Hello Disturbed Peace! Yes! You are probably right. We regret we didn’t have more time to sell some of the items like the bison coat. It would have been fun to do it with Doug’s dad and do a deeper dive into selling it for a higher price. We hope others take that advice! Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers! M&D
Can't believe that buffalo coat! Amazing!! So true about what you THINK is valuable might not be. I had antiques I wanted to sell when we downsized... but they were impossible to get rid of. It was hard. And we had SO MUCH costume jewelry when my mom passed away. It probably would have been valuable today.
Hello Dara! Ha ha crazy about the buffalo 🦬 coat right? We actually sold it for $800. We probably could have gotten more but we were in a time crunch. And yes antiques or figurines …. My mom had Royal Doulton - they are tough to get rid of. Your told they are valuable but there isn’t a big market for them. The younger generations are not really into that stuff. Cheers! M&D
@@Track_Us_Down EXACTLY!! Kids don't want the old stuff... unless it's mid century modern furniture that's back in style 😉. Well done getting $800 for that coat!!!👍
Good to hear from you again Doug & Monique! These tips are spot on. I had to handle the process for my mom a few years back and these areas you covered were exactly the biggest challenges. Well, that was quite the coat! 100 years old, what a historic piece. However, though I'd be nice and warm, I'd be scared to walk through the woods with that on during hunting season! Thank you for sharing real live events in such a positive and real way. You guys deserve a little sweet escape.
Hello you two!! Thank you for watching and for sharing your experience. Yes - real life finds you! We couldn’t have imagined someone would have wanted that old bison coat! We hope all is well with you both. Cheers! M&D
Great advice! We have one parent who is a massive collector of stuff and they refuse to declutter the junk... so we are going to have quite the task when they pass away! It's overwhelming to think about.
Hello Dara! Thanks for watching and sharing. Yes a parent who is a collector will eventually be a lot of work. We have a relative that collects Snoopy toys…. We will also have our work cut out for us. Cheers! M&D
Thank you so much for sharing this journey. I'm going through a difficult time with my elderly parents at the moment too. My dad is 92, fell, broke a hip and now needs assisted living and he was my mom's (80) caretaker because she has dementia. I'm their POA and am having to have the hardest conversations ever with them. I'd like to add to everyone's future planning, to please please have a very detailed Advanced Medical Directive. Be as specific as you can (if I'm incontinent, or can't feed myself, etc...what course of action should your POA take). Giant hugs to both of you. What a tough time you've been through. On a lighter note - I've been BANNED from Marketplace for about 2 years. We own rental properties and someone must have been mad at some point, because I was banned without cause. So, I created an alternative Marketplace with my other email address. So far, I've evaded the Marketplace banning bots on that profile. :)
Hello Melissa! Thank you so much for watching and for sharing your experience and perspective. You make an excellent point regarding detailing advanced medical directives. Yes- such very hard conversations. We are sending you strength as you go through this. It’s sure not so much fun to talk about but it really does warrant a good conversation, as we all as grown children go through this. Thanks again for being here and we love your tip about a restart on marketplace! Have a great day! M&D
Sorry for your loss. I am dreading my fathers death likely in the near future. He lives several states away and had accumulated a lot of stuff. Luckily he has a trusts, a will and has been trying to clear out much of his stuff. I appreciate the tips on the process from someone going through it.
Hello zeitgeist888! Thank you for your condolences. We understand what you are going through. Take one day at a time. It’s such a reminder of how precious life is. We send you strength for the days to come. M&D
G’day Doug and Monique Thank you for an excellent video and great insight for down sizing (this sounds like Deja Vu) in a way. I have two suggestions that may help with downsizing that worked for me. 1. Plan you day And try to get 8hours of sleep 2. Every 4 hours take a break (and have a choice of beverage - I enjoy a beer) 3. Repeat the above I had an issue with eBay and my account was suspended temporarily I tried selling my kangaroo skin online and was kindly told that there is a ban on selling this item online in the US. Oops! I gave it away to a friend. Yes you both deserve much needed rest Cheers! Andrew and Monica
Hello Andrew and Monica! Thank you so much for watching and for sharing your experience. We love the suggestions! We are very well planned… but for sure could do better on the break part! Thanks for the reminder! Take care! Cheers! M&D
Hi Doug and Monique, nice to hear from you guys again. When I first saw the buffalo skin, I immediately thought, was that a bear at some point? 😂 happy to hear you guys are going back to the Pérola do Atlântico.
