    The cruelest part of it all? The Matrix of Leadership respond well with Starscream, and not Megatron. This means that Starscream has a shot of being a leader, but not the crowd his currently in.

      @Charisma Clayton Yeah, they had a lot of fights, I think Megatron needs a long process to change his ways and realize that "those minor things" are also wrong, because it's obvious that he now regrets his actions and the long war, suffering and death he caused but understanding that he also harmed people by being abusive (either physically or verbally) is something that he will have to keep learning along the way. The writer of the comic said he would have liked to explore his relationship with Starscream but unfortunately he didn't have time and had to wrap up a lot of things up which made the ending look quite rushed sadly.

    • @nooneishere8466
      @nooneishere8466 3 ปีที่แล้ว +140

      @Charisma Clayton At that point, he was still learning how to do things the Autobot way. And let's be honest, Rodimus provoked Megatron too. However, after Megatron is left behind in the Functionist Universe and then comes back a couple of issues later, he doesn't fight with Rodimus. That's because he had spent 800 years outside of the universe where he came from and that's enough time for him how to control his anger and that he doesn't have to argue with anyone about anything. Reading post FU Megatron, it gives me the vibes of a much calmer Megatron

      As I am closely aligned to both Unicron and Primus. I would have punished Starscream for failing to lead the Decepticons. However, not to the malicious degree as Megatron. To give a bone for a chance to stand against me in the end future, that I am merciful to all.
      There are some stories where I would have chosen a different outcome. If I was in Megatron's position, then lead the hand of the redeemer rather than the executioner.
      However, unlike Megatron or Optimus. If the entire cosmos proves to be a failure at the end of Fate. No matter of the infinite futures... I will inevitably end everything in existence, and from there, I will make the final choice. To give the cosmos her life once more, or to finally end the cycle while I slumber for countless eternities. A bitter sweet ending, but one, I am willing to carry out to the very end.
      Or at least... I would do so. But what I say and what I do is kin to Unicron and Primus... Even I would construct a weapon to be the third voice in which all shall be judged. But such a weapon will require the Spark of a true Prime... One who is worthy to challenge my will.

    This made me cry twice, he just wants to have respect and to be cared about. All he gets is depression and anxiety. He's humiliated in front of everyone, he doesn't gain anyone's respect, not even his leader. The abuse verbal, emotional, physical is enough to make him lose faith, hope, and will. He does and doesn't deserve the punishment, there is so much going on in Starscream's life that brings him down, he will offline himself if it keeps up. Megatron doesn't need to bring him down if something wasn't his fault. If you hate Starscream now, you may reconsider if you think about how much Megatron brings him down and abuses him. Dude I cried too. A lot. Similar to Starscream, all I’ve ever wanted in my life is respect and love, but I only receive pain and torment from my peers. I’m so happy my high school days are now behind me. This comic with Starscream gives off the same mood of my high school experience. Pain and suffering, physically and emotionally, despite trying my best to fit in. I never had the pleasure of a first girlfriend. I had only one friend, who I vowed to protect with my life. Although uncommon, whenever something bad happened to them, whether it be physically or mentally, I felt tremendous guilt, even if it was outside of my control. I felt like I’ve failed them, and would be crushed with guilt and self-blame for days, sometimes even weeks. Even now after high school, I feel horrible about my experiences, kind of a form of PTSD if that makes any sense. After seeing just how hard everyday life can be, I’ve almost completely lost faith in living a happy life, and have lost hope that things will get better. Sometimes, I barely had any energy or motivation to get out of bed. Half the nights I cried myself to sleep. I adopted the mindset of do what needs to be done and nothing more, and became somewhat of an autonomous machine. And all this went on for FOUR YEARS. If you read this 11 months later, thank you. Even though you’re just an internet stranger, it sometimes helps me to unload my life story on someone who can understand or connect with the experiences I’ve gone through.

      When doing less screw-ups or unsubordination, Megatron usually just punches or smacks him once, or just yells at him without physically hurting him.

