John Legend has pipes and can sing in his own right, but this performance of his classic simply falls flat. Watched Mr. Bill Withers live 1973 performance and you can "feel" the soul. Call it generational or what, but the man sang from a different place...

I love it but I'm sure what Bill went through when he had written this song was a different time.
The vocals show that, music is written about something that happened or a state of mind when it happened.
Not saying is a bad cover but when Bill sang it was emotive. This seems to lack that same emotion. Now I'm not saying John doesn't have emotion. Just not the same. Maybe a different upbringing etc.
John Legend is fake emotion here. He also cut off Bill from Bill singing his own song. Had it just been Bill and Stevie. Wow. I like John Legend sometimes. Not this time.
