A starter solenoid should fix it but unfortunately John Deere does not make the solenoid. I would say most all now are made overseas. You’ll just pay more. It’s all good I did replace all parts with OEM until I found out most manufacturers started buying overseas to make more $ and they started using them. It’s sad but true. If the engine is turning over as in spinning when you turn the key to crank, the starter is working. You have a fuel, spark or compression issue. Most of the time it is lack of fuel or no spark.
What if your John Deere mower is new it started once when they took it off the truck and didn’t start anymore. You turn the key it don’t make a sound you replace the battery with a new 1 and it still doesn’t do anything
Make sure the emergency brake is on and the handles all the way facing outwards as described in this video. If that does not work. Check fuses. Make sure the PTO switch is in the off position which is down. That is the switch that controls how you turn the blades on and off.
Great video. Just wondering how you determined that the soliniod was the issue? Is there a way to test it? Mine is not clicking or anything. No noise at all. Thank you
You need to start with the easy first. Check to make sure your battery is fully charged and the connections are clean and tight from the cable ends to the battery. I would also check the fuses, then make sure you are in park and handles all the way out. Certain models need the arms all the way out if there is no emergency brake handle. If you have the emergency brake handle? make sure it is on/engaged. If all of that is good then check the starter solenoid. This video should help but it is not the same machine. th-cam.com/video/5iUmazojh_Q/w-d-xo.html.
Thank you very much. I got it running again. It had a piece of a stick under one of my steering levers, not allowing the neutral safety switch to engage. I appreciate the videos. You definitely know your stuff.
On my ztrak 525e I just replaced the starter because it kept spinning after turning the key off and it’s still doing just that, would you say it would be the solenoid or the ignition?
I don’t like to guess. You can can check that with a test light or meter. I do not have a video on that subject yet as I haven’t come across that. If I had to guess, solenoid.
I have not come across fuses blowing from a bad starter solenoid. What model mower do you have? If you have the Z335E, check all wiring around your electric PTO clutch. “Power Take Off”. It sits on the bottom of your engine that runs the mower deck belt.
I do not have one for that machine yet but watch this how to diagnose a starter solenoid video, It may help you. th-cam.com/video/5iUmazojh_Q/w-d-xo.html.
If your engine is turning over "spinning", your starter solenoid and your starter are Ok. You either have no spark, no fuel or poor compression. Watch this video and it may help you diagnose your issue a little better. th-cam.com/video/JbwjMUNF6kg/w-d-xo.html
I have never worked on a Z530. I can say, I have not seen a solenoid fail that early unless the machine was left outside in very wet conditions. You most likely have a safety switch issue or weak battery. Check the simple things first.
I have this exact model unfortunately. A week or so ago it just stopped working. Like the battery had been taken out or something. I found your channel and watched this particular video and learned quite a lot. Thank you for what you do! However…….mine still will not start. I know the solonoid is bad………because I can bridge the two poles on it and it turns over, but it still will not fire. Any ideas on what to try next?
Impossible to diagnose a machine without seeing it but I can say, first check to make sure your fuse or fuses are all ok then If you can get it to crank over, check for spark. If you have spark you should only need fuel to make it run unless the engine is blown up or has a major compression issue.
@@JohnsonsSmallEngines it turns over when I bridge the 2 poles of the solenoid. It just doesn’t fire. It’s not a battery issue………plenty of power there. Here is what happened………..I cut my front yard and headed to the back yard…….turned the machine off to open the gate. Got back on to start it back up. Nothing………it didn’t turn over or anything. I know it has gas. Brake is on………arms are out in neutral. It doesn’t make any sense.
How many hours is on the machine? Did you replace the starter solenoid? Check fuse or fuses. Check to make sure your blade engagement button is off. Try moving all handles with safety switch interlocks. In and out same with brake handle, up and down then put everything back to neutral spots and try to start it. Make sure seat switch is connected. After all of that you would need to start to diagnose with a light tester or multi meter.
@@JohnsonsSmallEngines I checked the fuses………those look good. I haven’t changed the solenoid yet. But like I said I can get it to turn over by bridging the 2 poles of the solenoid. I really can’t spend a lot of money on this so I just want to make sure what the problem is.
My Z335e won't start up. Heck it won't even make start up noise. I changed spark plugs, air filter, and fuel filter in the summer. I turn key and I can see the hours the engine has been worked.
You will need to check it. This video will walk you through "How to check a starter solenoid". th-cam.com/video/5iUmazojh_Q/w-d-xo.html. It is on a different machine but you will understand how they work.
Impossible to diagnose without seeing the machine. Check the simple first. Make sure the blade engagement switch is in the off position, handles are all the way in the most out position and if you have an emergency brake, make sure it’s on.
If you’re working on this, John Deere, I would suggest make sure the new battery is in correctly. Positive to positive and negative to negative cable. I cannot tell you how many times people have installed the battery backwards. Make 100% sure the battery is good. You may need a multimeter to check voltage or a light tester will also work. Make sure your emergency brake is on and your handles are all the way in the out position. If needed move handles in an out the few times make sure they’re all the way out. Engage and disengage the emergency brake and make sure it is in the on position. Also make sure that the PTO switch is in the off position (pushed down).
Your very welcome:) I’m glad it was helpful. Please give this a thumbs up, subscribe and tell your friends to help my channel grow. It would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for watching.
Hello, new subscriber here!. So how did you come up with this being the problem? My machine started/ run fine for about an hour, stop for a brake then machine will not start. Brake and all the other stuff to start is in correct positions. Oh and this is a great video.
How many hours on the machine? Is the engine not cranking? Or is the engine cranking but not starting? If the engine is not cranking then I will assume it may be a safety interlock switch. If the engine is cranking but not starting it may need choke or it may be that you do not need choke and it may be flooded.
@@JohnsonsSmallEngines it has 22 hr. Engine is cranking but wont turn over. Dont think its flooded its been sitting for a few days. Guess i have to look in to the safety switches.
If the engine is cranking (spinning)but not starting, then your safety switches are fine. Check to make sure you have a full tank of gas. Just to make sure you’re not out of gas. Because it only has 22 hours on it I will assume you should not have any engine issues other than there is a possibility your choke may not be going into the on position. Make sure you have the choke in the on position make sure you have fuel in it should crank up. At 22 hours you also may have a warranty on the machine you may want to look into.

I’m glad it was helpful!
