Break down the scene in Chamber of Secrets where Dobby is jumping on Harry's bed. He's a completely CGI character who's physically interacting with the real bed. He's also swinging around a turned on lamp which I would assume would a nightmare to add in the light from the lamp.
The reasons why star wars blaster bolts and some lazer type weapons actually cause explosions is because they're ionized plasma. The blasters are basically tiny and sometimes gigantic particle accelerators

So this is in reference to the question, "When will we get to the point where we hire C List actors and stamp A list faces on them." I think it could happen, but here is why I don't think it will. Back in the 1980s while everyone's favorite time traveling trilogy, Back To the Future, was hitting the theatres; something fishy was going on behind the scenes. As we all know, Cripsen Glover played George McFly in the first movie, but did you know that he didn't play George in the following movies? There was a contract dispute between production and Glover, so he separated himself from the series. Since the production had all of the prosthetics and makeup from the first movie, they actually found another actor and stamped those same prosthetics on him to get an old George McFly. This led to some HUGE lawsuits and now there is language within SAG contracts that says you cannot use prosthetics of another actor to portray the same character using a different actor. So with the growing tech that is DeepFakes, I would think this would fall under the same guidelines. For instance, let's say I want to make my own Top Gun movie. I grab my friend that looks (and is short enough lol) to play Tom Cruise and I slap a DeepFake on him, I'm effectively taking Tom Cruises's likeness and stamping it on someone else without his permission. What does everyone else think?
Oh that’s really really interesting. I assume you’d need permission from Tom Cruise or whoever to use their likeness, not unlike using a photograph of someone for an ad.
Makes sense, how far can you use someone's name, life, or likeness while they are still living, when you're profiteering off them? Shouldn't they see compensation?
Then comes the question of what you do with an individual who's no longer alive? You could ask the family, but what if they don't all agree? How much family do you need to consult? Does fair use come in to play at that point?
@@TenkoVAso I’ve really pondered this, wrote many a replies, and I’ve got nothing. I think big budget/make tons of money = need permission. Small time art stuff/TH-cam = no permission/fair use.
Funny observation: My son and I are watching Star Wars Rebels, and it's funny how when ships explode in the show, it's the same as the original trilogy...white flash, lots of smoke and sparks. Made me smile and made me think of the ot.
So all of the designs from rebels were based off the same style as the original concept art for the original trilogy which is why the star destroyers look kinda funky and they actively tried to keep it with the same effects as the original trilogy which is why the lightsabers were so thin and the lasers looked kinda funky
@@tezlaactual6582 Oh really? That's actually super interesting. I was trying to figure out why all of the proportions were off yet it still felt like "Star Wars" so that's really cool to know!

I think when we get the RTX 4090 with 128GB of VRAM we might be able to approach this tech. But in all seriousness, I'd guess about 10 yrs to get it truly believable. I think soon though, we will have AI that can render a pretty great 3d realistic head from video/lots of images. Like Niko said, 3d faces are superior as you can manage the animation and hand tweak it, the lighting is more reactive and more.

