  • Today we leave misty and cold Vanrhynsdorp and make our way to Calvinia. We first travel over the Van Rhynspass, where a glimmer of rows and rows of trucks make us worried. Upon closer inspection we can go past the wreckage, but the trucks cannot... We have a quick stop in Nieuwoudtville where some lovely ladies help us out so we can see something magical! A Quiver tree forest (kokerboom forest), an absolute magical place to visit. These same ladies also informed us that the farm roads leading to Calvinia is "very nice and easy"... but it appears that it might be less easy for motorbikes. Another battle in the sand is in store for us!
Don't miss this episode, it is filled with beautiful scenery and funny bits. Another great day in South Africa!

Sjo beautiful country side and equally nice route. Werner I’m glad you were allowed to do the greeting video and that Cissy packed her own bike 😂👍🏻

Thank you so much! And don't worry, I always pack my own bike. Lets just say that I just pack a bit quicker (ssshht I just have less luggage)

Ja Werner. My partner and I bumped into you guys that morning in Nieuwoudtville and also on the road to the quiver tree forrest. You mention to me about the sandy roads in the Cape and my advice to you was to give it a bit more throttle. Just do it, trust me it works. I enjoy your videos and I can see why you call yourselves the traveling tortoises - very relaxed. Sure you have your licences by now. Travel safely, and maybe we meet one another on the road again.

It was nice to meet you on the road. Sand will probably be a challenge for us for a while. I am sure more throttle will work, but it is a mind thing that we need to work through first. It will come with time!

Howsit guys, I've been watching your videos and it's really cool and entertaining.
Regarding the sand roads, have you considered deflating your tires a bit so they float over the sand a bit better.
    Enjoy your travels.🇿🇦

Thank you! So happy to hear you are enjoying the videos! Regarding the sand, we have tried many things, I guess we are just not good sand riders 😅.

@@thetravelingtortoises I'm not sure if you know about Chris Birch. He is a KTM affiliated rider and he has videos with some tips and tricks, applying some of his tips have helped me a lot. Good luck and be safe.

Yes we know the legend 😁 he does a great job with his say no to slow videos.

    between 150-250 years
It is impossible to determine the quiver tree's age through trunk growth rings, as with other trees because of the fibrous centre. The estimated age for these trees range between 150-250 years for the common quiver tree and more than 380 years for the Giant quiver tree. (Copy/pasted)

    Hi Werner & Cissy
Could you perhaps share the accommodation details where you stayed in Calvinia please?

Could you figure out why you went the wrong way despite having GPS? Currently I just ride without GPS. Thinking about getting it but dammm then it must accurate.

It was actually the right road and we could have gone the planned route, but the gentleman warned us that it would stay difficult. That's why we turned around. You can do most routes with you phone (download the map so you can use it offline), but we bought this for when we are going to cross borders.
