James, you prob won't read this, but for anyone that does - that weird funnel pour over thing - The metal filter in that is a FANTASTIC micro mesh filter. We use it a lot to filter things like chicken stock. It's fantastic. It also fits into an 8 cup chemex (which you don't like very much) quite well, in lieu of the paper filter. I actually like it pretty well as a pour over tool, but I understand that it's confusing. It is, however, very versatile. Cheers!!
I've bought a used one via Ebay (bc not available anymore from IKEA) to filter hot olive oil back into its bottle after frying potato slices for a Spanish tortilla. The wobbly "annoying plate" can be removed by turning it 90°. Perfect 👍

A friend who had the glass and metal IKEA press pot for a dozen years bequeathed it to me on her move to Seattle back in 2016. With me it lasted until last year when I inadvertantly tapped it with a spoon. Fifteen, sixteen years all tolled, and then a sad passing, but miraculous! For any IKEA product to last that long, even four years with me, is a miracle.
I have lots of IKEA products that have lasted me more than 12 years and are still going strong : all my furniture (including HEMNES stuff and bed, and leather couch, and nearly all the kitchen products (I don't buy the non stick cookware, that never lasts, no matter the brand), and I bought my glass french press 2 years ago, no issue whatsoever. The only thing I might change this year is my mattress, but after 12 years, it's pretty standard.
What he refers to as the 'Chönky Bøi' is called the 'ANRIK' (Rich in heritage), but the coffee/tea maker doesn't seem available in North America. It is available in Europe, India, Australia, and probably other areas.
I've been using the chunky boy French press for about 10 years. Bought it at Ikea in Shanghai. I actually use it more for tea brewing in recent years, but I'm amazed and pleased to say that after thousands of uses that rubber seal on the strainer is still holding up. mine is a bit better polished than yours, but I would agree it is the best coffee device Ikea sells.
A stainless Moka pot for that price? Sweet! Compare that to a Contessa, Carmencita, or Alessi 9090. Only what's nice about the 9090 is that it latches closed instead of screwing so you don't need a towel to hold the base if you pre-heat your water separately like he does.
I bought the glass French press and IKEA has definitely upgraded it since your review. The filter parts are now all metal and it feels extremely sturdy!

I actually love that pour over funnel thing. Not for pour over coffee thought. But it is a great reusable filter for cold brew and fry oil filtering. The funnel also fits in normal bottle spout.