FUN FACT!: The only reason they filmed Mando's ship with an actual model was because Favreau wanted to have the model for himself. He had to justify them making it by using it in the show.
@@TheZapan99 What are you talking about? They literally say in the video that it took more time and money to develop those shots with the practical ship model than it would have if they decided to do it all in CG. Another thing I noticed with the Luke scene was the inconsistent lighting. Some shots had really nice highlights on the nose and eyes, while others had more of that generalised lighting. It's barely noticeable but it really throws you off when you realise. Great video as always!
About the young Luke sequence: The only issue I had with this VFX shot is the stiff upper lip when he talks. Did you guys notice that it barely moves? That made the character feel slightly robotic in my opinion. But in regards of being a TV show it was top notch... 👍
yeah, that was one of their complaints about the shot. That and the flat lighting and the blank stare he has, no microtwitches in his eyes or anything. All of these things make it feel fake. On a paused frame, it looks pretty great, but in motion, it's lacking a lot.
i feel like one of the tells is that even when a person isnt moving, their are still tiny movements on their face like their eyes and mouth. but the deepfake doesnt do those tiny movements.
Fun fact: Nobody in Star Wars ever refers to the energy shots as "lasers". They are blasters, basically the same type of pure energy/plasma that the light sabers are made of, and that's why they travel at visible speeds. They are not light, they emit light.
The gunner seats on the side of the clone transports do shoot in a way that looks like visible-spectrum lasers. Just a fraction of a second of a continuous beam that instantly connects with it's target, and then the gunner stops shooting to fix his aim or wait for the turret to cool down or something.
@@Thalanox Oh, yeah, those are clearly focused beams of energy that work a lot like lasers, but I was talking about all of the short-line shots that everyone shoots. Those are never referred to as lasers, but blasters.
I read head-cannon somewhere that they're called "Lasers" because high energy lasers are the main drivers generating the plasma. But let's be honest, they're "pew, pew," and what they're called or how they work is fantastically irrelevant.
Thank God. I thought I was only one that understood that. I get so tired of people complaining that lasers don't work that way. THEY AREN'T LASERS!!!!!!!!

The reasons why star wars blaster bolts and some lazer type weapons actually cause explosions is because they're ionized plasma. The blasters are basically tiny and sometimes gigantic particle accelerators
And some weapons in Star wars use gas (tibanna gas). I think the only thing that uses real lasers is the A-Wing

@@nm541 Exactly!
Small time art stuff/TH-cam = no permission/fair use.
its truly incredible how the best cgi is the cgi you never even notice.
Funny observation: My son and I are watching Star Wars Rebels, and it's funny how when ships explode in the show, it's the same as the original trilogy...white flash, lots of smoke and sparks. Made me smile and made me think of the ot.
Yeah I thought the same thing! That was a cool little hark back to the original trilogy.
So all of the designs from rebels were based off the same style as the original concept art for the original trilogy which is why the star destroyers look kinda funky and they actively tried to keep it with the same effects as the original trilogy which is why the lightsabers were so thin and the lasers looked kinda funky

I think when we get the RTX 4090 with 128GB of VRAM we might be able to approach this tech. But in all seriousness, I'd guess about 10 yrs to get it truly believable.

Considering what Favreau's given us in the last decade or so, he doesn't need to justify anything, just give it to him!
I think he was kind of joking when he said that. BUT your results may vary!
It is also non-ironically a great way to save costs, considering they opted for reflective surfaces all around the ship that take forever to render.

Another thing I noticed with the Luke scene was the inconsistent lighting. Some shots had really nice highlights on the nose and eyes, while others had more of that generalised lighting. It's barely noticeable but it really throws you off when you realise. Great video as always!
About the young Luke sequence:
The only issue I had with this VFX shot is the stiff upper lip when he talks.
Did you guys notice that it barely moves?
That made the character feel slightly robotic in my opinion.
But in regards of being a TV show it was top notch... 👍
but even before he talks you could tell its cg
yeah, that was one of their complaints about the shot. That and the flat lighting and the blank stare he has, no microtwitches in his eyes or anything. All of these things make it feel fake. On a paused frame, it looks pretty great, but in motion, it's lacking a lot.
I'm blown away by how good the CGI on tv and B movies are these days, some B movies have better special effects then blockbusters decades ago heh.

Yup. More uncanny valley skullduggery. The tech just isn't there yet and I wish effects people would admit it.
Fun fact: Nobody in Star Wars ever refers to the energy shots as "lasers". They are blasters, basically the same type of pure energy/plasma that the light sabers are made of, and that's why they travel at visible speeds. They are not light, they emit light.

Star Wars “laser” weaponry is generally all plasma bolts.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, but where do you get the plasma nuts to go with them?
I read head-cannon somewhere that they're called "Lasers" because high energy lasers are the main drivers generating the plasma. But let's be honest, they're "pew, pew," and what they're called or how they work is fantastically irrelevant.
Thank God. I thought I was only one that understood that. I get so tired of people complaining that lasers don't work that way. THEY AREN'T LASERS!!!!!!!!