    The most cruel part? Starscream did what he was supposed to. He was second in command, so when Megatron ‘died’ he had to step up to lead the decepticons when nobody else would. He tried his hardest to keep them in healthy and well cared for but he couldn’t. The matrix was behaving good with Starscream so he was capable of being a leader, he was just leading the wrong team. Starscream got depressed in his time as leader, but he pushed on for the decepticon cause. Then Megatron proceeds to beat down Starscream because he did what he was supposed to, while making the others watch?
    I’ve never really liked Starscream, but now I feel bad. He tried his absolute hardest, went through mental and physical torture and it still wasn’t enough for Megatron. Starscream asked for Megatron to k1ll him, for this hell to end, but Megatron kept him alive to use him as an example and as a way to calm stress by beating.
    Starscream never had anyone who truly cared in his life..

    IDW really showed the trauma Starscream went through quite well. Like how when he came to rescue Windblade in her mind while she was possessed by Vigilem. And how, despite the years, his greatest fear was still being punished by Megatron, which Vigilem takes full advantage of by morphing his body to look like megatron. Just goes to show how the writers were really keen on showing the mental instability of beings who have fought in a horrible war for over 4 million years

      @Tea Girl, That's because when it comes to comics, there's more time to do stuff. Comics tend to run for a long time, and as a result, there's more time to make characters more fleshed out. Even in G1, Optimus AND Starscream were basically the most fleshed out characters. Starscream is my favorite Transformer, but I would definitely say that IDW Starscream is my favorite version of him. I read this comic, and I was genuinely surprised at Starscream, because he may be evil, but one thing that no one can deny, is that everytime he fails, he always gets back up and tries again, but with this, he was giving up, and that shocked me.

    I think the worst part of all of Starscream's plight here isn't that the Decepticons weren't following him. Their dire straights weren't even Starscream's Fault. They were diverting all their resources to rebuild Megatron, and the ungrateful bastard decides to torment the one person who kept him and the most Decepticons alive. Had they scrapped Megatron when they recovered him, I think Starscream would've actually been able to turn the situation around. But instead, everyone knew Megatron would be back, they were starving themselves so they could build him. Look at Megatron's body compared to every other Decepticon. He's pristine, clean, perfect and running at full power. Starscream? He's broken, rusting, visible cracks all over his head. He didn't even spare himself the resources or care. It literally all went to Megatron.
    And that much is just wasted on Megatron. I honestly think had their positions been flipped, and Megatron HAD to keep someone terminal on life support and rebuild them a new better body, he'd have failed to complete the objectives Starscream managed to succeed at. Diverting almost every resource to rebuilding a leader who had more influence than him, Megatron would've forced the Decepticons to listen, he'd have done corporal punishment just like he did to Starscream, and then what? Fix the damage he dealt with his beatings? Not enough resources to go around for every punishment. Go raiding for the supplies you desperately need? With lack of Energon and parts, they couldn't go very far. Every injury, every bit of scrap blown off a Decepticon isn't coming back, those resources are claimed by the reconstruction process. The Decepticon Army would've started dissolving, either due to lethal consequences of Megatron's leadership style or desertion.
    Kinda wish there was a What-if style side story where after getting Megatron back to base, upon finding out just how much it would cost for them to fix him, Starscream just blasts him in the face killing him. See how much better the Decepticons fare then.

    I Have to say that in full context this story is depressing & painful to read, Even with all the bad things IDW Screamer did, he did NOT deserve this kind of punishment, that scene where he begs Megatron to kill him hits really hard.
    To sumarize, IDW comics had so much rewatchable material.

  • @clogs4956
    @clogs4956 3 ปีที่แล้ว +136

    There have been instances where Starscream has revealed something about how he’s alone, disrespected and unable to reach out for help, because Megatron will inevitably beat him down emotionally and physically. He expects to be punished even when he’s undeserving of it and triggers Megatron to get the incident over with. He acts out, trying to be noticed, even if being noticed gets him slagged (by Autobots or other Decepticons as well as Megatron).
    We also get to see that, over the vorns, Starscream’s initial hero worship has been twisted by fear and resentment, but he’s unable to flee; he’s burnt too many bridges...
    These are all documented, but lesser known, abuse victim behaviours.
    This one issue really, really shook me and proved that comics have truly grown up. It’s a compact example of both sides in an abusive relationship and viscerally more powerful than the confrontation Megatron engineers in the Armada cartoon. I couldn’t read it in one sitting and, yes, I wept.
    What makes it all the more painful is the knowledge that Starscream has sacrificed everything to bring Megatron back online in the new, more powerful body he uses to wreck his already beaten SIC.
    You can find more information on abuse on reputable internet sites and books.