Actually, I like the Ikea coffee. They have a couple of brews, I've tried them all and it's a decent quality coffee for a very good price. Nothing fancy, but will do as a coffee fix in the morning.
to be honest that glass french press is just fine. I go even further, most of the french presses are the same, regardless of price. some of them just fancier, but does not do a better job.
Disagreeing here. I had a very similar device for a few months. It broke while pressing down, giving a very sharp shard that was a few millimeters from going into my hand. I got a metal french press after that and have not looked back since. Pro tip: Get a designer one that actually carries spare parts long term. Mine is a kosta boda, very similar to the ikea one. If those would have existed back then I would have just gotten one of them.
I've had the glass french press for 3 years and use it regularly. The filter itself still holds up well and the edges still seal properly. For 20$, it's a steal. If you don't "KOBE" it in your sink everytime you are done with your coffee, it should last quite a while.
As an American, I'm sure it surprises no one that when he said "this is 20 pounds" A part of my brain immediately thought "wow that's heavy" before it got slapped by the other part of my brain. Now I'm thinking about a 20lb hand grinder, what the hell would it need to be made out of? uranium? Thank you for the video, I was tempted to buy some cheap coffee stuff last time I was at Ikea (since I am a poor college student), but I think I'm going to hold out for something more expensive when I have more disposable income.
The burrs or blades on a coffee grinder have to be very specifically made and not a lot of manufacturers make them, which is probably where the cost comes from. They also have to be weighty enough to grind effectively
Good review. We own the IKEA glass French Press and actually love it. We used it so much for camping and loved it, that we got a second for in our home and use it regularly for a quick afternoon cup of coffee. They have both been more rugged and lasted longer than we would have ever thought.
I am a student and have the cheap ass French Press and honestly love it. I‘m sure there‘s definitely better out there but if you are on a budget I‘d recommend it without a doubt. Definitely better than instant coffee or an expensive coffee maschine, for which I also have no space 😂
My four year old son is obsessed with Toy Story 4, and thinks the word "trash" is hilarious. He was playing while I watched your video, heard you say the word "trash" 3 times in a row and complely lost it. It was the funniest thing he ever heard. So if this whole TH-cam coffee reviewer thing doesn't work out, you've definitely got a career as a comedian for children 😂
I‘m using the cheap ikea french press for like 5 years now. I also have a more expensive one but the cheap ones works perfectly well and I didn’t break it in all those years despite being not extremely cautious.
Ana Mosley You are lucky it lasted two weeks. I bought one and the second time using it, although it still ‘worked’, it no longer frothed. It made a weird sound, like an asphyxiated motor. I didn’t even bothered to bring it back to the store. I prefer the hand frother from Bodum. At least that way, I am sure it will work.
The small French press is my absolute favorite. Makes good coffee, cleans easy and it is like 6 euro. Have on for the office, one for home. Makes two cups. Absolutely perfect. They should make a better v60 funnel, better markings and less ugly.
It is also a sign that this guy is super biased against IKEA products. He clearly states that he hates these products almost right off the bat. For instance, when he says that the glass french press looks flimsy, it in fact is not (and does not). Several persons in the comments have commented that they have used theirs for years and it's going strong. I can attest to that, it does the job and it won't break unless you drop it on hard floor of course. But it's definitely not flimsy. At least, we know that the products he doesn't hate are actually very good quality.
The extension for the funnel that you don’t like is intended to be used over a mug/glass. They’re allowing you to use the pour over method over a thermos like you did.
I used to own a Bodum Chambord French press, that is until my wife started making tea in it. She didn’t warm the glass before adding the boiling water and shattered it. I picked up a French press at IKEA as a temporary replacement and I actually like it. It’s not the best, but it does produce a decent coffee. A little more grounds make it through the filter and I don’t especially care for the plastic, but it served its purpose quite well until I found a more decent replacement. I still use it from time to time.
Jägermeister is releasing a cold brew coffee drink with 33% alcohol We will be waiting to hear from you. Btw, I always wondered about this stuff, thanks for this video!
The glass press is actually decent, I've had the same one for almost 4 years. With good technique, it turns out a good cup. I love ikea but this review was really funny! 😁
IKEA's ground organic coffee and espresso are okay enough -- we find the flavour on the mild side. Can't beat their price point for organic products though... big fan of their Lingonberry jam, for example. Have the IKEA French press (black plastic with glass) and the fully metal pour-over. The French press is still going strong years later (with no chips or signs of failure) -- the pour-over is new to us and great for single cups. (And yes, the metal bits are designed to come apart for ease of washing individual components.) We have a high quality Italian stovetop espresso doodad for guests who are more serious about their morning coffee experience... that said, most are perfectly fine with the other methods.
Judging from other comments, it was really sturdy. So if someone bought it, they wouldn't need another again for years. Which means that after a while, sales of it will slow down and IKEA won't make as much of a profit on it as on other less sturdy products. So yeah, they discontinued it because it works and that's less profitable in the long run. :/
@@MissPoplarLeaf - not really. That cheap stuff won’t get manufactured to be produced for ages (it's not supposed to become a "classic" like a BODUM French press). It simply should lure you into the shop (and if not buying a full blown kitchen, take whatever other stuff to make you a happy & "successful" trophy hunter). OTOH, I've got really frustrated after I've found out that IKEA has discontinued "my" vanity basin only 30 years after I've bought its predecessor! 🤣 (so I drove 200km to get it from someone who had it stored for that period of time). Otherwise I would have had to reshuffle my whole (micro) bathroom interior.
As someone who is on a low income and a tight budget and who lives in a small town in new Zealand. I've had a $5 (NZD) French press for the past 10 years and it as never broken and makes a good cup of coffee everytime.
I´m using the glass french press at work for almost 6 months now. At least 2 full brews from monday to friday up to 4 or 5 some days. And it still works. Nothing broken, quality stable and - what my biggest fear was - even the 3 parts of the filter survived w/o any damage every single dis- and reassembling after every use until now. For very far below 10 bucks a no brainer to me...
Yeah! I was disappointed he just dismissed it. It’s actually a really solid Bodum knockoff! The glass is borosilicate, so it holds up. Sure, it’s not the highest quality or the nicest looking, but it’s great for anyone looking for a decent, economically priced French press! I myself picked up two for making cold brew, since buying a couple Bodum’s when I wasn’t even sure I would like the French press for cold brewing seemed a bit expensive 😆. I use them every day though, and they’re great! I’d totally replace them with nicer ones, but they haven’t given me a reason to need to yet!
I really like the glass french press from ikea because they also have a baby sized version for brewing just one cup which is perfect for my one cup of morning coffee. Also I've had it for a year now and haven't destroyed it yet, so the glass is perfectly fine, if you don''t intend to take the thing camping or anything.
I have that one too, very cheap and imo it doesn’t feel cheap and has yet to break, but maybe they upgraded them since the filter on mine is entirely metal
Which is bad, i guess? Sure we got a little gem sometimes. But mis-recomendation is really terible. I got recomended claire laffut - verite (french indie pop) a few days ago. Which is great song. But i got attack by french indie pop since then. The music genre that i dont normaly really like.
Yeah, I don't think NordVPN is a trustworthy company or someone people should promote. Them being the biggest VPN advertisers and still not having done a 3rd party security audit tells something about their priorities also.
This may be too harsh but I think supporting NordVPN hurts your credibility as a reviewer. By putting your name, your seal of approval, on this questionable product (NordVPN) puts it at the same level as all your other legitimate endorsements and tarnishes them by association.
To add to this, they didn't just keep quiet about it, they didn't say anything for a year-and-a-half, until they were questioned about it and had to come clean. Also, if you know how VPNs, servers, networks, etc. work, then their response to customer data being accessed sounds like they're using their policies to deflect the question.
Here's a life tip, almost all youtube sponsors are bad companies with inferior products. If you don't believe me do some research next time you hear of a sponsor. Good companies with great products don't use youtube as their main advertising strategy.

