    I use a different method For installing ports with good plastic preservation & Connectivity: Heat the area from the top with hot air until all of the solder melts, and once the solder is all melted then insert the port down into the melted solder and hold in place until it cools

    is there somewhere you can find replacement usb ports if you don't have a second board? is it a problem if you use slightly different ports? the pinouts should be the same since usb is a standard right? I need to replace a usb port and have one from a different laptop with 5 extra pins for otg but I don't need them so I will probably cut them and connect only the 4 pins, I might have to modify the replacement port with a multitool tho

    If your hands are shaking do not press connector with tweezers, because that is schoolbook example to have cold solder joint. Instead of assisting soldering iron with hot air, it is much easier to have 60 Watts soldering iron just for soldering larger metal parts with high dissipation. But need to work little bit faster in order to prevent board damage.

    • @kepler104
      @kepler104 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      60 watts is nothing......
      Even high end 100watt+ irons will struggle with big ground planes on these ports, they are just too much for the solder irons..

    You did lots of port replacements and you never even once checked the data transfer of those ports. Maybe the data lines were not properly soldered. You only check + and - lines your way. Usb-c ports have lots of lines , they can even transfer 4k video . You only check 4 out of 24 lines...

    after fixing the board drained 1 Amp, whereas nothing was connected to that. also power button was not pressed. which component was taking current? fan or something else?

    Question: The old port had high degree solder + glue and it broke off, with 180 degree solder and no glue will this job not come back in time ? In a case like this should we not use hot glue ?

    • @BucifalulR
      @BucifalulR 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think you misunderstood the customer's request. The text says that the boards he sent over are for spare parts. Sorin seems to have used the fanless one to get the working ports, and soldered those to the motherboard that was initially in the laptop, which is what was requested.

  • @somewaresim

    Wouldn't it be a bit safer to melt the solder, then drop the port on to minimize heat on the port?

    • @FreeWhilly734
      @FreeWhilly734 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Some people say this but I personally think it's not going to bond properly. If you heat the metal of the port and solder flows then the solder will flow to the heat giving a better bond.

    That's why all this unleaded solder is BS.
    All military grade PCB are soldered with leaded solder. It is more elastic and doesn't crack easily.
    Also I admire Sorin's pragmatism and practicality. All those who desolder, then mix low melt solder, wicking and soldering again - that is absolutely not practical and done just for aesthetics.

      laptop brand? Sorin has a couple videos of HP boards that always have the same issue with the ram slot (a couple of the outer pins get desoldered)
      but before working on the board make sure to check with a different ram stick in that slot to be 100% sure that the slot is faulty

    One should always make sure the solder flows through the grounding pins/legs to the other side of the board to ensure that the port is securely soldered in on both sides of the board.

    Why so Sorin??
    Dodgy job. You take the faulty port out. You clean out the fixing holes from solder. Then clean with flux and copper braid. Then apply solder paste with flux. Run the iron on all connectors, and then put the connector on. Easy peezy...
