My semi relevant opinions: the Specialita was one of my favorite espresso grinders. I loved the fine control of the knob. the Sette 270wi was noisy and super messy but it weirdly made great pourovers.
I own both grinders. The only issue I have ever had with the Sette 270Wi is the noise. The Libra works well, but the build quality is not as good as advertised. Upon arrival of my grinder I found the adjustment knob sticker was mis applied and it fell off a few days later. I found cross threaded screws in the base. Cleaning is a real pain. All of the screws I had to access for cleaning were over tightened. The screws are made from a soft material and will strip out over time. The small hex wrench that comes with the grinder is needed to remove the tiny hex screws, one of which is located under the adjustment knob.I’ve not found a reasonable way to remove the front spout to clean. I think the comment that the Libra provides better shots after shote is BS. The Libra is nice looking setting on the bench and grinds a good cup of espresso, but the Sette offers the same taste in the cup and is much easier to clean and will automatically put itself in sleep mode. I find no difference in cup taste between the two grinders when I pull shots from my ECM espresso maker.
I was expecting a much higher price. This is going onto my short list of grinders to replace my adequate-but-not-spectacular DF64P as my daily driver. Still deciding if I want to continue down the single-shot path, or move onto a more convenient setup. Thanks so much for showing another option.
I’ve been thinking about changing from the Sette 270Wi. However, I would love to get one that’s timed or grind by weight, yet also quiet. The Sette 270Wi is good but loud. This is definitely one that I’ve been looking at.
Loved the review as always! What made you switch from your x54? And what grinder did you switch too. Thinking of getting one for espresso and I'm not bothered about single dosing. Thanks in advance
Thanks for another great analysis. I have the LX Newton 65. I think that the brand is linked to Eureka. Is that correct? Will you do an analysis of the LX 65? Thanks!
Not super familiar with the LX Italia brand! I don't believe they're directly linked to Eureka, but could be mistaken. Might be something to look at in the future :)
I love my Libra. It’s an awesome little beast and built like a tank. Cleaning is a bit of a chore but I’m okay with that if the performance is where it is. Best grinder I’ve ever owned and one that is staying with me for many years to come.
I prefer the Fiorenzato All Grounds Sense as the better gravimetric option: better built, better user experience, better grind result, better grind distribution in the portafilter and more accurate. Not sure if you've had the chance to review one?
Haven't had anything from Fiorenzato in yet, had a few people mention the Sense! I don't love the appearance of them, but performance and customer opinions seem encouraging!
I have the Libra and it’s great. Quiet, consistent, and well built. My only complaint is that it’s always 0.4- 0.5g over dosing which is annoying at this price point. But I just set to 0.5g over my desired dose. Not a cheap option but the workflow makes it worth it imo
I have the libra too and absolutely love it. Regarding the weighing issue, I would recommend that you try to recalibrate it. Eureka have a video on how to do it, and it only takes a few minutes... Highly recommended 😊 Good luck with it if you give it a try 👍
@@SureFeelsGood I'm a little hesitant to weigh in on that as I typically go for medium flat myself. I believe that I have heard others say that there does exist better grinders for very light roasts but I can neither confirm nor disconfirm that. However, what I can say is that it have handled everything I have thrown at it with ease
I have the libra and the profitec go! I am having issues with the espressos that I get from this pair, I feel a lot of astringency | acidity in the shots. Any thoughts? Thanks for the review!!
Hey! Check out this video. Sourness is a widely occurring phenomenon, not something specific to your pair of gear :) th-cam.com/video/aKQQogAPtic/w-d-xo.htmlsi=kSaVqJPsEuva2vDs
Looking at buying one of these. Can I suggest running a sound test? Strange that you mentioned the difference in sounds to the Sette but didn't give a demo.
This is on the quieter end of grinders. The Sette in particular was mentioned because that is a VERY loud grinder with similar features. Nothing to worry about from a grinding volume perspective on Eurekas
Does the Libra work well with 54mm Breville portafilter? How about Specialita? Will I notice a huge difference from built-in Barista pro grinder? I might wait for new "Specialita Up" model. Thx for the vid!
