I’m liking the 70/80’s and they just keep sounding better the more I use them. They take pedals extremely well which is one of the most important parts of an amp for me
This is the best video I’ve ever watched in my life 😂 seriously enjoyed it and digging my 70/80s!! 🔥 v30s are good for one thing: selling the bastards 💶💶💶
Spot on Kaddy, Nothin wrong with those 7080s.. People gotta realise "Practice cures most tone problems". Ya speakers ain't goin' to change how many downloads ya get on Spotify. Love the Ace Frehley clips. Rock on Brother .
Ha'z I thought I recognised your head from somewhere. Go Team RockoDog! I agree with you after listening to this on your preference for speaker with high gain shit. Gonna buy to for £50 right that were removed from older amps now. Good job. Carry on.
I'm digging the 70 - 80 ' s ... I got an line6 4 x 12 cab from the late 90 ' s loaded with 70 - 80 ' s and I love those speakers who cares what gear snobs say especially when they are wrong lol ... thanks ... GOD BLESS !!!
Great comparison! I like more the low ends of the 70/80 and I am sure that if needed the mids can be boosted as well! Overall, it seems to me that the 70/80 is underrated and for my taste it seems to have a decent brit sound.
For me, seventy80’s were good at bedroom volume. When cranked mine sounded muddy and metallic. Now I have a 212 cab with a greenback and a v30… I’m enjoying its sound.
To my ears the 70-80 has a more punchy mid range with a smooth bottom end. I think a lot of people just assume the 70-80 is a cheap crappy speaker because they're a bit more affordable compared to other Celestions and are in a number of affordable amps. It all depends on your ears and style of music on which you prefer.🎸
from a comparison video I saw recently, the 70/80 sounds similar, if not a little bit more balanced version of a g12T-75. I find a lot of marshall players want that greenback sound, so the swap the speakers in the DSL line to greenbacks/creambacks. The 70/80 is perfect for trying to emulate users of the g12T-75. Tons of rock and metal guys used the g12t75's from the 80's onward. I love them
I enjoyed this. My opinion varies from yours on the two KISS riffs. Those two Kiss riffs took me back to my teenage years on the Vintage 30s; because, so many of us in the late 70s through the 80's had graphic/band eq's on home and car stereos where we cranked the bands 3k and 5k up to get all of that screaming rock guitar goodness that we could get in order to aggravate our parents. The other riffs and tones, I'm not as familiar with and those sounded better in the 70-80... I guess because I'm used to hearing that style through modern spotify / youtube algorithms earphones.
The seventy 80 is a great speaker, underated and used for low budget amps, which made people think that the speaker is crap, but nothing farther from truth. Every celestion speaker has a different personality, and they match different styles and likes. Personally I prefer the seventy 80 rather than the v30 or the greenbacks, it sounds more round and not so coloured.
the 70-80 is more mid scooped than the V30, more compressed in short. It sounds like it brings a lot of frequencies together than the V30.. Some EQ adjusting and I could live with the Non Cork Sniffer price.. Just bought a GB made silver series Celestion V12-60 that was Celestion's lower budget speaker in the day, V-30's Father. It has loads of mids and is a little more complex than the V30, sort of sounds like a green back and a V30 had a red headed baby. I like it in my Fender Deluxe Reverb, gives it a lot more in your face authority volume at 1:00 good for a band situation.
It’s not completely flat sounding, is just not as colored as other models and deliver really accurate the real true of the amp and the player, so that’s why many people dislike, what’s wrong is their amp and their rig IMHO
This is not a fair comparison. You can't compare the 2x12 cab with a 4x12 from the start. Changing the speaker on the same cab at the same corner might be a truer comparison.
I like clean tones, so I closed my eyes during the clean tones, and with my eyes closed I could not tell for sure when you switched from one to the other. Thanks.
I bought a dsl20 head about 2 years ago and then discovered Harley Benton and saw they sold a 2x12 cab with vintage 30s. It sounds good. About a year later I got a good deal on a b-stock Marshall mx 2x12ar vertical cab that Marshall pairs with the amp on bundle deals. It has the seventy 80 speakers. I actually think the Marshall cab sounds better with that amp.
The v30 has more jump with the gain and a better lead sound. The 70/80 is okay, but seems to create a very solid state type of overdrive sound, if I can put it that way. The clean sounds are a toss up: brighter with a v30, more balanced with the 70/80.
Agree about the V30s being a great clean tone speaker. The 70/80s had their moment with heavier distortion for me, but the V30s were better with the crunch at times
Sweetwater website it says that the Seventy 80 it's designed to sound like the Greenbacks. The Celestion website doesn't say anything about that. Don't know how Sweetwater came up with that.
I have the 70/80 in my Monoprice/HB 15w tube amp. It's alright, it just needs an EQ pedal badly in my honest opinion. I've had it for 7 years and feel like I still need to break it in as I haven't really played much in that time. It would be great to get a cheap solid state amp to pump some music through it while I'm at work
I actually have one of each in a 2x12 and it worked out well. Its my cab for the 2 amp, the number 1 amp is running a pair of creambacks. I tend to find the V30 not as suited to life as a pair in a 2x12, but in a 112 it is better. The 70/80 as a pair in a 212 is far better. Still though the 70/80 is really underrated, and once played in are even better. I suppose people see cheaper option and change it out before giving them an actual try.
Thanks for the comparison- liking the 70/80 as well- taking things even a step further .. First of all, I LOVE your song selections. I was pleasantly surprised to hear Rip It Out. The two speakers are fairly close and in the end it's all in how one dials in their amp. Based on just your video and what was coming out of my speaker, I have to give the edge to the 70/80. I've been experimenting with some Celestion / Eminence speaker combinations and getting some really interesting results. Of course, as with everything Your Mileage May Vary. Thanks for the vid!

