    hey man, great video as always! i had a question, it's said that you need japanese skills to compensate for your lack of technical skills and vice versa. what do you think someone who plans to work in japan should keep as their main focus (i'm a sophomore btw)? initially i'd been very serious about brushing up my japanese and letting my dev skills remain average, but i realized that wouldn't land me a job that pays above the median so now i'm going all in with the technical side of things, and only doing as much japanese as i have time for. what would you say?

    • @DevinJapan
      @DevinJapan  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Focus on your dev skills and getting an internship or more than one before graduating. Learn basic Japanese. When you move to Japan you can learn Japanese easily.

    Hello!
    Do I have to send my CV directly to the company or do I have to go through a recruiting agent? What is the best solution, please?.
    what is the salary of frontend developer and backend developer, please?
    is there a site to contact Japanese startup, please?
    Thank you for your time and response :)

    • @DevinJapan
      @DevinJapan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      You can do either and actually you should do both. Contact a lot of recruiters but also apply directly to specific companies you are interested in because recruiters won't cover all companies.
      Backend developers are in demand and generally make more than front end developers. Salaries vary, check out a website called "opensalary"
      For startups look up at "justa" or "wantedly"

    What about writing a resume in Japanese (not English)? Unlike foreign companies, the template is more or less expected to be in a standard format for Japanese companies?

    • @DevinJapan
      @DevinJapan  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. I hate it. The focus of this channel is international companies or companies that don't expect much japanese skill if at all. Because those on average will be a much better experience than working for a Japanese company.

    I've been looking for Flutter jobs in Japan, and most of the opportunities are for Senior developers. What you have to say about Flutter community and demand growth in Japan? Do i probably searched something wrong? Thank you!

    • @DevinJapan
      @DevinJapan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Flutter is currently not popular here and Japan is always behind the curve in tech stacks. If its popular elsewhere give it a year or two for Japan to catchup.

    • @DevinJapan
      @DevinJapan  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could get a job here in that field in companies like Sony. But it's more narrow and less positions than developer job and also you would need to become fairly fluent in Japanese to work in a Japanese company. AFAIK most English tech startups don't deal with hardware here. As you are a first year you probably are only doing general courses like physics and math and it might not be too late to pivot to computer science or computer engineering.

    • @DevinJapan

      Of course. React is very much in demand. It's best you try to get an internship first at a good company in your country or even in Japan. New grad salary isn't very high in Japan but if you come after getting some experience you can get a much better starting salary. I recommend applying to FAANG companies of course but also in Japan some big tech companies usually hire interns like Indeed, Mercari, Sony, Rakuten e.t.c

    A few Questions for you:
    1) If I have 1-2 iOS apps in the App Store, will that increase my chances of getting a job in Japan?
    2) I’ve been thinking a lot about switching from learning from Swift to Kotlin, since you mentioned that Android devs are more in demand, but the only reason I’m hesitating is because I kind of want to master swift. So do you think I should make the switch to Kotlin or keep mastering Swift and apply for jobs without any Java related projects?

    • @DevinJapan
      @DevinJapan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      1) Yes. Please do that if you have the time. It helps because it shows your interest in the field. Also make sure you have your source code available for them when they ask. Maybe link to it if it's in a public repo or offer to provider access. It's a very good discussion area during interviews.
      2) If you are already good at Swift it's better to focus on that and improve your skill in it. There are many positions for Swift devs as well.

    Hi!
    I've visited Japan for 2 weeks on March of this year and now I wanna go back to work and live. I'm a developer with 5 years of experience focused on web backend with experience mostly on PHP but now I'm doing small projects with NodeJS, Ruby and doing DevOps and SRE courses. With the pandemic right now I'm waiting for the countries to open the frontier to start applying and move as soon as possible. Right now I'm unemployed, there are chances for a guy like me to get a work in Japan?

    • @DevinJapan
      @DevinJapan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yea they are opening borders soon for residents. It's a slow process. Some companies support you working remotely until then if they hire you so go ahead and apply. Though I recommend you work im your country for a while and build some skills in something other than PHP first.

      @@DevinJapan Yes, I could apply right now to a company but I don't feel so confident to do so, by now I'm doing small projects to fill my portfolio and seeking for a job in my country, the problem is than in Chile (country where I'm from and currently living) is more difficult to find a job in IT because there are a rise in the unemployment (by the pandemic and the protests)