      Something similar comes in a line from Starscream in Transformers: Armada; to Megatron, Starscream says, "I tried to gain favor from you, but nothing I did was ever good enough." I and many others have probably felt the same way or said this to someone in our own lives, whether a loved one, or our boss, or someone else important to us. The characterizations of Starscream that I have most enjoyed (or even gravitated to) are those that embrace the very human emotions that come from intense loyalty. Starscream wanted someone to recognize him, to look at him and see someone dependable, to see the things he has spent his life trying to accomplish; being constantly shot down without remorse builds a self-fulfilling prophecy of bungling and failure, where he knows he is expected to fail, so he subconsciously enters into an engagement expecting to fail too. When you know it's impossible to succeed, not because you actually can't succeed, but because it doesn't matter to the person you look to for acceptance whether you succeed or not, life starts to lose meaning, as can be seen in IDW's Starscream in this particular issue.
      Perhaps the saddest part was that, even in the moments where he opened fire on Megatron, it was likely rooted in his very loyalty to him: 'Can't you see what condition I'm in? How could you be so cruel?'
      Starscream needs a hug.

      I agree. Megatron was given a redemption arc and I'm not saying he shouldn't have one, but Megatron is the cause of Starscream becoming what he became. Starscream deserves redemption and love too. He never wanted the war and was always saying how he thought it was a long drawn out conflict, saying things like "If I was in charge the war would've been over eons ago." But Megatron is so wrapped up in his own bitterness, resentment, and hatred of how he was treated as a miner and his determination to conquer the universe that he has completely ignored the damage that he's done emotionally, physically, and psychologically to Starscream. He needs to pay it forward to Starscream in some way.

    I was watching/listening to a dub of this comic the other day and I just couldn't do it, I couldn't finish it cause it was too emotional and painful to me. Starscream is relateable to me in ways that, even though I am a hardcore Autobot fan, no Autobot is. I can find pieces of me in many Autobots, but Starscream's loneliness, trauma and desire to be loved just digs at me deeply. I relate on a personal level, rather than seeing personality traits similar to my own. His speech to Bumblebee when the ghost mech asks him why it's so important for him to be alone just hit me hard. I could make almost the exact same speech, sans the part saying that it was specifically Megatron more often than not and, well, the beating for me is more metaphorical for the most part than literally, but yeah.
    There have been iterations of Starscream I didn't like, but I've always been kinda drawn to him, had some sort of understanding of him that others I talked to never seemed to have--which made me feel like I had to hide the fact I liked him at all. After getting into the IDW comics a bit, I am understanding now what has drawn me to him so many times. I am naturally empathetic and sympathetic, so Starscream's story just pulls at my heartstrings, pretty heavily since I relate to him so much.

My mother I think always got a rush out of hurting me emotionally, it seemed to give her pleasure since she couldn’t physically hurt me. Had I been this starscream I probably would have left the leading to soundwave and just vanished. In real life I did just that and tried to put as much distance between my mother and myself as I could. It’s been over 20 years since I did that and this has dredged up memories I thought forgotten. I would have written this as Starscream just left and nobody ever saw him again. Maybe he found what he was looking for somewhere out there in the infinite void

I answered; "No. She had her second chance." I had no hatred in my heart for her. But I know she cared about me enough to know i was safe and well raised with my grandparents. Strangely, the night before I watched this video I had a dream about TP Starscream. He helped the autobits defeat Unicron and actually made friends with them. But as they were going their separate ways with starscream leaving to be on his own, the auto bots accepted him and he left to join team Prime. With this sad story, I wish more than ever for Starscream to be appreciated.