the big difference was at the end... v30 won on very last riff... 70-80 was smoother on the rest clearer not as spikey as v30 but v30 won on final metal tone if you understand my hearing...lol
The minute you said you were using a Boss Katana, I knew the 70/80's would hold their own or possibly win. Because my Katana sounds great with them, too. 7080's work great with modelling amps because of their flat EQ. In fact, I think some modelling combos ship with 7080's. If you repeated the experiment with one of your tube heads, the V30's might come out on top.
Sounds like 70/80 fills in the lower mids or something. You should check out WGS Reapers and especially their Retro 30's. Also, they're like $30 cheaper. Do a vid!
In open cab/combo they sound thin and glassy but in closed back they are great. got 2×12 cab for my dsl20hr with 70 80 with a thought to put v30 in it cause everyone say they suck. But after playing them there is no way im changing speakers

If you got an H B Monoprice cabinet with the 70/80 for free would you use it in the cab supplied or use something else? I got a free cab and am using it with a Hotone Mojo Diamond head (Fender Tweed version) . Sounds so cool for a grand total of $60. For a loud practice amp. And I wonder if Chinese assembly is better or worse than British built
Hi Kaddy, as far as I see in your vids, our taste is very similar. I'm torn between two 212 cabinets, the marshall mx212 vertical, loaded with 70/80 and the harley benton 212 vertical with v30's. Which one would you offer more?
Yeahhhhhh that's a hard one! I'll say this.... if you are after a more scooped sounding cab get the Marshall with 70/80's... if you want a more mid focused sounding cab... get the HB with V30's. I don't think you can go wrong with either. V30's (if you aren't unlucky enough to get a sh*t pair) do seem to sound better when you mic up and record though... 70/80's sound great in the room but can be tricky to make them sound good when you mic them. Make of that what you will... :)
@@gitarspan No probs man... well there is no right or wrong but for me, I friggin LOVE vertical 2x12 cabs. Just a preference thing really... otherwise you kinda have to put the horizontal cab on a stand or something so both speakers aren't directly on the ground. I like it to hit me in the face more which you get with the 2x12 vertical cab which is also angled in order to achieve that! Good luck!
I have but vintage 30 and 70-80. I don't know if i like it more because i've had it for so long, but to me the 70-80 fits more situations and is less tiring to listen to.
I preferred the sound of the 30s, but for half the price, you're not gonna be complaining. I mean you can buy a 70-80 loaded 2x12 delivered to your door for like $450 and the 4x12 is not much more.
Yeah It does sound thinner... But it's the same setting as crunch since it's "shared". Maybe the volume is lower... Dunno, haven't played that amp in yonks
I never did really like the v30. It doesn’t have the clarity and high end of a seventy 80, but it doesn’t have the mids of a greenback or a t75. I like the seventy 80 for the clean tones and some of the sharpest lead tones, but my personal favorite for balanced rhythm/lead tones is a pair of stock 1960a speakers and a pair of creambacks (or greenbacks for a lower wattage amp)
Looks like it might be a case of... "people hate the seventy 80's because the internet told them to" They both sound great, 70/80 is a bit more tinny but still sounds good.
70/80' s more open and modern tone. Vintage 30' more mid focused. Both good but I like 70/80's better for high gain tones.. v30's sound a bit more like eminence or Jensen in a fender amp.. 70/80's in metal application 110%.. thanks for this video, I just put a 70/80 in my line 6 catalyst 60 and now I know I made a good choice.. thanks again much appreciated 👍👍
Fair enough... Not like that in the room though. If I moved the mic a bit more to the left or right of the center cone it would smooth out on the recording. Every speaker has their sweet spot and sometimes different mics get better results when cab micing
The V30 has a more open sound and clearer tone..the 70/80 has a more nasal sound and scoop in the mids with high end sizzle. I have had the laney cab 4x12 70/80 for the past 20 years and its a tank of a cab .l used it with a marshal 120/120 w solid state amp and digitech studio rack mount gear .. Now With a killer valve amp combined with the MESA Cab V30s with the peavey 6505+ No boost needed just a monster tone. Clear and articulate
The 70/80s are a lot muddier. I only found out my cab has 7080s so I'm a bit bummed now because every other Celestion 12" speakers sound better from what I've heard so far.
It never sounds muddy in the room for me... Mate forget what people say... They sound good paired with a good amp and dialled in well. I have many different cabs and speakers that are suppose to be "better" and the 70/80s still hold up well against them.
My 412 cab of 70/80s is muddy in a live mix. I needed a 7 band EQ to reshape the mids so it popped but wasn't muddy. Swapped out 3 of the speakers. 1 UK V30, 1 China V30, and a Eminence Wizard. Now it covers all of the ranges and would make recording easier
@@tormentridden Yeah but also depends on the amp, type of cab, the room etc... I often use an EQ even with some v30 cabs paired with certain amps to bring them out of the mud. 70/80s do lack some mids though so I know what you're saying... Pairs well with mid heavy amps though.
I’m liking the 70/80’s and they just keep sounding better the more I use them. They take pedals extremely well which is one of the most important parts of an amp for me

