In this video I talk about some of the cons of living in Japan.
It's far from an exhaustive list of the cons in Japan but just some of the things you should factor into your decision to move here, whether you are recently accepted in the jet program(jet programme) or planning to work in tech.
I personally love living in Japan despite it's shortfalls but there are many people who end up leaving within a few years because they can't handle some things.

I'm Japanese, and thank you for being honest and tell the negative aspects of Japan. I've seen some people come to Japan thinking it's a perfect place, and found out there are negative things and leave Japan with hatred feelings :( It's so sad to see that as Japanese.
There are so many beautiful things about Japan but it's the reason why there are completely opposite negative sides.
For example, people are so nice they always think about other people's feeling first, and it makes Japan so clean and comfortable and peaceful to live. Then on the other hand, some people struggle to express themselves and stressed by so many things to consider before doing something.. But I still love Japan so much. ^^

It depends, but as my experiment, hospitality industry like a electric shop or restaurants, are much more over time work, you could get extra salary tho.
1)There is no perfect country or perfect anything in this life. People should stop being delusional.
2) Not every country is obligated to prepare English subtitles and translation for things. Good if they do, but it is up to you to learn how to get by and not blame others.
3) Anyplace that has humans will have crime.
4) When in Rome, do as the Romans do. Not rocket science.
(Imagine if I am a guest to your house for a week, and I start asking you to change the furniture and wall paint just because I don't like it. Would you do it?)
People visit and go live in other countries because they want to experience a different life and culture (regardless good or bad). What's the point of traveling if the other country is an exact copy of my hometown and country. Might as well go to the next town and call it "visiting another country".

I don't know why anyone expects to find English signs/subtitles/menus/websites/etc in a country where English is not an official language. Why not expect French or German, Spanish...

Tell this to English people living in Spain. Or almost any westerner in South and South East Asia who gets positively angry if a menu or something isn't in English. Its only for Japan that people get all "ooh...its their country, when in Rome" - you all don't even do it when you actually go to Rome!
@@WitheredWithin It is called "General House Rules". TH-cam is generally regarded as an English platform (mainly). Title is to give you a general sense of what the video is about, they are not required to make an English video or provide English subtitles (It could be also because of their targeted audience or other reasons). The same goes for any other literature out there, you will find a heap load of topics written is different language.

Seems like you may not have been focusing on the full video. If you have any tattoos you will not be able to do most traditional things like bath houses and such. Individualism is frowned upon, many females who move there end up leaving due to the constant groping, up skirt shots, etc. The living spaces have been described as less than ideal from many. I heard lots of stories about how you should be ready to see very intense porn in hotels, sex shops and sometimes convenience stores. "The very obvious passive and casual racism, prejudice, discrimination, and xenophobia that no one realizes, points out, questions, or challenges was hard to deal with" - message from my friend who lived there for yrs.

I'm from the Philippines and I keep forgetting that some parts of the world don't experience typhoons on a regular basis. We also experience earthquakes too, though not as frequent as Japan thankfully.
Yea. As much as I like Japan I have considered Singapore as another option. It's kind of a tiny country though and might run out of things to do. Also the heat >_

The groping women and taking pictures of women happen ALOT in the US. I'm a teen and i've seen probably over 50 people take pictures of me w/o consent.

@@vinbladi. possibly they will move when they're 18/19 so they can start college abroad. as to why people chose to study abroad, maybe it's because they really like the country and want to do college there? or maybe because their countries education system is worse? there's tons of reasons why

Everyone in the comments are saying that japan is not that bad, but why is everyone gliding away from the sexual assault issues?
Because they want to keep a certain image of Japan and may downplay sex crimes in general.
Obviously people should have some grasp on the Japanese language, like study, take some classes before moving there. Study the culture of Japan, watch videos of Japan, before moving there. Not just up and moving to Japan when you don't know anything about it. Yes some people have up and moved to Japan, without knowing anything about the country, culture and language. But it makes it easier if you know some things before moving there.