    Wasn’t expecting to traumadump in the comments of a Transformers video, but I dunno. I feel like a kindred spirit to Starscream, and maybe somebody here needs to read a story like this.
    A very, very long time ago, I was abused by someone who I was supposed to look up to, someone who was supposed to guide me and encourage me. I was too young to understand, too young to say no, too young to realize what was happening. I was abused and manipulated and treated like some kind of toy or a game. Those memories stuck with me as I grew. They felt wrong, but my weak, young mind didn’t know _why._ When I got older, of course, I understood. I remembered everything. And it was the most humiliating feeling I’ve ever known. Remembering how pathetic and defenseless I was, allowing myself to be used in such a disgusting way. Thinking about it makes my skin crawl. I would rather die than let it happen to me again.
    I understand his pain. I wasn’t the only one whom I failed. Time and time again I’d had the opportunity to speak up, to stand up for us both and stop what was happening, but I didn’t. I was too scared, too ashamed and most of all, too cowardly. I couldn’t protect myself nor the other. I’m still not over it. I still regret every moment of those memories, and the things that happened to make them.
    There’s no greater punishment than knowing you failed, that you allowed something humiliating and horrifying to happen, and knowing that those memories will never leave you.

    These are types of story lines I enjoy. When there is empathy for a villain. Where a character exposes themself to the reader of their darkest thoughts. It makes a character more characteristicly human. Even though we are supposed to hate the villain we grow to understand of whom they are, and what drives them.

    Finally some talk about IDW Starscream
    My god i want to Dropkick megatron into a pool of acid for this
    This comic really hit home as an Abuse victim myself and Starscream is my comfort character.
    (Spoilers) The worst thing about IDW Starscream is that because he's so traumatized from Megatron, he developed unhealthy coping mechanisms and unsavory traits such as lying, manipulation, trust issues, lack of self confidence and aggression. All of which are real trauma responses from abuse. (Especially Lying and manipulation are abuse survival tactics!) Starscream can't do anything about them on his own anymore because he's just broken beyond repair and he *knows* it. So he shuts himself off from other people and becomes apathetic. Especially the comics from Robots in Disguise has shown Starscream talking to himself, saying that everyone hates him, wants him dead and it's why he's so defensive. Why care about other people anymore when everyone would celebrate your death?
    In Till all are one, Bumblebee snaps at Starscream after he struggled with his leadership as ruler of Cybertron after consciously making bad decisions just so he could feel better and shouts "Why is it so important for you to be alone?" And Starscream's response is just heartbreaking. "Because I AM alone. Because the nanosecond i forget that, Life, most often in the shape of MEGATRON, beat the truth back into me! Literally!"
    So thoughout the later comics of IDW Starscream is hated, scrutunized, gets no support, no patience from other people, no one to listen to, no friends, essentially because he's traumatized from Megatron. MEGATRON DURING MTMTE ON THE OTHER HAND.. Gets a shipful of people's support and sympathy, Therapy, Many second chances and people who listen to what he has to say. All because Megatron had to play victim and pretended he actually cared about all the people he hurt or killed during the war. (He doesn't.)
    Megatron gets a happy ending, Starscream dies having never lived a happy life and i am giving the writers of IDW a big fat middle finger for that one.
    GIVE ABUSE VICTIMS A HAPPY ENDING. JUST BECAUSE IT'S STARSCREAM DOESN'T MEAN THAT HE'S INCAPEABLE OF BEING GOOD OR THAT HE DOESN'T DESERVE SUPPORT.

    • @BackwardsMMA
      @BackwardsMMA 3 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Everyone in MTMTE wanted to murder megatron lmao, he absolutely does regret what he did, he was fighting off ghosts of past just to survive and was willing to commit suicide to repent for what he did.
      megatron is a villain, he doesn’t care about the effects of abuse, he has murdered with a smile on his face and beating starscream is the least of his worries, if anything it’s a stress reliever.
      This isn’t a story about an abuse victim, starscream, finally getting one last chance at a happy ending, being able to escape his abuser, this is a story about a tyrannical ruler, Megatron, finding his army in the worst shape imaginable, and finding out starscream is responsible for it, this is Megatron rising to the top once more through whatever savage, ruthless, and cruel ways he knows how. He is a murderer and war criminal and is lucky to be alive. He willingly endangered his own life (he assumed he was going to die from the event actually) just so he could save his crew and fought alongside his arch-nemesis to save all of creation twice. I’m not here to shit on starscream, but don’t downplay megatron either.

