      @Luke I was faced with exactly the same dilemma as you are.
      Although I already have a traditional tele that’s had a lot of modifications, one them being bare knuckle “the boss” pickups. So I went for the deluxe. But here’s something..when delivered I wasn’t happy about fenders QC.
      Strings were poor, action was ridiculously high and pickup height needed tweaking. I was so underwhelmed. Off it went to the tech I use for fixing, he agreed with my thoughts.
      Two day later I got it back and it’s now my go to guitar. I love the pickups on this and the treble bleed.
      I would demo both traditional and deluxe at your guitar shop before you make any decision.
      Got mines from Bax in their January sale.....£1300 delivered although they’ve now returned to normal price.
      The split to single is pretty good without too much volume drop, very snappy with spank.
      Good luck 😉

      @@scottmckay67 I have the same guitar and love it. Just wanted to politely point out that I don't think that's a QC issue. Most guitars don't get shipped perfectly playable for every guitarist straight from the factory. I don't think I've ever bought a guitar and expected to not set it up to my preference.

    • @scottmckay67
      @scottmckay67 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@metalungus yeah I get what saying nick, but this really was unplayable, so much so that I was really underwhelmed with it.
      The neck need adjustment and frets weren’t level, pickup height
      needed raised. Action was ridiculously high.
      I ordered mine online so never had a chance for a test drive prior to receiving.
      For a guitar that costs as much as it does I think the quality control could have been tighter.

    • @AmbientEndeavors
      @AmbientEndeavors  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question! I always feel like you sacrifice a little on the single coil sound of split coils, but these sound pretty good. There's some nice pop and twang from the bridge. I'd say you get 80-90% of the way there, but it just won't rival like a well-designed Tele single coil.

      @@AmbientEndeavors Thans for the answer! What I am looking is a nice round and full in lows and mids single coil neck sound that sounds full and doesn't have a lot of annoying high frequences in around 2,5-5k. Do you think the deluxe would be the right choice for me?

    • @AmbientEndeavors
      @AmbientEndeavors  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks for watching! So, if you're a humbucker player, the WRHBs are going to be clearer. These humbuckers sound really good, and you get the added benefit of single coil sounds in the split coil positions, which obviously get you more clarity...but comparing just on humbucker tones a good WRHB would be innately more clear. Caveat : I would pick these VMod II over the MIM Fender WRHBs, which I find to be a little muddy. I have heard GREAT things about Fender's new CuNiFe WRHBs and need to try those for comparison.

    That bit at 7:47 is gorgeous. I realize this is probably a newb question, but what happens if you swap these humbuckers out for normal ones that aren't designed to be split and then hit the push button on the knob? Is it like crossing the streams in ghostbusters or what? I think I'm basically sold on this guitar, but I want to know if I can easily upgrade the pickups later if I decide they're not for me.

      @AmbientEndeavors  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey! It's a great question. I haven't opened it up, but if you have a clever guitar tech and choose pickups with individual coil wires, you could essentially wire the coil splitting back in. Otherwise, the switching portion of the pot wouldn't do anything; you could just wire them up to the pots.

    • @buschovski1
      @buschovski1 ปีที่แล้ว

      when he switches tones 8:04 its even more beautiful. A little chime is added. Infact if I were to record this piece. Id use all these tones for it. recorded on like ten tracks or so swirling in and out of each other.

    Question: do the split humbuckers on this model sound like true single coil pickups?

    • @AmbientEndeavors
      @AmbientEndeavors  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The short answer is: yes. Check the demo section for reference, I go through all the positions in 3 different contexts. Now, are they gonna sound like your favorite boutique wound $150 single coil? Probably not, but it is a true single coil tone, and it's convincing.

    Anyone have an explanation for the volume and tone knob indicator dots being at like the 2 o’clock. Example, when the volume knob is at 0% or volume off, the knob aligns with the dot indicating level 10 or 100%. This is the same for all four knobs.

I had similar feelings after spending some time with this guitar; it has some really strong "pros" and also feels like it was designed with a little too much breadth/versatility in mind. For me, I gravitate toward a little more focused of a sound or guitar, so I reach for my Tele with Lollartrons more often. I will say, it feels and plays superbly, and many have circled back after picking one up and said how they're happy with it. I guess it's good we have so many options to choose from :D

    You really should try one of the new Fender American Original 70s with the real WRBH pickups that utilize the CuNiFe pole magnets.
    There is a really big difference in the sound and feel of the CuNiFe based WRHB pickups.
    Fender has made is somewhat difficult in that they have 3 versions of the WRHB pickups with only one of them being the real-deal (of course the WRHB CuNiFe pickups are only available on the more expensive Telecaster.
    Not sure if you have done much research about the history surrounding the Fender WRHB Pickups, but it is truly amazing.
    Seth Lover invented the original Gibson PAF Humbucker, then left Gibson to go on to work for Fender developing the WRHB!
    Years later Gibson hired Tim Shaw to design a more vintage sounding pickup. Mr. Shaw left Gibson and went on to work for Fender where he revived the WRHB pickup using real CuNiFe magnets. Amazing, fact stranger (and more interesting) than fiction.
    Nice Demo, Thank You.

    • @AmbientEndeavors
      @AmbientEndeavors  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      ITS ALL A CONSPIRACY.
      But seriously, you get to make the call. I give a genuine review, and the only critiques I have on this guitar are highly subjective and preferential. Listen to the sounds, go find one in a shop and play it if you can, and decide whether it’s for you or not. I’ve fielded many folks questions about guitars I review and in some cases recommend others options or dissuade folks based on taste or objectives. I happen to like most of what fender puts out, and can guarantee they are big boys that can handle critique when it’s warranted, but I’m not just gonna make up flaws or cons if I don’t find them.