Hi, is the version of the grinder in this video "grey" or "chrome" It doesn't look like the exterior is stainless steel nor does it look particularly "grey"
Is it suitable to use two different portafilters (regular one and bottomless, which weigh different)? Will it tare each one correctly and weigh the coffee accurately? Thank you in advance.
Hi! im starting a small shop with clothing, home accessoires and more. I also would like to have a coffee to go corner, with all kinds of coffee. I dont have a water connection, so a water reservoir is necessary. What kind of machine would you guys recommend?
This will depend on your expected volume and which country you are in. Depending on those you may be required to get a commercial machine in order for it to be able to be left on all day, and for it to comply with local food preparation laws
I had it initially too, just needed to tighten the portafilter forks to hold better. Will also happen if you put the portafilter in before turning the grinder on and then try to grind
This can do pour over and espresso, but if you're looking for dual duty you might be better off with the Specialita or one of the new grinders coming down the pipeline we saw at HOST! Check out that video!
I’m sorry one more question the baratza esp looks to be the best grinder for the price it’s 199 if you go on fellow s site you can get the opus 175 is it that messy and hard to dail in ? Would the esp be the easy choice
Why do people not mention the Vario W or W+ when discussing weight based grinding ? Its always the sette, but the Vario is much better and uses the 54mm Mahlkonig ceramic burrs..Only Lance Hedrick gave the Vario its flowers
Because the Vario W+ isn't really an espresso grinder in terms of workflow. Really big grounds bin, no portafilter forks. Grind quality is great, but can get a much more simple and clean espresso workflow for the money. th-cam.com/video/OzpXTYtIFy0/w-d-xo.html
I played with a friend's LIbra and compared it with my Sette. Overall it didn't leave me wanting to switch. There were several instances where the Libra displayed FH errors, which was annoying. This was a while back, so hopefully Eureka fixed it by now. Didn't you encounter these errors? As for other aspects, the Libra is indeed quieter than the Sette, has nicer build quality and is easier to adjust portafilter height. The cons are that it's messier (especially without the funnel), produces less fluffy ground coffee with more clumps, and that it's not suitable for single dosing. The Sette retains less coffee and has almost no popcorning, so it's quite useful for single dosing. Lastly the Libra is more difficult to change between grind settings repeatedly. I never use the Sette for filter coffee, but switching between grind levels of different beans for espresso (or when switching between baskets) is very easy. I just need to remember to write down the settings, e.g. one could be 7B and another can be 9E, but switching is dead easy and 100% repeatable.
I agree with some of these points. The FH error is when you don't have the portafilter forks tight enough, or you put the portafilter on before turning on the grinder. I disagree that the Eureka is messier. It should be used as intended with the funnel and then it's notably VERY clean as mentioned in the video. Grind settings are unanimously a weak point on Eureka at the moment if trying to use as an all around. Hence why I would really only consider the Libra as an espresso option if I'm recommending it to someone
@@LifestyleLab_ Being able to use the Sette without a funnel to me is a plus. It's also extremity consistent without WDT, so a funnel really is an extra step. I use a funnel and do in-basket WDT with my manual grinders and Timemore 078s, but it's really not needed with the Sette, where subsequent shots have almost the exact shot time to the second. If you try using the Libra without the funnel you'll see how much messier it is than the Sette.
Yes, you could swap the burrs, but that's going to be another added cost to your new grinder. And then, you're still grinding into a big grounds bin, there aren't portafilter forks on the W+. I've literally owned the grinder and tried to use it for this purpose. Its not ideal at all
Yeah it might be robust overall but the hopper plastic is absolutely cheap as shit and the hopper lid is like a wafer thin plastic which breaks with the lightest impact.

The X54 is passable for single dosing. There are some bellows mods available in the aftermarket that make it a good single doser
