Adirondacks Backpacking - Pharaoh Lake Wilderness

- Seems I may be starting a yearly tradition of coming to this area of the Adirondacks. I was initially shooting for some big miles, trying to cover areas I've never gotten to, but my back had other plans on days 2.
Had a few hiccups along the way, from unleashed dogs being a little spicy, to a group of 6-8 that seemed to be on the same schedule as me (couldn't escape them for 2 days). It was still a very quiet and reflective trip, one I think will be a yearly thing from now on.
Thanks for watching, enjoy, and a special thanks to my savior on my way out. Had a tree randomly fall across the road and I had no way of moving it. 15 minutes later...well you'll see what happens.
Peace!
I have a trip planned for there next week. Can't wait to watch your video later this afternoon.
Enjoy it, you're going to have a great time! Also, enjoy the video.
Thanks for taking us along!
My pleasure, glad you enjoyed it!
Incredible. That was absolutely beautiful. Hope your back is better. 😊
Thank you, and yes, the back is doing much better.
Wow!! What a picturesque view from Pharaoh Mountain. Big difference compared to last years smoke conditions, lol.
Hey just to let you know, If you ever get stranded with a tree blocking a road, local fire department could also help out too.
Thanks again for posting a great video.
Right? I was looking at footage of last year the other day and can't believe what a difference it was. That is good to know about the local FD. Thankfully I wasn't too far from the end of the road so if I had to hike out, I could have done it in about 30 minutes. Crazy timing though, that guy was my guardian angel!
Really enjoyed this, thanks for sharing! I love the Pharaoh Lake wilderness, such a beautiful area. That hike up Pharaoh mountain is definitely worth the effort, very nice views. Glad it was only the heat shield on your jeep, that road has some rough spots. I hope your back heals up quickly, that's definitely no fun.
It really is, I just love the diversity that you encounter. Deep woods and all of a sudden, big ole pond right in front of you. I'm very glad it was just the shield, at first I thought my transmission went, was thinking about it all 3 days. The back is doing great now. I'm working on strengthening it a bit, always something I seem to neglect. Very happy you enjoyed the trip, thanks for checking it out.
Great video! My family and I go to Pharaoh lake every year. Can't wait for next month to make the trip. Both of my parents are in their 60's and still able to hike out there. We end up talking to a few backpackers every time we come out there's groups that have been going there for 20 years. If there's a spot that's worth coming back to every year it's this! The hike up Pharaoh lake mountain is short but brutal I hope your back feels better!
Thank you! A lot of groups I stop to talk to are the same, usually a core group of 4-6 that go every year and then there are another 2-3 that come and go. For sure this is going to be a yearly tradition for me as well. The back has been great, started doing some new stretches and strengthening exercises.
Great video. Pharaoh lake is one of my favorite places in the ADK. Leanto #3 is frequently taken. One time sone idiot kids had tents in there and they were obstinate and rude about my friend and I staying. We ended up cowboy camping close by. They didn’t particularly care about the guidelines regarding leantos. They were jerks. I’ve never hiked Treadway. Maybe I’ll will soon 😊
I’ve always wanted to leanto hop since there is so much to explore there but multi day trips are challenging for me
Take care!
Thank you! It is funny you mention tents in a leanto, the guy that I came across in #3 had his hammock setup in it. I was going to say something but left it at a few disappointing words and moved on. Came across another guy heading that way when I was leaving and when I told him, he started flipping out because his tent was broke.
As for the multi-day trips, is it just time that prohibits it?
I’m
Just gonna sit here for a few hours”. Hell yeah. Also, there’s gotta be a way to turn two trekking poles into a tripod :)
This video was absolutely awesome!!!!! Also, free tents. That’s almost a selling point.
Honestly, that was the best 3.5 hours I spent out there, it was so peaceful I fell asleep for a half hour. It's funny you mention the trekking poles, this tripod has one leg that I can turn into a monopod and I didn't even think of using just that until I was about 4 miles in. Almost turned around but I was already on the West side of the mountain. I checked out the tent, it was in good condition. There was a Bushcraft 101 book there too!
@@capsoutdoors a bushcraft “fire starter” I mean “book”
Really loved your videos. I am heading to Pharaoh lake tomorrow. Looks like a really nice place ! Thanks for the video. Cheers from Montreal.
I'm glad you are enjoying them, always great to hear it. Hopefully your trip went well, I've gotten a bit behind on the comments so trying to play catch up.
@5:29 amazing view! Thanks!!
It sure is, I've spent hours up there just staring out at the landscape.
Sweet! Gonna have to save this one for Friday night! Camping in the Catskills tomorrow night, fam trip so no filming. I love that it's 38 minutes!
Enjoy the trip, what part of the Catskills did you head to? Looks like there are still a few clouds hanging around up there but it should be a great Sunset and evening.
@capsoutdoors Stayed at North South Lake. What a beautiful campground. Had a spot right on the water. The night was perfect.
Awesome ! I’ve got to make an effort to get out there ! Looks so nice ! Thanks for sharing brother !
I know a great tour guide if you need one! I'm always looking for time to get up there, the whole area is just stunning. Be good brother, always appreciate seeing you here!
@@capsoutdoors I might ask this guy Joe I know if he would show me around the area ! Maybe in the fall ? 😂😂😎✌️
Hey Joe, What lean-to did you wind up spending the night in on night 1?
Also, looked like the bugs weren't bad.
The bugs were very manageable. I did use repellent but not as much as I thought I was going to need. They seemed to swarm when I would arrive somewhere and then after a few minutes, they just disappeared. Lean-to was Split Rock Bay #4 on Pharaoh Lake, great site.
Is this recent footage ? It’s one million degrees outside and I see puffer coats and hats? Also, is the jeep ok? I’m only on minute ten of the video.
HAHA, yup! When I got to the top of Pharaoh, my thermometer read 52. With the breeze and sweating, it was chilly. Jeep seems to be fine, hasn't blown up yet at least. I'm definitely going to have it put back on though.
@@capsoutdoors this was the most epic adventure. Great spot. Also, so many people skip the mountain! The tons of feeder trails uptop was interesting for me. I’m going back. Your video sold me. Also, I miss my real osprey bag. I’ve been doing a UL bag, I’m not a fan of it yet lol
@@jaycreature3893 Thank you, glad you enjoyed it, and that is awesome you are going back! It's funny you mention the pack because I started looking at UL bags when I got back. I'm not pulling the trigger just yet.
@@capsoutdoors here’s what I absolutely do not like about them: there’s no frame , there’s no pockets, the bag is waterproof but it also sits directly on your body with ZERO venting. So I end up totally soaked. So basically it’s gross Yes I saved four plus pounds, no, I’m not happy
I’m
Trying my best to like it, but it’s a learning curve. The osprey AG is bullet proof