As always great video. I have a question.
For a foreign iOS Dev who’d like to work in Japan which of the below plan in your opinion works the best:
1) Pass JLPT N1, Move to Japan as a Language student (Just for the 6-Month Visa), apply for Jobs, change student visa to work visa.
2) Pass JLPT N1, Apply for jobs in my country through emails, then move once accepted
3) Pass JLPT N1, Visit Japan as a tourist, apply for jobs, change tourist visa to Work visa.
Btw Working Holiday visa isn’t a thing for my country, so for (1) the only reason I’d apply to a language school is to just get the 6 Month ~ 1 year visa, the use the time to get a job. That’s the plan I’m leaning more towards even though it’s pricey :’(

Normally I would recommend you try to get a job before coming. That's definitely the better option but currently because of covid19 it's not as realistic because with the borders closed the open positions for people not already in Japan is limited.
As mentioned before you don't NEED to do JLPT but it's certainly not a bad thing to do. It would be easier to pass after living here as language immersion is the best way to learn.
That said in normal circumstances I recommend option 2 but in current circumstances i recommend a mix of option 1 and 2. You will have a lot of fun here experiencing life as a student. Try to get into a language program at a university and you can make a lot of cool friends.
Try to get a job as a priority but if you can't it's probably because of lack of hiring from covid19 so it might be a good option to apply for schools.

Thank you for covering this part of Japan we all need to hear. How much Japanese do you know? If I want to move there what is minimum level of Japanese should I know?
I speak conversational japanese. I can read and write Hiragana and around 1000 most commonly used Kanji. The thing about reading though, a lot of the Kanji characters have multiple readings so even if you learn them you will still see them in contexts that you don't understand until you learn it. Basically I would recommend learning hiragana/katakana before you come. When you come go to language exchanges to learn conversational japanese and study grammar on your own. Also learn like top 100 most commonly used kanji to start with.
There's no rush to learn if you get a job that doesn't require any Japanese skill.
You don't need to know Japanese, there are tons of people living in Japan that don't know Japanese. Things will be easier if you know some level of Japanese.

hmmm, to be honest i think it's better to move here without making an informed decision and just learn about the difficulties yourself. Not only does that help you grow, but it also doesn't make you come to Japan already thinking about the negative aspects. Meh, that's just my opinion tho.
I felt like these weren't that bad....I'm surprised about them being so strict about downloading anime in other languages. In China you have to work around the system a lot but it is kind of expected and overlooked.
The deodorant situation has something to do with their genes apparently most east Asians don't sweat much or they do sweat but don't smell
You can buy deodorant at every drugstore in Japan and many supermarkets have it.
You could've come up with a better list than this - this one sounded more like a whiny person. I can basically switch what you said to say a Chinese/Japanese/French who goes to America/Australia/UK/Canada. Do they have Chinese/Japanese/French subtitles in normal TV/Websites? Some may have, some no. If I go to a theme park/Disney Park, will the signs/shows be in other languagues? Most of the stuff they want from back home will probably have to be ordered online too.
Anyone who thinks about moving to Japan without learning Japanese language first is a dummy, and deserves all the negatives caused by that.
Maybe they use the crystal rock deodorant in Japan? I'm from the UK and I have been using them for years (you need to wet them first). They are a healthy alternative from the usual deodorants.
You can buy deodorant at many places in Japan like most convenience stores, drugstores, larger supermarkets. It is just the smaller grocery stores that don't have it but they are usually next to drugstores.
I have never had a problem findding it.

There is no best roadmap. Here's one idea. Develop something in various technologies such as making a web app using ReactJS+NodeJS, or make a mobile app using Android, Flutter, iOS. Make something you would use or someone you know would use. Then release this application. Learn from it. Use the experience as material to talk about in your interviews as well as something to put under projects section of resume. Then apply to companies using that technology. Startup is a good option as you can learn a lot at startups fast.
Alternatively you could go to university for computer science or take a Coding Bootcamp.
I think I would like living in rural Japan much better. Does anyone have info on moving to rural Japan? I've worked and lived in NYC, Chicago, Seattle, Portland, San Diego, Austin, the US Midwest and the EU. However, I'm at a time in my life where I'd rather live in a small town it or village.

