In reality Vietnam has the most presence in the disputed waters but they don't encroach upon the Philippines EEZ and they don't restrict Filipinos to fish within the Philippines EEZ same with Taiwan. EVERYONE respects their SIGNED TREATY UNCLOS EXCEPT COMMUNIST CHINA.

Glad that Taiwan Talks asked about the effect of the MDT to the Philippines "IF Communist China attacks the US". The political analyst put it subtly but the truth is that if US defends Taiwan and gets attacked, Philippines WILL DEFINITELY be involved. Not many remember this but MDT was invoked by the US during the 9-11 incident which led to the Philippines being involved on the USA's "War on Terror".

Philippines was among the first to join Bush's "Coalition of the Willing" and their involvement in the "War on Terror" included searching for the Foreign terrorists (Al-Queda) who were hiding in Mindanao which was linked to the Al-Queda trained Abu-Sayyaff who also had links to the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and Communist Party of the Philippines. If China has those reclaimed islands like Mischief reef converted to military bases and close to the Philippines why can't Philippines fortify its northernmost islands as a deterrent for any perceived attack from China's PLA. It's also practical for the island to be transit point for evacuation and defense of the northernmost part of the country.

There are a lot of Chinese Ships (including their research ships) illegal entry in Philippine Territories passing Batanes and northern tip of Luzon Island. Which you couldn't actually say as "innocent passage" because they go to Benham Rise and conduct research which they don't have permits to conduct on (highly possible trying to map for their sub operation).
Adding bases in Batanes should prevent this.

Philippines wants their sovereignty to be respected, Taiwan to be at peace, the region to be at peace, and potentially to continue as an ally democracy. But when the merde hits the fan, the Straights are blockaded, what then? Only 10% want to fight for Taiwan but if the Americans are based on their islands and engaged militarily, then the Philippines will have to mobilize fully. Their citizens need to wake up, Taiwan is a harder nut to crack than a few Philippine islands. I can see the PRC move on more islands and infrastructure to annex the entire West Philippines Sea up to the 12 mile limit. Do not forget that in the late 1980's PRC killed 63 Vietnamese soldiers to occupy Islands in the Spratleys. At this point, It is imperative that the US help the Philippines fortify their most outlying islands for forward-deployed capacities.

Will the Philippines be involved in case of a Chinese invasion of Taiwan?
Australian politicians have asked the same questions. If US marines die in the defense of Taiwan, and Australia doesn't help, then in the future if China attacks Australia, they can kiss American help goodbye.
Same thing with the Philippines. If the Philippines doesn't help the US in the defense of Taiwan, then they can kiss PH possessions in the Spratleys goodbye, including Scarborough Shoal and their rotting ship in Second Thomas Shoal. Even if the US wins and Taiwan survives, much of the Philippine EEZ will be a Chinese lake, and a sore Giant would practically be at the Philippines' doorstep. The United States can live with that.
The Philippines has to make a really hard choice.

The Mutual Defense Treaty requires the Philippines to join the US if the US goes to war. If the US goes to war with China over Taiwan then the Philippines will be involved also. Mavulis Island would then be strategically important for both the US and the Philippines as a staging ground for the defense of Taiwan. China will be fighting at least three countries: Taiwan, the US, and the Philippines.

I believe Japan and S. Korea have an agreement with the USA so they will also be involved in the war.

One of the biggest question I have: I s today's Filipino generation is as patriotic as the older Filipino generation? Is our generation today ready to fight and die for our beloved country the Philippines? I wonder what the poll results would be.

I can understand why these guys are being vague on the response whether Philippines will be drawn if United States troops are attacked in a Taiwan contingency. Of course we are, that’s the point of mutual defense agreement, edca sites, balikatan exercise… ready or not.