I own a Mesa Recto V30 cab and a Crate BV 70/80 cab (both broken in). The 70/80 cab is the go to for tracking, handles mid focused heads much better.

Oh hell yes... if you can find them for a reasonable price then get em! Wish I could find a set of 4 in my neck of the woods.
i think they were manufactured by Eminence, so you might have more luck looking for their newer lineup, maybe something along the lines of Texas Heat.

Definitely Seventy 80 in the crunch. Flavor taste for both with high gain. I would put both in a cabinet and blend them. You’re not wrong.
70 80s have a solid state buzzier distortion, holes in the mids and tone. The v30 sounds fatter, fuller tone and more like you used a tube amp.
Although I used a solid state amp for this demo... I probably should do a tube amp comparison...
You make both speakers sound awesome but I have to agree that on most of your comparisons the 70/80 sounded better to me

I have but vintage 30 and 70-80. I don't know if i like it more because i've had it for so long, but to me the 70-80 fits more situations and is less tiring to listen to.
Loaded to 212 orange “cheap”english70/80, very very good result for my taste. It’s main cab. Second is 112 eminence Governor with, for C# tune
I preferred the sound of the 30s, but for half the price, you're not gonna be complaining. I mean you can buy a 70-80 loaded 2x12 delivered to your door for like $450 and the 4x12 is not much more.
That’s what they put in the Cambridge by Vox but they market or something different is in 70 -80:I have celestion g12 t
in crunch mode for sure i prefer the 70/80. for high gain sorry but with your settings both are thin.
Yeah It does sound thinner... But it's the same setting as crunch since it's "shared". Maybe the volume is lower... Dunno, haven't played that amp in yonks
I put V30s RIGHT next to a G12T-75. 79/80s are ok. Classic Leads blow them both away!
Seventy 80 for the clean IMHO.
78/80 is way better
I never did really like the v30. It doesn’t have the clarity and high end of a seventy 80, but it doesn’t have the mids of a greenback or a t75. I like the seventy 80 for the clean tones and some of the sharpest lead tones, but my personal favorite for balanced rhythm/lead tones is a pair of stock 1960a speakers and a pair of creambacks (or greenbacks for a lower wattage amp)
Looks like it might be a case of... "people hate the seventy 80's because the internet told them to"
They both sound great, 70/80 is a bit more tinny but still sounds good.
I think it depends on what you put them in for black star I think it may be best to replace the 70/80 they sound like complete shit in the black star.
70/80
By the sounds of all your playing examples can’t hear anything wrong with the 70/80 more than adequate.
Yeah I have a seventy80, its as good as other Celestions IMO. The K100 is my favourite.
Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one. To my ears the V30s sound better in every tone comparison and I don't own either.
Good news! I have a 70 80 here that I will trade you for a vintage 30.
70/80 crushed it in high gain is a Beast I loved it
I listened carefully on a good set of headphones.
The 70/80 sounds thin, shrill, and buzzy. They’re grating and hard to listen to.
Now With a killer valve amp combined with the MESA Cab V30s with the peavey 6505+
No boost needed just a monster tone. Clear and articulate
70/80 has more definition, more clarity, am i wrong?
v30 is like a bees shrill
Gooooooood....
Celestion 70/80's are BETTER
70/80 is more scooped sound.
true
The 70/80s are a lot muddier. I only found out my cab has 7080s so I'm a bit bummed now because every other Celestion 12" speakers sound better from what I've heard so far.
It never sounds muddy in the room for me... Mate forget what people say... They sound good paired with a good amp and dialled in well. I have many different cabs and speakers that are suppose to be "better" and the 70/80s still hold up well against them.
@@KaddysJamKave Yeah for sure, in agreeance. I think I'm gonna get a boss katana 100w amp head for it and just have some fun
Tone
70/80👍
Guitar and beer no mix
Beer??? That's an insult 😮
@@KaddysJamKave Not at the same time. Beer is not recommended to clean the guitar
@@rubenalvar3253 Don't be silly... I use Straight Ned's whiskey for that ;)
@@KaddysJamKave Then, yes :)
Vintage 30👍
No way senior the vintage 30s sounds way better.
dam that seek and destroy sucked lmao.
LOL
Lovely wife I have one just like yours lol plenty of spunk !!!
I’ll take Seventy-80´s, V-Types or G12T75’s over V30’s any day
my 2x12 70/80s sounds great.......who cares about other's opinion...thx