Great, great video...everything you've mentioned is good information for those who have not gone through this process. My wife and I have been through those things you've mentioned. ... being executors, going through recrords and files of parents ... and we too suggest having your things set for others when your time is up. (I found stashes of $$ in my 's grandfather's old coat pockets ...check everything!) And ... I hope your fun time for yourselves was awesome, and look forward to seeing the video on it :)
Hello Denny! Thanks so much for watching and for sharing your insight and experience. Yes - go through everything!!! People are funny creatures! We appreciate you being here. Cheers! M&D
Great to have you back here. My condolences. Grief is such a heavy process with no short cut. I am glad you have each other. Looking forward to seeing you again.
Imagine my problems with inherited belongings. In Argentina I have a version of "Mein Kampf" given to my aunt by the civil registry at her wedding 😂. You show it > problem. You want to sell it > terrible problems. I´m reluctant to burn the book. Sometimes things are mpossible to manage. Great to see you both again !!! 💪💪
Great lessons we can all benefit from learning! Making sure you downsize as you enter the 2nd half of life and having your affairs in order with everything documented for your executor is a wonderful gift everyone should try to provide. Looking forward to seeing what you have planned on your way back to Madeira!
Hello Chris! Thanks for watching and for the insightful comment. We appreciate you being here. We are looking forward to sharing next week! Cheers! M&D
Great to see you both returning to TH-cam, and with valuable advice taken from your own recent experiences. My sister and I had to do the same things with our parents, and we had to go through all these same steps. It does drive home the wisdom of planning for your own passing, to make it easier for those who follow after.
Hello Dave! Thank you so much for watching and sharing your own experience. So very true as you say the wisdom in planning. Such a tough time and it truly makes it easier if all is in place. Hope you are both doing well. Cheers! M&D
I had a good laugh, 🤣🤣 Doug!!!! an ex representative of the law, banned from Facebook, trying to sell dangerous goods, endangered species and medical equipment, oh dear you, mister! 🤣🤣🤣 Anyway, if that last picture was a clue, are you going/been to Switzerland? I'm going at the end of July to visit family, followed by a touchdown in a place we love, can you guess?
Hello Tony!! Ha ha …. Yeah not one of Doug’s finest moments!! Ha hahaha 🤣 Yes you are correct! And our guess is the beautiful island of Madeira?? Lol! Cheers! M&D
O yes ,my husband was banned from Facebook ,and it was his all life in there ,someone hacked his page ,changed name ,password ,and started posting something that was not permitted and the page was deleted without possibility of restoring it back .But it is a really good platform for advertising …but very poorly managed ,no customer care at all
Hello Evgenia! We are just seeing this comment now! Strange! Omg that’s terrible what happened to your husband. Crazy! Thanks for watching and sharing your experience. Cheers! M&D
Hi D&M, great tips! What did you do with so many old photos? I have a lot in the frame and in the draw s and in the cloud(good they are in the cloud). I hate to shred them but not sure what to do!
Hello! We had the same. We took all our photos - almost 1000 into a shop that scans them and makes digital copies. We now have them on our computer, in the cloud and on a stick. It’s tough throwing out the physical copies - that feeling of “ oh no” lasts a moment and then you realize how free you are without the physical weight of photos and albums weighing you down. The digital copies are amazing and you can print a photo or send a photo. It’s great! Thanks for watching and good luck! Cheers! M&D
@@Track_Us_Down that’s a lot of work to go through all the photos but definitely worth it. Thank you for the tip. BTW, since we are older, healthcare is important. I knew from your previous video you weren’t using private insurance. But do you have any info or research you have done on private insurance companies? Can you recommend a few or send me links? Thanks much!
Prop masters in Hollywood would have clamored for that coat. Safe journeys.
