In this episode, I, a relatively new farmer, explore the nuances of handling and caring for sheep using this advanced system. Watch as we perform crucial tasks such as weighing, dosing, vaccinating, applying Clik, bolus young lambs. We also extend our trial to include adult sheep with a special roll-over device, showcasing its effectiveness. Discover how retrofit enhancements from the manufacturer have improved the system's functionality. This video is perfect for fellow farmers, sheep enthusiasts, and anyone interested in modern agricultural practices.

    Lamb's look strong enough Davie, I like that machine with the roll over and that push up gate is spot on, once you went to just using the squeeze to catch your sheep you were flying then, good job enjoyed the show thanks for sharing, good luck

    Interesting handling system. I'm sure it is more affordable than the more automated systems however I would be concerned about the canvas sling, the padding on the squeeze and the ropes and bungees tearing or breaking over time especially with the number of sheep you have. Also there is a lot of physical effort on your part to squeeze the sheep as well as flipping them over and returning them back from the sling. Again, with the number of sheep you have to work that will take it's toll on your body (back). Great demonstration.

    Great video David.
    I’ve had a Shepherdsmate now for 2/3 years. Great job. Brilliant for weighing lambs too. There’s a board that goes on and holds the wand.
    First time or 2 is slow for the sheep going through but once they get used to it they sail through it.
    Great job and obviously isn’t as fancy as Te Pari but for the price it won’t be beaten fact! And George at Shepherdsmate is good to deal with!
    Only thing I would add to mine (and I don’t know if it even exists) would be an extendable hurdle so that I can keep the forcing pen set up and just reverse the actual handling unit back to it and an extendable hurdle would mean I don’t have to be reversed perfectly to the forcing pen.

    Clik needs about 3 to 4 weeks wool regrowth after shearing to be fully efficient. Nice handling unit..may be suitable for a small to medium flock, but better systems out there.

    David for your safety you are best served wearing gloves when you are handling both the Bolus and especially Clik We have a shepardsmate handling unit since 2015 and it is amazing how much stuff they have upgraded on the unit Overall a fine unit and well worth having and also made by fellow Cavan people

    As I was told by the Click rep, you need to start the spray on the neck wool in order to guarantee shoulder cover as the product run down vertically. Lambs looking great. I like the hammock, it must be more comfortable for the sheep than a metal construction. Just a thought, the oesophageal groove is on the left side of the tongue. The rams are very handsome.

    As with any new equipment it takes times to get used to it. I would worry about the green pad that you push on to control the squeeze that without some type lubricant when not in use and weather that it will maybe start to tear and break down not look very good. Besides that it looks like it works great

    I recently sold my Shepheardsmate, I had it for 3/4 years. It’s OK at lots of things but doesn’t do anything really well. It might suit some people but I think there are better systems out there.

      @@sheepschool365 I actually bought a Te Pari, not directly comparable to the Shepherds mate due to the price difference. I was looking at other options and was close to getting a RAPPA. I think a race based system is, for most jobs, quicker than a Shepherds mate or Te Pari and you can add on a better designed weigh / turnover crate to the end of the race.

      @@sheepschool365 What I did really like were the lamb mounted teat holders from your shop!! They worked really well at lambing, I usually go through loads of teats as the get damaged with lambs rubbing against them. I didn’t need to replace any teats this year. 👍🏽

    I saw your video on how you batch rams and ewes together but is it just your word that determines who the father is on lambplus or on pedigree papers? Or do you have to get a DNA test on each lamb to prove who the dam and sire is if you want to get pedigree papers?? I'm not accusing you of fudging numbers or anything I'm just curious 😂😂 keep up the good work 😊😊

    • @sheepschool365
      @sheepschool365  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Very valid question and I'm sure there are plenty of genuine mistakes in the sheep world. I am pretty cautious marking ewes on the shoulder & recording on the reader which ram they ran with. Plus breeding rams must be genotyped for Sheep Ireland which all improves parentage reliability through DNA testing.

    • @laurenceleacy7409
      @laurenceleacy7409 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for that David. And how would someone go about buying a couple of pedigree ewes? How would you know if they were truly pedigree or not? I might have to give you a call in the near future 😜 or maybe you wouldn't part with any 😂