I disagree with the website only in japanese. If you are foreigner who moved to japan, you should be able to speak, write, and understand the native language. Japanese dont have to cater to your preferences.
This happens everywhere.
Yet when people from Japan and other countries some to America, America accommodates them in whatever way such as ESL classes etc. I will visit but not stay, its too much of an inconvenience.
From my point of view, all the cons you mentioned are just fair enough. We also have our own set of rules that we impose on visitors. Except for that "chikkan" thing, that some serious issues

Do you know how much people generally get from government + industry nenkin system when they retire? How common is it for people to use 401k style retirement planning?
Nenkin is unreliable for sure given currently there are more people at retirement age then ever before and younger working population has dropped drastically. A lot of companies have Defined Contribution and it's a requirement for large companies to have this. This is basically an investment plan that you set up through the company investing in things like REITS, stocks, bonds. Some companies allow you to opt out and manage your own pension. I personally opt out and manage my own retirement savings using things like NISA to invest in growth stocks.
Dev in Japan - wow, thanks for the info! Really appreciate what you’re doing on TH-cam. (It’s all very fascinating!) Is reit a popular investment vehicle in Japan? Any idea why? Some reits are probably suffering due to the inevitable cancellation of the olympics.
@@Omikoshi78 REITS are not a good investment at the moment. Stocks are the best bet for aggressive growth if you are young.

Why do so many people want to move to Japan? Be compacted into a over populated city area. Be completely dependent on local food services. There would be no way to be self sufficient what so ever. By comparison Singapore is better when it comes to technology at least. I encourage others to explore their own country. Before exclaiming your intent to move a half a world away.
Now imagine someone from Japan moving to let’s say the United States because they love Disney movies and they think that’s exactly how it’s going to be.
You can do so much better and just need to have some self control. If you feel lonely now or you wait until you move into another country and have that culture shock.
The world is big. Life is short. Explore when you can and try different places. :)
A common misconception is that many people who want to live in Japan want to reside there because they like anime (the american equivalent of so called disney movies). I can't speak for the people you've met but most people i've conversed with wish to move there to study, for business, for the culture etc. Eg. I wish to move there because my life goal is to be a diplomat, and Japan has some of the best poli sci courses and resources.
Singapore is a great place but it can't hold a candle to Japan either in technology or in quality of life. I have never met anyone in Japan who moved there because of anime.

Japan isn't only cities. . . there are suburbs and country side too. i don't really get your claim that you "can't be self sufficient" when obviously you can cook your own food there if you want too. . . Japan is a great place to visit and theres a lot of things to do and see and the food is great. Not everyone only cares about tech or whatever

Hey. You can interview for some companies remotely before moving to Japan. I know one of the viewers of this channel recently interviewed and got a job at PayPay all via online interviews. He is now planning on moving to Japan when borders open up.

Only small percent of Asians have gene for body odor.
They do have these body wipes for wiping sweat off the body for the hot summers. Some of them have deodorant but I don't think many people use them.

@@MrWar2244 You can buy it from some import stores. Like national azabu in Hiroo area. Or on amazon i believe. I just stopped using it and 2 showers a day in the summer.
@@DevinJapan Ha this just cleared something up for me. I'm quite sensitive to smell, I'm probably part canine or something. And I have an Asian friend and we really get along but I'm always a bit uncomfortable around them - this could be why: they have no scent!

Actually I recently found some in stores. When i first moved here they didn't have them but sometime in the last year or so they started popping up.
Not everyone's sweat smells. It's genetic and asian genes usually do not have this smell.

I've lived here long enough. If you notice my channel talks about many things and this is geared towards people who haven't heard some of the negative things. It of course does not cover everything.

The crimes you mentioned are laughable. Japan has one of the lowest crime rates in the world.
Plus, I don't get your problem with lines. Would you rather cut in line like people do in underdeveloped countries?

@@Abshire-jj9fk mentioning these individual crimes is pointless. That was my point. Homicide rate in Japan is about 0.3 per 100,000 people, while America's rate is 4.7 per 100,000 people.