      @@BackwardsMMA Megatron being a villain doesn't justify IDW's Treatment towards Starscream because frankly, it's just one big fuck you to abuse survivors. When as an abuse survivor you see a fictional character you can relate to because you know their pain, you would want this character to thrive and be happy. To experience joy that has been robbed from your own life. And when that very same character gets treated like shit essentially for being an abuse survivor, you yourself begin to feel like shit too. Spotlight megatron has been extremely triggering and hard to any trauma/abuse victim who read it and to know that Starscream doesn't get a good ending leaves an impression. Fiction does affect reality and for us it feels like we don't deserve a good ending either. Defend Megatron all you want (even though that's a braindead thing to do) but consider how other people feel towards the treatment of a character that feels personal to so many individuals.

    • @BackwardsMMA
      @BackwardsMMA 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I am truly sorry to you an anyone else who experienced what you have, but saying that the writers are trying to paint a negative picture on abuse victims because one of the most evil dude's in the the fictional universe beat up another fictional dude who failed him...there are a couple flaws to that logic. Your personal views on a fictional character don't affect mine, I think megatron, especially IDW Megatron, is the shit (Animated is the best tho), this comic was hilarious to me in retrospect to his character. I personally think Megatron should've died in the galvatron saga, and not do the whole "redemption arc", he's never been that type of character to me. Also, I don't know why you came into a comic about war and bloodshed expecting the character in arguably the worst position in the war to come out with a sunshine and rainbows happy ending. War sucks, war isn't happy, and in war, sometimes people don't get happy endings, and that's cruel, but it's the way of the world. I'm not defending Megatron, he's a war criminal, I cant defend that, but to say he got off scott free would be plain wrong.
      Also, don't call me braindead if you want me to consider how other people feel.

      @Dariel Rojas That's one of the reasons why I love IDW.
      Comics are often much more mature and darker than the shows they share a franchise with. I mean, just look at the Pokémon Manga, there are instances of Pokémon actually getting killed, there was a time where a Charmeleon cut an Arbok's head off, and another time when a Poliwhirl got impaled through its stomach.
      Like damn, comics can be SO mature, even if the show it shares a franchise with is lighthearted and for kids. I love it!

    IDW comics have so many flaws but they can do great emotional scenes when they want to. One thing I always disliked about some original versions of Starscream is how sleazy and dishonorable he was, but other versions of him like Armada and even Prime did his good side justice. His relationship with Megatron has great depth that should always be explored more.

    Because I love IDW so much, I'm leaving a second comment.
    Starscream is, like Megatron and Ratchet, a perfect representation of what IDW2005's Transformers run represents.
    Starscream isn't some body, and a name used to sell toys, he isn't a Flanderized husk of pervious iterations.
    Starscream is what makes IDW great.
    He is a person.
    Having been beaten, and hurt. Having been redeemed and praised.
    He is a person with a life that is told throughout IDW's run. And what is possibly the most beautiful thing in that universe is his final appearance. Where he states that its okay if he's not remembered for being a savior. That he's just happy being remembered.

    "Tired of the bone-deep chill of losing, Starscream? Then stand WITH me"
    I think that says everything about Megatron and Starscream. That and "... I almost mean it".
    Megatron feels as though Starscream needs him. He somewhat admires the viciousness and cunning that Starscream holds within him. He sees the potential he holds, maybe even fears it. He would never kill Starscream because deep down he needs him too. But as the brutal warlord he is, he can't stand the idea of Starscreams aspirations blossoming, so he keeps him in check, feeding his own toxic lust for cruelty that truly makes him evil rather than the liberator he claims to be. I think the war truly warped them both.