Cheers!!

The use of ö suggests to me that James knows how to correctly pronounce ø, which I do not. Yet.

to be honest that glass french press is just fine.

The burrs or blades on a coffee grinder have to be very specifically made and not a lot of manufacturers make them, which is probably where the cost comes from. They also have to be weighty enough to grind effectively
do you like french press coffee? get the ikea french presses. they are all great, cheap, and not at all as flimsy as ya boy hoffmann here suggested
Good review. We own the IKEA glass French Press and actually love it. We used it so much for camping and loved it, that we got a second for in our home and use it regularly for a quick afternoon cup of coffee. They have both been more rugged and lasted longer than we would have ever thought.

I was at IKEA yesterday and while looking at these things I thought how much James Hoffmann would hate them :D Surprise, surprise
You forgot the milk frother thingy! Still counts as a coffee item for all those lattes and cappucinos.
I bought one of those (from IKEA) and it broke within two weeks. Not worth the $5 IMO
The French press works much better.
Oof i have had it for 6 months now and still works
The small French press is my absolute favorite. Makes good coffee, cleans easy and it is like 6 euro. Have on for the office, one for home. Makes two cups.
Absolutely perfect.
They should make a better v60 funnel, better markings and less ugly.
I think this is a sign for IKEA to get The Hoff to be their Coffee Making Product Consultant.
I've never found the need for an extension on my V60, no matter what I'm brewing into.

Would have definitely added to the video, whether he found it good or bad.
That's where he draws the line.
Once you are used to the good stuff...you dont want the IKEAbrand.
It's so frustrating that the only thing James actually liked seems to be the only product IKEA have discontinued.
THIS! My french press literally broke tonight, and I was like, I'd buy the chonky boi! And then it was discontinued...
@@sturmykins they have a good looking double wall glass thing now if you still need a nice French press
That's why they discontinued it: it worked.

NordVPN suffered a pretty major security breach, then kept quiet about it. You can't make up for that kind of flaw by offering a discount.
What I also think is super sketchy is their discount “countdown” which just resets.
