's so much more work.

Just watched Nimona based on this video's recommendation. WOW! What a beautiful movie! It had such a feeling of nostalgia just like all my childhood films and an absolutely stunning art style. Even the credit roll had little animations in it that showed just how much passion went into this project. You can really tell that every single person who helped create this film truly loves what they do and were proud to show it all off in Nimona! Thank you for introducing this beautiful work of art to me!
I wouldn't mind be in an animation course with Ted as a teacher. Just imagine having a class with the guy that animated "The lion king" and "Lilo & Stitch", that would be something.

I'd love to see you guys do a breakdown of the new One Piece's effects, I think they really nailed them on that show. Contrarians will point to tiny details that might not hold up, but I don't think reality was the goal, personally.
My favourite "bad take" I've seen was that the cgi on the fishmen was bad.... the fishmen wore practical prosthetics.
Please do some stuff from video games, I know it’s different but the power and direction and art of video game design is crazy.
Particularly, Final Fantasy 16; The Last of Us 2; RDR2; some absolutely unbelievable work

The best part was Ted talking about stagging, using old knowledge. Like that episode where Corridor Crew talked about Citizen Kane and wondered how the creators came up with the solution of faking an audience, when it's really an old puppet theater technique.

I actually knew about the Plane scene from Lilo and Stitch from about 3 years ago.
I'd love to see you guys react to Princess and the Frog and Winnie The Pooh, the final two movies released by Disney's traditional 2D animation department before they shut it down. Along with the Tangled animated series, they are some of my favorites of all time and are often overlooked. Princess and the Frog even got blamed for the shutdown.

I've seen Nimona, and it's AMAZING. Seriously, if you haven't seen it yet, do so. The people that made it brought back some old story telling elements that places like Disney have forgotten (namely Show, Don't Tell), and the animation is incredible.
Lilo and Stitch I remember the watercolours were a big part of the advertising here in Australia (not sure about the rest of the world), and I think it still looks great.
For me, out of the 2 (2D and GCI), I think I prefer 2D. CGI is great, but you lose that personal touch of the lines that were clearly drawn flowing together effortlessly. My favourite CGI animated film, if I had to choose, is Coco, but my all-time favourite 2D is The Hunchback of Notre Dame, with Notes Damn being my all time favourite Animated film. The lighting, shading, colours, music, story, everything, it's just *chef's kiss* absolute perfection.
Then there's Secret of Kells, Song of The Sea, and The Breadwinner, 3 underappreciated films that I feel deserve more praise

Nimona is awesome! Cool story, cool characters, cool world, so much heart and the perfect blend between classic 2D style and modern 3D animation. I want this movie on Blu-ray instead of it just living in the void of streaming were it can just disappear on moment's notice for some greedy tax writeoff.
What a great episode!... 3/4 shots and staggered keyframes, two tricks that will definitely be used in my personal work!

Matrix also had something similar to Eye trace where the motion from e.g. a punch is carried to the next shot.

Its so nice to finally be in an era of passionate western animation again. Spiderverse, Arcane, Nimona etc. It hadn't been quite a Dark Age, there were different good movies and shows, Kung Fu Panda, She-ra, etc, etc, but this new era of animation is so much more evocative, and a *style*. Finally getting that feeling of quality that was lost with the 2D-3D transition.

The cartoon is cool, except for the emphasis on homosexuality. History would not have suffered at all without this "agenda".
If by "emphasis" you mean, "the main character happens to be in a relationship and they kiss once" then I guess we have different meanings of the word. I've seen endless numbers of children's movies that are much more explicit and aggressive about pushing heterosexuality; it's often a major plot point even in Disney movies. @@artulyanoff
